Some people did neuro at St.Luke's, and I hear it's great. You can do psych, neuro and surgery at MD Anderson.

Come on now....you know neuro can't be great no matter where you do it 😀

One of the great things about this school is the number of hospitals you rotate through.....Hermann, LBJ, Methodist, MD Anderson, HCPC, and maybe St. Lukes during third year. As a fourth year you can go to Texas Heart.

got my official packet today. it was a bit underwhelming.

What did you expect? A big, red box with a stripper that jumps out?

Well that's what mine had, but I don't think she survived the transit, so it wasn't a jump so much as a flop.

agreed - at least on SDN. the facebook group seems to have a lot of class of '09ers like myself; although folks right out of undergrad seems to be less and less common these days. even on the interview route i would say more people i met were on some sort of gap year than a senior in college still...

yay for welcome weekend March 27-29 (it's posted on facebook). are ya'll going?

MS ZERO TO HERO, BABY!

I'm pretty sure I am going. I will be in Houston anyways but I have no idea what I would be. Maybe spider-man haha.

Did you ever get yours working?

No, I haven't. But I saw this on the UTLink login page...

"Special Notices:

UTLINK will be unavailable after 7:00 p.m. Saturday Feb 21 for system maintenance. Availability will resume at 8:00 a.m. Sunday Feb 22."

Maybe they'll use that downtime to update login ID's... I dunno, just a thought. It's still February, so I'm not worried about it.

I don't think I'll be able to make that weekend, but I'll try. I'm sure my wife would like to see the school.

hhhmmmm... Still haven't received my packet in the mail, and I live 5 miles from the school. I got the e-mail from Ms. Sanders saying they want it returned by March 1st, hopefully I get it in time.

I spoke with the admissions office, and they said if you don't get your packet by tomorrow (2/20) to call them. They will put together another and send it again.

yeahhh.

I wish they'd verify that they received stuff.. still unsure if they ever got my scholarship application.

now I'm looking forward to orientation/white coat. had to buy myself a burnt orange tie for the occasion 🙂

Hey guys,
Does any one know how many classes we take at a time in Yr 1? Some schools do it One core class at a time, 8-12 most days so that we have time to study. Is that how UT Houston does it too? Any help appreciated...

From my impressions it seems that lectures are in the morning (8-12) and labs are in the afternoon (1-whenever you get out). I've also got the impression that most, if not all, lectures are recorded and archived online for you to view on your own time at your own pace.

Here's a schedule from last year 2008 Schedule for further reference.

Yep, that's pretty much how it is. To be honest, you're going to be bogged down first semester with anatomy lab, but fortunately you will only have to dissect every other lab period. That will allow for some studying in the afternoon. Your schedule will lighten up in the spring.

Thanks for the info Disarticulate!!

I'm not from Texas, but I interviewed at UTH and was way impressed with the school and with the TMC. I've got a lot of friends from Texas and would love to live there and go to UTH... I interviewed in December as an OOS applicant but have yet to hear anything. I realize my chances are slim being out of state, but does anybody know when I can expect to hear something?

I think they will put together a waitlist sometime in the next month or so? and then I bet there will be some movement coming around May 15. I'm not sure on a lot of that, though, but you might could call and get some better info.

Good luck!

Hola all,

Does anyone know when we are eligible for health insurance through UT Houston as incoming students?

I'm super excited about starting school (and putting in my last day for my current job) but don't want to be left un-health-insured for too long.

Thanks!

I'm honestly not sure but here's the website regarding the student insurance: http://med.uth.tmc.edu/students-current/student-health-ins.htm including the phone number to Auxiliary Enterprises, which is the part of UTH that handles insurance matters. Your best bet would be to call them. Good luck!

I just called them, because I'm in the exact same scenario as you. They said that your coverage doesn't start until the beginning of the semester. Bummer. I've actually already told my employer that I'm quitting in May to go be a camp counselor this summer. It will cost somewhere around $400/mo. to extend my current insurance beyond employment. The camp I'll be working at obviously does not provide benefits.... so I guess it's Ben Taub or LBJ for me if I get sick or hurt. D'OH!!!

Look into COBRA. There is a grace period to pay the premium, so if your gap is less than the grace period, you don't really need to do anything. The coverage through COBRA does suck though.

Also if your gap in insurance is more than a certain amount of time, your UT insurence will have a 12 month waiting period for pre-existing conditions.

Get the phone number from student services for the plan administrators for more details or a copy of the policy.

That is, actually, exactly what I had planned on doing. It seems a little dishonest, but I think I'll get over it.

I might be mistaken, but I think COBRA ensures that I receive the same coverage.... just that I have to pay the full cost of the premium instead of my employer eating most of it. Not sure though.

If they didn't want that loophole there they wouldn't have written it there.

Do any of the current students have any insight on laptop requirements?

I found this here: http://med.uth.tmc.edu/msit/policy/students.html

But, I was just wondering how strictly this is enforced and whether this minimum configuration is actually needed.

I was thinking of getting something lower powered and smaller, like a netbook.

Thanks!

laptops are not currently strictly enforced...people have a wide variety, including people with macs, some running windows os...so i would not worry about following the guidelines...the only class that does have a laptop requirement is neuroscience as a part of the class is a lab on a software program that i believe only runs on windows (but don't quote me), but even people without laptops managed to find a school computer in the lab that is used for the class to do the lab...other than that class pretty much all you need in a computer is something that can get on the internet...that's my $0.02...

Sweet, thanks.
if you get a mac, you must be able to run windows in addition to mac os. neurolab has to run on windows and there may some others.

Yeah, that vpad application will not work on Mac OS but that's not a big deal. It's hardly ever used in lecture and it's not like it's mandatory to participate.

so, those of you MS0s or current students going to welcome weekend -- are you definitely dressing up in theme?!

why does it cost money to go to welcome weekend? I've never heard of this at any other school!

Here here to the "why does welcome weekend cost money" question!

I'm hoping it'll be going toward some delicious food. Otherwise, it makes no sense.

(I'm not dressing up as a super hero.)

I was going to wear dark slacks, suspenders, and a thin white business shirt with a superman t-shirt underneath... but I failed to recognize that weekend is the same as my cousins wedding in Austin. So I guess I'll see you guys in August.

Can someone tell me why UTLink does not tell me anything at all??? It would be nice to know that my financial aid application is being worked on, etc.

Hey guys, what're ya'all doing with your summer before school starts? I have approx. 3 months and it almost seems sinful to just lay around and chill..lol. Any thots?

-I'm quitting my job in early May, and then I plan on going up to Austin for a couple weeks and participating is some final acts of debauchery.

-In late May, I'm going to Maui for a week. (Orbitz has some amazing deals enter promo code ENTERTAIN200 for an extra $200 off.)

-Starting June 1st I'm going to be a summer camp counselor at a really nice camp off of Lake Livingston. It's something I've always wanted to do, and it seems like a pretty fun way to spend the last summer of my life.

-Then in early August me and some friends are renting a house in New Braunfels to polute the guadalupe with excessive amounts of EtOH. It will probably be my last hoorah.

👍Here's to cirrhosis and sunburns at the White Coat Ceremony!👍

Well at least you can log onto UTlink, my username/password still don't work haha. I've got about a month off and wish I had some more.

Do something fun. Read some books. Play some video games. Visit friends or family. Travel. Drink. Sleep in every day if that's your thing. Whatever it takes.

UTLink is for registering for classes, ordering transcripts, and paying your tuition. I don't think anything related to applying for financial aid would should up on there. Unfortunately, UTH is not the most tech-saavy school with regards to this stuff.

Wait until June. UTLink will display info about your financial aid package. You can also go to UTLink to check your official grades, which you obviously don't have any yet. 🙂 UTLink is also important for paying tuition and changing your home address. So yeah, a lot of this stuff doesn't apply to you just yet so don't worry.

Hey Everyone!!

I'm new to SDN and just wanted to say hi to all my future classmates.

I was wondering if there are specific places/areas that students tend to live or future students are intending to live. thanks!

Hey guys
Does anyone know if it is a good idea to purchase UT Houston's insurance?? I tried accessing the "Auxiliary Enterprise Office" but the link does not work. Where can one find details of the insurance coverage? Thanks in advance....

It seems like a good majority of students tend to live south of the medical school. That's where the the student housing is and tons of students live there. There's an apartment complex south of the school called Lanesborough and a good number of students live there because it's along the rail, which makes for easy transportation. Also south of the school are lots of condos. There are also some more apartment complexes like Archstone and Greenbriar that are relatively popular, which are also south. Some people live in the museum district, which is north of the school. Everyone else is just scattered around.

Hey yall,

Just got my acceptance yesterday by email. Can't wait to join everyone in Houston. What's everyone doing for housing?

Just got my acceptance email last night. Houston is my top choice so it is good to have some closure to this whole application process fiasco. I look forward to meeting everyone in August.
