Very low GPA, high DAT

Hey everyone, I'm very scared about my chances about getting into dental school. My first 3 semesters in college I did absolutely terrible. I ended up getting an overall of 2.33 because I was in a terribly abusive relationship and was not allowed to leave my house. I then transferred out to another college.

I did decent the first few semesters although I am guilty of getting a few C's and W's but then lost one of my family members due to cancer. School didn't become a priority and therefore I received an F (on bio 2 unfortunately), W and D on my transcript for that semester.

A few more semesters have gone by and I have a strong upward trend (over a 3.85 for the past 2 semesters) and retook the classes I did poorly in and got an A+ from the semester where my grandfather was struck with cancer.

My overall GPA in my second college is now a 3.4, however I am worried about when I submit both my transcripts on the AADSAS, my GPA will drop to a 3.0

I have taken my DAT and I have acheived a TS of 25 and an AA of 23. How do my chances look?

I think you're fine, honestly. You've shown an upward trend in GPA and can explain your prior sub-par performance. Apply early and you're bound to get interviews and probably an acceptance.

Sorry it happened to you. I do agree your academic process fist looked terrible. However, you re-taked and your scores looks excessively good. You showed that you improved it. Plus, your DAT scores are impressive. You have chances. Be confident and good look to you

You may have chances if you explain your situation in your application in background information. I also suggest writing about these experiences in the personal statement and how overcoming them made you stronger and prepared you for the dental school.

Turn your disadvantage into an advantage and hope for the best, good luck.

Most dental schools screen at 2.75 sGPA and cGPA, so you're good. Keep doing well in upper division science classes (bio, chem, physics, math) at 4 year college and get some shadowing or EC's that you enjoy into your app and you'll be fine.
