hi- the acpe (agency that gives accreditation to pharmacy schools) has changed their accreditation policy. Now in order to be eligible for initial or
continuing accreditation all pharmacy programs must be part of an institution
that is accreditated by a federally recognized, regional board. Prior to this new policy usn had the acpe accreditation but now i am confused as to their acpe accreditation status. usn is in the process of being accreditated by the nwccu (regional board for nevada). USN now has applicant status...the next step is canidate status...and then accreditated status. i don't know how long this whole process takes. i will be starting school there fall 2005, but now i am confused as to usn's present accreditation status and the outlook and timeline for approval from the regional board (nwccu) since i guess the acpe status depends on the nwccu status. does anybody who attends usn, may be attending usn, or is in a similar situation have any thoughts about this? i am very concerned.

USN is fully accredited by ACPE. They will be re-evaluated in 2006, two years after given full accredidation for ther first time as per standard. Every school has to renew at some point. Once they renew in 2006, the status will be good for seven years. I am sure in 2006, the regional status will become a factor, but that probably won't be a problem for them since they are expanding at this time. USN will be fine 🙂

I was surprised by this post because I thought as of an incoming student to USN, you would have done extensive research about USN or so. Well, USN is fully-accredited, but like any pharmacy schools, you have to renew your acreditation status (APCE will issue certain extent time for accreditation for a school-depends, could be 2,4,6 yrs).

So we are NOT like you said, "USN now has applicant status...the next step is canidate status"

How does that affect the new schools like South and others who have not yet matriculated their first class and yet are in the middle of nowhere?

perhaps i was not clear enough in my first post- the applicant status i was refering to was with respect to the regional, institution based accreditation board, NWCCU. http://www.nwccu.org/index.htm As i stated in the first post, i am aware USN has accreditation by the ACPE, but ACPE now requires for initial and continuing accreditation that USN be accreditated by a
regional board such as NWCCU. I am concerned about how this new policy will effect USN when the accreditation status is reviewed in 2006. NWCCU will be conducting an onsite visit at USN during fall 2005 for canidate status, but i am not sure how canidate status plays into the new ACPE accreditation standards. thanks for your time.

The candidate status of NWCCU has nothing to do with ACPE accreditation. They're two different subjects. Just like apple and banana. The main reason why USN is trying to be accredited by NWCCU is because we are trying to get students federal loans, and fother funds since most of us are still under private loans now. As of accreditation by ACPE, I wouldn't concern much about it. I'm pretty sure USN will be okie with the accreditation.

ACPE has adopted new accreditation standards(Jan 2005). In order for initial or continuing accreditation by the acpe, all pharmacy programs must in addition be accreditated by their respective regional board. for USN this would be NWCCU. So now USN's accreditation status with NWCCU will have quite a lot to do with continuing accreditation status with ACPE as per ACPE's new policy which can be viewed at
http://www.acpe-accredit.org/pdf/NewLanguageforACPEPolicyNo3.pdf . Prior to Jan 2005, these were two different subjects but now ACPE has elected to take into account regional accreditation in the evaluation of pharmacy programs.

ACPE will take into account that USN has gotten their application for regional accreditation approved by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. Following a self-study report and site visit by an accreditation team from Northwest, USN will be eligible for candidate status from Northwest. Full Northwest Accreditation must happen within 18 months to 5 years from receipt of candidate status. As long as USN is progressing through the regional accreditation process, ACPE accreditation is not in jeopardy.

It should be noted that this ruling affects all existing pharmacy programs as well. If institutions that have regional accreditation lose that accreditation or go on probation, they will still be under the same rules as USN.

Has anyone heard what Hawaii College of Pharmacy's plans are for regional accreditation? 'Cause they don't have regional accreditation and to my knowledge have not applied.

Someone said "Hawai'i!" shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Seriously, I wonder what the heck is going on over there.

I interviewed in Feb and it's been silent ever since. Not that I'm complaining, but I met some nice people there and would at least like to know that they're going to be okay.

Oh, and to make this semi-relevant to the topic, I live near USN. =P
