University of Texas Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey Everyone,

I'm sure a lot of you will get good news on Monday so good luck to you.

I've accepted UT's offer and now I need some help with finding a place to live in Austin.

Those of you that already live in Austin, please give me opinion about the apartments in Riverside, specifically the Heights on Oltorf. It looks like they have dorm type set-ups. I haven't heard the greatest things about the Riverside area. Any help will be appreciated.

I'm open to having a roommate, if any you who have been recently accepted are looking for a roommate please let me know.

Tomorrow is going to be a really good day for a lot of you!!

Riverside is pretty ghetto. If you can afford it, live in west campus or north campus. If you don't mind a ~15 minute bus ride, far west. You'll be making enough to pay back loans when you graduate anyways, so might as well pay a little more for more comfort/convenience living near campus. None of my friends lived in Riverside after that first year they all moved to Austin. It was cheap, and paid bills is enticing, but really, you shouldn't mind the cost of living anywhere else if you're in pharmacy school already.

lmaonadestand is right, think of this way would you be happy living in a place that may be un-student friendly for 9 months. the first month you wouldnt but as the months drag on you may be tired of the commute (i had this problem in los angeles, traffic capital of the world - trust me its bad).

i wish all the rejection letters were all received by saturday, so i can assume that my acceptance letter is on hold/delay

I agree with lmaonadestand as well. I have personally lived on Riverside, North Campus, and West Campus and can definitely say you get what you pay for.

Riverside is cheap and don't have to worry about finding enough roommates. However, this area is infested with crime and shootings have happened. Also, the commute can vary anywhere from (15 - 45 minutes) depending on the time of day and not including actually walking to the buildings where your classes are located. I did this my first year and have moved on without looking back.

North Campus is moderately expensive but very quiet and close to grocery stores and the highway. The bus ride is only 5-10 minutes but the buses are NOT consistent at all and can be too quiet at times (could be a pro or a con). I found myself driving to campus most of the time. If you stay in this area, I recommend living in areas close to the IF buses as they are in areas closer to campus, do not encounter rush hour traffic, very consistent, and stop right in front of the pharmacy building.

West Campus is the most expensive of these three and where I am currently staying now. Walking distance to campus is only 5-10 minutes and usually the quality of the buildings are much more modern than what you can get in the other areas. Like I said before, it is much more expensive but the quality of life here surpasses the other by leaps and bounds. It is very comfortable and very conveinent. Only con is that it can get pretty crazy during the weekends. If you stay in this area, I would recommend getting a condo as opposed to an apartment because condos usually have parking spaces included in rent. An apartment would charge anywhere from $60-120 a month (yes I said a month) extra for parking.

Since we're in pharmacy school now, the added cost of living shouldn't be much of an issue. On top of that with the rigor of the pharmacy school curriculum already as it is, it would be nice to have a comfortable place to come back to. Again, my recommendation is live as close to campus as possible within your means.

For the thousandth time... I highly advise against Riverside. Go back through old pages in this thread if you want to know specific reasons why. I've built up plenty after living there for three years, but I'm too lazy to retype it.

Some people received a rejection letter last week or so....I have kinda lost hope and wouldnt be suprised if I get one....

I can't wait until all of this is over and done with. The suspense hinders me from concentrating on homework.

are you sure its from the 2nd round applicants? since it's snail mail for rejection letters it could be from the 1st round people that was reviewed 2-3 weeks ago...=/ trying to be optimistic haha

No those were from 1st rounds....The seconds ones are probably not even out yet....I guess if you email Dr WilCox he would tell you your status....

nothing yet. I called earlier today and Mrs. Spencer confirmed that not all acceptances other than those from the waitlist have been sent out yet, and that they will be out "this week". I hope this means today though, since others reported that Dr. Wilcox said 'a couple of days' last Thursday, and we have speculated that that meant today, Monday. I really hope i find SOMETHING out today, it would suck if only SOME of the remaining emails were sent today and not THE REST.

Lol I walked in the admissions office and asked for my status and they told me to wait for email or mail :[

i would think they would tell you straight out if you were rejected...so that could be really good news for you 🙂

and at least you know that they are going to be sending out some more emails soon...

it sounds like not only today but they will slowly be out this week. Thats double tension now.... Now i have to not only check email but mail too for the denial or waitlisted letter 🙁

I walked in there naked with a bottle of bourbon and they definitely wouldn't tell me anything.

nope, they probably still wouldn't spill it, but you would be sure to leave an impression

maybe then UT would see how stressed out they have all of us!

Best of luck all, still checking email, nothing yet...

same here... i wish i had something to do today so i couldn't sit here and check my email every 2 seconds... but then again i get email on my phone so i would be doing it either way

I have plenty to do today, 1 test in genetics and another in french.

These might not be my best grades, they would however significantly improve if I could stop checking email!

They are not going to tell anything cuz if they do, then all those 60 or so left over people will begin to call and ask for their statuses...

I would start to check the mailbox too at this point

do you think that many spots are still open? that would be nice...

Make sure you guys are checking your online status as well. I found out that way two hours before I received an email.

i feel like even if some people get emails today its still up in the air because someone said they were slowly updating people throughout the week...i have been checking my application status as well just to make sure

i'm just wondering...has anyone personally emailed Dr. Wilcox to ask about their status?

So someone posted that several people already received denial letters. Has anyone here gotten one yet? This is making me nervous. I checked my mail Saturday night and didn't find one, but I might how up today....

someone should at least call before they close today. I already did this morning and don't want to again 😛

nope...id say if we havent heard anything by 5 were going to have to wait again tomorrow...

For my fellow people who havent heard..I say brace yourselves for bad news :scared:

Somehow I don't think they have sent out rejection letters yet. Nobody on here and nobody I know has heard of anyone getting one. If they are still in the process of reviewing all of the applicants, I would think to be fair they'd wait until they had reviewed them all at least before issuing rejections; ideally they would finish assembling the waitlist before sending out rejections

what is the bad news??

Thanks for the vote of confidence! 😛

I don't know about anyone else, but till I get a rejection letter, I am keeping my spirits high and my fingers crossed!

:xf:

Just called. They said no definite numbers, but they were still reviewing applications and would definitely have everything out, acceptance and wait list, by next week.

they are still reviewing applications? i thought they did that last week... ugh that just means more waiting!

This person said some people got rejection letters already. Good news if we haven't gotten one yet?

Yep. Thats what I heard that they did reject some people already. Its possible cuz thats just going to help them narrow down for acceptances and waitlisteds
