they used my leg on the final practical, thank you very much! that was the best looking popliteus muscle you'll ever see 😡

When I first read this it sounded like they actually used YOUR leg for the practical. That sounded like an interesting approach to anatomy.

well we had a dog for undergrad and I thought everything was really cool, so I am VERY excited about seeing it in human form. So no AD I don't think you're a dork...but if you are, so am I 🙂

HAHA! Hope you had fun!

Yup, just take a look at some of the silly threads on here. Although, I do think you should keep the one about PsychoDoc and GuyLaroche open...hehe

BUMP! Happy Friday everyone!

Hiya AggieGal!

*waves*

I'm feeling good. It's Friday!! I've got sooooo much sleep to catch up on this weekend....

I was in SA this weekend checking out some places to live and received my Texas drivers license. Big step for sure. Carlyle Place was very nice. A bit $$, but I think worth it. Just for Roja I went to a Taco Cabana for lunch. It was very good. I just drove around the city and the 410 loop just to force myself to become familiar with the layout. I feel as though I have the hang of it.

How was Vegas Evo??? I just got back from Tulum, Mexico. Beautiful, crystal blue water 85 and sunny for 7 days. Up here in Mass, a balmy 25 with dirty snow all over the place.

Yeah, I think SA is one of the easiest places to navigate.

I think I have decided I am going to try living with my dad and making the drive. It's definetly cheaper and we've already started laying out ground rules about when he can and can't bother me. I am sure this will change quickly, but I am very excited about starting school and meeting you guys (or seeing some of you again).

Vegas was good, though not nearly as warm as Mexico. Hrm. Perhaps I should schedule some Mexico time.

Sorry to hear about the Mass winter blues. 🙁

Why don't you post what you liked/disliked about the various places you visited? If you have the time.....

GOS2- awwwwwwwwwwwwww. I love taco cabana. *sigh* even more than cha cho's.

I am thinking of coming to town in may as I am doing 'research' for a month. so I will probably take a few days off and come visit my old stomping grounds... 😀

yo all,

I just got back from San Antonio--went to check out apartments! I looked at Carlyle Place, Promontory Pointe, and The Vintage (sorry roja, I didnt stop by sunset ridge or TC 😀 )

All 3 apartments were aesthetically very nice (luxury style apartments), but I liked Carlyle the best!! I put down a deposit to secure an apartment and I was able to get a special low price on an 827 sq ft 1/1. I highly suggest going down there early so you can get a lower price and at least know that you have the apartment you want--they said prices tend to go up in the summer and I'm sure if there's an April "welcome weekend" that apartments will get snatched up quick! You don't have to pre-lease if you don't want to--like I said, I just put down a deposit and that secures my apartment and price.

I'll post my impressions of each apartment complex soon! I even took a bunch of pictures with my digital camera (like 70 of them!) if anyone wants to see.

what kind of special did you get? Details, man! 😀

Well for Carlyle place, they have a 758 sq ft 1/1 and a 827 sq ft 1/1.

The 758 is normally $755, but with all the discounts (med student 3% off, free month, and I dunno what else) she was offering me $650/mo. for a 3rd story, and $675/mo. for a 1st or 2nd story apartment. Both of which are good deals.

But, when I went there, she was not able to show me this apartment (couldn't reach some guy). The only model they had available to show was the 827 sq ft 1/1, so her manager gave me some special rate of $692/mo! This apartment normally goes for $820-855.

I'm working on my report of all 3 apartments as we speak!

Here are my impressions!

Promontory Pointe:
Promontory pointe is located on Medical Drive, quite a ways from the health science center (its on the other side of fredericksburg (spelling?). This apartment complex is HUGE and hilly!! THere were like 25 buildings that must have totaled to about 800 units or so. You drive up a very curvy hill to get up to the main entrance (it reminded me of that hill with the most turns in the world in San Francisco). This apartment complex has a jogging trail, fitness facility, 2 swimming pools, an aerobics room (the lady said they offer free yoga classes, aerobics classes, etc.), and they even have an onsite masseuse--dunno what to make of that! I was able to look at a 747 sq ft 1/1 and a 855 sq ft 1/1. They are running some very temporary specials (she said it would not last long) on these apartments. THe 747 which normally goes for 699 is going for $650/mo. (14 month lease) and the 855 which normally goes for 799 is going for $715/mo. for a 14 month lease. The 855 I looked at had hardwood floors in the kitchen and bathroom, but this was not the case with most of the apartments, she said. I should mention that the closet in the 855 is the same size as the one in the 747, narrow and long. I stopped by this apartment complex at night to see how loud it was and if I would be able to study at night. Well, like people have said, it is pretty loud--it seems like alot of undergraduate or otherwise partying type of people live here. Also, I guess since its so big, there were constantly people going in and out. Coincidentally, I met a 2nd year student on my SWA flight back to Dallas! I asked if she was a med student because I saw her with a HUMUNGOUS pathology book lol  . Anyway, she lived at Promontory Pointe her 1st year and she hated it! Like a poster on SDN said, the management is terrible. She said a good way to tell if an apartment complex is good, is if 2nd years and beyond live there. She currently lives at Whispering Creek (if this isnt the name, then its Whipsering SOMEthing) and she likes it--so this is another option to consider. Like Carlyle, Whispering Creek is a smaller complex, so perhaps you get more personal attention with the management--they probably know everyone on a first name basis. So Promontory Pointe is a nice apartment complex, but I'm not sure its worth it because of the millions of tenants, poor management, and its even a little farther away from campus than the other 2 apartment complexes I looked at.

Here is the link to Promontory Pointe on apartmentguide.com:

The Vintage:
The Vintage is located on Louis Pasteur, literally right next to the health science center. This is a very nice apartment complex and it is not very large. Its in the shape of a U. It is gated, with a security officer at the gate (they are there from 5pm-1am). When I drove in, I immediately felt safe and secure. There is a big circle driveway that leads to the leasing office and both parking garages (there isn't much space to "drive around" in, like at most other apartment compexes--its just a big circle driveway) This complex looks like an outdoor hotel--all of the entrances to the apartments face the inside of the "U" and the balconies face the outside, to the general public. Everyone parks in 1 of the 2 parking garages, which go up 4 or 5 levels--there are elevators too! (I peeked into the garages and I saw alot of Lexuses, Acuras, and BMWs 🙂) You probably always get pretty close parking to your apartment due to the extra vertical real estate of the garage. The lady I talked to said these apartments are "high yield," which means they don't really run any specials, promotions, etc. Right now, there are no vacancies, so the prices are very steep. The 748 sq ft 1/1 is currently running at $850! She said the prices might go back down to about $800 in the summer, when people tend to move out. The deposit on this complex is $200 (!). Unlike the other apartments, you have to pay extra to get valet trash pickup. Also, from what I remember, they don't include W/D units in the apartments--you have to pay extra for this. However, they do have public W/D units that everyone can use--I didn't get to see them. I was not able to get into this apartment complex at night to check out the noise level--this probably speaks to the security of the complex!

Here is the apartmentguide.com link for The Vintage:

Here is a secret "Virtual Tour" website that they gave me to look at:
http://www.circlepix.com/site/tour/skin.htm?id=214987&skin=86&room=&page=

Carlyle place:
Carlyle is located on Babcock, about 2-4 minutes from school (you COULD walk if you really wanted to, but I would just drive the short distance in your car). I loved these apartments the best! It is a very small complex--only about 100 units or so. There is a swimming pool with a heated spa, 24 hr fitness center, and business center (where you can make copies and fax stuff) All apartments come with Whirlpool fridges and microwaves. And all apartments come with actual Washer/Dryer units instead of just the connections (The Vintage didn't come with W/D I dont think). Unlike Promontory pointe, they will re-wire the cable for you, if you want your TV in a different part of the living room than it is when you move in. Again, with these smaller compelexes, it seems like you get more personal attention from management. The staff was warm and welcoming--just like on the phone when you call in (Santina is a sweetheart). They even opened the office early for me so I could come in and look at 9am on a Saturday (I knew it was going to rain in the afternoon, so I wanted to get all my apt shopping done in the morning). They have all sorts of events for their tenants and cookies everyday! The specials and pricing on the 758 and 827 sq. ft 1/1's are posted above in my other post. The deposit is $50 to secure an apartment and price. I drove around Carlyle at night and it was very quiet. Like lane said, you can probably study at home if you don't feel like going to the library.

Here is the link to Carlyle on apartmentguide.com:
http://www.apartmentguide.com/Prope...cedSearch=&wsv_qsNoAreas=&wsv_qsSFlg=&lk=dtTb

In summary, all 3 apartment complexes were nice, so I really think it boils down to management, pricing, and location. Someone should check out Whispering Creek and post their impressions. Good luck! :luck:

txguy- Its okay, its a special person that bucks the 'live near the med school in corporate mainstream apartments.'. 🙂 I lived in The Lodge the first year. I hated it. Moved away and realized that I absolutely did not want to live near the med school. but I'm a bit of a freak. 😀

Wow txguy! You really gave some excellent feedback! I'm planning on going to SA over Spring Break--probably next Wednesday or Thursday. I'll let you guys know what I think.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend. As for me, my relationship is on the rocks. All of the sudden my bf has a problem with my workaholic tendencies and me going to medical school. Guess I'll be starting fresh when I come to SA....

:scared: :scared: I'm sorry to hear that!! Well, if things work out, at least you guys will be sorta close to each other and thus able to visit often (it won't be such a long distance relationship 😳 ). And if not, you will still be at an awesome medical school with great classmates this Fall! 👍

Everything will work out in the end 😀

Cheers,

I'm going to be in SA from the 13th looking at apartments...maybe houses as well...
I don't know if anyone is going to be in town...but I'd love to meet people.

And those were excellent reviews txguy 😀

Dizzydog and I will be there. 🙂

Looks like I'm gonna be in SA a little later than you guys...it depends on when my mom can get a day off b/c she's coming with me =)

txguy--thanks for your kind words. I know that things ultimately work out for the best, and being "unattached" is probably a good thing as I enter a new chapter in my life. I'm just glad that I've got medical school and you guys/gals to look forward to!

TXGuy, thanks for the reviews! Carlyle place is looking like a good deal! 😀

AsianDoc - Hon, I'm really sorry to hear about the bf trouble. 🙁 I hope that he sees the light and things work out. However, if it doesn't then know that you're going to have a class full of supportive and amazing people in SA. We'll see that you're not left alone and that fun is to be had. From our meeting @ the Houston get-together, you're an amazing person and I for one am glad to have you as a classmate. 🙂

txguy - thanks for the awesome feedback! I'm sure it will come in handy...

Asiandoc - I've been recently going through some similar situations (although for different reasons.) All I can say is that its better to go through the drama now than once school starts. Don't be down because things will work out if they are supposed to, and meanwhile, you have a lot of great times to look forward to!

No problem!! 😉

Ditto what Evo said above. From our meeting at the UT Houston night before social, you are truly an amazing person--anyone would be lucky to have you! I bet deep down inside your bf is just sad to see you go and perhaps it will be easier for y'all to deal with it if he's upset with you. 😳 You are right about new beginnings--medical school and San Antonio will allow most of us to have a fresh, new, and exciting start.

i just broke up with my gf of 4 years back in november because of the long distance thing (and she didn't understand why i wouldn't have time to visit her every few weeks, especially as i move up the med school ladder). yes, it does suck. but it's a lot easier to deal with a breakup then be able to focus on school than it would be to try to struggle through a relationship while in school. you still have plenty of time before schools starts to figure things out, so don't worry just yet 🙂

You guys are GREAT! Thanks for all the support! 😀

Asiandoc-

I broke up with my significant other in september of my first year. I was devastated. Never would have studied as much in biochem but it was a great diversion technique.

I am sure you will do okay. There are plenty of ways to distract yourself in med school. 🙂

My fiance broke up with me in August because he was nervous about the whole medical school thing. I went through all the interviews single, picked the best medical school for ME, and now we're back together. I guess what I am trying to say is that things happen for a reason. I would not have picked the school I really loved and instead would have gone somewhere closer to him (A&M since he is going to vet school). I was totally satisified being single in medical school and then things turned around on me again. It will all work out for the best, and if you need a chick to talk to I am here and believe me i have FELT your pain ( I had to take a gorgeous diamond ring off!).

P.S. You're going to be a doctor...if he doesn't want a sugar momma some smart guy will 🙂

Hey guys, I'm doing better today....my bf and I talked for 1.5 hours last night, and though we're still working things out, I feel much better than I did over the weekend. Man, this is a tough age....but it's good to know that I'm not the ONLY one out there who's feeling a little heartbroken.

AG--I'm so glad that you and your fiance got back together! I remember meeting you at our Tech interview when things first started to fall apart. And yes, things DO always work out for the best....I'm a firm believer in that.

I just secured a 1br at Carlyle. Why don't we all live there?? One big happy family.

Just a slight note of jealousy...A&M's new class got to do rounds the other day in Temple and all the people in College Station have met up and hung out already. I am just jealous! I want to get started (I know I'll be cursing myself later...).

Sorry for bringing this stuff up again, but my TMDSAS LMFU is now 030405. I wonder what they are up to this time...

Its kind of hard to believe that those people are just about to have to gear up for the 2010 class. I feel sorry for the people who work in that office. The phone calls...

Their bread and butter is prob med students...still, if it filled up with all SDN peeps...

I think I'm going to look at houses as well as apartments...see if I can convince my parents it would be a good investment for them to buy a house and me pay rent to them.

I was only validated like 3 weeks ago...so they're clearly still doing work. I heard that TMDSAS may be out...maybe not for the class of 2010 (God bless them trying to figure the system out) but sooner rather than later. I think UTSW wants out of TMDSAS...I don't know what their obligations to the service are under legislation or contract but it seems some in UTSW's administration think they'll compete better with Baylor if they can manage their own application process.
*shrug*

EvoDevo said:
Where'd you hear that?

My former employer...of course he's a Baylor grad and I don't know who the devil he heard it from. All second, third...tenth hand. Rumors and hearsay...but interesting to speculate what future applicants will and will not have to go through.

This is actually pretty cool

For the second consecutive year - and for the third time since 1997 - University Health System is ranked among the Top 100 U.S. Hospitals and Top 15 U.S. Teaching Hospitals following an in-depth comparison of the nation’s 6,000 hospitals. It’s a prestigious list that includes just two Texas hospitals.

USCTex said:

That is cool. When I was driving around the medical complex about a week ago I really felt like there were many opportunities to become involved in any area of medicine that is of interest. University, VA, Methodist and Santa Rosa Children's to name a few. Also, when you look at the San Antonio horizon from the Hill Country you see two main areas of the city; downtown proper and the medical complex.

Is the other Texas school on the list, Scott & White in Temple?

EDIT: Just read the article and the other Texas hospital on the top 15 list was S&W.
