Thanks! Actually, I already have my pre-commissioning packet with the contract (I received it right after my conditional acceptance). I am sending a bunch of forms in the mail tomorrow, but I am not sending the contract yet. Because I am an active duty officer now, I have to resign my commission the day before I accept the new commission, to preclude a break in service. But my separation date under my current obligation is 9 July, and I am supposed accept my new commission 11 August (I have already attended the Army Medical Department OBC). Thus, I have to put in paperwork for a short-term extension of service to get me from 09 July to 10 August. Once I get the extension of service paperwork, then I have to do the resignation paperwork. Once that is approved, then I am going to submit the contract. The problem is that my local personnel office and my brigade are giving me hassles, so this may take a while. I had to get Ms. Taylor at USAREC, my brigade commander (an O-6), my boss (an O-6) and my career manager at PERSCOM involved in all of this. It's turning out to be quite a big ordeal.

I am not in an urgent situation to get orders, as I already live in Northern Virginia, I work at Walter Reed, and I don't plan to move once school starts. As far as I am concerned, they can hand me orders the day before I start school, as long as I am getting paid! For those of you that are moving, however, I recommend you try to get your orders as soon as you possibly can. It can take a while to arrange shipment of household goods, and the transportation offices won't even look at you unless you have orders.

UCLA Paratrooper- Congratulations! Are you looking forward to the change of scenery? Be sure to pack some light summer clothes for OBC. San Antonio is hot and humid in the summer, but it's a decent city... much different from LA, though. You should get some great field training at Camp Bullis. USUHS and the Army will benefit from such a loyal soldier and soon to be excellent physician.

I finally got the conditional. Funny thing is I heard back from USAREC in VA before USUHS. I get an email saying that they have recieved my conditional acceptance....I did not have the letter at that point. I finally lost patience the day before and called. Fortunately, the admissions person called me back to tell me about the conditional! 🙂
I just sent off papers to DODMERB. I have to get taped for ht/weight. I also had to send in papers for a knee injury that occured in ARMY NALC (ROTC advanced camp) this past summer. Hopefully I will hear back soon. I have all contracting papers filled out--just waiting to figure out what to do about educational delay contract. I already have been granted delay with accessions board, does anyone know what I am supposed to send? Just my ROTC contract?

Anyway, I look forward to seeing you in June for most Army, and Aug for everyone else.

Congratulations to all of you who have heard positive news. I am amazed at how many of us are going to serve in the Army.

I am looking forward to USUHS. I recently went to Madigan Medical Center in Tacoma and loved it. I know that during payback I will probably be in a smaller clinic, but I know that the training is excellent. There were about 8 USUHS graduates while I was there, and they all said that they enjoyed their time at USUHS.

Does anyone know about Vision coverage when you are at USUHS? Caffeinated???? Is there a package like the dental one available or are you on your own?

vision is included in your tricare prime coverage... there is no separate fee like the dental plan.
 
I interviewed on November 21st and am still waiting. I called last Friday and they said that they would have a decision this Friday. My fingers are crossed!

i have an interview at usuhs very soon and am just curious about the demographics for this year's class...

ideally, i would ask you all to describe yourselves, as in age, ethnicity, undergrad major, etc... but that may be too personal. if so, what did you all think of the diversity of the interviewees you met while there? i ask only because the rumor is that the matriculants all lean towards a singular description.

also, of those who interviewed, what do you think is the best/worst quality of USUHS?

After my interview, I'm completely loving USUHS. The morale and the people in general were awesome... at least much better than all the other schools I've seen (although that's only 2 others). And my questions from my above post have pretty much been answered, so please disregard my earlier post.

Now I'm getting ready to go through the physical and just sent my security clearance stuff in. From reading all your posts, it seems like the phys exam was hell. What did it involve that was so horrible??? Someone mentioned something about having to walk around naked in a room full of other naked people?? What was that about? Also, the instructions pdf mentions a dental exam... is that required too (making a total of 3 exams--medical, opto, and dental)? And, how many blood tests are involved?

And then just a comment in response to AlliCat... "sedentary jobs"? That's one of the things I'd think I'd be getting out of by going into medicine, much less military med. Glad to see at least a couple of running enthusiasts here, as I come from a school obsessed with running.

I am going to answer what I can of your questions. I am also a USUHS applicant. I was accepted into the Army.

I agree that USUHS students have a higher morale than students at other schools. The environment is a productive one and it fosters friendship among the students.

Regarding the physical, you get it done at either a military facility or a contracted agency. You should not have to get naked in front of other people, that is usually the HPSP students who get thrown in with the enlisted military physicals. You have a medical exam and an eye exam. There is no dental exam before the officer basic course (OBC). You also have your blood and urine drawn at the OBC.

I am fairly sure that the class has been filled, but there are always people who decide to go to other schools and withdraw from USUHS (I almost did, but then stayed focused on my original plans to go to USUHS if accepted there). Usually the applicants are told to wait up to 8 weeks before you contact the school if you haven't heard anything from them regarding your status.

When accepted, you will first get a conditional acceptance, then after you pass they physical they change the status to unconditional.

You will not have the security clearance process start until once you have started school (the admissions office told me this).

Nichelle (I think that's her name) at the admiss office told me that yes at this point I have interviewed for one of the waitlist spots. However, (and I can't remember if I got this information from one of the med students there or one of the administrators) there is a lot of movement from the waiting list into the acceptance pool. I think the numbers are something around 300-400 acceptance letters sent out for 167 spots. If anyone else has heard the same thing or differently, please let me know.

What republicandr said about the physicals is true.............it's the HPSP physical that is horrible.........the USUHS physical is cake, nothing to worry about other than just waiting during the day for most of the time. As for acceptances, last year they accepted 281 people and interviewed 499.

Cyndi is correct-- vision care is part of your Tricare medical benefits. For active duty service members, you get the standard issue military glasses (the infamous "birth control goggles"), 1 pair of the Frame of Choice (the nicer looking frames), and M40 protective mask inserts, if your prescription is significant enough for you to need inserts. For family members, they can get an exam, but family members do not receive glasses from the military. You must pay for glasses for family members on your own.

As for contact lenses, each military clinic has the discretion to set its own ciontact lens policy based upon time, personnel, and resources. Some clinics will fit contacts only in medically necessary cases (e.g., distorted corneas from injury/transplant). Other clinics will only re-write a contact lens prescription if you are a current contact lens wearer and not having problems. This will require you to bring the contacts to your eye exam (along with the boxes/vials they came in so the doc can know the brand/parameters of your contacts). Some military optometry clinics will fit contact lenses, but only on people who have worn contacts previously. It is extremely rare that a military clinic will take someone who has never worn contacts and turn them into a contact lens wearer (except when medically indicated). The military does not provide contact lenses for active duty nor dependents--you get the prescription and buy the lenses on your own.

There are numerous optometry clinics throughout the Capital area. The closest one to USUHS is National Naval Medical Center. The next closest is Walter Reed Army Medical Center (that's my clinic). There are also clinics at Ft. Meade, Fairfax, Woodbridge, Ft. Belvoir, Andrews AFB, Boeling AFB, Quantico, Ft. Myer, the Pentagon, etc. If anyone ever has trouble getting in for an eye exam, let me know. I will help you set it up.

I was wondering if everyone received their contracts yet? Especially anybody who was accepted by the navy. (it seems like the navy is a little slower than the other branches) I got my unconditional the first week of february. The letter said to call if i didn't receive the contract within three weeks, so I called at a little over 3 weeks and at 7 weeks. Is this something I should stay on top of, or I receive them eventually by just waiting it out. I don't want to call alot and get on their nerves

I have a dumb question--
I am currently in WA, and my tabs expire in July--right in the middle of OBC. Can one get MD/DC license plates once he/she had orders to be stationed there? I do not want to have to buy a year of WA plates for only two months before they are changed to MD. What are the DMV rules in MD regarding military out-of-state plates?

Also--for USUHS army, what kind of patches do we need on the sleeve (not counting USUHS). I am currently ROTC cadet, and have to purchase Class A's for commissioning ceremony in May. Thus, if there are AMEDD patches needed etc, I rather get them now.

Finally, anyone currently near USUHS, is the Keningston area nice? By Wheaton regional park?

Not a dumb question at all. If you are a resident of WA you can retain your WA tags thanks to the Soldiers and Sailor's act which allows you to retain your state of residence while you are in the military even if you aren't stationed there. If this applys to you, you should compare prices for tags you may save money MD isn't exactly cheap. If you want to verify or discuss this with someone give the JAG office at USU a call I'm sure they'd be happy to discuss it with you.

Wow, congrats! I'm not completely sure about this, but I feel like I've been lead to believe that once placed on the waitlist, you will eventually get in. I've gotten varying information as to what percentage gets off the waitlist, anywhere from 70% to 100%.

Btw, how did you find out? Did you call them or did they email / smail it to you?

I actually designated all three branches as my first choice, so perhaps that may help if you don't have very strong preferences.

I called them on Friday 4/18 and they told me they had just mailed me a letter saying I was placed on the alternate list. I got the letter Saturday saying "We're pleased to inform you... designated as an alternate." The way it was phrased I almost thought it was an acceptance.

I've heard the alternate list is different from the waitlist? Someone in an earlier thread said being on the waitlist is better but I also heard from someone else that it is better to be an alternate.

Wow, that's definitely news to me. I never knew there were TWO lists. All these conflicting sources are confusing. I'm supposed to call the admissions office by the end of this week (I'm calling them constantly, so I figured I should limit myself to 1 call/week), but if you find out before then pls lemme know. It's interesting that you were able to reach someone on 4/18... I was obsessively calling their office every half an hour or so that day with no luck.

In the meantime, I guess I should try to see if I can diminish my hugely fanatical interest in attending this school just in case I don't eventually make it in. It's hard, though.

Anyway, best of luck with everything!

The Admissions office told me the definitions of the following two terms

alternate-someone not initially recommended for admission

waitlist-someone recommended for admission but there is not currently a spot available for them

This is off the topic, but this link is an "unofficial" estimate to calculate take home pay for Army officers. I thought it was kind of cool--so for all Army out there, or interested army, you may want to check out. I am not sure how close it correlates with Navy/AF

Has anyone accepted into the Army received their orders and appointment? I received a letter in the mail stating that I would receive both in the mail about 3 weeks after I received that package (it has been almost 5 weeks now). I am looking forward to taking my oath and getting more of my paperwork done before OBC.

Im in the same position, i finished all my paperwork...just waiting for my orders and appointment. its been about three weeks already and still waiting.
 
Has anyone heard anything on orders? I have unconditional, and I already had security clearence (ROTC commissioning). My command needs orders for the commissioning paperwork (I otherwise commission ed delay) and orders are required to get the paperwork started with JPPSO. (They need info ASAP in order to get from midwest to DC area by August due to busy summer moving).

I'd call Mr. Hobiena to check on your papers. I got my unconditionnal Feb 5, and it said I should receive something within 3 weeks. I finally called again last week. He was so nice - he tracked everything down for me and overnighted it.
 
Could any of you who've gotten off the waitlist (or maybe even those already accepted) give me some advice on this...

Once placed on a waitlist for a specific branch, would it be to your disadvantage to tell the adcom that you'd rather switch to a different branch's waitlist? Will this place you at the very end of the new branch's waitlist?

For example, it seems that the AF and Navy are more competitive since they each are allotted less seats in the entering class than the Army. So, if someone placed on one of these waitlists wanted to switch to the Army waitlist, would that help his/her chances of eventually gaining a seat in the class or would any disadvantage be negated by being placed at the end of the list?

I guess my ultimate question is... if you don't care which branch you go into and you and you had no obligation to any one (and you were just desperate to get into USUHS), were placed onto the AF waitlist, would you switch to Army?

A friend of mine who interviewed at USUHS chose Air Force. He called and found out that the Air Force was already full. So he emailed USUHS and told them he'd take any branch. A week or so later, he got into the Army. This is similar to your situation except he was never waitlisted, but I bet if you tell them you will take any branch, it will help.

I am curious to find out what kinda stats all that got accepted to USUHS had. My husband wants to go to USUHS very badly. However he is active duty in the Army right now, and is planning on getting out to do green to gold in January. However he already has 120 semester hours, and they will let him do green to gold in 18 months. His freshmen year really was god awful. He is very bright and wizzed through HS and didn't have to study, so he took that mantality with him. BAD BAD BAD!!! :scared:
Well he is going to try to kick butt on those 18 months. I am getting ready to start my Psy.D program, and I would really like it if he gets into USUHS. Much closer to where I will be in Washington D.C. He does great at standardized tests. He scored a 1570 on the SAT's and the ASVAB he maxed.
Can you apply to USUHS while you are on active duty? Can you apply to any medical school while you are on active duty?
What are his chances of getting in? He science gpa when he goes to apply would be around 3.3 or so, and his overall GPA which sucks would only be like 2.85. However I know he will kick butt on the MCAT's as he always does. He has been a medic in the Army for almost 5 years. He is also planning on doing research while doing green to gold. What do you guys think? He has tons of EC's and will have a stellar MCAT score, however his gpa is what we worry about!
