Looking back i definately wish i could have had several months to shop around for first year books. My ADVICE (and only advice) is to use the book list that will be published from the school as suggestions not a rule. I found for the first year:
First Semester:
1. BRS-Biochemistry (an absolute must)
2. BRS-Gross Anatomy (Another MUST)
both of these are really helpful because you will be taking a NBME
(national board of Medical Examiners) test as your final in these classes.
3. The Netter Atlas is a must along with Netter Flashcards
4. The Review book and text book for Developmental Anatomy (DEVO)
were great as well.
Second Semester:
5. BRS-Physiology and maybe Neuroscience.
You will find what works best for you as you begin. Hope this helped.
but don't buy anything till you meet with your second year!!! they will most likely give you some books they no longer need.
I agree with BRS Physiology and Biochem. The Physiology text (titled 'physiology') written by the same person who writes the BRS is also EXCELLENT. Soooo wish I had found it before I was already done with the class but I'm still using it to review for Step 1.
But here is where it gets confusing, different people will recommend different books. I don't think the BRS Anatomy is necessary. Your syllabus will have everything needed (I did well on the tests, lab practical, and shelf final using just it.) The BRS is just too dry and too dense for step 1. NEtter's is great (you can get it free signing up for a certain med group) and so is Rohen's. I used those two plus my syllabus and the lab manual.
Embryo didn't use the book at all and did well. The question book will have maybe 2-5 questions per test pulled from it but this is something you are likely to get handed down as well. If anything, get the BRS.
histo is fine with just the syllabus. add neuro to that too. I but I have heard high yield neuro is a great review for step 1.
micro - micro made ridiculously simple.
immunology - yuck.
pharm cards for pharm and the fabulous charts my class has been making along the way.
brs for path (anotate as you go!)
genetics - syllabus
behavioral - hield yield or brs is more than enough for step 1.
and its back to the books for me. 1 down, 6 tests to go.
🙂
