I lived in Kinsolving for 2 years. It's a girls' dorm, but during the summer it's coed. One of the nice things about Kinsolving is the rooms have sinks, but I heard stories that guys pee in the sinks when they live there in summer. Nasty college guys :barf:.

so i guess it looks like im gonna be the only one living on "far" away 🙁

Haha, that reminds me of that Seinfeld where George pees in the shower.

I love how in depth we can get about urine... it totally shows what attention to detail we're gonna have when we start classes.

Rachelle02, you probably will be getting more bang for your buck by living out west, so no worries.

And Happy Birthday, sinephera! :luck:

Did anyone else get a revised financial aid award today?

revised good or revised bad?

Can anyone (esp. current students) give me an idea how competitive the UTMB summer preceptorships with stipends are?

thinking a little bit too far ahead, aren't we? 😉

for the most part, the only reason a preceptorship would pay you is if that specialty REALLY needs people. I know some family practice in rural/underserved areas will pay a small stipend to students as incentive. Most preceptorships dont pay anything, and we should all be lucky that they don't charge us...

Also, quite a few number of students go abroad each year to places like India, Nicaragua, etc... Students seem to really enjoy their experiences, and they get to do a lot. If you are lucky, there are scholarships and awards to fund part or all of your trip.

Thanks medstu. Guess I was misinformed. What (if anything) do people do for money between 1st and 2nd year? Work at McD's?

Forgot to ask: am i right that you can enroll for summer preceptorships as like a class and get financial aid? If so, do you have any idea how much? I am just a wee bit worried about having enough money, is the reason i'm asking.

i dont know what most students do for money. like i said, some preceptorships do pay you, but they are usually around $500 - $1k, if you get a scholarship for abroad, it'd cover your plane ticket, and probably not much more...students usually use this time to gain experience/build their resume, not to make money. are you concerned that you arent going to get enough finaid money? PM me if you have more personal questions.

yes, you can enroll in either 8 whole weeks of research, or 1 or 2 4-week long preceptorships. if you satisfactorily complete them, they will count towards electives hours for your fourth year. which means you could take an extra month or two during your fourth year for interviews and such, or just a longer vacation. 🙂

as far as finaid, there will be no tuition cost for the summer research or preceptorships, which is good. the only additional finaid you get would be ~$1k to cover your living expenses for the two months. i hope that answered your question...

if you have more questions, feel free to PM me.

UTKB is a gunner!

Everyone's a gunner to me. Maybe that's because I spend an abnormal amount of time watching TV and staring at paragraphs but not really reading.

Ah... graduation...

Oh wait, I have to get back to staring.

Who hasn't gotten their Hepatitis B vaccinations yet? I need to get all 3 and it'll take at least 6 months. Plus another 2 months to check to see if I've built an immunity. Do we have to be finished with all our immunizations by July 1st (when the immunization form is due)? It says on the form that no patient interaction is allowed until all the Hep B vaccines are finished. When do students start interacting with patients?

Anybody know if there are deadlines for accepting the financial aid awards? I think it says something about accepting within 4 weeks of being sent the letter (that's coming up), but does UTMB start sending grants/scholarship info later? Should we wait until late summer to accept?

I got my grants/scholarships in my revised award (which I got after accepting my inital award), so I'd accept it now and see if any revisions get made after you submit all the tax info.

Thanks for answering my question!

So did you accept a whole bunch of loans, receive another financial aid award with grants/scholarships, and accept those? Were you able to decrease the amount of loans you initially accepted?

I would think if you got grants/scholarships, you should be able to decrease the inital loan amount you accepted.

The initial loan amount decreases automatically, since it's replaced by grant and scholarship money. Your total financial aid package amount stays the same.

Yeah, but stalking doesn't exactly count. :meanie:

You start interacting with patients in early or late October, depending on when they schedule your first of four site visits. You do not have to have all of your shots in the series completed by July first. You do, however, want to just go ahead and start the sequence and keep up with it to avoid having a hold put on your registration. Appearantly some people go several months into the school year without finishing their shots for some reason and then the school threatens to put their registration on hold. I'm talking about people who still haven't done anything after the first three modules. I think you can do the whole sequence in 3 months, not counting the titer.

The only preceptorship that I can think of that pays is anesthesiology and its $800. Your fin. aid over the summer only covers living expenses, not tuition. Do a preceptorship or research that you would be interested in and just accept the fact that we're going to be dirt poor for at least another decade.

haha, well said, vr4nut. the summer really should be a time for you to explore your interests and gain knowledge/experience.

although i should add, we all should be thankful that our tuition is much, much lower than private school's. with a little bit of frugal living, i'm sure it'll take you no time to pay off the debts.

the national average med graduate debt is $115k, i'm sure UTMB's is considerably lower than that.

Yeah, not to mention that some people tell me that they pay more for their *in state* tuition than UTMB charges for out of state tuition. Me heart UTMB! 😍

When did y'all get your fin.aid award letters?

I got it a few weeks ago. Initially it was all loan offers. Sometime last week, I checked online and some of it had changed to grant offers. If you've already filled out/processed your FAFSA and completed your UTMB financial aid application, you should receive the award letter via snail mail within a few days. You can also check online. My financial aid letter changed to include grants only after my parental verification form was processed.

With that parental form, who is supposed to sign it? The parent, their boss, and/ or a notary?

Yo mama!

And your daddy should sign the tax return form(s).

And one of them should sign the verification form.

Any body has any suggestion of apartment that are close to the medical school campus, or any apartment finders that can help

I went to look at places a week ago....and I used Apartments Galveston for my locator (409-621-2787)...they were really nice. BUT...I ended up having to get a place far (like...5 miles...which isnt far at all) away because all the places near the campus are filled and are taking names for waitlists....which means you aren't guaranteed a place to live. And...one of the places is a section 8 something or other...meaning...that it allows people of lower income or not so great lifestyles to live there. There are alot of really nice places off of Seawall around 69th st. which is where I am going to live. But I suggest you talk to the apartment locators. I just know that alot of people are thinking that they can wait to find a place and then think they are going to be able to get something close. It would be ideal...but not likely. Sorry for the negativity...I just know that I thought the same thing...and was really disappointed to find out that I wasn't going to get what I wanted.

You can read through earlier comments from the last couple of weeks to see what people think of the more well-known complexs, like carleton/ villa, etc.

Here is another realtor that was recommended to me: http://www.tramonterealty.com/lease.php - you can call Tramonte at 409 765 and meet with a rep at the property on any day of the week. I checked this one out: a garage apt 2/1 near campus at 1505 L Rear for $495/$495. Here are some photos. You can call the # if you are interested in the place (I'd already signed up for PHI CHI, but looked around just in case, so this place is still available).

How did you sign up for PHI CHI?

I'm doing prematric, so I got info on it when UTMB comfirmed my registration. Then I stopped by the frat house, emailed their rep, and sent them a deposit. They were really great with the communications.

ok, I just read some of the post from the past couple of weeks. I should have been keeping up with this site. I hope there is some apartments left for me. Just in case I can find apartments, because am not sure if I will be able to go to galveston anytime soon, Anybody has info about the dorms/apartments that UTMB owns... or are those also filling up fast

If anyone is looking for "nice" places to live, there's some options that are near or on the Strand. There's Strand Lofts, Hennley Lofts, and Market St. Lofts, and one other that used to be an old ice warehouse off of 21st St. and Harborside. All are REALLY REALY nice places to live if you're willing to pay a premium. The guy I know that lives at Market St. lofts has an extremely chic loft with large balconey that overlooks Market St. The only other apartment type place near campus that might not be filled is called Chateau Le Fe (or Fete or whatever) off of 4th St near Seawall. Carleton Courtyard that's near school is the apartment complex that is Section 8 housing, so that accept lower income clients. I have some friends that live there, but they say that sketchy people are around there all the time. Villa Marina off of Harborside is good whereas the one off of Ferry Rd sucks according to my friend. Call some realtors as there probably are some houses converted into individual units that are avaliable close to school. Living far away from class does suck as it gets harder and harder to get up at 8 am in the morning to go sit your butt through 2 hours of lecture. By the end of neuro for ya'll next year, you'll be burned out from all the studying. Galveston is pretty nice on the beach and along the Strand/Downtown areas. However, it is ghetto for such a small town for some odd reason. Don't worry, everyone has stories that can only come from Galveston.

Hmm, I know there's a debate here, but I'd like to throw my hat into the ring.

I'm really scared of complexes that accept Rich People. I mean, I purposely avoided "those places" when I was in college, because they always had loud, destructive parties while I was trying to focus on memorizing organic chemistry reactions. Furthermore, when I did live in a place that accepted Rich People, one of my neighbors broke into my apartment and tried to pet my leg in the middle of the night! (luckily, he's in jail now).

Indeed, I swore never to even park my car in a "Rich" neighborhood after I saw some huge Excursion back into another car, and just peel away without leaving their insurance info. In fact, once when I did park my car in a "Rich" neighborhood overnight, I found the window smashed the next day. 😡 Additionally, whenever I see a group of white guys in baseball caps walking down the street, I *always* hit the lock on my car door. You really can't be too careful.

You know, we all have our sensibilities, and I'm not criticizing individuals who take Section 8 into account when they look for housing (because it is probably be one of the factors I would consider too). However, I would respectfully request that you understand that Section 8 does not automatically mean "undesirable" housing. It's a means for people with low incomes/ SSI/ severe medical problems to afford housing. Indeed, I know people who, namely because of medical bills, qualify for this service.. In fact, this is far too common.

But hey, I'm a hypocrite too - because I admit, as a female you do have to pay close attention to the area you live in (and btw, all of that did happen 🙂 ). :luck:

hey....im always the one with the bad outlook on stuff....haha....but when finding a place....think of move in costs....for example. if you go with a place that is privately owned...the owner usually wants the deposit...which is a full months rent...in a money order. So if you are like me...and still dont have a roommate ... be prepared to shell out the full cost of the apartment in order to hold it. I was looking a place that was cute and soooooo close to campus it hurt....and the owner wanted the full $650 right away in a money order and then the first months rent the day I moved in. Since im doing the pre-matric. thing...that meant $1300 out of my pocket in less than two months. And well....I'm a poor college student paying for everything on my own...so it was not practical for me. I dont know...its just something to think about. I was able to put down a $175 check as a deposit at the place I am going to live and they arent going to deposit it until I move in. Alright...Im just showing another side of the story.

All this housing information is giving me a headache...or maybe it's this cold that I have. Either way--I have a headache. 😳

You guys aren't too late on housing- maybe the most well-advertised ones but there are plenty of good and affordable places to live near campus. You just have to put in a little legwork. There is a constant flux with people graduating, residents finishing and then new students and residents coming in every june-august. Students who are leaving in the summer often post ads on the bulletin boards in the student center, graves building, library, etc. When you come down, check those out because they're probably from outgoing students who will give you an honest description of the place. Then you can check out the houses around campus. Port aux Prince and Marina Pointe are two good places near campus and I know for a fact that there's openings there. They are right off fourth st. near the yacht club. I myself am trying to find somebody to rent my place (check page 17- its a 2/2.5). So don't fret but make sure to come visit and do some legwork.
