University of Texas Application Thread

wmw just curious what made you dislike dentistry and medicine?

I turned to pharmacy partly bc my dad is an independent pharmacist and i got influenced by him. my dad then recommended to work as a pharm tech just to be safe and thats how the rest of my pharm career started

few reasons:
stress level had alot to do with my career choice; I have uncles who are ER docs, neurosurgeons, and pharmacists, and after working with them pharmacy felt the most enjoyable to me. Also I want to be a family man, pharmacy seems much more conducive to that as well. Also med/dent schools require residency and are far more competitive during the first 4 years, and im verryy done with all this competitive bs of 'getting in' and playing to what adcoms are looking for, being judged etc. etc... ready for all that to be over for sure. also the opportunity to own my own business appeals to me, as well as the not being on call part. Finally, i'd rather learn about drugs and their mechanisms as opposed to pathology and pathophysiology if given the choice.... Im more of a chem guy, less bio

Thanks for the reply. Have you been accepted anywhere yet?

My interviews went pretty well, aside from the usual nervousness/anxiety that goes along with them. I usually had some concrete example to bring up in each interview question; and I had been doing some mock interviews around the time of my pharmacy interviews. For UT's interview, there was only one question that I decided not to answer because I didn't believe I had an adequate response for it. Besides that, I would say my responses were pretty strong for the rest of the questions.

The only downside would be that my first interview was with UT; and it was pretty early. So I only had time to go up from there, as I interviewed at Tech and Kingsville. But I hope the adCOM takes that into account (that the second round of interview candidates would be stronger/ more prepared).

Hopefully I'm just being neurotic, and I'll hear good things after March 23rd. Good luck to everyone else as well! And Hook'em!

I was accepted to Tech, UT, and UH (every school I applied to.) I'm sure you have a good chance. If they had reviewed your application I think you would have been informed. I think Wilcox said they would let you know if you were accepted, declined, or tabled. There is still a lot of hope for any applicant that hasn't heard anything yet. I know waiting is really hard on the nerves, but hopefully you won't have too much longer. :xf:

Haha I hope we hear by friday!! But dr. Wilcox only told me that they were meeting the 23rd, not what day they would get the emails sent out...

If it works the same way that the first round did, I think you should hear by Monday the 28th. My acceptance letter was dated the 15th (the same day I got my email) and they met on the 9th.

Has anyone who has emailed Ann to accept their offer received a reply yet?

Hello folks,

I emailed Dr. Wilcox yesterday (because according to UTDirect my pharm d. app got cancelled for some reason). But he said AdCom is meeting the 24th. I'm assuming they will email us the next day...

I got my reply from Ann just now.

But my status still hasn't changed! Is it 'cause I'm a UT student? -_- lol whatever.

My status hasn't changed either, and I am a UT student too. I haven't received an reply back yet.

I am under the impression that a lot of things that the office says is not reliable. Only reason that I say this is because of how many times they say one thing but it ends up another way. Of course they dont want us to know EVERYTHING they are doing. They will prolly meet at a random time on a random date sometime this week and send out emails again at a random time.

Oh yeah...did you guys know they are already denying people who had interviews?! I just heard from a friend who interviewed. She got her rejection letter last week! So scared now!

Good catch there! I wasn't aware that they've already started rejecting folks. Better go check my mailbox, lol.

I bet they sent out rejections for those whose applications were reviewed on the 9th, but weren't selected for admission or waitlist. If you are worried about it I would just email Dr. Wilcox...he emailed me back letting me know that my application will be reviewed on the 23rd. It will ease your mind at least a little i think

Just got the follow up email as well. It said she will also email when the packets go out

Just got my follow up email as well. I called her today and she said she is replying back to all the emails she has received in the order that she got them. 🙂

Oh wow I didn't know that. I'm glad we at least get feedback so we can make decisions either way. And I guess no news might still be good news! :xf:

But someone just posted that they emailed Wilcox and he told them their app will be reviewed on the 24th. However, people also got responses from the same office stating that the ad comm will meet on the 23rd. Everyone was also previously told that the adcomm will send out the first set of letters on Friday then it turned into Tuesday. However, people got their emails on that Monday. LOL, I guess im trying not to worry myself but all these different dates are running me crazy!!!

from what i've seen there have been around 10 or so out of state acceptance so far; more that I would have expected. So thats good news for the rest of yall OOS ppl who havent heard yet

we pay more tuition so that may help UT pharmacy school with the extra money, though i doubt it would really help any OOS applicant out there. university of california is doing that now since they're pretty much bankrupt but i guess you cant compete with texas oil haha

Out-of-state students pay extra because the state isn't subsidizing their education. UT doesn't have a financial incentive to accept out-of-state students.

haha yeah there are a lot of conflicting dates...but i think its safe to say they are meeting sometime this week and will send out emails either at the end of this week or beginning of next week...who knows though

i've emailed dr wilcox and he personally told me the 23rd but he could've changed his schedule. I am from California and its good to hear that more OOS ppl have been accepted. does this mean i have a good chance of getting in or worse??? please give me some feedback ppl! haha

txs171 im from california too. just curious what made you apply to UT?

its hard to tell if being OOS is positive or negative. ive emailed dr wilcox before and he said it does not matter and that its just that not a lot of OOS students apply (i think 41 last year). if you got the interview they probably knew you were OOS so you must have done something in your app to stand out. wish the best of luck to ya

my gpa is 2.97 and PCAT is 79%. the fact that California does NOT accept PCATs seriously made me consider out of state since my app isn't very competitive without my PCAT. I think the fact that I've interned in a PTSD psyc clinic, biochem research lab, and worked as a pharm tech helped my app a bit. Plus my leadership roles in various extracurriculars and also the fact I went to high school in Japan (family is in the military) probably helped as well.

despite all that, I thought most pharmacy schools looked for grades and numbers so I just applied to UT to see what happened (I was also born in Austin so that got me a little bit interested). I'm a bit disappointed in myself because I just wrote all my essays without editing/revising because I didn't think I would have a chance of being accepted. Now I'm regretting it since I know I could've polished my application better.

where you from btw? and why did you apply?

nice to hear from a fellow socal person, is it raining like crazy in san diego? it was in los angeles for the past day

im from west los angeles CA (well i went to university in LA, but im originally from san jose northern CA)

while watching the 2005 rose bowl i actually met a couple of UT pharmacy alums that were working in orange county, CA (which is where i hope to work). they convinced me to consider their school their vast curriculum and awesome alumni connections and that is where i am now

plus my pharmacy manager i worked with was an UT alum so there was more additional info i learned about UT pharm school

regarding stats, im sort of in the same boat as you except that i have a high GPA and a low PCAT. i dont know what got me into the interview but i took dr wilcox and wmw's advice on the volunteer/pharmacy experience and the pharmacist LOR and im guessing that paid off. whether i impressed them on interview remains to be seen.

Yeah, Dr. Wilcox told me the 24th, but he could have meant the 23rd and it was just a typo. Either way, I think we won't find out until next week if we get in either way.

Better watch out...karma just may work against you now for bashing VY 🙂

its ok! Reggie got his Heisman taken away and he lost kim khardasian, i think thats a fair balance with VY's "lack of a team" lol

haha last year Texas felt so bad about USC not going to a bowl game that they decided to not go to a bowl game themselves.

but i do hope you guys are good in 2016-2017, cuz thats when 05 rematch happens again

ill agree the UT pharmacy school is better than the USC pharmacy school if any longhorn fans are here to bash

on a side note dont know how many ppl follow march madness but i think its a good distraction from the stress of waiting - unless your bracket is completely wrecked

yea that arizona game was whack! but texas did have some issues and i didn't have them geting past duke anyway. butler and VCU destroyed my bracket but in any case i have Ohio st, kansas, SDSU, and BYU in the final four. being from san diego i have to root for my hometown team haha.

Weird... I don't remember that being a horrendous loss at all. :horns: I do remember your d-bag QB having the audacity to say he thought USC was the better team afterward.

As a Packers fan though, I'd just like to take a moment and thank y'all for Clay Matthews! 🙂🙂

My bracket is completely screwed. I had Texas going all the way, but admittedly my bracket was titled "optimistic" haha. Since I have family that went to Wisconsin and Marquette, I'm rooting for them now.

Hello!! Was starting to look into apartments and a UT alum I know mentioned that most of the pharm students live in Far West on the UT shuttle route. Does this sound right?

Has anyone set up an preferred apartment or roommate listing for Class 2015 yet? wmw?

If this has been mentioned in a previous post, please reply with post quote or page number.

Thanks!! 🙂

It wouldn't surprise me if a good number of pharm students live in that area. The rent is pretty reasonable, it's relatively safe, the residents are more mature (a lot of grad students), and the Far West shuttle drops you off right by the pharmacy school on campus. If I get in, it's one of the places I would consider.

I would definitely consider Far West too. I lived there for 2 years as an undergraduate at UT. Just avoid heading home/to campus around 3-6...traffic on Mopac can be a pain!

True. Whenever I had classes get out around that time, I just saw it as my incentive to study on campus until rush hour died down.

For those who aren't from Austin... that's part of the reason housing so close to campus is expensive though. Not having to deal with a commute on either I-35 or Mopac is a huge bonus.

its just the fact that USC lost and was single handedly dismantled by VY...could've had a championship

adcom meeting right now, just seen it

Ugggghhh 😱 I am already feelinggg lfhsdgfashfaowier8394782skdjskjdhfkh..I dont even know what I am typing haha

oh goodness. i can feel the stress building up...

I wonder if they go in any particular order of applications. As in, start with first interviewees and move chronologically, or move alphabetically, etc. Anyone know?

there is some speculation based on some good evidence; check previous posts.

during the last portion, and before the video Dr. Wilcox gave a short talk, an applicant asked how we would be evaluated and he mentioned a 'z-score' he calculates for each applicant from their pcat, gpa, quantified volunteer and experience, and research (no idea how he quantifies it, but hopefully not by hours) and the score determines the order in which applicants are reviewed to ensure fairness (i.e. so that qualified applicants don't get reviewed once all seats are full) just wondering how I might calculate my 'z-score' haha....

Quoted for posterity. Thanks! 👍

thanks for the updates. with your profile pic you sort of look like the 007 agents except your espionage is against the UT building and not some factory in siberia haha

sort are we reviewed by z-score or by last name? my last name is in the middle of the alphabets so if they already accepted some people's last name as B's, W's, Z's then we can throw that theory out the window

From my understanding, they review apps based on the z-score with the highest score going first.

Who knows, maybe we may get lucky and hear something tomorrow.

Correct. I've personally sat down and talked with Dr. Wilcox on this one. He takes our entire application, interview and all, and calculates a z-score for each of us. The order of the z-score does not exactly indicate who gets accepted but the order in which each applicant is reviewed by the admissions committee when they meet for acceptance.

I wonder if they are meeting again tomorrow as well since some people said they were told their application would be reviewed the 24th. This would make sense if it's true that they didn't get through many applications the first round before spring break.
Either way, we'll all know eventually, and good luck to us all! :luck:
I'm feeling anxious, excited, impatient, and nervous all at the same time.
All we can do now as we wait is be optimistic and hope for the best!
