Just notied something... When I sent in my fsfa and my UT institutional application I forgot to fax in my application for scholarships... I think I'm going to drive it up to the office in the morning. Geez, how dumb am I.

Sorry, just needed to vent. I hope they will still take it, the deadline said feb 28th, but maybe if I smile real big 😀 I guess its worth a shot.

Anyone know if we need to send in or do anything else (aside form all the new stuff that just arrived in the ginormous packet), I don't really want to miss the boat again.

Was that for the scholarship in which you had to write an essay and get an additional recommendation? Or was it something else that I missed as well? I guess it is too late regardless eh?

Thats what I was confused about, I thought it was only necessary to fill it out if you were going for the one big scholarship which req. an extra letter and an essay, but apparently you have to fill out a scholarship application to be considered for any UT-H scholarship. Or at least that is what I currently understand, I may still be confused.

I believe the school hands out a good number of scholarships, aside from the one that requires an essay/recommendation. Some are need-based (for this you probably would have had to enter your parent's tax info in FAFSA) and I suppose the remainder are merit-based. Or maybe they just look at your picture on file and give you one if you're good looking.

I called yesterday to see if the financial aid office had received my application and they said they wouldn't know that yet b/c they don't even start entering data until the second week of March. You're probably safe to still send in the app.

Hmm ok Im confused too.....well I know I sent in that cursory form they sent with the info about the big scholarship....I just hope that was right. And I entered my parents expected tax info (adjusting from last year) on the fafsa cause I could really use some need based funds.

I think that you're right the way you understand it now... At least from what I understand, LOL.

I called the financial aid office and asked the lady if it was important to have my parent's info on fafsa to get need-based scholarships or grants or if it would be better to just send in my fafsa on time with my info only. She told me that I should just get my info in as soon as possible because the grants they give out are first come first serve. The problem was that my parent's haven't done their taxes and don't have a good idea of what they will be. My concern is that now i may miss out on some need based scholarships or grants. do anyone have any insight on this?

You can use your parents' tax info from last year as an estimate, unless something has occurred that has drastically changed their income. When completing FAFSA, check off the option that says "will file". Once they file, you can go back into FAFSA and revise the information.

What would you do if you were taking a class that you thought you needed for medical school and that wasn't on your list of classes you are "deficient" in?

I'd finish it, make a good grade, then send your updated transcripts to both TMDSAS and the school. It would be better to be safe than sorry. 🙂

Fo shizzle! Although I'm a little worried that I've run out of gas and micro might kick my ass here in a couple of hours.

Starts with L and has an ass in it

And now, i'm off to the LRC 👍

I don't think I've ever seen you around, lol. Then again, I'm not a big class go-er anyways.

Hope micro went well. 🙂

Their info has changed drastically, so it would be hard to guess. Will I be missing out on stuff though? It may be a little while before they can get their stuff together.

Has anyone used an apartment locating service? I found a few on the web with offers too good to be true really!? The rent is like $100-$200/month off from regular places. I'm not from the area so wasn't sure if there was a catch or not. They don't tell you the name of the places online, but I think if you call them they would.

Apartmentlady.com, apartmentwiz.com

I used one when I moved up to dallas this last summer and the lady helped a lot and I got $50 when I signed my lease. I am going to use the apartment locators metioned in our info packets. The lady was really fast at responding to me. I look at it this way .... they do all the ground work for you, they contact the places, find the specials and get you the best deals. If you don't want them to go with you, you don't have to take them or they can show you around. You don't have to pay them, so all you have to do is look at the places and pick one you like. They get paid by the apartment place where you sign.

Anyone checking out MidTown apartments??? I heard this was the place to live for yuppies at least?

So, I called TMDSAS today. My deficiency thingie did not include Calculus and I know I need it for UT-Houston. In fact, I am taking it right now and it is going just fine. *sigh of relief* They told me that I had 6 credits of it at my undergraduate institution. That is not true.. I had 6 credits of statistics and 3 of business calculus (oh, the irony). Anyway, I sent them my transcripts when I applied and none since. I have only taken 9 credit hours since and I didn't want to spend $10 more than necessary. When I called today I was yelled at for not sending my transcripts and to send them and an email with the info in their format (remember, class code, class name, semester taken, yada yada yada). I was told that my acceptance could be rescinded and I should have sent it before and that it was no small matter. Is that a threat or what?!?

So, if you haven't sent any recent transcripts, be sure to do it.

I think it was worse because the classes I took are all prerequisites for medical school. That is no reason to be rude or make threats though. I mean, I took the classes as needed and got all As.

What do you guys think?

I HIGHLY doubt any acceptances will be rescinded at this point. But, it is probably best to suck up the 10 bucks and keep everyone happy. I miscoded some of my grad school courses which led to me having a "deficiency" (interesting that undergrad courses will count toward the requirements but grad (more rigorous) courses will not....Anyway, after recoding my deficiency will be gone. Good luck to you neon

Definitely, $10 isn't worth the emotional grief. :luck:

so- i was under the assumption that after sending in trascripts for the application- that we did not have to send any other transcripts until we graduated. I don't want to send a transcript now and then send another when I complete my degree!!

That's my impression too. Perhaps they want transcripts now for people who are currently taking the required pre-reqs to make sure that they will have them completed before matriculation.

On this topic, you can now view what transcripts UTH has received by going to UTLink.

How do you sign into UTLink? The site prompted me with a username and pin. I have no idea! Thanks.

I'm just curious to others input....

When do you think is probably the latest that you could send in FAFSA/Institutional financial aid stuff and potentially get something?

I'm filling my taxes independently, but I have to have my parent's stuff for the FAFSA and have no idea when they will be done (April 15th at the latest I know! 🙄 )? I am just wondering if there will still be financial aid left if I get it in later on this month...

Any input would be nice! 🙂

I e-mailed tmdsas with this question:
"I sent in all my transcripts up until the point of application. It says I need to send in my fall grades but was wondering if I could hold off on that until after I've completed my degree- and then just send a final transcript- is that acceptable?"

Their response:
"No, if you follow the instructions on our website...you need to send in updated transcripts after EVERY semester that courses are taken. This is vitally important for us to maintain current and accurate records. The consequences could be having your acceptance put in jeopardy."

This is very comical- as UT houston specifically wanted your FINAL transcripts b/c they do not get their stuff from TMDSAS anymore. Hence the reason you have to send your final transcripts to BOTH tmdsas and UT houston. I think that tmdsas just wants you to send in semester transcripts so that they can validate and update your application as we move along- eliminating a lot of the blunt work during the summer. By threatening my acceptance- they very much confirmed this- a scare tactic........

I just wonder why TMDSAS still cares about getting our transcripts if the schools are no longer getting stuff from them.

Just getting us to the first page.....

Hey guys, as the senioritis is really biting hard lately I was thinking about dropping one of my classes. Its a non-science elective course (jazz appreciation) do you think UT Houston will care? This is not something they would rescind an acceptance over right? Sorry just paranoid. :scared:

The student ID number you need for UT link is on the mailing label of the big manilla packet UT sent to us. Your pin # is the last two digits of the year you were born in and the month you were born in.

ex: dec. 1981 = 8112

I checked it out and there is nothing posted on UT LInk yet. They said this is where we register for classes and pay bills but I guess we can't do this yet.
Also, is everyone up to date with all of their immunizations. I have old immunization records that show when I recieved certain vaccines, but it looks like they want very recent records of these, am I confused? I went up to the UT health center to get the first Hep B. and that cost me 60 bucks 🙁

gosh i always feel so bad when reading these posts...its great to be kept up on what I should be doing...but I just haven't been - immunization records, FAFSA, trying to log into UT Link... I was driving myself insane right up until I found out I got in here...but ever since I've put every last worry aside. am I the only one? 😕

P.S. is there a deadline to send in the welcome weekend form/money?

Thanks guys

For most of the state schools, May 1st is the deadline for turning in your FAFSA and being considered (priority) for financial aid. You can still get finaid after May 1st, but it will probably be substantially less. Also, the earlier you get in that FAFSA the better.

If you don't have your parent's stuff for the FAFSA, just ask them for estimates. If nothing dramatic has happened (stocks crashed, parent lost employment, etc.) ask them for last year's numbers and plug those in. The FAFSA only needs an estimate--it can be corrected later once you know the real numbers. JUST GET IT IN AS SOON AS YOU CAN! 😉 Good luck to you!

hey guys,

welcome to a great school! I got a kick out of reading all the worries you guys have, I guess I was like that 2 years ago too. To the people worried about changing/dropping credits, relax. One of my friends had not only a class messed up, but had his entire degree rescinded. Our school worked it out to where he got some shady online degree. And you know what? That was the end of it and no one is going to make an issue of it since he'll a have an MD anyway. It's kind of ironic for those of us that went to over-priced private schools, but hey. Also, I had to chuckle when I heard they're making someone take Calculus to get in. That's absurd, we haven't done any math past Algebra I since in two years, and its unlikely we will ever. I'm sorry about that, but if anyone out there hates math as much as me, you'll be glad to know that you're pretty much done with it. Anyway, I just thought I would offer congrats and consolations. If any of the incomings has any questions, I worked on Welcome Weekend, Retreat, and some admissions stuff in my first year, so I might be able to help. I'll be well into my third year rotations by the time you guys get here, but the class below mine is awesome as well, and filled with hotties(UT-Houston has the rightful reputation as being the school with the hottest girls). So get excited, and if you can, avoid all medicine-related activities until August. Trust me, you'll get your share.......

I was looking at the financial aid website and there was a list of things we needed to do. I was wondering, on the list there are some additional things that need to be sent, but these additional items are only for certain students. Does anyone know who these people are that should send this extra stuff in? I was just curious...I'll call tomorrow to find out for sure, but thought that someone else might of had this question and already had it answered.... 🙄

we were on the third page

We are still on second page (I let it slide because of Spring Break, but all the other UT schools were ahead of us 👎 . I can't have that.

Speaking of spring break... I'm so thrilled you have spring break in medical school. I graduated and when you are working spring break doesn't mean jack anymore. 🙂

Yeah it is rather depressing when everyone i know in school is off on a break and i have to go to work 🙁 I guess it is pay back for all the free nights I have this year because I work now. That won't be the case next year.

TRUE! It sucks even more when your girl teaches and has this week off chillin.....

I thought I remembered reading that they would ask you for the extra stuff, so I didn't send it in. Please post what you found out when you called.

Oh yeah, welcome weekend is less than a month away! Can't wait to meet everybody. I am planning on coming down from Connecticut (had a free ticket from frequent flyer miles, don't figure I'll be going anywhere else for the next few years).

I did call and they said that the SAR from the FAFSA would have indicated if I needed to send anything in.

Glad you're willing to make the trip from out-of-state. It sounds like we're going to have a great class. Going on vacation next week 😎 ...see y'all at welcome weekend!

Anyone know when welcome weekend money and form are due??

Bump from the 2nd page....

Do we have to pay for a welcome weekend ticket? The form only says "number of people attending" and that it is 35$ a person. Are we already paid for and do we only have to pay for our guest/s? Let me know if any of you guys have this figured out.

Thanks
And I cant wait to meet you all !!
