Hey Dr. Medal - do you remember if it was COL Lisa Moores who gave a presentation during our visit? I'm trying to remember all the people I talked to that day.

I don't remember her name. The army COL, who mentioned she'd done her entire career in DC? I think that's her. Why, did she tell you anything crazy???

Sorry to change the subject a little bit, but I got an e-mail today asking for my fall grades. This something to be excited about or everyone not interviewed so far get it?

I got the same exact email, although I already interviewed back on October 2nd. I'm in an SMP program so they probably wanted to see my fall semester grades before making a final decision on my application. I wouldn't say it's a bad thing for me because it means they are still interested but also not a great thing because it makes it seem that my acceptance at this point is primarily based on the SMP grades. Has anyone been accepted from an SMP and can elaborate on this?

If you don't mind telling, which SMP are you in? I'm in the Georgetown SMP and got no such e-mail, but we have a letter sent out around the beginning of December with what grades we have.

SAME! haha we should be studying for Pulm right now shoudln't we...
Yeah I emailed dr. calloway and she told me that she got my grades with my letter back in the beginning of this month. Then I got this email saying they wanted my full updated grades. I'm gonna send it in as soon as I get the CP final grades. Good luck with this/exam

No she didn't tell me anything crazy. I'm just sending a card and I want to make sure it goes to the right person, that's all.

I went to Univ. of Cincinnati SMP and got into USUHS this yr, but my friend who had gotten into USUHS last year (also from the SMP) had to send his grades in during the Fall semester, I think its a pretty standard request, wouldn't worry too much about it.

Alright well we'll see what happens here in the next few days/weeks.

Hey guys. I'm new to these forums. Basically, I want to become a military doctor, and I found out about USUHS. The problem is I'm kind of worried about my Undergrad GPA. If I work hard, I'm pretty sure I could raise it to 3.5 before I graduate, but I heard most Med Schools only accept those who are like 3.7 and above.

I don't think MCATs will be too much of a problem for me, since I tend to be very good with exams and standardized tests. I just do slightly poorly in classroom settings for different reasons. My science GPA is high, however. I only had problems with my English class, and a Calc 3 class which I honestly didn't need, but I took for fun, and got Cs in them.

Basically, what I want to know is, what exactly is the average admissions GPA, and how selective is it? If I raise my GPA to 3.5 will I have a chance? I'm currently a Junior in my undergrad career, so I have a bit of time before I really have to worry about it, but I'd like to have the information beforehand. =]

As a junior in undergrad, you SHOULD be worrying about bringing up your gpa especially if you intend to apply next application cycle (this June!). A 3.5 should be sufficient to get your foot in the door at USUHS provided that the rest of your application is average or above. Rock the MCAT (30+), get some good rec's, and you'll be on your way to landing an interview.

I was thinking about maybe applying the cycle after next, and taking a year cool-off period, but it's only a passing notion. Would that affect my chances to get in if I did?

Hey also realize that USUHS requires that you obtain a clinical letter of recommendation. So if you were to take a year off and didn't have this, I would suggest working on that aspect of your application.

x2

Now IS the time to worry about it. You want your target GPA over the summer (when you're applying) - not when you graduate. Schools don't choose you on the prospect that your GPA will be higher next year.

Also, x2 on the underestimation of the MCAT. I hope you start studying soon.

:xf:

Yes. If I do take off a year, it will definitely be spent volunteering or interning at clinics or a hospital. But I'm trying to get into a volunteering position at the moment as well.

And I don't mean to say I think the MCAT will be easy. I'll definitely be taking it seriously and of course prep for it as much as I can. I'm simply confident that I can do well. Confidence doesn't always mean underestimation. I'm also confident that I can raise my GPA to a 3.5 by this summer.

Hey Guys,

I got a phone call from Dr. Calloway yesterday offering me a conditional acceptance for an AF seat. Interview was on Oct. 30.

31 MCAT/3.5 GPA

Liesmith Loki,
You have to get your GPA up to a 3.5 to get in. I would recommend doing some EMS or overseas volunteer work for USUHS, they love that type of stuff. On interview day it seemed like 90 % of the people there had similar experiences levels. If you haven't been in a hospital yet and are really that serious about being a military doc taking a year off to get more experience your junior and senior year will help a lot. USUHS tends to select more non-traditional students than not.

Hey guys, well, I declined my acceptance a few days ago. I still feel sick about it cause I really, REALLY like USUHS, but I'm sure it was the right move for me and my career goals. Wish you all the best, and the class of '13 at USU is gonna be an awesome group of people! You guys rock!

Thanks for letting us know, that's very thoughtful of you and much appreciated. And thanks for freeing up a Navy spot! 😀 (although I think the AF applicants are in more need of some pressure release)

How long before your interview date did you guys get notified?

Hey everyone-
I'm a student from Colorado, and am considering applying to USUHS in a few years. Anyone have any idea as to what age range USUHS is considering, I am very familiar with the waiver process and am curious as to what may be available. Thanks! Just looking for some guidance from some older applicants (looking at being 32 when I apply).

I'm pretty sure that non-prior service applicants are limited to age 30, but if you are prior-service you can waiver up to age 35. This may be branch specific though...I'm not really sure.

there was a previous thread on this that was extensive on the details.....search something like "age waiver usuhs".

EDIT: I did it for you. "Applicants (civilian and enlisted personnel) must be between the ages of 18 and 30 by 30 June 2009. However, an applicant who has commissioned active duty time in the Armed Services may exceed the age limitation by a period equal to the time served on active duty provided the applicant has not become 36 years of age by 30 June 2009. If a civilian or military member exceeds the age limit, an age waiver may be requested."

Actually clinical LORs are not required as long as you can give them a reason for not having it, such as not getting to know any physicians well enough to feel comfortable having them write an LOR (this is what I said because I didnt meet any physicians who I felt knew me enough to write something substantive about me, and I was accepted). Also, you don't need 3.7 and 35 to get in. I had a 3.5, 30, did some research for 2 yrs after undergrad, not underrepresented in medicine, and I was accepted to every school I interviewed at, including USUHS (3 Allopathic schools + USUHS). If you interview well this will help you, and apply early in the cycle. Don't stress yourself out and you will be fine!!!

Thanks Goose! I am considering still applying, and seeing what happens. I'm also already talking to recruiters about the HPSP and considering that as an option as well. Happy Holidays everyone.

dont forget to check this thread out : http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=550134 regarding the Army National Guard's new program for med students (AMEDD Student Recruiter program).....I think a lot of older guys are looking in depth at this program because you wont really need to pick up shop for residency or a 12 month deployment (which helps if you have a family)

If I haven't received an invitation to interview by now does this mean I'm dead in the water?

If I haven't received an invitation to interview by now does this mean I'm dead in the water?

if they are going to interview you, they send you a notice 3-4 weeks in advance. (I was complete on 9/15, got an invite on 10/15, for a 11/20 interview). the adcom is probably off for two weeks per the holidays. so they're return first week in Jan and probably put out invites for late Jan/Feb. Now they say that if you are interview in Feb, chances are that all of the spots will be filled, so at best you'll be waitlisted (which isn't nec. a bad thing, b/c there's a lot of movement off the waitlist). There's also the possiblity of being alternate listed, which (for a Feb. interviewee) is probably tantamount to a rejection.

so you have some time left, but not much. if you wanna share some of your application specs (numbers etc), I think people here can give you a better opinion.

Definitely call them. Are you current military? I think what held up my app was my LOA. I was complete in August except for that but the Navy was a little slower getting the LOA to them so I didn't get an interview call till October. (interviewed November 20)

It could also be that they don't have your letters or something. Call them.

Merry Christmas everyone.

I hear USUHS sent out acceptances on the 24th of Dec for Oct 23rd interviewees.

I hope November interviewees hear Jan 1, Jan 15...

yeah, apparently (see the USUHS Class of 2013 thread). I'm surprised, i thought they'd take these 2 weeks off, but i guess not. so they'll probably hand out some acceptances next week too, before new years.

I hope you don't mind my crashing the party! I want to start by congratulating all the recent accepted students! Best of luck to you!

I'm actually writing on behalf of my husband. He's in Iraq (AD Army) and his internet connection doesn't load this site well🙂 He's incredibly interested in USUHS and intends to apply for the Fall '10 class as long as he can figure out how to take the MCAT by the deadline (he's deployed until October).

Undergrad: BA Criminal Justice 3.2cum, 3.4sciences
Experience: prior dental assistant, preventive medicine specialist, EMT certified, CLS certified, shadowing military docs in his down time in Iraq
MCAT: not taken, yet
Pre-reqs: completed, but mostly at 2 year colleges due to his military obligations

Just wondering what suggestions you have for improving his application. He doesn't have a multitude of time or resources in Iraq, but he's not much worse off than he was here at home with a stay-at-home wife and 7 month old daughter!

Thanks so much for your help! And congratulations again, and best of luck to those still waiting!

Your husband's profile looks decent, but I'm no expert in that area. The only thing I can think of is for him to emphasize his AD time in his essays, including any shadowing time he can get with the docs/med staff. Also, my interviewers loved the fact that I had a family. Also, he might want to look into getting his letters of recommendation squared away. I don't know how this would work while he's deployed, but anything is better than nothing. Lastly, if he can't up the GPA anymore (too many credits, etc.) he may want to focus some of his sacred downtime to studying for the MCAT. A good score always looks great!

Anyways, best of luck to all three of you!!

Looking at the description you've laid out I think he should consider waiting until the next application cycle. The earliest MCAT available after redeployment is January meaning he wouldn't have results til mid-February. There is a very small chance he could get an interview with a packet completing that late. The best scenario would be to take extra time after redeployment to study for the MCAT and crush that and then apply in June for the class of 2015. He also may want to look into taking more classes to bring his GPA up, those scores are competitive from a traditional 4 year school but from your description it sounds like he may have a decent amount of online and community college classes which will be a hinderance.

Just my 2 cents but i think his time would be much better spent preparing to submit an application early in the cycle the following year

Thank you for the responses!

As far as the MCAT is concerned, we were hoping there might be a chance he could take it while home on R&R, but that seems an unlikely scenario and we will be making sure that the application is completed and submitted in June. If this means waiting til the following year, that's fine.

As far as his GPA; he has only taken Organic Chem I and II, and Calc II at a CC. The rest of his scieneces were completed at 4 year Universities. He also has one semester (12 credits) of non-sciences from a community college (Liberal Arts, including ENG 102, and Criminal Justice courses). He will be taking Physics II online in Iraq (beacuse he was suppossed to be taking it at home this semester!) and plans to take Anatomy and Physiology when he redeploys just beacause he wants to. He's also considering taking Bio-Chemistry. Hopefully at least the two classes will help out his science GPA (I'm not sure how much), but they won't likely make a dent in his cum GPA due to the fact that this is a career change. He holds a BA in Criminal Justice, plus his pre-reqs for med school, plus transfer credits not transferring...altogether he has 150 credit hours.

He'll definately be studying hard for the MCAT and we're praying he can really bust that up to compensate in some way shape or form for his less than stellar GPA.

Is there a deadline in June that you would reccomend having everything submitted and complete by?

Thank you again!

I'm gonna have to agree with manucelt that waiting until the following year probably the best decision, especially with the rolling admissions process at USUHS (and most other med schools). Even if he submitted his application on June 3/4, whenever the first day is, I doubt very highly (dont want to say definitely though since i'm not 100% sure)that any school would even consider interviewing an applicant without an MCAT score.

So I'd do exactly what manucelt said...study for the mcat, take a few more courses, and then apply on the first day for the class starting fall 2011 (class of 2015).

good luck either way

i'm a USUHS grad and totally agree with the above that he should wait till the next applicataion cycle. the MCAT needs to be a major priority. your husband needs to spend 3-4 months studying for this test. i would recommend taking a kaplan or princeton review course. also, look into ways to boost the science
GPA. sometimes this can be done with relative ease. if your husband has some aptitude in math, this is the easiest way to boost the science GPA. do some investigation at your local college/university and find a professor who is known to be more likely to give out good grades. also, remember that statistics courses often count on the science GPA. sounds like a childish game, but it's all worth it in the end. hope this helps...and don't forget...don't take the MCAT without being prepared.

Received an email today asking for Fall grades. Did anyone else receive an email? I interviewed on November 20th.

No, I didn't. I interviewed 11/20 as well. This is interesting, you had a pretty high GPA going in right? Not sure why they'd wanna see more of your grades. What are you taking this Fall (any med school pre-reqs or important classes, for grades)? What service are you applying for?

It was listed in several places that decisions may be delayed if you've completed fall classes but not reported grades. It mentioned this on the "Interview Update Sheet" as well as the interview email that outlined the response times.

Not sure about their protocol, as many seem to have been accepted before the semester ended. In any case, I wouldn't sweat the email.

yeah looking at past posts, it seems to be a standard request (although I don't know why they'd ask it from some and not others). I'd just get it into them asap. Are they ask for an official transcript, or just a web printout?

Mrs. Hamlette instructed me to simply send her an email listing my courses/grades. I thought that was odd, but I guess if you lied about your courses/grades they'd find out later anyhow. My main concern was whether my new grades would ever reach my file, seeing as how they're so busy in the admissions office. Probably just my neuroticism.

The update form that we turned in when we interviewed said that we needed to send grades (just by email) for fall classes when we got them. (I assume they are only emailing the people who listed fall classes on that update sheet and haven't emailed the grades yet) It isn't a reflection on whether you GPA is high or not, they want everyone's grades if they have new ones.

I emailed my grades before they sent me an email asking for it but I'm sure they would have sent a request if I hadn't. They also could have reviewed some people's files before the grades would be available and then they wouldn't need the grades. (though I'm guessing they are just starting to do our files from the 20th right now since we've just started to get emails about the grades)

that makes sense. I'm not taking any fall courses, hence no email.

wow, they're working new years eve! I guess they're caught up now? Maybe we (the 11/20 folk) will hear back sooner. They said 10-12 weeks when we were there. The 10-week mark is 1/29.
