ok i seriously dont think i ever met her...on the day of my interview i only met dean keating...and i didn't go to the 2nd tour day (so that may be why i didn't meet her)

anyway i'll try and call them tomorrow and see if i can speak with her over the phone and get some new info.

Ok if shes listening, I hope she hears this!!

She seemed like a really nice admissions director, and I loved the lunch. Also she was very honest and straight forward and I really appreciated it. On top of that, she has a great haircut and is in general beatiful inside and outside.😎 😎

I am on the HPWL (who isn't) and JWelch told me that because of how slowly the list is moving and where I am on the list... that I should probably re-apply. Basically, she told me this because based on where I am on the list and historical data... blah blah that re-applying would be the safest bet. I could I guess, be the last person on the list, but I am not thinking this the case because she also said I had really good interviews... etc.. They have until August 20th to call you and she has called many people on and around this date... 😕

A sad day it will be on August 20th...?

I gather you are speaking of an email correspondence you referred to in a post last week. It might have been more useful if you posted her email rather than paraphrased.

If the list is moving so horribly why are the secretaries saying they will get to hold-by-committee? They told that to both thedman, and me, by phone last week. Call yourself, and say "Hi I am a student on the HPA list. Does it look like you will be getting to hold-by-committee this year?" They'll tell you "we think so, yes." Doesn't that sound strange?

Someone needs to verify, or reconcile the secretaries statements through Jen Welch before I lose hope..

Hi,

I am on the Hold list and one week they mention no, they will not reach that list and the other week they mention yes, they will!!!

I am rooting that all you guys in the HPA list to get offers!!!!

Let me know if we can get some official confirmation of what the movement appears to be.

Also, is the HPA list smaller than previous years and I have been told that there has been tremendous movement in previous years in August- this is not confirmed, I just heard it. Please let me know if anyone can add on this????

🙄 🙄 🙄 HELP!!!!

Hey Help.

What we know for sure is this: the secretaries give out inconsistent and probably unreliable information.

My suggestion to you is the same as the one to thedman. Email [email protected] and say:

"Hi Mrs. Welch,

I'm on the _______ list and spoke to a secretary in your office the other day. When I inquired about this years movement, I was told that it looks like you will be getting to the hold-by-committee. I must admit I was very pleased to hear that, but it is also true that I heard the opposite a couple weeks ago. I understand how things can change as we get closer to orientation, so I attribute these inconsistencies to that..

I was wondering if you could clarify things for me. Do you agree with the secretaries assessment, or is she just trying to be an optimist..

Thanks so much for your help,
- Help"

MedicationWorks, why dont you email her yourself ? My last post was actually a different email from the previous week. I have talked to Jennifer Welch once and exchanged several emails, and all I am doing is trying to help everyone out by paraphrasing what she has told me. Maybe I am last on the list and that is why I was told that re-applying is the safe bet? I just dont think that the list is moving that fast because there are only three people on this forum that have gotten 'the call' and I guess there would be more if it was moving at the pace of 100 people per year (the number needed to get to the alternates?)? God do I hope that something breaks and all the lists start moving cause I am wait listed at three schools with no admittances yet...

she was out for the last week so the list hasn't moved at all.... She is suppose to be coming back sometime this week, so hopefully a bunch of us will get calls then...

i called the office today on tuesday and asked to speak to jen welch but was told that she will be out till wednesday. so i called on wednesday and asked to speak to her but she was in a meeting. i asked the secretary and she said that the list is moving "very slowly" and the its "unpredictable" if they will get to hold by committee. i asked how much of the list they have gone through so far and she said thats confidential ?????

Just call the office and speak to Jennifer, explain your situation. Because having knowledge about where you stand can help you make lease preperations or if you should shell out 600 dollars for amcas again... She's pretty understanding if you have some good reasons and have been pretty patient with them...

She really didn't tell me to reapply or not. Basically just said if i don't hear within a month give her a call back. So she made it sound optimistic as if I'd be hearing within a month....

Hi All...have been on vacation so have been trying to catch up in the HPA news. From what I have read apparently there is no news 🙁 Hang in there!!!

Spin😀 😀

I actually picked Binghampton.....would that choice affect the chance of getting of the HPA? I thought that if there is a spot open at either campus they'd call and ask if you'd take it...oh wait that is only if you said "either" or "I prefer X, but would go to either" right? I think I said Binghampton but would go to either! Anyway, I emailed Jen Welch, but she has responded yet, although I dont know how much info she can really give me!!
You know I bet it was the first ever 2nd visit day that has f'ed up the flow of the HPA List! The lunch at the Center for Human Performance must've convinced more people to accept their offers!!! Geesh.

Spin😀 😀

On the sheet where we had to mark off our preferred clinical campus, I chose "prefer Syracuse, but will take a Binghamton spot if open." I interviewed on the last day of interviews, so I figured I shouldn't be picky. I ended up taking the Binghamton spot just because I didn't want to wait around a few days, weeks, or however long until a Syracuse spot opened up. If you marked down the choice I did or the one where you want Bing. but will take Syracuse, you can either choose to take whichever spot is open when they call or remain at the top of the list until the next spot opens up. I didn't want to risk it, so I accepted Binghamton. Good luck!!!!

because of our pitiful situation, and sad posts we have JUST became a FIVE STAR THREAD!!!

Keep up the good work!! 😉

*curtsies* *bows* I'd like to that all those who have made this 5 star rating possible: First Upstate and the HPA list, you are the reason for the existence of this thread. To my colleagues, especially medworks and geldrop, you persistence in the quest for HPA info means so much. (sniff, sniff)

Wow...I feel honored to have started a thread that went 5 star!! Woo-hoo!
Hopefully news from the HPA list starts flowing and is thread can take a break til next cycle!!!

Spin😀

Yup, you rule E-SPIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I bet your a real looker in person too.

Geez, Geldrop you are making me blush 😳 😀

Sorry, medworks, I havent gotten any response from upstate at all...actually I think I am dropping outta the race for a spot off the HPA. I have gotten into Wayne, already have an apt and am set to move back to MI...hopefully this means that whoever is after me on the list (making the HUGE assumption I am not dead last on the HPAL) will get their call a little bit earlier now.
Anyway, best of luck getting off this freaking list to all...I wish I couldve been classmates with you, but alas, it was not in the cards!! Still, let me know if any of you get in off the HPA cuz I'll be rooting for you!!!

Spin😀 😀

I got taken off the HPL from Upstate, but I've decided to go to Downstate, so I'm withdrawing. Good luck!

Hey you two, congratulations on your decisions. Being someone who's been in NY for all my life, I can tell you downstate really is great in terms of placement of residents. I personally know someone who got into Cornell Presbyterian Hospital from downstate (and I don't know many people! so thats pretty good).

e-spin I'm sure Wayne State is a great school. Congratulations on your apartment, at least you can be close to your family and be well situated before school starts!! I'm jealous. hehe congratulations. You've arrived so to speak. 😉

To Geldrop, Thedman, Jolu, and anyone else who is going to try to stick it out. I actually got through today on a second attempt! Ms. Welch says they will (nearly certain) NOT be getting to hold-by-committee this year. Also the movement is slower this year than last! When I asked her about my specific situation after explaining some extenuating circumstances, she said based on where I am (not at the very bottom mind you) it's unpredictable if I will be called at all.. And I'm on the HPA list!! Although, for certain, I won't be getting a call in July. Maybe 2 days before orientation? boy this sucks.

Sorry if this news isn't the best.. But I thought you guys would want to know anyways. Try looking at it this way, there is still movement, since Patricia just got called.

so far:
Trizi, geek666, MrBobool, and now PatriciaNg

well I'm having fun waiting. One good thing about this is i never had to spend any money on a deposit at a school yet.

I tell you, if i get in and move up there we should throw a party for us waitlistees that got in...

Hey guys. I'm on the SUNY Buffalo waitlist, but I read this forum often. I heard some news that you guys might be interested in today. Doc AdamK on our board told us that there has been a big problem getting the SUNY financial aid packages out this year. This could mean that more people are holding one or more acceptances longer than usual, and might be part of the reason Upstate's list has barely moved. What do you guys think? Is my logic flawed? Maybe you guys will see alot of movement in the next few weeks as schools start to commence.

Yea I saw AK's post. From what I gathered, the financial aid awards were insufficient because the state hiked SUNY tuition late. So now the schools have to take into account this late tuition increase, and then send out new awards.

But, I don't see how this pertains to people holding multiple acceptances.. It's more of Gov. Pataki being an ass, as usual. Right? 😕

I heard somewhere that people are allowed to hold more than one acceptance until they have all their financial information.

One thing that I don't understand is how Buffalo's waitlist can move so much, but Upstate's so little. Does Upstate over accept to begin with?? The schools seem similar to me so I am suprised that your waitlist isn't moving much. Although I do think that BUffalo's waitlist has begun to drastically slow down.

Good luck to you guys.

Well i got a message left on my answering machine when i got home today. SUNY Upstate called me, and wants me to call back regarding the fall!! So i assume this means I could be off the waitlist.

Lets cross our fingers, i will call her first thing tommorow.

What else would it be?? Your stats are very good (35/3.7/top 25 school). I'm surprised they haven't called you before now. 😉

Well, we'll see when i call tommorow morning. Only thing is I just bought a brand new car and its hardly built for the snow... I have been babying it. Anyone know if those apt buildings have garages near upstate?? Be rough driving it around in snow (RSX type s)

Geldrop,
Just wanted to let you know, they left exactly the same message on my answering machine before informing me the next day that I was in. I believe congratulations are in order!!!!

I don't want to jump to any conclusions...

What happened when you called back do you have to tell them right then if you want the spot or not?? Or do they send you material and give you some time??? I'm hoping the latter, this is a big decision...

Sounds promising to me. They gave me a couple of days to think things over, then I called them back and gave them my decision. I think it's pretty safe to say congrats Geldrop!!!!

I am shedding a tear for your car. The winter in Syracuse is terrible on cars. Salt, liquid calcium chloride, sand..... DAILY!!! Oh yeah, the roads suck too.
I know, I spent 5 years in the area. I was at a carwash 2+times a week.

Congrats on the likely spot, though. It is a good school, if you take it out of the "upstate" context.

ok your really scaring me..... I don't want to havae to keep my car garaged all winter.... Perhaps I can swap cars in teh winter with someone else in my family. But then i'd be missing out on the pleasure of driving it....

its official...

syracuse clinical location. Thats what i would have preferred too!!

Now I wonder if there exists apts in syracuse where they have covered parking garages?? Anyone know?

Congrats, man!!! I am SOOOO happy for you!! I wish I could hang out in the Upstate HPA list for a bit, but logistically it wont work. So take advantage of all the outdoorsy things that upstate NY has to offer cuz I am super jealous!!!! 😉

Best of Luck!!!

when do classes start??

I'm almost thinking about buying a house in syracuse. Can get a 2 bedroom house with a garage for under 40k, with a good interest rate that comes out to like under 500 a month in mortgage payments. And when you graduate you can sell it and get ur money back, well some of it...

if that's where prices are then that's an outstanding idea.

Hey all,

I have been following the progress of everyone's wait-list status. I actually applied to Upstate's Early Assurance program... I was curious if anyone had heard anything about it. Every time I call the admissions office I get a different answer (is this pretty much always the case for you guys??) First time, the secretary told me that interview invitations will be mailed out in the next couple of weeks, and yesterday when I called the lady said that they were making phone calls to set up interviews and had already made most of them. Now I am getting a bit worried. I emailed Ms. Welch about 4 days ago but she still hasn't responded, I'm figuring that her answer will, of course, be most accurate.

My stats are: GPA 3.5, research, clinical, and volunteer expereince, well rounded in music and theater, and I go to a tier-1 school. I also had letters of receommendation from physicians, one of which is on the board of trustees at upstate(MCATS aren't required for the program since you apply after your sophomore year). I really thought that I'd at least get an interview.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

Dr. Trek,

I think I speak for most of us in that we never called Upstate until after we were interviewed and heard some sort of decision (hold, waitlist, etc). Sometimes some schools get upset when you contact them during the pre-interview stage. Maybe it's different for your program though. I'm not sure. But, i'd just try to be patience.

Anyways, they contact all interviewees by phone first, and then follow-up with a letter. They will leave a message on your machine if you are not in.

I hope it turns out well for you. Although, it's not the end of the world if it doesn't. Since you can take the MCAT and apply as a normal applicant. Just try to be patience.

PS: it might not hurt to send them an "update" letter telling about exciting new volunteer work , or grades...If you want.

what day does orientation for it start???

That sounds like a good idea. But it might be difficult to do in one month. It will help you get residency for State tuition after a year or so, reducing your tuition by about 50%.
I really wanted to get something in Madson -- the best value by far! But they are booked until late Sept. They do have 2 bedrooms aprts available August 14th. I called almost 10 agencies today, each one said they expect to have no vacancy next month.

Let me know how the house hunting goes if you are serious.
