If you were a fourth year who was getting ready to have tons of time on your hands and extra dough to spend, where would YOU go?

I need to do something non match or school related, RIGHT NOW! so, planning a vacation (or several mini ones) seems like it would be a good distraction.

renting a beach house south of the border, maybe Belize, Costa Rica, somewhere in Mexico.......live like a rock star and enjoy time away from home.

Naw, if you have weeks at a time, go somewhere you won't be able to go easily for many years. Asia, australia, etc. You can lie on some beautiful thai beach for $25/day if you want sun.

i highly recommend cabo san lucas...my favorite resort is pueblo bonito pacifica. its a spa, beautiful beach, adults only - no children allowed, nice restaurants

i spent a semester abroad in costa rica. It was beautiful. there is sooooooooo much to do there. I also traveled briefly to Panama, Nicaragua, Belize, and Guatemala. All very beautiful countries. Cheap, with maybe the exception of Costa Rica. I heard that things have gotten much more expensive since I last visited (2001). I am considering returning for at least part of this break.

However, I want to weigh all of my options. Thailand...hmmm...how many vaccines would one need to go there? Not trying to be funny. seriously, how many? How expensive is it? Who has been to australia/new zealand recently? What did u do other than lie on a beach all day? Just in case I feel a little less than totally lazy.

somewhere in the carribbean for a few days, then put the rest in savings for the moving and homebuying expenses (not to mention intern-year TV purchase and car repairs) I'm about to incur. not to be facetious, but I don't regret being financially conservative at the end of my 4th year one single second. I know people who have racked up thousands of dollars of debt this year- not the student loan kind, which we all have too. I was able to get away for a few days, take a nice break, but man was it nice to have "all that extra money" saved up. closing costs are a bitch.

you wanna live like a rock star.. french riviera.. no where else my friend.

maybe ibiza.. too.. a tad different though

Gasem, tell me what your interests are. Maybe I can help.

I have lots of ideas. I have trips planned for myself that I may never get to do but would love to share.

Thanks Noy. I am pretty much interested in doing anything memorable. I love the arts, museums, expoloring new cultures, visiting ruins, ecotourism type stuff, snorkeling, horseback riding, mild-moderate hiking, or just lying around on a beach. By the way, some of you may be interested in Cave Tubing in Belize, Zip lining through the cloud forests in costa rica or volcanic tours and tons of national park activities; or swimming in a volcanic lake in Nicaragua.

Noy, If you have any ideas on how to see the "best parts" of Europe in one trip, please let me know. I am very interested in some sort of European tour. Thanks!

Vaccines - not sure. I bet the CDC has a site for that.

Thailand - can be incredibly cheap (assuming the dollar hasn't plummeted too far). There are places where you can live very, very nicely on a beautiful, sunny beach for $25/day, maybe less - really depends on your lodging expectations.

Aus/NZ - tons, tons of stuff to do, very little of it relating to beaches. NZ is more the hiking/backpacking/canyoning/etc place. Asking what you would do in Australia is kind of like asking what you would do on the east coast. You have the great barrier reef in the north, Syndey and Melbourne with big city stuff, Tasmania for outdoor adventures.

Seriously, what's your budget for time and $$.

My 4th year I spent 2 weeks roaming around italy, then a week lying on the beach in the greek islands. It wasn't the cheapest vacation, but I wouldn't trade those 3 weeks for anything. You can always stay in hostels if you're looking to go the cheap route.

I am in the process of planning a trip to Spain for 4-5 weeks. I've been learning Spanish in the car over the past 6 months and thought that this would be a good way to make some of that more concrete, while touring a sweet country. Looks like hostels run in the $20-25 range.

Anybody have a good website for finding international flights, with flexible dates? I've been using kayak.com--a great site, no doubt--but was wondering if anyone uses any other engines.

I have about $5,000 and 2 months for all of my adventures. Europe and Australia/New Zealand are higher up on my list than Asia. I think I would have a harder time convincing my travel mate/mates on this one.

I took my first trip abroad at the end of my 4th year at the age of 29. I went to amsterdam, brussels, Brugge, cologne, along the rhine, munich, and prague. I think I did like 18 days total, spent about $2500 (did mostly hostels; yes, even at 29). It was a lot of work, in a sense, but I got to see some really cool things, and I'll never forget it. Particularly if you're of European heritage (I am); there's just something about seeing the real versions of stuff you were exposed to as a kid in the name of your cultural/ethnic heritage. I've been back twice now in just 2 years. If you're considering Europe:

1) the dollar is weak as $hit against the euro.
2) you can fly in pretty much to the cheapest city, then take the train or Ryan air (honestly, REALLY cheap INTRAcontinental flights) to wherever you really want to be.
3) the trains and hostels are WAY better/cleaner/easier there than here (and probably anywhere else in the world), so you can save a lot of money on hotels/cars, etc.
4) for all his nerdiness, Rick Steves has great travel advice/books/deals, and on his website, www.ricksteves.com you can fart around and find his list of "best trip for X days..." and so on.

I don't have any experience with Europe. but I think a tour of all the castles would be nice. I'd also like to go to Romania and see Count Dracula's place. My family descends from Scotland and i'd like to visit there as well. But I can't guide you at all in this area.

have this link never used it: http://www.wegolo.com/(S(x1cjcl45qmddtpyxoy5vvz45))/step1.aspx

With a little preparation you can fly your way around europe very cheaply (reserving early) and save time vs train
Belgium is an awesome base to fly to any other place and is 1h30 from Paris or amsterdam by train: http://www.thalys.com
www.ryanair.com : to everywhere
www.wizzair.com : to eastern europe
www.vueling.com : to Spain

Which areas do you know best, Noy? I am all ears. You may just convince me or another reader to take your dream trip.

dhb and cchoukal...awesome posts! I will definitely check into those links. 🙂

Nah. who knows where I will be in 25yrs. Life really is too friggin' short as today's primary news story demonstrates. I know that this vacation will be very memorable and I can refer back to it when times are rough in residency. I am all about living now, while I can. Money comes and goes; life experiences are with you forever (corny, but true).

So let's see -$5K and 2 months - call that $600/wk or $80/day total.

I'm assuming we're talking about sometime in the next few months.

Practical things to consider
Europe - $500 for RT airfare from the midwest where it seem you're based, perhaps a little less. Figure $500-$1000 for intra-europe travel. We're now down to $65/day ($4000/60). A hostel bed in a 4+ person room will run $15-30/night depending on location. Call it an average of $20/night. That gives you $45/day to eat, enter museums, buy subway tickets, etc. Doable, but that's going to be a very tight existence. (And it's also still cold and dark in europe. As a point of reference, the original Frommer's Europe on $5/day has just published it's final edition - Europe on $99/day.

Australia/NZ - It's summer/high season down south. Airfare is going to be more expensive - maybe as much as $1500. You're now down to $60/day to live on for everything. Not sure that's workable.

So ... if you really want to travel for two months, you need
a) to be willing to go really bare bones in an industrialized country
b) to find more money or take a shorter trip
c) go somewhere cheap ... SE Asia is a good combination of safe, cheap and warm.

If you're planning on flying anywhere unconventional, I actually found STA to be very helpful- just called them on the phone. We were flying into Cameroon, so probably not the best choice for Rome, but their agent was very helpful and was able to do routing and depart/return city combos to get us a reasonable price.

I appreciate the time you have taken to lay this out for me. Here's what I have been thinking. I have been eyeing some southern caribbean cruises. The ones I am most interested in are 9 days in length and range from $650-$864. I would take this trip in April.

Vacation #2: Europe, Australia/NZ or Costa Rica, w/Europe currently coming in #1. I was thinking 2 weeks for this trip and sometime in Late May or early June. How will the weather be then? I am trying to see what types of all-inclusive tours are available. What do you think?

Money goes only if you spend it....

as for life experiences....I have plenty that I wish I didn't have....and they're with me forever....

Late May/early june is right at that transition from the "shoulder" season to "high" season, when prices for everything go up and the crowds roll in. If I were going to Europe and planned any time in big cities, I'd probably try to go in May rather than June. In terms of duration, 2-3 weeks is good, particularly if you're backpacking/hosteling. After awhile, you kinda want your own space again.

I would echo the comment about STA (student travel agency). Nearly all major universities have an office. They can get great discounts on airfare and train passes. That's another thing altogether; whether or not to get a Eurail pass. Depending on where you plan to be, there are regional passes and continent passes with unlimited rides and some combination of # of rides in so many days. Look carefully at what you're buying. If you're itinerary is not totally set, you may find that that availability of regional passes will guide which countries you want to go to.

If, on the other hand, you're going with 3-4 people, renting a car can make a lot more sense. But, again, this depends on your itinerary. If you're going to spend all your time in major cities, take the train, even if the car would've been cheaper split 4 ways. You don't want to bother with parking, plus, with the train, you can often get overnight trains between major cities which saves you on hotel AND you avoid wasting a day in transit.

Anyway, there're a million guidebooks which will cover this kind of stuff better than I can, but these are some prelimenary things to have in the back of your mind as you get started.

Whatever you decide, do SOMETHING. You're unlikely to have this big a chunk of time totally uncommitted ever again.

May/June is the best time to visit Europe: great weather and not as crowded as july/august

Thank you so much. I didn't consider the train option, as I don't know much about it. I am off today, so maybe I will go look at travel books at Barnes and Noble. I am soooooooooooooo friggin' excited about everything. Match Day, 2 months of traveling (which will include one bachelorette party in Vegas for 3 days & 3 days of craziness for my undergrad reunion), Graduation parties, Graduation, Chill time after graduation, & (hopefully) moving to a new city. 🙂😀😉😛😱😕:scared::laugh:😍

Go to central america. Guatemala has great ruins and cool weather and lots of Mayan culture, Honduras and Belize and Nicaragua have great beaches and scuba diving, El Salvador and Costa Rica have great surfing (http://www.wavehunters.com/elsalvador/elsal_surf.asp).

Your dollar goes far, cheap to get there, food is cheap, easy to get around since the countries are small. People are nice and friendly. American dollar is always welcomed.

I'm with Tough here. Central America has my interest currently and then South America after that. I am currently working on planning a 1 month trip south of the border. As for what I know best, thats hard. I can't say that I know any place really well. I tend to go somewhere and then not really go back for a while. I do know Costa Rica well and there are some places there that I could just lose myself in. Mostly on the Pacific coast. Places like Santa Teresa, Avellanes, etc. You can just walk into town and find your way.

My sister lives in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I will get there soon. Probably during our summer, their winter.

Don't forget Cave tubing in Belize. That was lots o fun.

Maybe I should look into south america. i have been to most of central america. I did have a blast each time. I spent four months in costa rica and would highly recommend it to anyone. I have never been to santa teresa or avellanes, though. hmmm...maybe i SHOULD go back to central america. Lord knows it's gorgeous.

I have one last chance on the whole "who is willing to pay whatever to go to Europe with me" thing. If that fails, Central or South America it is, as lots of my friends are willing to do that trip.

Keep the advice coming folks! Thanks a bunch for all of your current replies

visiting ruins [...] mild-moderate hiking

Hike the Inca Trail to Macchu Picchu. Not exactly a mild hike because of the altitude, but if you find yourself sucking wind you can always pay a local $20 or $30 to carry your pack. 🙂 Lots of other cool Inca ruins to visit on day trips around Cuzco too.

....Bugs Bunny pops out of a hole and starts yelling:

"MIAMI BEACH!!!! I'M IN MIAMI BEACH!!!!"

old childhood memory of mine....funny cartoon.

Anyways, I'm goin' to Miami Beach Feb 19th.

Great place to hang out and do absolutely nothing constructive.

So this should give those of us waiting on that pesky match something else to focus on.

Let's hear it. Where did you guys decide to go for vacay?

Just booked a trip like this for late March/early April. Machu Picchu, Cuzco, Amazon Jungle. 12 days away from the hospital and CA-1 woes 😀

Cusco and Macchu Picchu...what a great trip. If you haven't been there before, you're going to love it. Flying from Lima to Cusco was one of the more harrowing but beautiful flights that I've been on. Try to get a window seat...the 30 minutes before you land, you'll have some amazing views of the Andes.

Thats so funny. I am going to Lima, Cusco, and Macchu Picchu after graduation too!

I also lived in Belize the summer before med school started and would highly recommend it! Spend a few days at the coast, then go to San Ignacio and catch all the tours you can (jungle, caving, canoe). Also stop by Tikal in Guatemala for a day or two. I suggest atleast 2 because its phenomenal!

Cave tubing in Belize is awesome.

The wife and I are heading to Europe for a little over 2 weeks and then to the Riviera Maya for a week! Spending almost the whole month of may traveling. I can't wait as I have 4 more weeks of Med 4 left!

Gasem--have you traveled yet? If not, I'd go to Thailand/Indonesia--now. You'll get great bang for the buck there. Air will be your greatest cost. Get SCUBA certified your first week, and then spend 3 hours/day underwater. You will never, ever forget or regret your decision.

I will strongly consider it kraph. But as I mentioned before, my traveling buddies were being really lame when it came to making international travel plans. One friend is begging me to go to Hong Kong, though. I am considering it. Currently all I have planned is a week in the Caribbean and a "drink like a phish, party like a young hollywood star" trip to Vegas.

Thanks for the tip. 🙂

Well it's still work related but I'm combing work and lazy *** pleasure by heading to the ASRA meeting this year in Cancun. Was cheaper to go for 7 days as a package with flight so that's what I'm doing and taking the wife as well. Not that cheap though....

Friggin blizzards! I better be able to leave for el caribe in two weeks. 🙁

Contiki Tour. Let some of those eager young western European girls show you how much they truly hate Americans with their angry-but-strangely-carefree-and-uninhibted sex.
