Can you join that group if you are at a different school, and if so, how does one do it? My computer skillz, unlike my bow staff and nunchuck skillz, are severely lacking.

Thought of the day: On the topic of computer illiteracy, why the hell is a mouse called a mouse if the stupid thing doesn't even look like a mouse? CS kids, particularly those who named these silly things, have severe creativity issues

I don't know, maybe if they had caught a delicious bass things would have been clearer for them?

 I'll destroy you, cause I'm the tetherball MASTA. Any chance they can add a tetherball round robin to the list of activities during the welcome weekend festivities? Let me know soon, cause I'm totally out of my game and would need to start training. Plus, I'd need to order some new sweat bands (I get them custom ordered cause I have fat wrists and ankles, no joke).

Then that would have to be one smart fish, and not even billy bass himself would cut it

No idea man, I think it may be all UT people in the group? My computer skills are lacking just as bad as yours. But a mouse...if you REALLY use your imagination...can kinda pass for a mouse (closer than any other animal) with its shape...but the wire (which I'm guessing would be its tail) comes out of the side I figured to be the head. who knows 😕

Hi everyone!

Congrats to all of you on your acceptance into UTH! 😛

I'm currently on a waiting list, and was wondering if anyone knew if I could send extra letters of recommendation from grad professors, current employers (physicians) etc... or does UTH admissions ppl hate being bothered with stuff like that?

if anyone knows... please help!

Thanks and CONGRATS AGAIN! waiting sucks! 😱

Hey just out of curiosity, I wanted to know how many people are waiting on decision from baylor or out of state school and will go to that school if accepted. Please let me know b/c I REALLY want to go to UTH.
Thanx

Has anyone heard which review books are good for first year classes at UT-H? Maybe we should start to get a list together.

Random question: Anyone know what the overall property tax rate is in Houston? I'm struggling in my search, my lack of computer skillz are emerging at a most inopportune time 👎

AJ

Here's a rough estimate: http://www.westurealestate.com/taxes.htm Looks to be about 3% in Houston city limits.

Also look around at the link to Harris Co. Appraisal District

Did anyone get that mammoth of a package today? Man, I didn't realize there were that many real estate agents in houston!!

I was on a first date once and the guy ordered seabass for dinner since he thought it would be funny. It never raised his computer skillz.

Goodness, I'm glad that I didn't date that guy... my name rhymes with something you do with butts, and I don't think I would have appreciated the same humor he showed you. 😉

Ohhhh yeah! 🙂

Before you start school, you should pick up "Iserson's Getting in a Residency" and "First AID for the USMLE" - buy them used off half.com or something. The first gives you some great advice to focus your efforts towards picking a residency and making the connections to get in (surprisingly, you should start looking around soon). I've heard first aid is a great book to have while you're studying for your basic science classes (and getting your mind in gear to think about Step 1).

Some other books that were recommended:
Lippincott’s biochemistry
Clinical pharmacology/ microbiology "made ridiculously easy"
High Yield Books: (ex: Pathology, gross anatomy"
Underground Clinical vignettes
Board Review Series (aka, BRS - they are striped)
Pharm cards

Color Atlas of Anatomy: A Photographic Study of the Human Body by Rohen and/or Netters' Anatomy Atlas
& the small 'Robbins Review of Pathology'

- I got these book recommendations from MS friends, and off amazon rec lists. I get the idea that you don't NEED any of this (except first aid and iserson's), but they can help you focus your studies for the basic sciences/ Steps 1 & 2.

Looking back i definately wish i could have had several months to shop around for first year books. My ADVICE (and only advice) is to use the book list that will be published from the school as suggestions not a rule. I found for the first year:
First Semester:
1. BRS-Biochemistry (an absolute must)
2. BRS-Gross Anatomy (Another MUST)
both of these are really helpful because you will be taking a NBME
(national board of Medical Examiners) test as your final in these classes.
3. The Netter Atlas is a must along with Netter Flashcards
4. The Review book and text book for Developmental Anatomy (DEVO)
were great as well.
Second Semester:
5. BRS-Physiology and maybe Neuroscience.

You will find what works best for you as you begin. Hope this helped.

Yeah It arrived at my parent's house and my mom called me up to read me it all, even though i told her most of it was online.... I think she is way too excited. 😳

Does that package have to be signed for when it's dropped off??

Hey everyone, just in case you don't already know about it, there's a website maintained by the UTH students. It has all of the old notes and stuff on it...
Here's a link if anyone wants to check it out.

Thanks Emily!

Just got my UTH packet. Looks like I'll be purchasing a new computer. On a lighter note, I did just find out I'll still be covered under my parents health and auto insurance for the next 4 years.

I believe that the proper nomenclature is "postal professional," dude. You get in to med school, and all of a sudden you can't address a postal employee by his proper title. Elitest 🙄

but don't buy anything till you meet with your second year!!! they will most likely give you some books they no longer need.

I agree with BRS Physiology and Biochem. The Physiology text (titled 'physiology') written by the same person who writes the BRS is also EXCELLENT. Soooo wish I had found it before I was already done with the class but I'm still using it to review for Step 1.

But here is where it gets confusing, different people will recommend different books. I don't think the BRS Anatomy is necessary. Your syllabus will have everything needed (I did well on the tests, lab practical, and shelf final using just it.) The BRS is just too dry and too dense for step 1. NEtter's is great (you can get it free signing up for a certain med group) and so is Rohen's. I used those two plus my syllabus and the lab manual.

Embryo didn't use the book at all and did well. The question book will have maybe 2-5 questions per test pulled from it but this is something you are likely to get handed down as well. If anything, get the BRS.

histo is fine with just the syllabus. add neuro to that too. I but I have heard high yield neuro is a great review for step 1.

micro - micro made ridiculously simple.

immunology - yuck.

pharm cards for pharm and the fabulous charts my class has been making along the way.

brs for path (anotate as you go!)

genetics - syllabus

behavioral - hield yield or brs is more than enough for step 1.

and its back to the books for me. 1 down, 6 tests to go. 🙂

Hey y'all, I'm thinking it would be sweetness to show up to Welcome Weekend with some sort of UT-H paraphernalia already in hand. Anyone know where I can get something like that...say perhaps a cool bumper sticker?? 😎

Too much orange in the new bumper stickers for us Aggies...guess I'll have to make my own 🙁

For current UTH medical students:

I must soon choose between the two Houston medical schools. I realize yall may not know too much about what goes on across the street, but in your time at UTH, what advantages over your TMC neighbor have you recognized?

I feel that I can’t go wrong either way, but any input will be greatly appreciated.

Funny you should ask. My class is selling bumper stickers and my roommate is a class officer, so if you want one, PM me and we'll work out the details.

Here is a pic so you know how they look. They are clear on the back so all that shows is the text.

Funny you should mention that, because my roommate is an Aggie. I took this picture of the back of his car about 10 minutes ago...

 That's awsome...I haven't even put my Assn. of Fromer Students sticker on my car yet, but that gives me a good idea of what it will look like, should I get the UT Houston one...I just don't know if I can allow that much orange on my car 😎

I have many friends who attend Baylor, and I once had to make the same choice you face now. I chose UT over Baylor because I felt more at home at UT than I did at Baylor. To me, the people at UT are more friendly. I feel we are "taught" more; Baylor "compresses" the first two years into a year and a half, but they have to come to basic science lecture once a week throughout their 2nd-3rd years while in clinic, so I don't know how truly compressed it is. I have also had friends tell me they didn't feel like they are exposed to as much material as we are or to the depth. I spent a good deal of time explaining a lot of concepts to them that weren't covered in lecture there that were here. We do take more call during third year, but I think it pays off when it comes to Step 2 and knowing what to expect in your intern year/residency.

Again, both schools are great and Baylor does have the name. If you want to do neurosurgery, urology or pediatrics, Baylor has more to offer (in my opinion). However, you should still go where you felt you most belonged when you interviewed at each place. Both are great places and will provide you the education necessary to become a great physician.

Yes inded, plus UT-H is merely Aggieland Part II, as we have more Aggies in each class than from any other undergraduate school.

Though I am not privy to respond due to my not yet having matriculated, I think I will anyway. From what I've heard, UT-H kids are cooler. Way cooler. I'm personally hoping this is true

Seriously. Does that cause former Aggies to develop a complex, as they are now affiliated and entwined with that which they loathe and hate? Thank god I didn't go to A&M, I'm a sucker for a good complex

Well, seeing Peter Griffin's angst sort of brought back a lot of memories. I remember when I was just a tot during my MSI days thinking how sacrilege it was to be both an Aggie and Longhorn. This is a guy who was a Fishcamp counselor 3 years and was in every organization on campus of which one can think. But eventually you realize that at least one of the schools ought to win a bowl each year, and all that does is increase my odds of winning when I bet on them.

On interview day at UTH I asked the student panel who wins in intramurals with Baylor. I am sure you can guess what they said. One of them said, in jest, that it was "like beating up on the fat kid." Insensitive and offensive, but probably true nonetheless. Hope that helps.

Not really angst...just joking around. I am actually one of the least school spirited Aggies that you will meet. I liked A&M and I am glad that I went there, but I have no problems with UT (obviously since I picked all four UT med schools over A&M). But I will never root for UT over A&M and I can never consider myself a longhorn. Just because I am a part of the UT system now does not mean that I am in any way affiliated with the UT campus in Austin.

its true, we're super athletic with tons of former D-1 athletes.

not to mention really good looking 😉

I thought that the most students at UTH came from UT?

Gotta love the orange on the bumper sticker makes me feel all warm and fuzzy 🙂

To Socialist-

"Again, both schools are great and Baylor does have the name. If you want to do neurosurgery, urology or pediatrics, Baylor has more to offer (in my opinion)...."

Thanks so much for your insight. When you say neurosurgery, do you mean the surgical subspecialties in general? I will naively say that one of these, not necessarily neuro, is most likely for me.

It seems pretty evenly distributed in my class between A&M and UT...

I cant wait to play intramurals next year. After four long years of D1 intercollegiate swimming, I've recently had time to make up for lost seasons of intramurals. I'm fresh off a UT Austin intramural football championship.

I would also expect UTH dominance over TMC sports. However, a 4th year BCM student insisted to me that the tides are turning--Baylor won the flag football championship this year.

Does the school have IM Basketball? And if so, how big is it? (ie roughly how many teams? How competitive?). I'm no D-I athlete...**** I'm barely an elementary school athlete, but I love to play nonetheless!!

If anyone wants to start up some intramural ping pong, I'm up for it...maybe some intramural NCAA football 2005 on playstation 👍

UT doesn't currently have a neurosurgery residency, and I don't think the plans are in the work for one any time in the near future. It is always easier to match into a residency when your school has that residency. That said, the guy who went neurosurgery in my class matched (at Baylor). The urology program at Baylor is one of the strongest in the country. UT has a new urology chairman who is a completely awesome surgeon, but she is very young and new. Ortho is comparable at both, and I'd almost give an edge to UT (again, my opinion). I don't know much about ENT, so I don't have much to offer there. Again, don't let it be your primary criteria, but if both schools are equal on all other fronts, it is something to keep in mind.
