Yeah, the waiting is going to suck. I hope they just had so many calls to make that they couldn't finish them all in one day and will get back to it tomorrow... I was pretty chill about the whole thing until today, now I'm kind of freaking out unfortunately.

I'm non prior. You? I also chose AF... ha, we have a lot in common. I hope it works out for you as well.

I am a non-prior as well. My dad was a US Marine though... so I heard a lot of "oo-ra's" and "semper-fi's" growing up. It's funny too, his door bell is the USMC anthem.

I read somewhere in this thread... way deep, like around first page, that if your choice of Branch is overloaded with qualified candidates you could be waitlisted within that Branch way before being asked if you would accept a spot through one of your other choices. That scared me since I heard that Air Force and Navy are the more desired branches, but both have fewer billets than the army.

So are you north or south cali? I was born south, at the long since closed Naval Hospital in Long Beach, but have lived in the Sacramento area for most of my life.

Congrats to ya'll with acceptances in hand already, pretty sweet deal! Enjoy the next 3/4 of a year!

I was thinking the same way. If I get accepted I am totally quitting my job a month or two before June so I can go have a last hoorah before the summer training.

So I'm interviewing Nov 6th for sure, so maybe I'll see some of you all there! Just a quick question to anyone who may know: is getting an IM residency at Madigan through the Army fairly straight forward? I hear that their residency program was somewhat in need of people, so if you do well in med school you can probably match there if you so desire.

I don't know if I can answer your question specifically, but I know that the way residency choices are made for USUHS is outlined somewhere within the <www.militarygme.org> website. I am pretty sure each candidate is reviewed on a 10 point scale, and your grades the first 2 years are worth 2 points, your second 2 years worth 3 points and 5 points for your internship year. Now the catch is, if you choose to forgo your residency application for a couple of years and serve as a general doctor on a "tour" so to speak, I believe they call it a GMO, then you can earn extra credit which could possibly equate to an additional 10 points.

I know that was a lot of pointage thrown at you, but the point is (no pun intended) that your pre-clinical grades won't count for too much. Hit the clinical years and that internship year hard and you should be able to get the residency you want, especially since I have heard that the Army offers more residency spots than any of the other branches.

Good luck to you on your endeavors and I hope this helped a little.

This is great

Thanks a lot, this helps me out. Definitely the kind of thing to keep in mind.
Everyone hates on GMO it seems, but is it really that bad if you are interested in FP/IM?

FYI, I'm just a big fan of Madigan because I've visted there a few times/shadowed in relation to HPSP recruitment, and its a really solid place to be, plus close to home. I talked to the head of dermatology, and he was saying residencies apps can have crazy fluctuations year to year. For example, he got like 50+ apps one year for the 3 derm slots 2 years ago, and then 1 year ago he got 4 apps for 3 slots...

Can anyone comment on this? Is this common in the military? I never got to ask someone in IM about this though, probably should...

Ha, ha that's funny about your dad's doorbell.

Since we interviewed so early, I don't think we'll be waitlisted even though the AF and Navy are smaller and more sought after... I think they pretty much said we'd either be accepted, put on the alternate list, or rejected when we went over that blue sheet on interview day.

Sacramento's cool. My sister goes to UC-Davis and she likes it up there a lot. A little warm sometimes though. I've been in the south Bay Area pretty much my whole life. I'm looking forward to living in different areas if I get into USU.

Sooo... will Nov. 6 be getting dangerously into waitlist territory (for army)?

I think you are right about being waitlisted. When we split up after lunch so that the students on the panel could show us around the campus, my guide (who I chose because he was also my host) told me that we shouldn't have a problem getting into our branch of choice because of how early our interview was in the process. I hope he was right and that both you and I get accepted by the AF!!!

South Bay Area? I went to UC Berekely, so I was East Bay for 4 years! Yeah, a big draw to USU for me is the opportunity to see more of the world. Even going to Bethesda will be a nice change for me. I hope that the GMOs are still available by the time we make it through internship though because serving as a flight surgeon sounds like a sweet deal to me!

Ok, I'm working on my theory of why only the ground poundin' army folks got a call today 🙄. Maybe they're just trying to teach them the importance of phone calls (for when they're on their 15 month deployments!!). Ok, just joking....but does anyone who got a call care to share any details? Was it someone from the adcom, or someone from the army that called? From what I remember of interview day (25 Sept) some folks got calls and some just got letters. The paperwork we got that day said that conditional acceptances were made on the 1st and 15th, but doesn't mention anything about calls. Perhaps this is just something that the Army went above and beyond in?

I think it goes without saying (but I will) that I'm AF and am quite flustered about not hearing anything. Almost made me want to jump on the blue to green thing, but then I remembered how much I like air conditioning, time with family, and being able to kill someone before they even know we're there.

Congrats to those who found out...best of luck to the rest of us!

Not 100% sure, but if you search through that <militarygme.org> site it should lead you to some kind of match list over that several years. I am fairly sure I saw something like that a couple weeks ago. Sorry I don't have the direct link for you. But as far as my reading went, it seems as though the military matching is very similar to civilian residency matching.

You should be able to contact some one at the USU administration that can answer your questions though. They are super helpful there!

Oh, but to elaborate further, through the above mentioned website, I was looking at a table that showed how many slots were available for each internship/residency/fellowship, where they were offered and what branch offered them. I think it also gave statistics about how many applicants there were for those slots... but I could be wrong about that. The list was good and had a lot of helpful info. If I can find it again I will post the direct link here.

Good luck man. I am dying to know how and when the AF is going to contact us too. I was the guy to your right during the morning in that lecture hall type place. I was also in your group for the sim center tour - the guy asking if you had any siblings in sacramento. I hope you hear some good news soon.

I hope a waitlist is off the table... if this wait is bad, imagine what that's like.

Did you happen to be the tour group with the short AF guy who just became a dad? There was a UCB grad there... I was the one who went to UCSC.

A lot of people here complain about GMOs, but other than the pay difference (which is a pretty big turnoff) I don't think it would be so bad if you are interested in IM or FP. I'm sure it's pretty likely that they'll still be around in 5 years or so.

Sooo... will Nov. 6 be getting dangerously into waitlist territory (for army)?

Can't say for sure, but it shouldn't be too bad. I was told that USU doesn't wait for the 45T/4.0 students to come along before accepting anyone. If you were invited to interview, they like you and granted you can show them that you know what you are getting into with the military, they'll take you. November 6th is only like the 7th or 8th round, still pretty early. Plus, from what I read, even if you are waitlisted, the Army's list is the fastest moving of the lists. Good luck

haha, yup, I was in Anthon's group. I am pretty sure I remember you now - there was only one other UC-er in the pack.

Yeah, I guess not getting all the additional bonus pays while serving a GMO could be a turn off to some, but I don't have and don't plan on starting a family while in school and I am debt free... so I don't see that being a problem in my case. Plus, I am interested in IM (but not closed to other opportunities/interests). I work as a histotech at a dermatopathology lab/clinic and one of the docs there was career AF - serving as a flight surgeon for I think 5 years. From everything he told me, it sounds like what I am looking for. Plus, serving the GMO will help me when it comes time for residency matching!

So, lets hope I get in before I get carried away with planning for a GMO! Haha. Good luck - I am pulling for you.

Ha, that's a funny coincidence.

Sounds like you know a lot about GMOs & it would be a good fit for you. That's pretty awesome. I have a similar situation (except for the no debt part!) so I am definitely considering it as well. Good luck to you too. Hopefully they saved all the AF calls for tomorrow!

Hi just wondering if anyone out there interviewed october second and heard back from USUHS yet.

nope - expect nov 1st or 15th is my bet

It was the adcom, i suppose, that called. Commander Calloway called me. Man the hating on the army already, i knew it'd happen, but i figured it would be from my good friends in the corps, gotta have some ground-pounding somewhere though i suppose. But yeah it was the adcom that called not the army.

Ok, good to know. I guess I'll have to come up with some other conspiracy theory. And let it be known that there is no true 'hating' of our brothers in green...just some friendly love 😀😀!!

http://www.militarygme.org/4.html

here is the page that has the residencies for the different branches. Can't remember exactly who all wanted this info, but hope it helps.

Also, if anyone gets a call today, pleeeeeeeeease share. I am of the notion that we won't hear anything until Nov 1 (or thereabouts) but I would love to be proven wrong!!!

Good luck all!

Is there anyone who has had experience with the PHS through USUHS? I wanted to find out more about residency options and specifically what the obligations of service entail (like if you do IHS, is your obligation to IHS for the next 10-15 years, or is it PHS in general?) If anyone knows about this you could write me back here, or private message me. Thanks,

Aiicha

from my superficial knowledge of the program (gained through reading and info on interview day) - residency must be primary care, you are committed to IHS, and i think it is a 10 year commitment post-residency

Again, thanks a lot man. Of course, its just my luck that the Army stats are incomplete due to large year to year fluctuations. I ended up just e-mailing one of the doctors I know at Madigan and seeing what he says!

No problem. You'll have to share what those docs responses were to your questions! I spent the day reading some of the milmed pro/con forums and man there are some people that are adamantly against joining. I hope talking to the docs you know helps bolster your decision to join the military.

So I guess since no one has posted any updates about acceptances, no calls were made today... confirming our earlier belief that Nov 1st will be the next big day?!?! Dang, I was really hoping to hear something.

I think this was mentioned earlier, but Nov. 1st is a Saturday...so in the slim chance that i haven't already been waitlisted/rejected...do you guys think they'd inform ppl on Friday, Oct. 31st or drag it out over the weekend and let ppl know on Nov. 3rd ?

At this stage in the game, every day seems like an eternity.

Hey guys, people in all three branches were accepted yesterday, look at the USUHS 2013 forum. If you interviewed in september and didn't hear back I wouldn't worry too much there are only a few that have posted. Google USUHS 2013 and the first link will be the thread.

I'm sure most of you are still fine, i'm just trying to figure out how they determined who got called yesterday and who didn't, maybe randomly? Good luck everyone

Air conditioning - check

Time with family - maybe

Killing the wrong people - probably...that is the problem I saw with the air force down range...laser guided...ssshhhhaaa right!

Hopefully their milmed is better than their pilots, best of luck!

Last year it seemed like USUHS was a little slow to get all their letters and calls out. No need to worry at all!

Also, there should be a lot of movement on the waitlist as well.

i called in, for sept 18th interviews look for something (e-mail/phone/mail?) tomorrow.

Oh man, that will have me reeling with anticipation all day tomorrow. I sort of, almost was willing to wait until November, but now I will be checking my email and cell phone all day tomorrow. Crap. Well, good luck all - hopefully contacts are made tomorrow. Thanks for the heads-up giuseppe!

For everyone who needs to get taped, be sure the measurements are within .5 inches. Otherwise you will need to do it again. These instructions will not be on the form.

are these much - anticipated notifications for sep 18 interviewees only, or do us oct 2'ers have a reason to compulsively check phone/email today as well?

i think it would be safe to say that we can hold off on freaking out until nov 1st

The plaque for the alternates is down in the ladies room!

haha, sorry, couldn't help myself. Love that movie.

I didn't happen to hear anything today. Anybody else have some luck?

I guess we will have to wait another 2 weeks. Oh well. Max Payne is out today... so that will keep me occupied for the night!

Anyone hear back from USUHS yet that interviewed on 9/18 for the Air Force specifically? Thanks.

2 questions/comments

1- They are significantly behind last year's pace of scheduling interviews. Are they just behind or are they getting fewer qualified applicants this year?

2- People who haven't heard yet are disproportionately Air Force, which has the highest applicant😛laces in class ratio... perhaps the people who haven't heard are being held over to compare to the people interviewing in October.

SpeedyK, have you already interviewed at USUHS and is just waiting to hear back (in which case it'll probably be around Nov. 1st)? Or are you waiting on an interview invite (My friend had just been scheduled for a Nov. 6th interview, so you'd be pretty early in the cycle)?

1 - during my interview, the admissions officer told me they are on pace to set a new record for number of applicants. this shouldn't be surprising, given the recent economic events and the future uncertainty of civilian physician pay.

2 - when i called, it sounded like air force guys would hear back soon (she told me yesterday, but that didnt happen). a little frustrating.

just a side note about the height weight thing....you need to meet the most stringent height/weight standard (Army) rather than the particular branch which you are applying for to get medically qualified. I guess ill just do the tape test considering i have my physical in an hour. I guess it wont matter at all if i never get a phone call though =0

Sorry, this was probably explained earlier, but what exactly is the tape test? I'm about 5'10'' 190ish, so I'm a little heavy, but I don't consider myself unhealthy. What is the test and what is its significance?

For those that have done the DoDMERB, what happens during the physical? What should we who have yet to complete it expect? Mine is tomorrow, but I am a little worried because I have been sick all week from a pneumonia-like illness. I have been coughing so much that my blood pressure has spiked like crazy... every time I cough I can feel the veins bulging in my head... sucks if BP ruins my physical.

if you dont meet the height weight requirement (which for 5'10" is 185) then you have to do the tape test. Its a test where they use a formula to calculate your body fat % based on your waist and your neck measurements. The significance is - that if you dont qualify for the height weight requirement then the tape test is how you get medically qualified for service

step 1: pee in a cup and get the dip stick for sugars etc...
step 2: height weight
step 3: hearing test (beep beep beep)
step 4: BP, pulse
step 5: ear, eyes, throat, breathe
step 6: turn your head to the side and cough (always my favorite part 😱)
that was basically it for me. and as for the preconditions from the form the doc just went through it and was like "when did you break your wrist"..."5th grade? you were like 10? ok"

Personally i think everyone's favorite part will be "Rectal: EXTERNAL EXAM ONLY!" or a doc who looks like santa claus telling you, "ok pull down your shorts and bend over. Now i'm not gonna stick it in, i just have to look." I had to laugh when he referred to his gloved finger as "it." Pretty awesome, pause, NOT!!

DoDMERB advice:

- Schedule the eye exam prior to the medical exam and get a copy of the eye exam results to bring with you to the medical exam (even if the eye people send concorde the results).
- For the eye exam, tell them you have had your contact lenses out for at least 72 hours prior to the exam; you're supposed to have done this anyway, but it doesn't make a difference if you haven't.
- For the medical exam, don't workout for at least 2 days prior; otherwise you run the risk of elevated protein levels in your urine, and DoDMERB will eventually make you repeat the urinalysis.
- Bring all relevant medical history documents (esp. past x-rays for injuries) to the medical exam so that the NP/PA/MD/DO who exams you can comment on them; additionally have all the documents readily accessible so that you can quickly send them to DoDMERB if they request remedials in order to qualify you.

Know what the formula is on that? I'm betting I'm screwed on that test too. My waist is small ~32''-34'', but in highschool I worked my neck out a lot and it's pretty big. Then I stopped working out and a small layer of fat grew over the existing muscle.

the smaller the waist and the bigger the neck - the more "muscle" the test determines you have on you. So, youre fine. Im in the same position as you - same height and i need to cut off about 10 lbs
