I made an UTMB facebook group for the UT Austin students. I searched for one today, I can't believe one hasn't been created yet!

It's called "University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston Class of 2009" - totally original name, I know.

Actually for 2006, it was above 95% with over half the class receiving over a 221 or above. UTMB is probably the best school in Texas for providing USMLE support for its students. Trust me- I'm a 2nd year and I'm getting ready for it now. And yes, you can always accept less money for your fin. aid. In fact, you can request the max amount and then when they offer you your award letter, you can specify exactly how much money you want and they will give that to you. If your not sure how much you will need right now, I would suggest you do that and just lower it later.

Thanks, nobrainer, for the info on how well UTMB's been performing on their STEPs (I have a friend who is finishing her MD there who said the scores started going up her year...correlating with when the admin got many of the kinks out of the new integrated curriculum).

When I was interviewing, I asked the guy who is actually in charge of the new curriculum whether he thought the USMLE score increases were because the the quality of students coming in (ie, MCAT/GPA) to UTMB or the new curriculum. His response was that UTMB has been successful in choosing the type of students who learn well with the PBL/ Integrated Curriculum.

So pretty much, if you Matched at UTMB, they thought you could hack it with the PBL curriculum and STEP 1 prep material they provide, and UTMB will do just about anything to get you ready for your USMLEs. We're in good hands. 😀

Oh, and I followed nobrainer's advice: apply for the financial aid they can offer me, take what I need later when I get my award letter.

Wait a minute, I remember you as the person from the TMDSAS thread who claimed "TX lowered their standards" because applicants with lower MCAT scores than you got in while you weren't accepted. Hmm, your comment has a new light now.
