I was interviewed on Monday and received the "competitive" e-mail this morning, but my status page still says "Your application is complete." So I guess my point is that don't trust the status page...?

I am under the impression that as long as you are still in the competitive pool, your status page will not change from the original "Your application is complete". However, if you are either accepted or rejected outright after the first ADCOM meeting following your interview or accepted/rescued from the competitive pool, your status page then changes to the "Action was taken on your application on xx/xx/xx. You should receive a letter from our office by xx/xx/xx". So for the majority of us who are wading in the competitive pool, for us to see that statement change on our status page would only mean that we should expect an acceptance package in the mail. Anyone who has been fortunate enough for this to happen to them, can you confirm?

As I understand it, the status page will continue to say "your application is complete" until we are rejected/accepted. If you see a change in the language, then a decision has been made and notification is sent via post office. So, you may trust/abuse the page as you see fit.

How is everyone up to date with ADCOm meeting dates?

Oh, I guess I was under a wrong impression. Sorry about that. 🙂

I checked my status page this morning -- it says that action has been taken on my application and I will receive a letter soon.

So I guess there is either really good or really bad news on the way. I was expecting to end up in the competitive pool, so I'm glad to find out where I stand so quickly (even if it's a rejection, I guess).

Good luck to everybody waiting on uw...

Hey all,

Here is how the UW process works, as told to me by someone close to an admissions official. Yes, I know that sounds sketchy, and I take this info with a grain of salt, but it's interesting nonetheless.

When the EXCOM meets every month, they accept their top N applications (not sure what the value of N is). Of course, there are new apps at the top each month since interviews are going on, but if there aren't N new top apps, then people get admitted from the competitive list (an unusual occurrence).

Everyone else goes to the competitive list unless your committee member didn't go to bat for you, in which case you are rejected.

Good luck to everyone! My application page still has the nebulous "Your application is complete."

I think it's fair to assume that most people on the competitive list have competitive to good stats, how do they actually compare people once they're on the list? Purely by number?

Forgot to mention that part. My source tells me that they use a formula with GPA, MCAT, and interview score factored. This made me wonder whether/how ECs, LORs, and PS factor in, but that is unexplained. It could be part of a personality/depth score, but this is pure speculation on my part.

How are people staying abreast on ADCOM dates? Calling the admissions office?

The next meeting is on the 21st. I have been calling the admissions office, they are very open and friendly about answering any questions regarding the process including ADCOM dates.

Thanks for the update...They are meeting more than once a month now?

yup. they are meeting once a week now so people should start being rescued from the dreaded pool now.

Yah, I suspect people who wouldn't have been admitted at a monthly meeting and have been languishing on the competitive list now may be admitted at the weekly meetings as the admissions overtake the "supply" of very qualified applicants from new interviews (if that makes any sense). And not a moment too soon! 🙄

Sooo if anyone has any clue...I'm interviewing on February 2nd as a WWAMI applicant...any idea when I may hear back? Will they tell me at the interview?

It's my understanding (although I may be wrong... someone correct me if I am) that WWAMI applicants hear back after the final March adcom admission-fest.

Unrelated question: does anyone know of anyone who has been rejected post-interview rather than waitlisted?

I got the acceptance packet today! I will almost certainly be going to the UW next year. I was very surprised to not initially go into the competitive pool -- I enjoyed my interview, but didn't feel like I got to completely or successfully answer alot of the questions I was asked. After a few days of dreading the possibility of an immediate rejection, this is a huge relief.

Good luck again to everybody else waiting to hear or interview at the UW.

Hey man, that's AWESOME, congratulations!!! When did you interview? Maybe I'll see you there next year, if my interview goes well in two weeks!

I interviewed in mid-December. Good luck with your interview -- I think they really go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. Just make sure you are prepared to talk about your views on medical issues.

Congratulations congratulations! What an enormous relief that must be. Sigh, I wish I could know today...

Sounds like a great idea--I'll bring the soda with my name written in the bubbles. That will impress them.... 😉

Good luck all!

So has anyone else checked their status page a hundred times this morning yet? I have......and still nothing. Anyone know the next ADCOM dates?

I am unfamiliar with this "status link" , what exactly is the link?

I just recieved an automated e-mail this morning from rainier.dom (aka Pat. Fero) stating that I am in the hamster pool of the competitives. (special Ed-)YAY!!!!!!

I am thus assuming some acceptance & rejection leters will get sent out today.

Good luck all

Thank you to everyone who made posts in this thread. I had no idea that one could tell when action was taken on your file or when the adcom meetings were held. Given that there was a meeting on Friday, I decided to check this morning and sure enough, action was taken and I can expect a letter this week. EEEKKKSSSS! I think I was among the first to interview back in October and I was initially placed in the competitive pool. I'm VERY nervous about the content of the letter. I actually broke out into a sweat when I saw that final action has been taken. In fact, my palms are STILL sweating.

I am a reapplicant. Last year I applied only to UW. After first being placed in the competitve pool, I was REJECTED. I applied very late, however, and Dr. Samson told me that because I am already a professional (med mal defense attorney) that the adcom was not convinced that I was truly serious about med school because I only applied to one school. ??? Additionally, my interview was terrible. This year, I applied to tons of schools and had all of my interviews before UW. I was accepted everywhere I applied and kept my application active (with the exception of Mayo, although I did interview). The UW interview could not have gone better. Still, I'm terrified that I'm going to get the thin letter in the mail again. At least I can stop obsessing about the mail in a few days. 🙂

Thanks again for sharing the information and I wish everyone the very best of luck. UW is a tough egg to crack!

I would think (now keep in mind I have NO IDEA what I'm talking about) that they save most rejections for April because they have no reason to reject anyone any earlier.... Not to try to give false hope, but I'd be more excited than worried if I were you.... :luck: :luck: :luck:

Thank you for the encouragement. I AM excited, but I also got burned last year. I guess that I just want it so much. I am willing to go anywhere, but I'm married, and I would have to do the long-distance relationship for at least two years if I go somewhere else. The cost of tuition is another issue....

I got the rejection in March last year, a few weeks prior to the final adcom meeting. I think that your logic about the timing is sound, however, so I will wait with both trepidation and hope. 😕

I couldn't stand waiting. I called. They told me that I'm IN! I cannot believe it. I'm still in shock. I hope to see all of you this fall. 🙂

Congratulations Neuro! That's awesome!

Thank you, Sarikate and Bananaface. I feel sort of numb right now. I think I'm still amazed. All of the stress is gone and all of the uncertainties have just fallen into place all at once. It's a strange feeling. I've been working toward this for so many years that it almost seems surreal.

I wish you the very best in your interview, Sarikate. I'm sure you already know this, but there WILL be questions on medical ethics. If you haven't already, go to the UW website and look at all of the cases of medical ethics that they list. It is great! I hope I see you in class this fall.

Woohoo! Another one in! I interviewed early in October too.... I certainly hope that they'll revisit those applicants again.
Sarikate--the interview was not nearly as bad as interview feedback from past years makes it look. All my interviewers were really nice. Just be totally yourself and think things through as you respond and I'm sure you'll have a rich conversation! Good luck!

OlyDoc2B, you can be assured now that they are plucking people out of the competitive pool at this point, because that is what happened to me.

I agree with your assessment of the interview: it is not as high stress as it used to be, even a year ago. In my case, it was very friendly and relaxed. I actually walked out energized, relaxed, and excited.

Darling MedicineBird informed me that Alaska residents will be hearing back from the ADCOM in February, soon after our interview week. It can't come soon enough. I'm way more nervous for this interview than I was for the other three, shouldn't it be the other way around? Darn...I need a valium.

Whoa--no, unfortunately I didn't mean that I was another one in, just cheering on NeuroSync (although I see now how you could read it that way). No, I think I'll just hang out in the pool a while longer. I'm actually feeling pretty glum about my own chances--51% off competitive list seemed great at first, but I'm starting to feel like I may be of the 49% these days.... Oh well. If it doesn't work out I'll just bug them again next year!
Anyone writing brilliant letters of interest? I'm not a student now, so couldn't write an end-of-quarter update letter, but I did update them on my recent activities as an escort at UWMC. I'm thinking now, though, that that may have come across as a "hey, now I'm a totally mediocre applicant" letter because I'm realizing that EVERYONE that is an escort is a pre-med student looking to apply at the U. It's very hard to keep my application cutting edge right now because I'm a stay at home mom. I don't think they'll feel quite as excited as I do when my daughter hurdles over yet another developmental milestone! "I'd like to point out what a wonderful applicant I am because now my daughter can string full sentences together"..... No, that just won't work!
How are you other poolers passing the time?

I'm in limbo at three other schools and was told by one that I'd need to take the MCAT again in April before they'll let me in this fall (kind of a weird, long story). Anyway, I'm spending my in-limbo days by staring at the brand new Examkrackers books on my kitchen counter, salivating for an acceptance this week...

Does anyone know how much influence these "update letters" have?

Olydoc- I think that being involved in your daughter's life is a very good credential. You could add to your escort activity by saying "In addition to being a full time mom......"

Good luck (I'm still hoping for the big envelope too)

Anyone with recent interviews know when the next ADCOM meeting is for WA applicants? The office didn't offer any solid answers. One of the advisors actually told me that Feb 3rd was the last normal ADCOM meeting for WA residents until the end of march...i hope thats not true!

It may be true depending upon what they are doing with the other states. I know that they set aside time for AK, MT, and WY, specifically. That may be why they said that. Final decisions for those prosepctive students comes much sooner than it does for WA applicants.

Below is the interview schedule for the WWAMI states. I talked to the admissions office yesterday and they said the final decisions would be made on the Friday of the last week of interviews for that particular state. People will be taken out of the competetive pool in March as people turn down their acceptances.

Idaho December 1-3, Feb 9-11, March 8-11
Montana: January 24-28, February 21-25
Alaska: February 2-4, February 28-March 4
Wyoming: February 14-18

Anyone know how many people they interview from the WWAMI states? It probably varies for each...all I know is that the entering Alaska class is 10.

Sarikate said:

My gues is that you're right in that it varies. I know you only compete against those from your own state though -- which is good. Maybe you could call pre-med advisors at UAA (Dr. Quentin Reuer) , APU and UAF and ask what their applicant numbers are this year. That would give you a rough estimate. Given that there are relatively few interview dates for Alaskans the pool can't be that huge.....we hope.

Congrats to all those who were accepted this cycle! You guys must be awesome! I was wondering if anyone knows when the next excomm meeting is and when people start to be rescued from the competitive pool...

For the reapplicants that got in: I was just wondering what you did differently in your application this time around and how the interview compared...I'm reapplying as well and I don't know how to gauge what is going on...I've been thrown into the pool again this year, granted I've been in the pool for lmost two days and I'm already thinking about next years application b/c the same thing might happen again. Last year, I was rejected after almost 5 months in the pool. Any suggestions for application improvements/letters? Since last year, I did what Dr. Samson suggested "have fun" and I traveled and volunteered in hospitals abroad and retook the MCAT in August (improved scores)...gained mentoring/teaching experience...ahhhhhhh, I just don't know what to do for next year...sorry, I'm just very frustrated and venting.

I guess I spoke to Dr. Reuer about, oh, three years ago now - from what I recall he said there were usually around 60-70 applicants. That's not so bad, right? Bet my MCAT was lower than all of theirs combined though : )
