University of Texas Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
don't lose hope yet guys, I know at least a handful of people who will be declining their offers (myself included) for texas tech...so that means more slots for you guys ;😀
I didn't have stellar stats either and my interview didn't go that well (in my opinion).
cGPA: 3.17
sGPA: ~3.2
PCAT: 80
3 strong LORs (2 pharmacists, 1 professor) & awesome essays
1.5 yrs experience (with 1 of those years as lead tech) at a retail pharmacy
graduated in 2006 with BS in biology. Hopefully my open seat will help one of ya'll 🙂

There aren't any schools in Texas that can beat UT's numbers, either, which is nice. My suggestion is to physically write out the pro's and con's of each school. It may seem silly, but I think it'll help a lot.

I am torn between Tech @ Amarillo and UT... ahhhhhh....

The people and the technology at Texas Tech made a last impression at my interview. I have been trying to get in touch with current Tech students for their opinions, but I haven't heard back from anyone... Seems like the whole world around me is telling me to go with UT.

I spoke with someone today from the admissions committee. She told me that during the meeting last wednesday, they didn't get through many of the applicants. They start out with the 4.0 GPAs with high PCATS and/or awesome interviews and kind of work their way down so there won't be many letters sent out today or tomorrow 🙁

The next meeting is next wednesday and if they still don't get through all of the applications then, they'll hold another meeting hopefully the same week.
thats where I gathered that they still have alot of seats to fill, and it makes sense to me b/c they changed up their admission process this year so naturally there are gonna be some kinks to work out (hence the delays in notifying weve seen so far) hang in there

I don't mean to sound rude, but how did you find out they didn't get many done last week?
^

Typical SDN member... 3.5+ GPA, 90+ PCAT, experience, and yet "OMG guys I'm not sure I'll get an interview! Please reassure me!" It's good to be humble and all, but seriously?
I think that its best to respect the competitive nature of the application process and to realize that there are no "gimme's", especially with a school that is more competitive like UT is. The point of that post was to basically say "I felt exactly like you or anyone else, worried about it; that we are in all the same place with this, and to stay optimistic; there are many more seats to fill and it doesn't matter who hears what when.

Same here!! Except I'm on the rocks between UH and UT... it seems like UT is calling to me but I'm from Houston and moving to Austin would be more inconvenient. I'm having so much trouble deciding because everyone is telling me to just stay home (Houston). 😕

same. I was blown away by the Anchutz Medical Campus up at UCDenver, and their brand new pharmacy building etc... I understand that Tech is cheaper that UT is that right? If UCDenver was cheaper than UT pick it immediately no hesitation. If you're more impressed with TTech, and its cheaper I would certainly lean that way. I wasn't so impressed with UT but it is convenient and practical for me; definitely consider that aspect too. You have plenty of time. I'm not going to stress about it and rush a decision, I'm just going to hangout and let the decision "come to me" haha... but I think thats the best way 🙂 Good luck with "The Decision"

anybody know if there will be decisions given out today or where they all given out in yesterday's batch?

I created a facebook group. It is titled:

UTexas-COP Class of 2015

I tried to make it just click and you can add yourself into it. So go ahead and add yourself!

I have minimal experience - that's why I was so surprised any response from them.
but that shows you can get in without being strong in everything

Hi Aayame,

Would you mind telling how much experience you have?? I'm just wondering because we have very similar PCAT and GPA.

i really hope so...im in the same boat! accepted to the other two schools i applied to but i was really hoping to hear back from UT this week since its my #1

Hi brittboo,

Which schools did you get into (out of curiosity)??

I got into Tech and A&M, but Tech's climate is a lot less than ideal and it's far from my hometown of Corpus Christi. So I guess I'm driving to Kingsville tomorrow and giving them 500 big ones lol.

Hopefully, we get in the 2nd round (I'll even be willing to lose 500 dollars for it [not really but I really really want to go to UTpharm])

I volunteered two weeks in a pharmacy before my LOR - which were done by a pharmacist and the volunteer coordinator. That being said. My father is a pharmacist, so it was at his old pharmacy and then I took the PTCB test feb and am currently registering with the state board and I wen to my dad's current hospital and shadowed pharmacists at 5 different pharmacies there- (but only for two work days over two weeks) So compared to everyone else- that's not much.

Yeah, I only have a month of experience at a clinical pharmacy and i don't know how good 2 of my LoR's were. My third one was from the doctor who owned the clinic and I know it was good haha.

I see that some people are declining their UT spots. More spots for us who didn't get in!!! 😀😀:luck::luck:

And congrats to everybody who got accepted!!!

i sent in four. there was an extra button to add additional.

ok this is really making me uneasy now....I am looking at the website and its only allowing me 2 entries... I was torn between choosing 2 of my 4 LORs and now Im finding out I could've placed a better app by submitting all four?

and you're positive this is UT? I am seriously stressin out 😡

So, are you holding the spots at both schools until you make "The Decision"? I haven't actually compared the tuition of the schools yet... But I think they are about the same. UT may be a little less expensive, but the cost of living in Austin is higher than that in Amarillo...

Not sure if you know that Tech has this super-awesome simulation center with mannequins hooked up to hospital monitors. If the tuition is about the same, wouldn't you want to go to the school with leading edge technology? I need to talk to current Tech Rx students to find out if what I saw on the interview day matches the reality. I haven't had any luck getting responses with my "cold call" e-mail messages though... 🙁

I would much rather live in Austin than Amarillo, but Texas Tech really impressed me that day. Is ranking really that important? For a school as new as Texas Tech, I think they have made a lot of progress and built a pretty good reputation.

So, what does UC Denver have in their new building? Just curious... 😉

Congrats to the other students that have gotten their acceptances--for those who are still waiting, don't give up hope yet.

As one of those who was lucky enough to get the e-mail, are there any other non-tradutional students starting with me in the Fall?

Don't stress out!! I only submitted two letters and didn't submit anything more than what they "allowed".

I am non-traditional. I have a business degree. 👍

thanks, but I'm worried because my GPA (2.97) and PCAT (79%) is not as competitive compared to others and my other 2 LORs REALLY could've helped make up the slack. if EVERYONE submitted 2 LORs then I guess I can't do anything about it but the fact that someone was ABLE to send in 4 kind of puts me on edge.

sorry just stressin out with this admissions thing and my two exams this week...plus work HAHAHA

I have no idea if they even used them to evaluate me. All I know is that I had four letters, so I sent them to UT.

infact now that i think about it, maybe it was a different school? I just checked the UT website and it says 2 pretty clearly. either way dont stress too much dude.

I get that it's real competitive and nobody is guaranteed a spot, but to me it just comes across as a slap in the face when someone with pretty flawless stats tries to act like they know the same struggle as someone who has a less competitive GPA or didn't do as well on the PCAT as they thought. This is a bit of an extreme analogy, but it's kind of like if someone living in LA said "I know what you mean" to someone in Japan right now.

I think Tech and UT have similar tuition rates, but the cost of living in Amarillo is cheaper than it is in Austin.

Cost is really important in my decision because I'm going to have to take out loans for everything. When you factor in interest, even taking out $100,000 is gonna mean at least $1,000 per month to pay back (assuming you try to do it in 10 years). I actually really like OU's campus, and if the cost to attend there were the same as UT, I'd have a harder time deciding between the two if I get into UT, too.

iwant2bepharmd... I was accepted to UH and A&M but I gave up my spot at A&M.

txs171... I emailed Dr. Wilcox and asked if I could send in one additional LOR and he told me that was fine and that he would make a note in my file to look for the extra LOR when reviewing my application.

also, I have a 3.5+ gpa/decent pcat/lots of experience and I haven't been admitted to UT so I don't think someone with these stats is automatically in...the process is extremely competitive!

I sent my extra in with a pkg I sent to Wilcox himself I didn't see any extra button...

Yeah there wasn't a button but once you sent the first two using the online system you could log-in again and send in another one or two using the same form.

Yea definitely going to hold both seats for a while.
I don't know much about TTech but I've heard good things. Few good friends headed there in the fall.
I place absolutely zero worth in the
rankings.
Dunno about UCDenvers new building but it's on the website def check out the campus they have a video tour somewhere on the site I know.

Has anybody been accepted out of state? I'm curious to see if the PSAR 99%instate statistic holds true.

I think y'all should take it easy. Gotta look at the intentions. I believe he was genuine when he said he felt as insecure as all of us throughout the application process. I am actually impressed someone with stats like wmw is so humble. 👍

Thanks for real. I understand ppl getting antsy given the situation at hand, but I really just wanna help ppl out whether they're my competition or not, it's all the same to me. The only reason I got on SDN in the first place was to help ppl prepare for the PCAT once I received my scores, been tutoring prepharm folks every week since then.

when i asked for wmw for UT application advice he said that they like pharmacy experience the most and the PCAT the least (things I have in my app). so far i was offered an interview which came as a shock, and wmw has been helpful so far. now if i get accepted then ill know if wmw's statement holds true (unless if wilcox said i bombed the interview).

this forum needs a few laughs to get through the waiting game, if anybody likes voiceovers and power rangers together check this out:laugh:

Non-trad right here. Graduated from college back in 2006

This is sort of a support group if I might call it that LauraDiddle. I don't know you personally but from you're posts you seem like you are always on standby to criticize someone else's post. Let's learn to respect other people's feelings and thought even thought they don't mirror your own

Now on to other stuff. Congratulations to those who have been accepted. And good luck to everyone else is anxiously awaiting some good news.

I bet you'll get in the second round of offers. I think they have a lot more applications to review and as another poster stated, some are going to deny and that opens up spots for us.

if it makes you feel any better, you have a way better shot than me in getting in.

well thank you... i hope we all hear some good news soon! are you planning on holding your seat at a&m? i was really impressed by their program and interview process but kingsville was not an ideal location for me. i work at the pharmacy at texas a&m-college station and we have had several 4th year pharmacy interns from kingsville and they are awesome!

just emailed dr wilcox, looks like he allowed certain ppl to submit more LORs but the standard is two. he also said my app is going to be reviewed march 23, at least i know im not rejected....yet

You obviously don't read most of my posts, since many of them have offered support to other people on here or are just silly jokes. That said, since when is a little criticism a bad thing? Just because I gave an opinion about someone else's comment and that opinion didn't sugar-coat what I thought... somehow that means I have no respect for their feelings? I didn't call them names or say that they were wrong, I was just letting another member know how their opinion made me feel. I'm not sure how that means I'm disrespectful. I mean... hopefully we'll all get in and are future classmates someday. That last thing I would want to do is start some drama on a forum before the school year even starts.

Your numbers are about the same as mine (your pre-pharm gpa is better than mine, and you have a degree.) I got in, so don't sell yourself short. You have a really good chance! Think positive.

seconded. There are lots of thread crappers on this forum but lauradiddle isn't one of them.

Just chill out! You are entitled to your feelings. But you just give the impression that you are a little over-sensitive. :eyebrow:
No need to get mad over something so petty. The point is he wasn't even trying to show off/make you mad... Anyway, I would like to think that I would be going to class with mature individuals. Please keep it that way.

I asked Dr. Wilcox if I could send more than one LOR and he said only understand certain circumstances. He asked me why I needed to send in more than 2 and that they say to only submit 2 of your BEST recommendations who will BEST represent you. I didn't have a great reason so I just send 2.

Wow. This kind of reaction to a conversation that doesn't directly involve you seems to imply I'm not the over-sensitive one on here. Just saying...

Yeah, he told me the same thing. I had one low subsection on my first PCAT so he let me send in an additional letter. I doubt it makes much of a difference as long as the two you send in speak highly of you.

Yeah. I'm driving there tmrw morning to turn in my paperwork (I'm in Corpus right now so it's like a 50 min. drive). I was honestly impressed with all the schools I applied to. Texas should be proud of the pharmacy schools they have to offer. Tech actually impressed me the most and I'm a little sad I'm declining, but Amarillo is just not a place I want to be. Since I'm from Corpus, Kingsville is a great location for me.

Somewhat unserious question, if you get into UT, will you be an Aggie or a Longhorn??

Thanks a lot!!

And congrats on getting in!!!

I think my biggest weakness is my lack of work/volunteer hours in a pharmacy. But I don't think I'll lose hope until they send me that rejection haha.

Haha I guess both?? I love a&m but I guess I can love UT too

For those of you who are still waiting to hear back on a decision, you'll be happy to know that I will be declining my acceptance. Another spot opened for you guys!
