I will start looking for apartments in the area in March, with the hope of moving in during June. Looking up places online pretty much confirmed the high cost of living all the other Texas medical schools said was a drawback to Houston, but I can definately live with such a minor inconvenience.

Hey man if you want to feel better check out the cost in NYC. I came down here and can't BELIEVE what you can get the for the price!!! Its all perspective.

Is anyone looking into having a roommate to help with the costs of living??

Agreed. I think Houston is pretty darn cheap for a major city. Try Atlanta if you want to see high prices in addition to bad traffic.

Any existing (or new) Houston students know when the 2005 Welcome Weekend is? Trying to make plans in advance.. 🙂

We're in the process of planning Welcome Weekend right now, and I'm not totally sure when the date is. Last year, we had it on the last weekend of March and I'm assuming we'll stick with that. Whenever we hammer out the details, I'll post them and let you all know. Just make sure that you come if you are able to. Last year was a blast. Hope to see you all in March!

The question is not if we will be there.....the question is will Stewie?

And the guy in the wheelchair...You know, Putty? Can he come too?

He he he...freakin' sweet. I think Stewie has a prior engagement (something about enslaving the human race???) and Joe is on duty that day (he he he, i said duty). But I'll try to get Brian to come with me.

got back from Mardi Gras yesterday, still feeling not so good today, lol 🙂

anyone else find it a bit odd I'm learning how to give a prostrate exam on Fat Tuesday???? Happy Mardi Gras!!!

I'm going to Galveston today for their Mardi Gras...not quite the Crescent City but it'll do.

And good luck with the anal probing...I'm just glad I have a year until I have to do that 😳

Last year they had a picnic type event for us near the rec center. They had a couple of kegs, margarita machines, mexican food, vollyball if I remember correctly. Then we went out to the bar that night and we got free drinks for a couple of hours. Saturday we all went to Astroworld. It was pretty fun and I got to meet a bunch of people. Several people found roommates that weekend too. We have a class meeting this Friday and should have almost everything settled by then so I'll let everyone know

Any strippers? :meanie: Don't let us down, Peter, we're all counting on you folks. Here's to having fun with my life over the next 5 months for the last time until I'm 30-something!

I'm pretty sure I'm going to start apartment/condo hunting real soon. I'm probably going to keep my eye out for a two bedroom two bath and try to find a roomate from UT Houston med. I'm pretty sure I don't want to live alone and A roomate in the same crazy med school situation may help. I hear some people find roomates during welcome weekend. That may be the best option 🙂

I can't promise any strippers, but I'll see what I can do 😎 And I must say, although I agree that you should have a blast over the next 5 months, believe me that you will be able to have a lot of fun, at least during the first 2 years of med school. Sure it's a lot more work, and I thouht that I would have no life either, but I still go out just about as much as I did during undergrad. all work and no play makes AJ a dull boy

I've started my search in trying to find a reasonably priced condo that is somewhat near the medical center or on the metro rail/metro route. If there are others doing the same, if you find something, could you let me know! Please!

😀

Bump!

Also I ordered my first medical school book. It is the biochem book they used last year.. it is less than half price new at this link:

http://www.superbookdeals.com/cgi-bin/moreinfo.cgi?item=85020&bisac=

Also, what does everyone have planned for this summer??

I am a scribe in the ER in Fort Worth, but once my husband finds a job in Houston we will be moving there (after May 15th) and I don't want to be bored all summer.

I admire your enthusiasm, but I'd warn everyone not to buy too many books until you talk to some actual UTH students. You'll find that many of the books on the list aren't actually used by many students. Additionally, if you sign up for a second year student, you'll probably get a bunch of books free.

Haha, please look in to it, I'd be very appreciative. I'm glad to hear that I'll have some time to toil in my non-medically related extracurriculars, aka chicken theft and cattle mimicry accompanied with a hint of bourbon. Any work makes AJ a dull boy 😎

If you are referring to the El Paseo that they are building right now, I might be living there.

Anyone considering purchasing a condo though? Considering how much money we will be putting into renting an apartment over 4 years, purchasing one would not be a bad idea. Anyone considering. Pros and Cons...

yeah that one...from what I heard about it, it seemed to be neat, i heard the shuttle is a big plus (someone correct me if i'm wrong about either of those)... and i really didn't feel like doing much apartment hunting.

i was thinking of maybe buying a condo etc. after my first year when i'm more situated and know the area and all

I am, as I will be in Houston for at least another 5 years (MD/MPH) which means that I am now hunting for a better paying job in order to save up some scrilla for a downpayment. Here's what I'm thinking:

Pros:
-Don't end up wasting four years of rent money
-Build equity and your credit
-Have your own place

Cons:
-the initial expense is much higher than that of an apartment
-Responsible for all maintenance
-It's an investment, so there is risk that the price may fall or that you may incur serious maintenance costs, which could kill your return
-You have to spend the time and money to buy it and eventually sell it
-If you get a 2-bedroom, finding a roommate could be tough
-UT-H housing is really convenient, affordable and you'll be surrounded by students and not post-menopausal women bitching that your studying is making too much noise

Bottom line, my credit sucks, the 'rents are interested in buying real estate in the loop and are willing to invest with me (which will lower my monthly payment), I have time to find a place, my bro works in Houston and would be willing to live with me (whether I am willing to live with him remains to be determined) and I hate the idea of wasting my money on an apartment over the course of five years when I could be investing it instead. That's about as much incoherent thought as I can muster on the topic for now. I'd be interested to hear what other people are thinking about this. Late

I've made arrangements to go down on the 19th of this month to look around for a condo. I'll let you guys know how that turns out when the tie comes.

I ranked TCOM 2nd out of two, and I got a letter from them saying I was waitlisted at TCOM after matching to UTH. What's up with that?

Here is the link to the form you will need to take to your provider to verify your immunizations. Took me a while to find it, because it is under the registrar's site and not the student health site, that's weird.

Immunization form (pdf)

Hey, I just got my damn letter today (Finally!) If I send it certified today, do you think it will make the deadline? I live in the loop near UH.

You'll get a big packet of stuff with all of this in it. I think you get 2 packets in all. They wait till everyone to accept their acceptance because they also include a list of the entering class.

Just be patient. 🙂

It should but I'd definately get it out today to be safe. I really don't think the 2 week deadline is enough time, esp. for people living out of state.

I live in housing right now and I'll be in the new housing in July. The shuttle bus is definately convenient and it's free, but they have kind of sucked this semester. I might try riding the light rail next year.

That's when I'm going apartment hunting. Are you going through an apartment-locator service? I called this one place and they were already pushing several apartments on me so I told them forget about it.

To the person who bought a textbook already: I'm thinking about buying my Netter's Atlas just to look at the pictures.

I'm quitting my job tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!YippiE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't buy Netter yet. If you wait until school starts, you can get one when you join AMSA. If you really can't wait until then and you want to buy an anatomy atlas, I'd suggest Rohen. It's pictures of amazing dissections of actual cadavers, not just drawings like Netter. It's great for studying for practical exams because, unfortunately, things don't usually look like they do in Netter.

I'm going to be buying a place so I've set up an appointment with a realtor to show me around. So, what are you going to do when you go? Just look around on your own?

I'll just call around until I find an apartment locator that I'm more comfortable with. Worse comes to worse, I have a few places in my mind that I found on rent.com & apartments.com so I'll take a look at those. I have several requirements (cats, w&D in unit, near rail/shuttle) so that should narrow it down. And my Mom is coming with me (hahaha she's paying for the hotel - i love you mommy!)

Also, there is moveforfree.com if you are moving inside the Houston area or from Dallas. And there is another houston website that gives you a rebate. They are apartment locator services that pay you for using them.

Hey there,
Just found out that I'm on the unofficial UTH waitlist...which is so much better than a flat rejection!
Does anyone know approximately how many go on the waitlist and ultimately how many get accepted?
I figure that it varies from year to year, so I'm just looking for speculation or rumor.

I was on the waitlist two years ago, and from what I can tell only about 5-10 people made it off the list.

Has anyone called to verify that your letter of intent was received, or had the urge to? I sent mine certified mail and the usps website says it was delivered Tues at 5:55 am which seems like a weird time to me. Am I just ultra-paranoid? :scared:

Mine was delivered certified mail: 5:55am on Monday (Feb 07). Very weird.

Mine too. Feb 10th at 5:55am.

Yeah, I called to make sure that they got my letter because I sent it from Connecticut where I am stationed with the Navy. I wanted to make sure it got there on time. And I don't really totally trust the postal service. Plus, on the topic of 5:55 am, they probably have a central mail room for the HSC, and that is where the post office notes that the letter was received. I wanted to make sure the letter wasn't lost between the mail room and the admissions office. Now that is paranoid.

Brain said:

Instead of us all calling separately to confirm that they received our letter, they can just cut and paste the list of those they have heard from right here on this page.

Seriously though, I am going to call today or Monday.

It would really suck to lose your admission because either the USPS or someone getting the mail at 5:55 am lost it.

Tiffany

P.S. It takes a certain amount of diligence (read paranoia) to get into medical school in the first place.

I what curious if they told you yes it had made it to the admissions office. Cause I think I'm like everyone else - very paraniod about making sure I have everything in place.

Well until I read this thread I hadn't worried at all about my letter getting there. But now you guys have gotten me concerned, so I'll be calling today to check. 😳

Emily

Ok I just called and I was told that the letter got there. But she only asked my name, and it's a common name, so I just hope there's not more than one of me. Agh, now I'm being super paranoid.

In my constant search for validation, I checked the TMDSAS website again. Validation date: 2/10/05. Very satisfying.

Congrats! 👍

I haven't validated yet, but then again, I only sent in my Fall 04 transcripts last week. They received them, but no validation yet... 🙁
