UT Memphis for Fall 2004

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Are any of you guys having trouble with the AAMC MSQ survey? I keep filling out the registration and the damn thing still keeps giving me an invalid login prompt....suggestions?

Vandypatty,

Mine worked ok, except I forgot my id & password. I know that it is caps sensitive- ? maybe that is why it is not registering? Good luck!
ps- when you all completed it, did you consent for the school to id your personal data?

Thesis is almost done...planning to have the complete draft finished tonight (and I mean it this time...no really, I do)...I will still have revisions, but I'll be handing it off to the committee tomorrow. Thanks for asking.

It's going to get hot here this week!

Oh...I meant to say - for you folks on the waitlist, our official acceptance of offer/rejection/defer a year letters are due at the end of this week (I think). I suppose it's possible that there might be a few more spots opening up. Anyway, best wishes!!

Since classes will start in a month or so, I'm just wondering if anyone has received the promissory note from their lenders yet. I'm getting a little anxious here.

Nope...nothing here yet. I've heard of people getting accepted as late as, well beginning of classes. In cases such as that, or even people coming off the waitlist mid-summer, do they arrange financial aid by the payment deadline, or do they offer some sort of deferral? I imagine that everything will work out soon enough.

I'd just like to get my hands on some cash so I can get everything in order before classes start. I don't want to be out shopping for computer stuff, bookcases, etc. and arranging an "office" after classes start

I won't even get my financial aid packet until the end of next week.

I've already sent off my master promissory note; did so about a week ago. Still no cash, though.

P.S., Asc, send me the dimensions of your "study" and I'll build you some badass bookshelves. My last day at J.'s is tomorrow!

Hey, congrats! You're a free man for a few months. On the other hand, I'm now an indentured servant to my dad. I'm building him a carport...we're talkin' the real deal here too. It'll give me a little employment and will save him several grand on the thing.

For all of you who aren't in the know, funkless gave up a lucrative career as a cabinet maker to enter medical school. I suppose he felt less likely to lose a finger during a prostate exam than ripping boards with a table saw. Really, though, he built an awesome desk with drawers and a nice set of bookshelves out of red oak...pretty sweet.

I'm actually finishing up some bookshelves myself...8'x12' built-ins with a gas fireplace. The room was an old screened-in porch that had been enclosed (no windows). I tore out the East and West walls and put in wall-to-wall windows more than 6' tall and a glass french door that may, someday, lead out to a back porch. The North wall has the wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling bookcase with the fireplace in it. the wall opposite the bookcase and fireplace adjoins the living room, where I busted out the old door and put in an 8' wide french door, so the library/sun room is open to the living room.

My bookcases are birch plywood though, not oak. :(

The rest of the house is a dump, though. I need to get some cash in the bank so I can finish up these prokects, get the house cleaned, and have everybody over (especially Mr. and Mrs. Funkless).

oh...I got my promisory note yesterday and will send it off tomorrow. I think funds are dispersed through the school, so we'll probably all get our cash at the same time, no? ...perhaps around orientation?

...less than a month, folks

I figure that we'll all get the $ at the same time, in that the bursar will mount the tire well of a loaded down pickup truck and toss out bundled $100 bills into the frenzied masses, like tossing loaves of bread in a Mogadishu marketplace.

This will happen during orientation, I imagine. It has to happen pretty early in the week, so that we have time to run and purchase our computers, right?

--Funkless

P.S. Free carport labor is a phone call away.

I called yesteday...we collect our dough during the first week of classes. Booo! I say...

I hope to get down to bidness building this carport within a few days...maybe next week. I probably won't need much help at the beginning, but some hands will certainly come in handy when I start the framing. :D

Hey guys,
I was sent my financial aid stuff yesterday. As of right now, I plan on living at my mom's home during medical school. I won't have to pay for rent, but I guess, in exchange, I could take over my own car note or something. I hate the fact that my mom works her butt off and pays money just so I can drive. My question is, do you think I need $38,500 for this year if I will be living at home and will not have many expenses? I don't think I should take out loans as an M1 if I don't need it. Just your thoughts on this matter please. I do not plan on having my mom give or spend much money on me at all. She does not need to be supporting me anymore. She has worked her whole life to make sure her children could get an education. She has already sacrificed enough for me (and I really do mean sacrificed). Anyway, just any advice would be welcome. I may just go ahead and accept all the money they offered me. I just don't know how much I'll need because I will at least live at home for a semester. If that's too hard on me commute-wise, then I'll find a place closer.
Thanks,
ravaha08

For those of you looking for furniture - desks, bookshelves, etc. The Memphis City Schools has a warehouse somewhere with surplus furniture. I bought some oak bookshelves there for $10 a piece. A friend bought an awesome, heavy-duty drafting table there once for about $30. It's really hit-or-miss...sometimes they have nothing more than little metal chairs, but it might be worth checking out. A kindergaardener's desk might make a cool end table. Look them up in the blue pages. It might take some looking, it's a pretty well-kept secret.

Ravaha -
My advice would depend upon the type of loan you receive. I really wouldn't hesitate to take subsidized stafford loans, but I might not want to take out unsubsidized loans, and I certainly wouldn't take private loans unless it were essential. You won't accrue any interest on the subsidized loans, so you could pay back what you don't use without any penalty. With subsidized loans, you will pay a little interest, so it's better to budget wisely beforehand.
When you say that you won't have many expenses, do you mean that you won't or your mom won't? You'll still be occupying space, using water and electricity, and eating food. You might consider paying your mom some "rent". If my wife heads away to law school next year, I'll probably move in with my parents for a semester or two, but I'll pay them some each month.
You might also consider paying your car off since we receive our funds in a lump sum...a car is a legitimate medical school expense. You'll save yourself the interest of paying a monthly note.
...just some thoughts. :)

I thought about some of those things, but my mom's the type of person who will not let me give her money. Also, she wouldn't want me to take out a loan for no reason. And I don't want to take unsubsidized money that I don't need as an M1. So it's not a good idea to let it roll over. As for the car note, it's at 0% interest (you know all those sweet 0% deals 2 years ago). I thought about paying it off, but I am better off making the payments which are really small than paying it off. The reason I don't know what I should do is that my boyfriend is going to law school this year and will owe nearly 150 grand afterwards. If I take the full loan, I will owe nearly that too. That's 300 thousand between us. I guess I should really be consulting him since we will be the ones paying it off in the future. I just wanna send the form back, but have no idea how much I should take. I will cut at least a few thousand off because my brother bought me a laptop already. I am so confused!

Well, my wife and I just moved into our new Memphis apartment. Now Just spend the rest of the summer hanging out. Did anyone else get the BBQ invitation for the Memphis Medical Society?

Matt

I don't know if this makes any difference to anyone, but my pops has been a physician in memphis for about 30 years, and he knows his way around the hospitals, if anyone needs any help with anything, PM me and I can get him to call you.

I was looking at our entering class, and by my calculations there are at least 60 people that have been offered acceptances off the waitlist. I am assuming that is a pretty good chunk of people for all those still waiting. Does anyone know how many people have actually been offered positions off the waitlist?

Whoopeee!!! I am finally here!!
I moved down last Friday and am living out on Mud Island. Ok, no turning back now!! I have signed a 12 month lease, so here's to not getting booted out before the end of 1st year!!

I had to come over to the UT library since I have no internet access at home just yet. I am spending my days exploring the city and may even head over to the zoo tomorrow. Is it any good? I may also try to check out the art show, Masters of Florence (?), but I am not quite sure where it is showing. I need to get a paper.

I would love to hear about good, cheap local eats!! I already found the WalMart in Arkansas. Not bad, except for the produce!

How is everyone else doing? Are you all getting ready?!?!? I have to get a few more immunizations before this whole thing gets underway. If anyone would like to get together, pls. let me know via PM or something. I am heading back up to Nashvegas for the weekend until next Wednesday, but after that, Memphis will be home, sweet home!!!

Take care all!!! Finish up all that work (thesis, etc.) and RELAX!!!

Masters of Florence is at the Pyramid. I haven't been yet, but because I am from this area, I tend not to do much here. Also, I live kinda far from downtown. Anyway, there is a Schnuck's (sp?) on Union Ave for groceries. It's across the street from a big presbyterian church. I think it's near Union and McLean or Avalon. There is a Kroger down Poplar somewhere. Don't go to the one on Poplar and Cleveland, though. There is a decent vietnamese restaurant on Cleveland. There's a IHOP, Applebee's, and several other restaurants down Union not far from that Schnuck's. There is also a good Indian Place called India Palace down Poplar. it's near the circuit playhouse I believe. I have lived here all my life, but I didn't come downtown too much so I know the G-town, Bartlett, Raleigh, Cordova, and Millington areas much better.

Has anyone else looked at the 2004-2005 Calender that WolfpakRed posted?
It looks as if we will have an exam week every 6 weeks.

Has the administration done away with the exams every 2 weeks crap they started during the middle of last year? If so, I am VERY happy!

6 weeks requires a lot of fact retention...

so i guess since everyone will be rolling in by the end of next week - maybe we can round up all the SDNers and have a 'last supper'/night out next weekend...

Hello everyone! My wife and I just got settled in to our new apartment here in town! I'm finally getting on-line after about a week. I would love to get together with some people before we get started. It is much better to meet people in a relaxed setting versus one where everyone is worried about figuring everything out. If anyone is up for a beer or some dinner or anything else for that matter PM me and we'll see what we can make happen. I hope everyone has a nice and relaxing week and a half! If I don't see you before, I'll see you on the 9th.

Hey everybody!
so, we're in class T and TH from 8:00AM to 2:00PM with no break? I guess I'll be writing with one hand and stuffing my face with the other. (assuming I keep going to class).

Irish Rose - the Memphis zoo is great...sure, San Diego, Cincinatti, and St. Louis have better ones, but we got the Pandas, and that's a huge deal. When I was a kid, the place was pretty much a bunch of concrete pits with animals pacing around inside of them... One day, mom and I were watching the hippopotami, who sit in a pool with their mouths open for food. This redneck walked up and threw the contents of a whole pack of Redman chewing tobacco into the mouth of one of them and proclaimed, "that sucker oughta burn!" After a few minitues, the poor hippopotamus went under the water and began making bubbles. Welcome to Memphis!

Cheap places to eat downtown? I'm not sure how cheap is cheap, but.... Sawaddi is a really good, reasonably priced Thai place close to the Peabody. Buckley's next door is a prime steak place and a really good deal, though not cheap. Huey's is a classic Memphis place...they're always voted best burger, though I really don't think they deserve it. These are all on Union close to the Peabody.

You gotta try the Cozy Corner on N. Parkway...the place looks like a dive, but it's packed with Morgan Keegan executives; they serve BBQ, grilled balogna, etc...stuff you shouldn't eat daily.

There's a great sandwich/wrap/etc. shop at the corner of Madison and Main - Stella's maybe? Anyway, if Stella's is a different place, it's good too, though more expensive...the restaurant I'm thinking of is just down main from the sandwich shop.

I highly recommend Empire coffee!! It's at the opposite corner of main and madison from the sandwich place. They have great salads and sandwiches. The place is owned and run by a really cool guy, who I think made his money elsewhere, got out of the business and decided to open up a coffee shop. he bought a place that was known as the maproom, a local haunt. You should atleast go in there and check out the ceiling.

Fat City Beignets is adjacent to the Peabody place; the owner is in his 30's, from Louisianna, and has a PhD in psychology. Like John of Empire coffee, he got tired of psychology and decided to open a restaurant. He goes down to New Orleans frequently to get bread from his favorite bakery to make his sandwiches. The muffaletta is good, though fattening and large.

Court square deli is pretty good, and quite cheap. It's (guess what) in court square. There's also Frontstreet deli on (guess what) front street. I haven't eaten there in a long time; it got a little expensive after it was featured in the movie, "The Firm." There's also a Bogie's downtown...they have locations in East Memphis and in overton square; they're probably the best known local deli. There's a Lenny's subshop across from Confederate Park (where the trees are actually urinals for vagrants).

There's a Spaghetti Warehouse if you keep going south on Front.

McEwens is also downtown; it's one of Memphis' best restaurants. Expect to shell out bucks if you go there for dinner (but not Chez Phillipe of the Peabody kind of bucks); I hear they have great lunches and a more reasonably priced lunch menu...it'll probably be about $12 for a lunch entree or salad...not too bad.

Sleep out Louie's is on Poplar; I think they will close soon. It's another Memphis classic. They serve your everyday pubfood...burgers, sandwiches, etc. It's a gorgeous building; Andre Agassi like to eat there when he came to Memphis.

Places that will suprise you: Sean's 7/11 it's on Union not far West from the big Presbyterian church (Idlewild Pres) and Schnucks mentioned by ravaha. It's run big Greeks...they have good, authentic greek salads and souvlaki, etc. You'll see a lot of medical center people there. There's another convenient store deli on Madison just west of Overton square. It's right next to Harry's En Teur (which is another decent place). This deli has a habanero hot sauce that I'm rather partial to on some of their sandwiches. Sade's deli on Poplar and Century (west of Highland and the nearby Starbucks) is a fantastic place to eat. It's run by a family...the dad runs the register and has a fantastic selection of imported beer while Sade makes the sandwiches, falafel, gyros, etc. The son and daughter are usually helping out there in the summer (Sade's daughter is gorgeous, to boot). This has to be one of my favorite places in Memphis.

Lotus on Summer Ave, just east of Perkins, gets my vote for best oriental food. The Lemongrass chicken is awesome.

okay...I just had a few spare minutes to drivel off some info...gotta head off to a meeting.

Okay future doctors...I just got back from a Caribbean vacation and have paid the price with sun poisoining. Aside from going to see a doc (I feel no need to do that ever again...as misguided as it is, plus I leave for Memphis tomorrow), what in the hell can I do to insure that I get more that three hours of sleep a night. Hydrocortisone is not doing the trick and sleeping pills only make me crankier that I can't go back to sleep. Help me smart ones. I'll be the beat red guy in the back row.

Oh, and looking forward to meeting you guys. Is anyone planning on this AMA BBQ?

Orientation Schedule is up:

http://www.utmem.edu/com_admissions/ORIENTATION_ACTIVITIES.pdf

also... i think we should all do something next weekend. dinner or casino trip or something before we become social hermits. i'll be in the new apt on mud island and worse comes to worse people can bring drinks and come hang out. i've got a nice 5' front projection tv..

Hey all- I think a get together next weekend would be great.

What about on Sat. night?? If someone local can pick a place (pls. provide directions) and name the time, I would def. be interested!

Also- has anyone used T Mobile in Memphis? Or have good info on service quality etc.?

I am with Sprint, but I can't get reception in the apt. so I am going to ditch it. Right now I am trying to compare T Mobile & Verizon, but I am open to suggestions too.

I am trying to stay under $40/month (excluding taxes etc.), but I need nationwide long distance & good service between Memphis & Nashville.

Thanks you all!! Take care!!

Next weekend sounds good to me.

well since we've got a week - i'll throw out some suggestions... (since I live downtown, I'm going with downtown places...)... i guess everyone just cast a vote or give a suggestion..

(1) Gordon Biersch - Restaurant/Brewery - menu's online under the Memphis location - ~$10-15 for a good dinner. Location: Corner of Main and Peabody (behind the Gayaso Apts, next to Bank of America)

(2) Gus's - Voted Best Fried Chicken by USA Today - really good, just not very classy looking and maybe not the best sit down and hang out environment. Location: S Front St and Pontotoc (i think)

(3) Automatic Slim's - Chef's Twist on Classic Foods - maybe not the best of places for picky eaters. But if you've got the guts to try new things with classic foods (ex - jerk flavored hamburgers), then this place is awesome. Location: 2nd Street (across from the Peabody Hotel)

(4) Rendezvous/Pig on Beale/Neely's - BBQ
- Rendezvous - Memphis style (dry rub) - not all that great in my opinion.
Location: In an alley off Union between 2nd and 3rd
- Pig on Beale - Better BBQ (in my opinion) - right on Beale St (next to Silky's)
- Neely's - good BBQ, also have some of the other items like BBQ Nachos and BBQ Spaghetti - located off of Jefferson Ave (near Danny Thomas)

(5) Huey's - Classic Burger Place - Location - all over Memphis including 2nd St (maybe not the best to get a group accessible parking)

(6) Memphis Pizza Cafe - location: Overton Square on Madison Ave (across from Studio on The Square - movie theatre)

(7) Bosco's - Restaurant/Brewery - real good food, maybe a little bit more expensive/classy than the others, but not formal by any means. Location: 2120 Madison Ave (Overton Square)

(8) The Bayou (not 100% on the name) - Cajun Food - Good outdoor dining - Overton Square

there are some suggestions - my vote would be for Bosco's or Gordon Biersch. Bosco's might have better parking options, but there's always free off-street parking downtown if you don't mind walking a block or two

I'm in for a get-together as well....My vote is for Gordon-Biersh or Flying Saucer, because I'm living right above these. (Gayoso) Can't wait!

My ( :scared: ) mother-in-law is coming this weekend, but I'm sure I can sneak away for a meet/greet. My vote goes to Bosco's, but I'm down for anything.

--Funkless

if anyone is interested - Egghead and I are going out to the Flying Saucer after work to hang out, maybe grab some food - about 5 or 6ish?. we can also go over to st jude and i can play tour guide barbie if anyone is interested in looking around.... just e-mail me [email protected]

all right, time for St Jude and my final week of work before eden's demise next week....

- David

mmm....I was going to suggest Bosco's too. I think they just built a patio, so we might be able to eat out there if the weather stays nice. I hope to be able to come...I might show up late.

Thesis is done folks! I'm just waiting for my major prof. to call me today to schedule a date to defend later this week...and No! you're not invited. (assuming you want to hear about cyanobacterial motility organelles). It's looking like I'll probably be able to matriculate with you folks, bless your hearts. :luck:

So, do I need to go out and get anything now? A palm pilot or stethoscope for PLC/DRS or anything? I guess they'll tell us all of this stuff during orientation.

Bosco's sounds really good... We have one up here too. They seem to have very good food.

Congrats on the thesis Asclepius!! Way to go!

I went ahead & bought my Palm yesterday. I figure it will be nice to get to play with it this week before school since I have not had one before. If you all are interested OfficeMax has the Palm Tungsten E for $199, which is the reg. price, but then they offer a $40 rebate. This is $30 cheaper than anyone else we found.

It is a really nice medium level model with a color screen, 32mB memory, basically more than what the requirements were, but still very affordable.

Anyone have any thoughts on my dilemma to pick Verizon or T Mobile for cell phone?
Just curious

Hope everyone has a great week!!

I would love to join you guys at Bosco's. I've only been there once but it was pretty darn good food.

I decided to wait on the palm. I had a few doctors and current students who told me it probably is not necessary first year. I hope they are right.

sounds more and more like Bosco's on Saturday evening - does 6:30 - 7ish work (or maybe earlier if we have a big group, service might take a lot longer)? i also need an estimate on how many people will be (or at least plan on being) there - so i can call them later this week.... weather.com says it should be 85 and sunny Sat. (maybe a little too early for the forecast) - but patio seating good with everyone if the weather holds?

Hey if anyone is up for an adventurous outing, I think I'm gonna run and play some paintball this Saturday if anyone is interested. You don't need to have played before (though it does help) and they've got everything you'd need. If this sounds like fun to anyone, don't be shy to speak up. There's nothing quite like getting to know your fellow classmates by shooting them with a high powered automatic weapon. :) Here's the field's website: www.memphispaintball.com

If not than you can see the bruises at dinner and get you pumped up about next time.

vandypatty - that sounds like a really fun idea. I've been to that place; it's really good. There are a whole bunch of paintball commando nerds that hang out there, so be careful.

Does anybody here play frisbee golf? There's a really fun disk golf course over at Shelby Forest. Shelby Forest or Meemam State Park is different from Shelby Farms off Walnut Grove; it's much bigger and a little bit of a drive north of Memphis. A little disk golf might be a fun outting when we're encumbered by leisure time soon. ;)

Unfortunately, I dropped a 12 foot long 2x12 on my foot today and had to drill some holes in my toenail to relieve the blister forming underneath it. I probably won't be up for anything adventurous for some time. :(

Ouch...that doesn't sound good at all. Hope you feel better soon. I've never played frisbee golf and I generally can't throw a frisbee very well but I'm up for trying something new...and to be honest I am bored out of my mind and am counting the days until orientation starts. If anybody also plays real golf and knows of a good local course, I'd be up for that as well.

a couple of us are going to north creek thursday (maybe 1 or 2ish) to golf

I disc golf... that course is pretty nice - really long holes. I don't like how you're suppose to pay to park - there's nothing out there. I just wish there were some more courses in this area...

WolfpackRed said:

there's another course at shelby farms, though the holes or traps really aren't very good, and it's difficult to tell where the course lies or which hole is next.

I haven't played Galloway since it was renovated a few years ago; it looks great now for a public course (in Memphis). Davy Crocket was my favorite public course when I played more. It's in North Memphis and is a little more hilly than other courses in the city. It's also in a bad neighborhood and has a big fence built all the way around it. Evidently, a guy was shot playing golf there a few years ago, but the bullet struck a ball in his breast pocket, saving his life. Supposedly, Titleist or whoever it was had him on a few commercials etc. ...granted, this may just be an urban legend.

Hello!!

I've been reading this tread, and would like to say hi to everybody. I'm moving down to Memphis tomorrow, and look forward to meeting you all. I think I've got all of the miles of paperwork and stuff done and look forward to starting up Monday. I'd be interested in joining you for dinner saturday night, if you don't mind a rookie poster tagging along. Does the school want us to buy a Palm for first year classes? I wouldn't think you'd need it until rotations, I guess they'll tell us that stuff next week.

UT-Memphis, Medicine

I'd definitely rather not be shot, but I'd also love to get out and play some. I'm down for whatever you guys decide. I'd love to join up and hit a few.

I'm also holding off on the palm until probably third year unless they inform us it's a necessity. I'm sure the technology will have evolved a lot by then too, so I'd rather not buy something that's going to be out of date when I need it.

You guys are cracking me up with all this "maleness" - paintball, construction injuries, ... just kidding!!!!!

I hope your foot gets better soon Asclepius... it would be awful if you had to limp to get that white coat!

How is your sunburn Vandypatty? I have heard lots of home remedies for sun burn/ sun poisoning, but I am not sure how truly helpful they are.

I am more interested in getting back into running and perhaps training for a mini Triathlon... would anyone else be interested in setting up a training group?

I wish I knew how to golf... I have tried to hit a ball a couple of times, but I can't seem to keep my head down- I keep pulling up on the swing...

How are the school's recreation facilities? Has anyone checked them out?

I need a left handed person to help me golf. I've hit balls in a driving range a few times, but that's the extent of my golfing. I think disc golf would be fun, but I've never played. Maybe, I'll do plenty of new stuff in med school (that's assuming I somehow find time).
