i've got the samething. ack

Just got the deferred message this afternoon - not that I am obsessed with checking my status pages or anything 😉

What are your stats?

I just got the deferred message as well. I was complete 11/8. GPA 3.61 MCAT 37. Oh well 🙁

deferred 🙁
figures how unpredictable this process is - the one school i REALLY want to go to - i don't get an interview at.. but i get interviews at schools like harvard and stanford..where i really didn't think i had a shot. 🙄

:luck: all with this truly unpredictable process.

damn... those are some high numbers for ppl getting deffered... what's up w/ that??

Ec's, LOR's?

UPenn Update: There is no update. But I was complete pretty late, so maybe it will just take them longer to reject me 😀 I still havent heard anything yet, good or bad. But I am going to drink whiskey tonight in celebration of not having to worry about getting bad news until after the new year! Who's with me?

I leave you all with an Irish toast that you can use at your holiday parties this year:

When we drink, we get drunk.
When we get drunk, we fall asleep.
When we fall asleep, we commit no sin.
When we commit no sin, we go to heaven.
So, let's all get drunk, and go to heaven!

look on the bright side you got a response hehe, i am in la la land

Hi guys, does anybody know if they reject people who they've interviewed before the week of March 19th. I know that nobody gets notified about an acceptance before then, but do they make any sort of decisions for people they've interviewed? March is so far away...

All decisions go out then--rejections and acceptances.

Yeah I know what you mean. I got interviews at Harvard, Hopkins, UCSF, WashU, and Stanford, but Penn, which I live 45mins away from, deferred me. Oh well, important to move on.

So, I am unclear. Is the general consensus that a "decision to offer an interview has been deffered" = a rejection?

People have me all confused.

for the defferred people... how long did it take (i.e. time from complete -> defferred)?

Isn't upenn just as hard to get an interview as the other two schools?
That's pretty sick though. 😀 Harvard. When were you complete??

I've joined the crew.

Completed 10/30
Deferred 12/06

Rocket3004,

Other ppl have posted that it took 2 months from complete to deferral.. I am just as confused as everyone else. I still have the "Your application is being reviewed" message, complete 10/20.

I'm going to go ahead and bump this back up.

Almost 2 mos. and running for me. I sure hope that is good :luck:

i think i hold the record...i was complete in AUGUST, and my status page still says,"Your application is now in the screening process..."

is it possible that they forgot about me? should i call/email them (politely) and ask what's going on?

I emailed the MD/PhD office asking whether or not I'd been reviewed yet, and apparently somehow it did kind of get stuck at the bottom of a stack of papers. No one knows what was holding my app up, but I'm glad I emailed to see how things were going.

:luck: to you.

I spoke to the admissions office the other day, she said that the deferred message (not the screening one that jojo1981 was referring to) meant that you didn't get an invite from the initial review, but they do offer some invites from Nov-March to people who had been deferred initially. I got the impression that they were very few and far between though, especially given the number of people who got deferred, so I'm counting Penn in my "rejection" pile.

My status just changed from "deferred" to "continues to be reviewed"...could this actually mean that i still have a chance for an interview?? i'm leaning towards no, but just thought i'd ask if anyone is better informed on this

I'm not encouraged, but as was said in Shawshank -"hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no hope ever dies."

dude no, complete = rejection, OMG, i just want to go jump off a bridge.

Huh?! I think you mean "and no good thing ever dies......" 👍

Just listened to the audiobook like 2 weeks ago. >)

so if i havent been deferred or invited for an interview, and my message still says the following, i shouldnt hold my breath for good news right? *sigh*

Application Status: Complete

Your application is now in the screening process. Complete applications will go through a series of competitive screenings. Interviews will begin in October and continue into March, 2007. Applicants invited for interviews will be notified via email. The Committee on Admissions will make all final decisions in March, 2007.

ALL ADMISSIONS DECISIONS WILL BE ANNOUNCED THE WEEK OF MARCH 19.

Yeah, I have the same thing, too. 🙁 I searched around SDN, and I remember Severus mentioned that her app for 2005 had this same message for the entire cycle, right up until she got a rejection in March. I just decided to cut my losses and withdraw... assuming they'll even bother to read my letter of withdrawal. 🙄

Ack, complete since September with no change. I wonder which is worse, being in total limbo this long or having one of those deferred messages.

and here i thought i might actually have a shot at an interview b/c i hadnt been deferred yet... oh well. at least now i know.

Well, you never know... if Penn's your dream school, don't give up all hope just yet. It's not over 'til it's over (or, in my case, 'til you say it's over).

yeah i got that too

it now says

"Complete - Additional Application Progress" in green letters which makes me want to think its a good thing? haha

and then ... "Your application continues to be reviewed but there is no change in your status. Reviews will continue until March 2007."

I got this too. I'm wondering if all deferred applicants got this?

mine's still the same message of still in progress....
i think i'm slowly giving up hope in this school

can somone post the link for that status page?

me too. I don't see UPenn on the Wall of Shame, but I'm wondering if they culled their deferred files and rejected some kids or just told everyone to keep waiting...

I got the same thing! Why Penn, where is the love?

Are they toying with us...why dont they just say dont get your hopes up we already know we dont like you....

Wow...very enlightening post. I had stopped checking the status page since I saw my app was deferred. Now it says complete and "Additional Application Progress."😀 Good news? I guess we'll find out...2 months max...

i am about to toss in the towel for this year

Crap...just got the deferred message this morning. So much for having good numbers...they must be Canadian-haters!

I noticed the same change on my page- I wonder if it has any meaning...
Anyone know when the UPenn interview season ends?

I'm joining the deferred club because it seems like the cool place to be! Sent an update email on Tuesday and my status changed to deferred the same day 😀 At least my email reminded them to update my status page instead of leaving me in perpetual limbo 🙄

I like this strategy of sending an update so they can remember to put us out of our misery. Still in limbo here...

Anyone know when the UPenn interview season ends?

Early to mid-Februrary. Usually the very last invites are sent out in the next 2 weeks, but those are typically the last minute deadline applicants. If your app was in well before the secondary deadline, you've probably been rejected and they just won't tell you yet.

BTW, szhao, did you apply for computational biology? If so, they already interviewed and it is likely you have also already been rejected.

I wish they would just reject people as they make decisions, but there's two reasons they don't that I'm aware of. First, it's easier for them to mail out rejection letters and set status pages in batch. Second, in the unlikely case they don't get enough people to interview or get alot of crappy apps late in the season, they can go back to the earlier pile. This is also why nobody is rejected post-interview. They want to make sure the class fills no matter what, so everyone gets a waitlist.

Question:

If you've been complete since early fall and haven't heard anything. It's probably safe to assume that you won't be receiving an interview. That being said, could you call in and "withdraw" your application to avoid the feeling of rejection that comes with a letter in March?

At this point the "You can't fire me, I quit" strategy just might be called for...

Other than not getting a rejection letter, is there any real advantage to withdrawing your application before they reject you? i.e., If I end up reapplying to medical school next year, will it look better to have withdrawn my application instead of having been officially rejected?
