University of Texas Application Thread

Does anyone know when the first interview is? I've been given conflicted answers (last weekend of Jan; none till Feb, etc). Just wondering if anyone knew for sure. Thanks!

I wish I knew!

The first interview weekend is January 28th and 29th, the next is Febuary 11th and 12th, the last is Febuary 25th and 26th. An interviewer showed me an email Wilcox sent.

Hello all pre-pharmacy students!

I'm a P2 at UT, and I love my experience so far. Please email me if you have any questions about the application process or the curriculum - I'd be more than happy to share my thoughts (at least until school starts up again on the 18th). I know that this is an incredibly stressful process (having no idea where you'll be next year), but it'll all pay off in the end. UT has an amazing pharmacy school, and I wish you all the best of luck!

What is your least favorite thing about the curriculum? Please answer.
Also will there be any curriculum revisions in the near future?

Hi all,

Anyone received an interview invites from UT yet???

Interview invites will go out via email around the 21st of this month

Haha, I guess that should be my major concern. If I do get accepted, I don't know where my loyalties will lie.

I've already been accepted at OU, so if I don't get into UT (where I did my undergrad) it could be an awkward next four years... 😛

Hook 'em! \m/

Before I answer my LEAST favorite curriculum tidbit, I'd like to say some of the things I like about it. My class is the first class to have gone through the new curriculum - we're known as the guinea pigs (oh joy!). The staff worked extremely hard to take student feedback into consideration when changing the curriculum. The P1 year was made slightly easier, while the P2-P3 years were made significantly harder. Class orders were changed around to fit into a better sequence - for example, Patient Assessment is now taken fall semester of P2 year instead of fall semester of P3 year. This course goes hand-in-hand with the Pharmacotherapeutics module on cardiac arrhythmias. These courses are now taken at the same time, and concepts are reinforced in both classes. Kinetics used to be taken P1 year, and has now been moved to spring semester of P2 year. Students used to be required to take summer school classes during the summer between P2 and P3 years, which is no longer necessary. The list goes on and on... If you want more details, let me know.

As for the bad stuff...classes are tough and you have A LOT of them! I have taken 9-11 classes each semester (16-19 hours). Last semester we were required to take a whopping 19 hours (and some took 20, eek!). With such a heavy courseload, its quite difficult to work part-time or to have much of a life during the school year. It is also a bit harder to be extremely active in the college (clubs and such), but many students have figured out how to manage their time wisely. However, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Despite the workload, the classes are interesting, fun, and you can definitely do well if you work hard. My pharmacy GPA is over 3.7 and I certainly don't consider myself a genius.

Overall, its a very tough program, but the faculty, the staff, and your peers are all there to help you out. I highly recommend coming to UTCOP if you have been accepted - I don't regret my decision to come here one bit!

As far as future curriculum decisions, I am uncertain what's to come. We constantly have to fill out surveys because the college is extremely interested in our feedback. I'm sure revisions to the curriculum will take place once the college has analyzed how the "guinea pigs" have done, but I have no idea when revisions will take place or what the changes will be.

So does the pharmacy school only look at the phamD application then defer u to the undergraduate admissions if they reject you or do they look at the apply Texas app as well?

The pharmacy school does not look at you ApplyTexas application. You are first accepted to UT, then the college of pharmacy reviews your Pharmacy application

Is this your first year applying? Reading your posts, you seem pretty knowledgeable.

It is. I just do my homework. It helps if you know ppl over there.

How is everyone preparing for the interview?

I think I have a good idea of how to prepare, but just curious. 🙂

I have noticed that several of you have stated that you have no pharmacy experience. Whether a pharmacy school accepts you or not, I highly recommend getting some form of pharmacy experience before you apply. Pharmacy school is very challenging and quite expensive - it would suck to start a program and then realize that pharmacy is not right for you.

SDN interview feedback, scheduled a mock interview with a health professions advisor, and going to look over my essays and application.

How are you going to prepare?

Totally agree. Most of the pharmacists I have talked to who "hate" their jobs never worked in a pharmacy prior to enrolling in a program. Know what you are getting yourself into. Pharmacy is definitely not for everyone.

Thank you orgosynthesizer.

No problem.

This forum seems almost dead compared to last year's and the year I applied. SDN is an excellent source for information from those applying as well as those already in the program. I urge you to ask any questions that you may have. I will be one of the student interviewers for the first round of interviews on Saturday, and I look forward to meeting several of you.

The invites for the first interview are out already?😕

I don't think so. My friend told me the first round of interviews is Jan 28th so I'm guessing invites will go out this week.

Good luck, yall. I've been refreshing my email like crazy as I'd imagine yall have. 🙂

I'm definitely not ready if the first interviews start next week!
On the other hand, if these three interview times actually mean something (first-round second-round type situation) I'd be pumped!

I'm also nervous as well,
Good luck everyone!

I don't think UT does an essay or group interview. I believe it is just interview only. I may be wrong but all my friends that interviewed the past years have told me this information.

They don't. UT doesn't have rolling admissions, and your interview time doesn't have anything to do with your application as far I have heard.

Y'all are seriously tweaking out....

What does the interview process include? Essay and group presentation?

UT's interview process is extremely chill. You go into a waiting room and talk to other interviewees and some upperclassmen about their experiences. When it is time for you to interview, you're taken to a private room where two interviewers will be waiting for you. One interviewer is a practicing pharmacist or a faculty member. The other interviewer is a P2, P3 or P4 pharmacy student. The interview is partly "blind" - the interviewers have not seen your grades, PCAT scores, or extended resume - just your essays. Be prepared to talk about things that you mentioned in your essays - accomplishments, work experience, extracurriculars, etc. Also, be prepared to answer several difficult ethical questions relating to pharmacy. The interview lasts 20-30 minutes. The interviewers are very polite, and they make the interview seem more like a friendly conversation than a grilling session. After the interview, you're given a tour of the pharmacy building and you watch a video about UT in general. Finally, Dr. Wilcox speaks to you about the pharmacy school, and you are given an opportunity to ask questions to a panel of pharmacy students. The whole thing takes less than 2 hours. Dress to impress, be polite but talkative, and smile!

Random question, but what is the weirdest thing you have seen someone wear to an interview? When my boyfriend interviewed at Kingsville, someone was wearing a silver (as in shiny) suit and yellow converse... I'm sure they remembered him afterward, haha! I've heard all kinds of stories, just wondering what strange things you have personally seen or heard interviewees do.

Sure, I am nervous..but the spring semester began this week and got distracted from applications...is this good or bad? 🙄
I have checked my email almost every hour today...nothing!
I wish you guys all here including me get accepted! Good luck!

BTW, doesn't it matter whether I submit winter semester transcript now or not? I just wonder since other school told me to update winter semester after they heard I took...

I haven't seen anything too weird at the sessions I went to - most people look very sharp. I have, however, seen some ladies who showed far too much skin. If you have questions about what is appropriate or not, I'd be glad to answer. Make sure your clothes are ironed, stain-free and lint is removed. Ladies, do NOT wear short skirts/dresses (no more than 1 inch above knee), sleeveless shirts/dresses (that includes exposed shoulders) or low-cut shirts/dresses.

There are several ethical questions? As in not only 1 or 2?
Does UT ever reuse questions? Thing is, I've been reading a LOT of current event articles on medicine and health care...But I really want to know a better way to prepare for the ethical questions. I'm worried they'll throw a lot at me that I've never even heard of! But I know that I'd be great for UT pharm school regardless of not knowing enough about some of the ethical questions they throw my way. What should I do?

They generally ask you 2-3 ethical questions, and they often reuse questions (since I will be an interviewer, I won't give you specific examples). They are thought-provoking but not terrible if you have pharmacy experience. They will be very challenging if you have none.

Since interview invitations go out roughly a week before the first round of interviews, would it be sent out tomorrow? I am getting so nervous!

This is probably a stupid question, but are all of the ethical questions directly related to pharmacy?

congrats. you guys both in-state applicants? my transcripts took a while to get updated so it might be a while for me.

Thanks! I'm a Texas resident but am attending an out-of-state school. My Fall 2010 transcript got mailed to UT at the end of December.
