Is he in the dental school?

So, I have learned that at UTHSCSA, even if you are recommended for an interview does not mean you will get one. I would really like to know how the hell things are done and who sets the vocabulary of the process.

That really sucks!!! Sorry to hear that Trauma_Junky.

But you did get an interview at A&M and I am sure you rocked on it!!!!

trauma_junky ugh, sorry to hear that. But you got two interviews and you only need to get one admittance! I am sure you did great.

megafolyia Dr. Johnson is a she and she runs the gross anatomy course. She is a phenomenal teacher and one of the absolute nicest people I have ever met. (Right next to Dr. King who runs the microanatomy course)

The faculty is one of the strongest things about UTHSCSA. I count many of them friends. Some of them very close friends.

And the rotations at BAMC? Amazing beyond words.

Has anyone mentioned that they have a lousy gym at UTHSCSA and that it's not even in the medical school -- it's in the dental school. 😱

Has anyone mentioned that sometimes people have to sit on the floor during exams !?!?!

Yes, please only post HORRIBLE things about San Antonio...no one in their right mind would want to go there.

PS- Any one planning on going to Bombay's tonight? I'll be there, and as Roja has stated, no one on the admissions committee is present.

megafolyio indeed the gym is rather small, and over by the dental cafeteria. (which for about 6 mos was really good, and now sucks). However, many of the apts around the area have their own sucky gyms. And Raqcuetball and Fitness gives a large discount to the HSC people.

YOu really don't want to work out at school anyway. run on the track maybe, play softball, maybe... but do you really want people seeing you grunt and lift heavy objects?

STAC Indeed, there should be no one from the admissions comittee (including the 4th years that interview). If there are, it is a serious breech of what the night was designed for. and you should let me know so I can pass it on to dr.j

It's a fun night for all around. I am glad that it has found its way back to Bombay. Much more comfortable.

I will keep those of you interviewing on monday in my thoughts.

just a few random observations.....

'tis true, Dr. Johnson IS one of the nicest people you'll ever meet, along with Dr. King. Both seem to go out of their way to make the transition from non-MS to MS1 go as smoothly as possible. Now, if we could just do something about her fixation with Embryology we'd all be better off!

school gym sucks....true, but there are other gyms in the area. BTW Fitness Connection got bought out by Gold's Gym but they still honor old contracts and prices. But hey, who has time to go to the gym anyways?

third.....you just can't beat December weather in San Antonio...it's 60 degrees right now, and i'm studying for Medical Microanatomy and soaking up some sunshine out on the balcony. Sorry Roja, and yeah, i just read about that awful snowstorm up East...😎

good luck with the ranking o' the schools everyone!

I said only horrible info on San Antonio...please!!!!

(Come on man! I've got a good thing going on here...stop messing it up!!!)😉

I got on to see if anyone was planning on going...I think its till 9pm..suggestions?

KevinF911 Tis true. The only thing that would make Dr. Johnson better was if she would just stop obsessing about that embryology stuff. But at least she is compassionate to those of us that just don't get it. But I loved her so much I was a ta for gross for 2 blocks my fourth year. Well, her and Dr. Richards.

And Dr. King absolutely kicks total rear. He was my advisor and is a close friend. I adore him. There are not enough amazing words to describe him.

Same for Dr. J. He is totally the nicest person. Absolutely. Just dont' tell him that MCAT prep courses are necessary. *g*

Yes, its cold here in NYC. But its still an amazing place to live. And my residency program is along the same personality as UTHSCSA so thats nice.

everyone else I hope that Bombay went well tonight.

I can say nothing bad about san antonio! Its my alma mater and I intend to come back and teach there... so sorry, no bad words from me.

Roja

I saw that you are a resident in the ER. I am condsidering either ER or pediatrics. How do you like it? What are the pros and cons?

I absolutely love being in the ER. I did not even remotely think about it during the majority of my medical school experience. I was intent on doing Pediatric Rhuem. And then I did peds. And did NOT like it at all. It just didn't end up being for me.

I had limited exposure to the ED in my first 3 years. I had fun on trauma surgery (at the time at SA there was no ER rotation third year) but knew I wasn't going surg.

During my last rotations (IM) a friend was rotating with me. We were bored and he was planning on doing EM. I talked to him about it, started getting interested. He introduced me to some of the attendings and then I did a rotation at BAMC. And absolutely loved it.

It appealed to me on many many levels adn I have been happy ever since.

If you want some more info, feel free to ask...

well i just got back to Atlanta from my day in San Antonio - all i can say is wow. i was very pleasantly surprised by UTHSCSA (it's not UTSA 😳) and the unbelievable amount of clinical opportunities they have. it was very cool getting to hang out with lilstina and meet STAC - knowing someone always makes the whole day a little easier 😉

that said, i have a tough choice ahead of me. UTHSCSA definitely jumped a couple spots on my list. i'm gonna post a novel in the interview review section so i'll go into more detail there.

I really liked UTHSCSA as well... and why am I not surprised that lane already posted? 😉

Hope you had a good flight! I got lost on my drive back and nearly fell asleep... 😳

Congratulations on the SA interviews, guys. Hope you had a good time. 😀

lane As a UTHSCSA grad, I must applaud you for not calling it UTSA. And I am of course, not surprised you liked it. *g* The clinical experience and professional training you get is outstanding and will stead you will during residency and beyond.

lilstina Congrats!

giving my .02 Feel free to email/PM me anytime. I *love* what I do so don't mind talking about it.

ok, come on now, UTHSCSA is just too damn long! we abreviate to ut-houston (UTHSC-houston) and you can do it too!

😛

seaworthc Nope, UTHSCSA is *not* UTSA. ever. We just pronounced it 'U-tusca' Nice and short. No need to confuse it with UTSA.

I know! I know! It was a 'i've had no sleep and I'm trying to make a funny' moment. Hence the smiley.

Perhaps the inability to compose humorous comments will improve if I drink more coffee.. *g*

Hell no. I always thought it sounded like some prehistoric shaggy animal.... *g* Most people just have a confused look on thier face when I even mention Texas. (Well, there is one person here who is from san antonio and went to med school in at UT- houston. we root for the Spurs together)

To many NYC-ers texas is a far away scary land.

I get a lot of.. 'I've heard Austin is nice' with a fearful look in their eyes.
