UTK c/o 2016 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've talked to about 19375084 people who are current UT vet students and the interviewers here are apparently very nice. Questions aren't canned. It's not bad.

Ok, well I hope I get one today, too! My apartment mail has come and it wasn't in there, but my parents' mail doesn't come until 4:15ish. Can't hardly breathe while waiting!!!

Did the mail come to your permanent or current address (if they are different)??

I've interviewed 3 times, I can answer any questions about the process, LOL. I'm pretty familiar with it, obviously.

:xf: and :luck:

I'm also more than happy to answer any questions. I interviewed three times for my acceptance.

 Definitely not. My favorite question ever was how I thought playing video games would help me excel in veterinary medicine. 😱

My mail just came, and nothing came...

The waiting game continues.

Interviews are the week of March 19-23 (UT's spring break).

Got mine! So surprising as I'm so far away haha Mine is Thursday at 10 am. Very excited 🙂

Hand eye coordination??

And map making skills....

FYI, if you are a gaming nerd, google search the "x-box song". I forget the name of the group that does it, but one of the lines was the inspiration for my answer.

Got an interview! WAHOO!

Wednesday, the 21st!

My mother informed me I have a letter!!!! Eeeeeeeeee

I want to open it but I'm still a work!

What changed the 3rd time that made them decide to finally let you in? Do you know? Any interview advice? Are there a lot of questions about large animals?

The big difference that third time was a vast improvement in the quality of my PS and a metric butt ton of mock-interview practice to get past interview lock up.

Best advice, reread your PS and know what's in it. The general consensus among our class was that everyone who got in had an interview guided at least partially by their PS, even if it was just something that caught the interviewers' attention from the first sentence. I know mine was a substantial portion of my interview.

Second best advice, RELAX! I highly suggest doing a few mock interviews if you tend to get nervous. The interview panels try to keep things very conversational, and they really aren't out to grill you or trip you up with things you don't know.

I don't think they really aim to ask any specific theme of question in every interview. I had no LA questions; in fact, I didn't really have any specific medical questions or anything. Most of my PS centered around enjoying the client aspect of things, so that was a main focus for me., but wasn't even mentioned for other people. The only medical type thing we talked about was new developments in computerized technology (video games=hand eye coordination=robotic surgery...).

The mail doesn't get delivered to my apartment complex until after 6pm, so now I get to spend my time after work literally stalking the mail man. Tonight I was standing behind some bushes just waiting to pounce after he was finished distributing all of the mail... nothing from UTK yet...

I live in california...
and....

I have an interview!!!! Yay!!!

I live in Southern CA, if that helps???

Take a deep breath. 😀 It's just the mail running at different speeds, they send out all the letters at once, and all the letters are one sheet of paper, so timing and envelope size mean nothing.

Ditto this for acceptance/waitlist/rejection letters later on.

Ok. So I am in a bit of a bind.

I soooo don't like that all my interviews happened pretty much the same month. I'm getting waitlisted everywhere and I still have my IS interview to go to. I DONT like turning down any opportunity especially bc I spent the money and researched every school I applied to.

Now I know someone said they interview around 190 OOS. How many do they send out acceptance letters to? I know that around 24 end up going. That's a pretty small acceptance rate. I'm just wondering if it's worth it for me 🙁

Does someone have any more details? Again, I would most definitely go if I found the money.

I actually DID have a specific medical question--explain equine laminitis in a way that the owner could understand. Granted, that could have been because my PS was about growing up around horses and wanting to do mixed practice. Definitely go back and re-read your PS and know what you wrote and why you wrote it. Overall, it was pretty laid-back and a lot better than I was expecting.

I have a couple questions about UTK, hopefully someone on here can help me out....Have they built the new LA hospital that they were planning on building? I know that their website discusses their limited accreditation status and says that they are building new LA facilities to get their full accreditation back, but I can't find any info about the progress of the construction. Also, I looked on the VIRMP website for caseloads and found that UTK has 26,000 LA per year. Is that number correct? If so, that is awesome!! That number is exponentially higher than the other schools that I have applied to!

Yes, the new LA facility is currently being built...looks to be pretty sizable from what I can tell. UT is a construction mecca right now (mostly on main campus though). I think it's supposed to be done in time for the C/O 2014 clinics? Don't quote me on that BUT it will most definitely be done in time for us, and probably classes ahead of us. As far as I know they should regain full accreditation after the completion of the new facility.

Walls are going up nicely and everything. 😀 I'm actually beginning to believe them when they say it should be done for 2014.

That sounds right, but don't quote me on it. There's a chart in the large animal conference room tracking the small and large animal case load for the last 10 years or so, but I haven't been in there in a few weeks, so I can't remember exactly.

Did they send out rejection letters to those OOS applicants who did not get interview invites? Does anyone know?

WELL, no ones answered my question sadly.

But, im 80% sure I found the money to pay for a trip! So, HOPEFULLY I'll be there the 20th!

Yes. Everyone who applies gets a letter letting them know one way or another at every stage you get to.

Sorry, would have answered it, but I honestly don't know. I do know that they over accept OOS spots knowing that people will decline, but not by how much.

I couldn't find any info on how many OOSers UTK accepts, but when I was in Florida for my interview they said that most schools accept 3 OOSers for every spot. Obviously this may not be the case for UTK, it could be higher or lower, but that is just what I've heard. Also, this number does not mean that they accept 3x as many right after the interview, it just means when its all said and done (including the OOSers that they call off the waitlist), it ends up being 3 times the amount that end up going. Hope that helps!

this may help :

sorry if you've seen it and its redundant!

Also, my policy on this whole OSS thing is that I'll go anywhere that takes me so I want choices and as many possibilities. It is a lot of money and you should weigh your chances of actually going if you get accepted versus somewhere else. It's tough ;( I spent weeks last summer narrowing down the school i would apply to (ended up being 10)

I hope you come though 🙂

That was my whole policy too. I've been waitlisted practically everywhere that I applied though, so it's not like I'm definitely in anywhere or definitely rejected!!

Plus I've heard great things about UTK. Hopefully ill be able to go!

My grandparents live in Knoxville so I can totally sympathize about the cost to fly into Tyson airport. I just got my interview invite in the mail, but I've already decided on Tufts so I'm going to turn it down. The campus is so gorgeous. The vet school looks right out onto the Tennessee River. All of the renovations they're doing look really great as well (I visited back in August when I was down there). If you haven't decided on a school, it's definitely worth a trip down there!

Hey Tigerwillow, I am in the same boat. I am going to go. It will just be a really tight money wise for the rest of March. Luckily, I have a friend to stay with during my stay there.

I haven't received a letter either, and I'm in WV. I'm becoming very anxious. 😱

No letter for me yet and I'm in ga. The waiting is awful.

WAHOOO!!!!! Got my interview letter today!!!!! :soexcited::woot::banana::biglove:
Monday March 19th at 4:30! 😀
