Hello,
Writing from the southeast and wondering what the reputation of Virginia Mason is like. Do they work with UW at all..etc. Have a strong interest in Cards...is this a possibility out of this program. Anyway, any advice or thoughts would be appreciated.

Dont think so. I believe there are two other local community VA programs around that is UW affiliated, but dont believe Virginia Mason is. Lots of people I know are looking at VM programs as a couple's match back-up for UW.

Again, for something competitive like cards, I would say your best bet is a solid academic program to give you the edge you need. At the very least you would want a community/county program with strong academic ties with academic centers (ie. Santa Clara, Harbor UCLA, etc.) so you wont get screwed when it comes to getting letters and political schmoozing stuff, etc.

Thanks for the reply....I guess I was hoping that VM was a community hospital with strong academic ties....you hit it on the head, I am in a couples match with my spouse interviewing at UW...we are trying to make sure we are not going to waste the 2000 bucks it will cost us to go out to seattle for the interview

I interviewed for the transitional yr there (mixed in with categorical folks, so got the whole schpiel) and they said their cards and GI are especially strong and that people do end up in fellowships from there. One R3 I met was planning on cards but taking a year to be a hospitalist first --it seems that is common in some community prog (they said that about Santa Clara as well). The chief residents or PD should be happy to talk to you about this. Good luck with couples match. Seattle was an awesome town.
