hey all

I had a few questions on Vision 2015 for pods.

what exactly is vision 2015? I know its to achieve parity with MD/DO, but how is that so? Will the scope of DPM practice increase? Will DPM students have to rotate through OB/GYN and Psych?

What are the pros/cons?

How much of a reality is vision 2015 and how will it affect the future of the profession?

I've read a bit online but I would like to hear what others have to say.

hoping for a nice friendly, informative discussion. please keep sarcastic or rhetorical comments off the board.

thanks

My friend, this is the wrong section to post that question. Although pre-pods lightly unerstand 2015, we can not elaborate enough about it to answer you questions. This question is better off in the POD student forum or maybe resident/attending.

Many of the current students and attendings look at the pre-pod forum to answer questions. However, it's an important question so do you mind posting it in those other forums as well just to get as much feedback as possible? If you don't, then I can do it because I was actually wondering the same thing. I'll be a 2015 graduate so I feel like I should know what this huge goal is for our class before I start. You ask an important question ...

The best thing i can tell you is google as much about the goals of Western University's podiatry program. Look close at their curriculum vs the other podiatry programs. Before any praise or criticism can go out, we are all desperately waiting to see the results of a class that can go through that curriculum and how it will impact their pod board results. In general, it is a idea about podiatrists being seen more equivalent to DO/MDs. By making the curriculum a DO/MD curriculum + pod classes -OMM, student is see as the same as any other student that specializes. This will have a huge impact on salaries and other things. There are many pros and cons to this argument. Western is the most V2015 pro in the country. The are also the youngest program and have really hung their hat on this concept. I am going to CSPM which is perhaps the least V2015 friendly program. I don't know all the admin stuff and legal stuff, but this is at least a start for you.

Vision 2015 in a nutshell is not about parity per se.

It is about providing each graduate with 3 years of post graduate podiatric medicine and surgery residency training. That is TRULY what it is about.

The extension of this will hopefully, eventually, be a national scope of practice doctrum, an easier time with hospital privileging and getting on insurance plans, and a more informed public.

Step one of making all residencies 3 years is on its way to coming to fruition. The next step is making sure ALL graduates have access to residency training. THEN the focus will shift to scope of practice issues...etc.

This parity issue will rage on for years still, if it will ever be resolved at all. Realistically, as I've said many times, be the best Podiatrist you can be. Get the most out of your schooling and residency and then be an educated, ethical, excellent practitioner. If you are interested in adding to the profession politically, go for it. It is sometimes a frustrating and thankless job, but I find my experiences with it very rewarding.

I hope that sheds some light on the topic.
