I encourage more of y'all to go over to pharmapplicants.com and fill out profiles for UT. There's only three so far! It can be pretty helpful if a good number of people use it!

Also, do you think that your responses can ever be TOO in depth? For example, there is so much that has contributed into me finding out that pharmacy is the most suitable career for me. A lot has happened to me that developed my passion for it, whether experience in an actual pharmacy setting and my research UT, back to all the leadership positions I had in high school making me know I wanted to do something interactive. If I told you know, a kind of story about the process of knowing pharmacy was right for me, would that be bad?
 
SuperBean: I highly doubt it. They want to hear about you and see how passionate you are about the field. Being genuine is the key. If it sounds like you are rambling on just because then that might be a probably but I'm sure that's not the case. If they ask you why you chose pharmacy then spill your heart out to them.

Aww but some of my favorite memories are those shameful times on good ol' dirty 6th! It's definitely got its fair share of sketchy and douchey parts though. Plus any time a friend comes in town we "have to go to 6th" so it gets kind of old for me. With so many great things to try in Austin, it's definitely a waste if someone just went downtown every weekend.
 
West 6th and 5th street are much better than just dirty 6th.

Austin is a good place to go see live music, especially country music. Also the greenbelt is a great place to hangout, lots of fishing, swimming, disc golf courses, running trails, and rock climbing. Also alot of good art galleries around, especially the smaller ones. Good food too, several great steakhouses and sushi spots close to UT campus.

4th is different; I will go down to Peche on occasion... and I did go over to Little Woodrow's tonight actually, but its west 6th :laugh:
 
haha based on what guys are talking about 6th street sort of sounds like Frat Row at USC.


anybody have any recommendations of good & cheap hotels/motels to room at?
 
Theres a hampton on Guadalupe south of campus. It's on a busroute that drops you off a few blocks from the pharm school

Nah... that's west campus.

Dirty 6th does have plenty of bros though. I don't think it's as bad as others say, and I think it's worth checking out. If you've never seen a flaming Dr. Pepper, you should go to Cheers. Pete's Dueling Piano bar gets expensive, but is a lot of fun. I like the atmosphere at Maggie Mae's and the large glasses of beer at Logans. That said, because we take pride in the "Keep Austin Weird" thing, Austin has so many cool things to check out that you don't want to get stuck in the habit of going to a favorite place too often. If you're in town long enough to catch a movie, you should see it at Alamo Drafthouse (serves food and alcohol). If you like real beer, I recommend Ginger Man, Draught House, or Flying Saucer. And while I'm sticking to the alcoholic theme... there's no place like Spec's. Best liquor store ever. They also have great cheese.

Haha I call it trashy 6th. I didn't realize Cheers makes the the flaming Dr. Pepper. I've had more than my fair share at Touche. Cheers does make a very good blue wave shot though but not all bartenders know how to make it. So if you're lucky, you'll be able to find one who does. 😉

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the abundance of amazing food trucks around town. God they're incredible. Love the hike and bike trail, SXSW, Austin City Limits, Mayfield Park, wineries that are only a short drive away from Austin, the mecca of grocery stores - the flagship Whole Foods store, laid back atmosphere, and whole weird vibrant vibe of the city.

The downside about Austin is the traffic. For a city of its size, the traffic is horrendous. One of the comedians I went to see during my undergrad years at UT quipped "Why is Mopac called Mopac? Because it's more packed than any other freeway in Texas!"

I saw my first one at Touche, and they do a good job, but I think they're better at Cheers. They stack 'em up more and make a bigger flame. I think Cheers actually burned down once because of it, which is why the whole upstairs now is concrete. I have yet to actually witness a blue wave, but I'll keep Cheers in mind for that. :laugh:

Yes the wineries! I'm in dire need of a camping trip/wine tasting out in the hill country. Also some river tubing, but that'll have to wait a few months.

Austin traffic is horrendous. You know it's bad when I-35 is wider in Hillsboro than it is in Austin.
 
it seems the hampton inn near downtown austin is full. anybody else have a list of recommendations of suggested cheap motels?

If it's really crowded, bars won't blow the flame which severely defeats the purpose of even ordering a flaming Dr. Pepper. I've had the blue wave before not realizing what it was. I actually enjoyed it and try to get others to partake as well. Haha.

Going out toward Fredericksburg, you can easily hit 4-6 wineries in one day. My favorites that direction are Becker and Torre di Pietra. The lavender fields at Becker Vineyards is wonderful for photos and Torre di Pietra surprisingly makes the best peach bellini I've ever had in my life using fresh Fredericksburg peaches during the summer time. Another favorite winery of mine is NW of Lake Travis in Marble Falls called Flat Creek Estate.

The Texas Hill country scenery is beautiful and very serene. Wishing I was there right now instead of stuck in Snowmageddon/Snowpocalypse.
 
anybody know how many students they interview and how many students they admit. It doesn't mention anything about that on the admission statistics sheet on their website?

Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they interview somewhere in the ballpark of 250-260 and accept 125. So in other words, they interview about twice as many people as they actually accept.

try the doubletree on guadalupe.. but searching online will be your best bet

Thank you for the correction! Do you happen to know when the adcom meets? I know they wait until all the interviews are completed, so in March at the earliest. I was just wondering if you knew exact dates.

At my interview Q&A Dr. Wilcox mentioned they would be meeting in March around spring break. No exact dates though 😕

That is still there. This program is a main goal of the college so those spots are taken.

Is it bad that I have thought about the same thing about when I get my white coat... :O I told my friend I will wear it all the time hahahaha!

Absolutely not because I thought the exact same thing!! Having 7 is a little excessive, but I see nothing wrong with wearing it all the time 😀
 
random question but anybody happen to know how far the round rock doughnuts shop is from UT? Its the one with the massive doughnuts seen on man vs food.
 
Probably 15-20 minutes depending on traffic and how fast your drive =)

this isn't even the tough part. wait until you receive all your offers and are deciding where to go; a decision that will have immense, incalculable ramifications in the rest of your life FOREVER. haha.....

I actually only applied to UT this year (I'm a sophomore). I'm very certain UT is where I want to go, especially because of their great research staff and phd program. There are a few different specific fields in pharmacy that interest me, but after doing research at UT through FRI, research is def one of them.

thats true but based on your admissons, at least you will be attending somewhere interesting and nationally acclaimed (Chicago-Illinois, Colorado-Denver, etc.). right now it looks i might be attending a bottom tier pharmacy school in the northeast US area, which doesnt look like the happiest place to be if ur coming sunny LA 🙁 for the next 3-4 years. I know how you end up is a role, but I feel not attending a good school like UT would be a huge blow to my self-esteem

they way I see it, there aren't really any "tiers" in pharmacy school, nothing like there are in law schools anyway, job placement is based more on relevant experience that you obtain through residency/rotations. those are what determine if you get hired, but that being said not all schools offer the same rotations and newer schools will not have as many rotations etc.. so going with an established school can be a safer bet, but not by default. The 2010-2011 PSAR states that UTexas pharm accepts and 1%out of state, out of ~120 in the class that leaves at most 2 spots for out of staters. I would not bank on UT if you are an out of stater solely based on that statistic.

moreover, "established" schools are not, by default, more difficult to get into. There are new schools that are selective, just like there are older schools that are easier to get into. You shouldn't feel limited with regard to access to rotations/residencies bc of subaverage 'stats'.

Thanks for the feedback wmw. yeah im aware that the new schools are not necessarily easy, so i picked schools that best fit my academic/extracurricular resume, in addition to some that didnt haha. the funny part is that I want to work in the LA/OC area (unfortunately really saturated), but at UT you sign an agreement where you have to do all your rotations in texas.

btw where did you get the PSAR thing with those stats, i checked the admission site at UT and it said about 10 students admitted were out of state from a total of 40-50 (still wont mean much % wise). unless this counts for something else

The PSAR is the pharm school admission requirements book/manual made by ACPE, if youre applying you should def get it, but might be too late, anyway it has all the deadlines,program info, avg. gpa/pcat scores %instate/OOS, tuition/costs, degree programs, and class size info plus some other stuff for every school in the us. extremely helpful. it comes out every year before the admission cycles start. pretty sure you can download it for free as well off the site just search PSAR
 
For those of you who know. How do they evaluate the interviews? Do they give you a score, write a report, make a recommendation .......
 
If you don't have a bachelor's are you considered as an undergraduate or graduate for financial aid/tuition reasons?
 
Interview requests were sent out on Fri, Jan 21 via email for either Jan 28, 29 or the end of Feb. There is more info on the UT COP specific discussion thread.

The College of Pharmacy considers you an undergraduate regardless of whether or not you have a degree.

If you have a degree upon entering a graduate school, you can file your FAFSA as an independent; otherwise you have to wait until your second or third professional year.
