USC Class of 2012: Trojan Family Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
congrats everyone on interview and acceptance! 😀

I'm still waiting....

I got a letter from USC today.

-Really? What did it say?!

I didn't get waitlisted.

-Wait, so you got in?

No...

-Did you get denied?

Nope, they didn't deny anyone.

-So what does it mean?

I got put on "active consideration". Basically 55 out of the 150 interviewees got in, but I got put on a "NOT waitlist" and I probably won't find out if I get in until 5 months from now.

Good luck to those who have not interviewed, but you best leave my #250 acceptance letter spot be.

Have fun with the "active consideration" I was on there until Sep. 21 from the last cycle.
But I have round 2 in Jan. So I hope they like Daddy better this time. It would rock to attend SC with this 3.nothing GPA.😆

Ahh please dont say that! I have hope from the active consideration. Can someone who knows about it post on it? thank you

Wow... that really sucks.
I called Admissions this morning.

appararently, people under active consideration may get in after every interview session. They are just put under a different pool of applicants everytime. SO because we were the first ones to interview, im guessing we have the best chance statistically of getting in. The person who answered my phone call also told me people are going to begin getting denied letters after the second interview as well. so... that may be either a worrying or comforting thought .

Anyway...
don't lose hope guys! actively consider being positive throughout! chances of getting in are good!

ive heard that they will continue to pull people off the waitlist until a few weeks before school starts. someone from my lab actually got off the waitlist and she got a call from usc two weeks before school started telling her she got accepted....

also, everytime you complete more pre-pharmacy classes and send in your transcripts or you tell them you have just earned a bachelors degree, it greatly improves your chances of getting in, since i think (though not 100% sure) admission is based on a point-system and they might just give you more points.

good luck!

I am being actively considered........... sigh..............
This is sad.......

I got in~ 😀
I am very relieved because I only applied to 3 schools.

To those that are in active consideration, I wish you lots of luck and don't lose hope. My friend was among the first to be interviewed last year and she was pulled from the waitlist after the second round of interviews. Just start preparing for the upcoming interview.

Congrats to all the acceptees. I'm actively hoping for those who didn't make it. I'd say don't worry, but you're going to anyway, so just try to focus on something else (like school) until you hear back. By the time interviews are done you'll start seeing people post that they've declined USC for another school, and spots that were filled will be open again.

Hi Farmercyst,

Do you know what proportion of the people who got accepted to USC usually declines their acceptances? And How does the ranking system for wait listed people work? Are they assigned a number by the end of March (after all the interviews)?
I have finals tomorrow and Friday.. But this "active consideration" news from USC wouldn't leave my mind....🙁

i dont think knowing how many people decline actually helps. because I called admissions and even after answering my question, im still anxious.

Well... but if you must know, they told me (again) that they send out around 250 acceptances, and only between 180-185 actually enroll (with the exception of last year, of course, when 190 enrolled). yup.

the ranking system will be strictly quantitative based on your interview, scores, and who knows what else. But the waitlist will not be available until after the very last interview in March 29th. also if you are in active consideration (like me), they'll evaluate you again during every cycle. so if you interviewed in Nov 10, you pretty much have 4 chances of get, and then more since people choose to go to other schools.

i suppose you could get really nerdy, meticulous, and obssessive and go onto finding Statistical Combinations, Permutations, and stuff.... but I wouldnt wanna go through the trouble with a final term paper and a final to study for.

I don't, but the numbers that TrjTraddie are what they gave us last year, and during interviews this year, so I'm assuming that those numbers are probably pretty accurate. About 250 acceptances for 180-185 spots (192 in this years class) If that's the case then about 58-70/~250 (23-28%) decline acceptance. With them interviewing only 450 applicants this year instead of 600 last year, I'm not sure if those percentages will hold or not. Either way most people will have interviews at at least one other school making the odds of multiple people choosing a school other than USC well above 0.

I don't have any info on how the apps are ranked before or after interview. I've seen the scoring system for the interview, but I'm not sure how adcom converts them to an application score.

You really should concentrate on your school stuff at this point. You don't need your grades to suffer due to this. I interviewed at Oregon State last October and didn't hear back from them until April, and even then it was a rejection. I got rejected a Loma Linda in February without an interview. It wasn't til Late May/Early June until I finally got an acceptance. You just have to roll with the punches. I've got finals on Friday, Monday, and Wednesday as well. Good luck studying.

Thanks for your encouragement
Good luck on your finals!!👍

With the AU window now open, I have some questions regarding USC for anyone who might be able to help me.

USC received my completed application (including LORs, transcripts, everything) by 9/11. However, the only thing that I remember receiving from USC is the lack letter which was dated 10/2. Well I still have several courses to complete for USC, but I haven't heard anything new from them ever since the lack letter. Can I pretty much just assume that I got rejected since I didn't get an interview invite? I need to know so that I can just forget about my missing courses for USC and instead concentrate on other courses needed by the other school which I got in. (Yes, USC is one of my top choices, but so is the school I got in; and I *COULD* take both schools' requirements, but it'd be extreme overkill and probably lead to some bad grades.)

Anyhoodles, that's all. Thanks for the help!

For USC, there are still two more interview sessions coming up in Feb and March, and they don't notify their applicants until about 4 weeks before the interviews, so that might explain why you have not heard from them yet. Also, USC will take pre-pharmacy classes completed before 8/25/2008, which means you can also take the missing USC courses in summer 2008; by then you will probably know which school you will attend...hope that helps..🙂

As mentioned above, not hearing anything just means they haven't sent anything. You may still get an interview invite without having received anything other than Lack letters. You'll get a new Lack letter anytime you send an update (i.e AU, sending new transcripts, etc) Remember, not only do you need to do academic update through PharmCAS, but any new transcripts also need to be sent to USC (for some reason they like having their own copy). That goes for those who have been accepted, been invited for interview, or just want to get another lack letter because they have nothing better to do.:meanie:

Dear Farmercyst,

I got my acceptance letter from USC, and I am very excited! Thank for your constant encouragement.

Good luck on your finals!

Congrats, I was hoping to see this post. I'll see you next year then.👍

Speaking of finals, I'm listening to a lecture as I type trying to get ready for one.

Hey Farmercyst (or anyone who knows the answer to this question)! I have a question regarding the 1500 hrs of pharmaceutical experience that pharm students must have before getting their license. How do most USC students get their 1500 hrs done? Do clerkships in 3rd/4th year count toward this requirement?

Thanks!
And good luck with your finals! 🙂

question: does anyone bring their luggages to the interview, is there a place to store them if we do? B/c my flight schedule is rather tight and i'd rather not leave it with the hotel personnel.

Per CA BOP only 600 hours (maybe 500, but I'm pretty sure it's 600) can be completed as part of SOP curriculum. Yes 1st,2nd, and 4th year IPPE and APPE count. The remainder of the experience must be "extra"-curricular, if you will. Basically you've got to get a job. You could try to do it over the summer if you don't want to work during the school year. There are plenty of paid internships over the summer either in industry, hospital or community pharmacy. Most people end up getting a job as an intern though and work PT during the school year. You figure you've got 4 years to get 1500 hours (900 really as the other 600 you'll be required to get through school anyway) which amounts to a small fraction when you consider at least 56 hrs per week that you aren't in class or sleeping. Multiply by 52 weeks times 4 years and you need to get 900 hours in well over 10000 hrs of non-class,non-sleeping time. (I know it's oversimplified considering study, and all the other junk you'd rather do besides school, sleeping, studying, and work.) But it's basically 10% of the available time, and that doesn't include the 3 months over the summer.

Call ahead (I'd say at least a week, but you could probably even call today) and let them know your flight will be leaving relatively shortly after the interview and you'd like to know if you can stow your luggage somewhere. I doubt they'll have a problem with that. There are plenty of offices it could be stored in. Most likely in the Student Affairs office.

Hey Farmercyst, thanks for the info😀!

yay I got an interview request! 😍 they apparently sent it to my old apt addy

how long do they give you to set an interview date in case my letter has been sent to another address as well...wishful thinking

for the january interview, you have until jan. 3 to accept the interview invite. good luck.

When was the letter postmarked?

I have no idea.. they called me today asking if I received the invitation because I haven't responded yet and they were leaving for the holidays today. They are resending the invitation and a confirmation.

I have interview on Jan. 26.
I would be really glad if I can get some helpful tips in preparing for USC pharmacy school interview.
Thanks.😀

does USC require that the applicants write a 1 page prompt that needs to be submitted before the interview? i know they did this last year, are they doing that this year as well. i

I believe the purpose of the prompt USC used to have their applicants do in the previous years was to let the interviewers ask questions based on the prompt. But this year they changed it and applicants now do NOT have to submit any essays before their interview, instead the interviewers will look at the essay questions on your supplemental application and ask you questions based on what you wrote. I know this because I already interviewed in Nov.

This is accurate based on the interview coordinator comments to student volunteers just before the November interviews.

Has anyone received a financial aid package (application materials) from USC yet? I wonder when they will send it...

What you need is on the website. They never sent me financial aid info, at least not that I can recall. All the forms were online and you just download them and send them in. Keep in mind they do ask for parent info regardless of age or independent status.

haven't heard back from usc yet, should i apply for financial aid yet?

is it through fafsa at all?

so we need to fill out financial aid info even if we have no idea if we are accepted/rejected to our schools we interviewed for??

Hi Guys
I have interview at USC this month, Is there a interview feedback section on this website? I thought there was one , cant find it. Thanks in advance.

i just got an interview for feb 23rd 😀

got an interview for feb. 23 as well.
finally!!!

🙁 I am just a little sad because school has rolling admission, so the chances of getting in are low now. SHOULD have applied EARLY!!! 🙁

Went to the Info session today. Took 30 mins to get there and 2 hr 20 mins to get back to Chino. Still learned some stuff so it was cool.

Last minute reminder. If you want to save $7 for parking, bring a few quarters and use the parking meters on Biggy Street or San Pablo.
