yeah, I hadn't heard anything about it either. I don't even have all of my financial aid stuff in yet 😱 Is this for sure?
 
I think it is required of all entering students. If you go to the financial aid website it says that all are required to do it. It isn't hard, just time consuming. You have to answer questions that the answers to are right above....

It looks like it MIGHT be required of all students, but until the medical school states that we must do it, I think you are giving yourself a little extra work prematurely (just my opinion). Additionally, on the financial aid website there is a link for "Medical Students", but not for members of any other branch of the school (indicating the possibility that our financial aid is handled separately)......

OK just looked through the site some more and it appears there is a place on the institutional aid form to check medical student, but again, until they tell us the hows/whys I for one am going to wait. Maybe I'm just a procrastinator.

Very good advice. I know you are all really excited to get started, but don't worry about it too much. The school will let you know about everything you need to do. The only thing that I can advise you to do early is get your FAFSA complete. 😎
 
I just didn't like our thread being on like the third page!
 
Today I received a letter from UTSA that stated they needed my W2's so that they may offer me a financial aid package. I find it very generous of them to assist in paying for my UT-Houston tuition. Three cheers for UTSA.
 
I must confess that I called yesterday to verify that they received my letter of intent. They were really nice about it if anyone else feels the urge to call on Monday. I was also told that we'll be getting a packet with more information at the end of the month.

I called too, the only thing is mine DID get lost in between the mailroom and the admissions office, so I faxed them a copy.
 
I'm going apartment searching next weekend and I thought y'all living in Houston might be able to provide some advice. Are there any areas/streets/ghettos that I should steer clear of? I was warned to stay away from the Astrodome. Do the Astros still play there?

Also, what do you think of the area north of the TMC (museum district)? Seems more expensive, but is it worth it?

P.S. I am a single, paranoid female.
 
Does anybody know how many people applied to UTH last year (or this year), or what the % acceptance rate is? Just curious. (Really, though, I want a bragging data point to give my mom).

No, the astros do not play in the astrodome- it was scheduled for demolition but now I think they are going to develop the inside and such. The texans play at reliant stadium which is ptty much right next door tot he astrodome. The astros play at minute maid park- both of these stadiums are brand new and have retractable roofs.

That particular area of Houston is hit and miss. There are MANY nice areas in that area but they will quickly fade into ghettos very soon. The third ward is notorious in that area. The museum district is very nice- a little more pricey than other places. I'm originally from Houston and I think my dad will be looking at 2 bedroom condos along the rail line or something convenient. Your best bet is to just drive out there and see what you like!

I've lived in South Hampton or the Museum District my entire 4 years here. It is a little bit more expensive, but it is nice to live in a non-cookie cutter apartment or duplex with wood floors and a neighborhood where you can walk at night to a bar or restaurant without the fear of being run over. If you can afford it (or get a roommate), I would suggest it; not living in an apartment is very nice. That being said, condoland (by the astrodome) does have some nice, safe apartment/condo complexes. The better ones are the Greenbriar and the Lanesborough (although I hear the management at the Greenbriar is difficult at times). Many med students live in Archstone Medical and are happy there, but I remember once being there visiting a friend during my first year when a man shoot himself in the parking lot with a 12 gauge (it was an interesting site to see). I would also look in midtown, as there are nice places there that are on the rail line. If I had to stay here another 4 years, that would be my second pick (behind where I am now).

I just talked to the admissions office and the Welcome Weekend ("Second Look" type event) will be on Saturday and Sunday, April 9th and 10th. On Sat, 12:30 to 4:30 at the Rec Center with food, pool, basketball, partying, hopefully beer, etc. On Sat night, there will be a social, didn't get the time or location of this. Sunday will be a housing open-house for the student housing (I guess the one that is run/owned by UTHSC, and maybe some houses owned by students, but she wasn't sure about that. I think the whole welcome weekend is run by first year students, and the retreat in August is run by second year students.

I don't know if I will be able to make it to the W/W since I am in Connecticut, but I hope everybody else is going!

It's the same class, it is just that in August, you will be the first year class.

That's too bad...hope everyone else can make it. Welcome Weekend was awsome last year, and I'm sure everyone will have a good time this year as well.

One of my friends that matched at A&M was telling me how they've got this incoming class list serve going...I was wondering if we had one that I just didn't know about. It seems like a pretty good idea?

Does anybody know anybody that needs free access to the official MCAT online practice tests (the ones put out by AAMC). I took the August MCAT and the access is good through this April's test, I will be more than happy to give them my account info. It is access to all 5 tests that they offer. PM me.

This may be a little off topic, but my cell phone contract is up and I'm wanting to switch carriers from ATT/Cingular to something else. Can anyone in the Houston area near the Med Center tell me which service provider has good reception in the area? Thanks for your help.

Never had a problem with Tmobile, plus its a 1 yr contract and you can get a cool new phone for free or with money back (Im getting 200 bucks) through amazon.com

Don't go with Sprint. I'm stuck in a contract with them until next January and cant wait to get out. Horrible customer service 😡 But as far as reception goes, I don't think you'll have a problem with any provider. Some areas of the school dont get good reception (anatomy labs, leather lounge sometimes) but that doesn't have much to do with the providers. Just stay away from Sprint

I second that. I think Sprint specifically trains their employees to be as unhelpful as possible.

go with whoever you talk with the most and what they have since those minutes are free (friends, family, etc)

and sprint has always been good to me, probably just depends on who you get. I also always mention how long I've been a customer which helps.
 
Hi guys,
This may sound a little stupid 🙂 , but just how hard would it be to find a roomate in our incomming class if I went ahead and found an apartment. I currently live here in houston, but I live on the northwest side and I want to find an apartment/condo hopefully in the med center. Is it a dumb idea to go ahead and look into two bedroom apartments without having a roomate in mind. I was hoping to room with someone from our class, but I have no idea when I will be able to meet people aside from welcome weekend. Plus I don't want to sound like a weirdo going up to people on welcome weekend and asking "hey do you want to be my roomate"? What do you all suggest, those of you who have been through the process, and those of you who are thinking about it.

That's exactly what I did last year. Right after Welcome Weekend I got on the waiting list and got a 2 bedroom at UT Housing before I had a roommate. I just e-mailed people from the Housing Book. I ended up with a great roommate who I get along with really well, but you never know how that is going to turn out. I'm fairly sure that you wouldn't have any trouble finding a roommate that way. 👍

I heard about the UT Housing and how there is a waitlist (my friend said she placed her name on the list in Dec. 2004 for this coming year, Aug. 2005). Where can I find more info/put my name on the list? And what is this UT Housing's official name.

Usually it doesn't come until the day before or the day of classes beginning. Sorry 🙁
 
I would like to know too. My impression is that we will not get money until classes start, but that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I guess you have to have your own money for rent deposits, etc.

I emailed admissions to see if they would put a link to this forum on the entering students webpage.

I'm in GA right now and planning on coming down to Houston over spring break (around march 5th) but I dont think I'll be able to come in April. How important is this welcome weekend thing? Will we receive official info on it or is it unofficial? This may sound like a stupid question.
