VMCAS Questions and Rants c/o 2030

Okay, thanks! Then what if they just require 3 hours of O Chem, but I took O Chem I and II and had a better grade in II? Can I select O Chem II to fulfill the requirement?

Depends. I need to use biochem as an example. I got a C in biochem 1 but a A in biochem 2. So I used biochem 2 **after contacting schools to see if that was fine**. The vast majority said yes, but this was 10+ year ago

During my first semester of college, I got straight B+s. In all subsequent semesters, the majority of my grades were As/A minuses, including in upper level science courses. There was no significant life event, simply poor adaptation to college, for me to point to regarding my first semester. Is it worth saying something in my explanation statement or would the improvement in grades on my transcript be telling enough?

Please don't use the explanation statement for this. Your GPA would be 3.6+ with an upward trend. It will be obvious you figured out how to college.

Hi all! I'm a non trad applicant (currently *crying* as I painfully try to enter 15 years of experience into my application 😭), and I was wondering how we're listing foster experience hours.

I think most shelters log hours as 3-5 per day, but I'm not 100% on that.

I've fostered dogs for fun, but most of my fostering has been neonates, special needs pets, and police custody/court hold animals for a decade at several different rescues. I spend between 1/4 to 1/2 of the year with a foster animal at home.

Thank you!

I would estimate as accurately as possible from what you can remember. 3-5 hours a day doesn't seem that realistic unless you are dealing with large/multiple litters. If you are trying to count time devoted to 'normal' animals that just hang out with you at home with minimal care needed, that's venturing into pet ownership. Counting pet ownership hours is a little controversial and you'll get different opinions on it.

Fellow non-trad here. I counted fosters, but only a very limited amount, and in animal experience. I’d say I never counted more than 10-20 hours of animal experience per animal, one longer foster I think I counted 40 hours but it was a very needy case.

I didn’t count any hours for pets but did discuss pets in essays/interviews.

Generally, I chose to underestimate my hours in all experiences that weren’t recent. I am in my mid-30s and thus also had a ton to enter. But I would err on the side of lower hours because, honestly, what matters more is how you describe all your experiences.

They know that we’re all doing our best to estimate hours, and I think the best way to assess foster hours is active time you spent caring for them or participating in rescue functions. For me, that didn’t boil down to a lot.

I am working on filling out vmcas right now and I see that the order of experiences are not chronological but based on the order I enter them. Obviously I am going to list my veterinary experiences and then my animal experiences and then my research experiences, but after that I am not sure. I have a WIDE variety of other experiences including multiple tutoring / teaching assistant things, non-vet/animal jobs, club involvement / extracurriculars, leadership stuff, tons of other volunteering, etc. Should i just do chronological after vet/animal/research or should i follow a different order? I am 25, so I have got experiences from the past 10 years including high school, college, and postgrad - I know this is all subjective but would just like opinions/guidance. Thanks!

This will probably get moved to the VMCAS questions thread.

Feeling super nervous because I’ve talked to about 4 or 5 people who I work with or go to school that are on their 2nd or 3rd time applying and have all gotten rejected, all with amazing stats and experience hours.
My in state school is Davis so it makes things harder.
It’s hard staying hopeful especially bc I can only afford 4 schools 😩

Not sure what your specific financial situation is, but I was able to get two applications completely paid for through VMCAS. I think I had to give them a tax return or something to see if I qualified.

They have a fee waiver program application opening in June but it only covers the first one. If approved, 1 of the schools I’m applying to will waive their supplemental and 1 will reimburse for their supplemental but still have to pay for them in vmcas :/

I've submitted my VMCAS application and supplemental to a school and ordered all my transcripts (trying to apply to LMU for spring semester). What happens to information that I add now?
If I add new experiences, will LMU see it? Will other schools that I apply to in the fall see it?
If I'm still taking prereqs, do I submit my summer transcripts to VMCAS again and do hey reverify them?

Hi, I got my first application waived via VMCAS and then a few days later, I got an email saying I qualified for Merck Fee waiver as well. So I got two schools waived.

As for supplemental fees, that really does depend on the school. They don’t always advertise the fact that they can waive the fee. Last I checked, Tennessee didn’t have a fee waiver but I was able to get mine waived after I emailed admissions to ask.

Hi everyone. I'm currently looking at some of the essay questions that I responded to last cycle (this is my second cycle and the prompt is identical for one of the schools). I am very satisfied with the way that I answered the question previously, so is there any harm in reusing my answer from last year?

In my opinion, you’re cheating yourself if you reuse materials from a previous cycle. Even if you think it was perfect for your application last year, how will you show growth of understanding, new skills/viewpoints, adaptations, added maturity…. ?

Did you get an interview to this school? Were you waitlisted? Even then, I’d say to rework it at least a little. But if you didn’t get any positive feedback from the school, I wouldn’t assume your essay was perfect. Especially if you have a high GPA/lots of experience (not sure what your stats are), your essays may not be as perfect as you think.

As someone who has worked professionally as a writer and editor, I can tell you there’s almost ALWAYS a way to improve your writing. Happy to review this piece and give pointers, if you’d like. Even if you reword just a bit or alter some of the structure, add a new example, etc., you can really improve!

Question about in progress/planned courses.
Say I put on my vmcas application that I’m planning to take a course (not a required prerequisite) but then when the semester comes, that course isn’t available and I have to take a different one and by that point, my vmcas app is submitted. Will I be able to go back and change it? Will they care that it isn’t what I said I’d be taking at the time of applying or does it not matter as much bc its not a prerequisite course.

I only ask bc my uni only offers certain classes in only spring or only fall or odd/even years only and sometimes it’s hard to tell if they’ll offer them for upcoming semesters so I can only guess based on previous years.
I have two electives that I'll take spring 2026. I just listed them under planned/pending and indicated them as ANSC elective 3000-4000 course.:eyebrow:

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone knows more specifics about grade replacements on the VMCAS? I am a non-traditional applicant with extenuating circumstances, so I have been in school for quite some time. I had a couple C's in some prereqs when I was at community college. I do not have the ability to retake them at that school but can retake the same courses at my university (graduate). Will my grades be able to be replaced by doing this, or will they just average it out into my GPA as normal? I'm trying to get my GPA from a 2.93 to a 3.0 by the time applications are due this year. Any advice is appreciated.
VMCAS doesn't replace. They list all courses and grades, even repeats...anything that appears on your official transcript.

On VMCAS go to the colleges attended section and select order transcript under the school you need. Select Parchment and it will give you a unique ID to copy/paste!
I saw this in January when I had my transcript sent. I need to send another one in August with my spring and summer final grades, and I no longer see that ID listed. The icons look different.

Later this summer you'll start getting emails about Academic Update, I think that will have what you need but hasn't started yet. Not entirely sure how it works because I haven't used it before

Looking for some guidance.... Trying to decide where to apply. This is my 3rd cycle. My overall GPA is quite a bit lower than I would like at a 2.9, however I will be graduating with my masters in December and right now have a graduate GPA of 3.9. I really would love to attend LMU so will definitely apply there, but don't know if everywhere else will be a waste of time. I have hours on hours of experience and the only thing holding be back is my GPA. Any suggestions on where I should look to apply with a lower GPA??

Also for a second question... when matching pre-requisites is it bad to not match a course to a pre-requisite? For example, for CSU I would still need to take Cell Biology. I don't plan on taking the course unless I absolutely have to, so do I "not match" anything to this pre-req or do I make up a random semester to "plan to take the course"? I am getting mixed answers.

Thank you 🙂

I posted in the Oregon state hopefuls but haven’t gotten a response so I wanted to check in here.

Has anyone had any issues seeing Oregon as an option for Casper testing? I’ve checked the site multiple times and Oregon isn’t coming up as an option but they require testing.
I’ve also emailed the school and gotten no response

Might want to make a post in the 'What are my chances?' sub-forum: What are my Chances? WAMC Veterinary but in short, you should be focusing on schools that weigh the last 45 heavily, even better if they don't look at your cumulative GPA at all. Take a look at Michigan State - there are multiple schools that weigh the last 45, but Michigan State is the one I'm most familiar with. Michigan also takes master's credits heavily into account iirc.

I am not sure what you mean by 'matching.' If the school in question does not require all prereqs to be completed at the time of application (some require all to be completed), you would just say when you plan to take it (ie Spring 2026). You would need to be sure you can get registered for/pass that prereq if you do get in. A lot of people are taking that gamble with at least one course remaining at the time of application honestly.

To answer the matching question, it seems like you are asking if all prerequisites are necessary. The answer is that at every school you must either have already taken or be seriously planning to take the course. You will not get accepted with a missing prerequisite if you do not complete it prior to enrolling.

This is what I am questioning. I know that a course must be taken if listed as a pre-req, but if I have not taken it yet- do I click the "I am not matching any courses to this prerequisite"? Or do I make it look as if I plan to take it in lets say Spring 2026. Obviously if I were to get an interview or accepted anywhere I would take the course if needed. I just did not know if it was an automatic rejection if you did not match a course to the prerequisite. If that makes sense lol

You make it look like it's planned. The way I look at it is that the schools need to know it will be filled. So if you don't match it or make it clear it's planned, how do they know you've got a plan? A student applied to Illinois a few cycles ago and was rejected prior to review for this very reason.

Weird, Casper wasn’t required for the class of 2029 cycle so I’m not familiar with it. I had to take it with other schools though and they sent out an email with the link. Maybe Oregon will do something similar? If there’s still radio silence it could be worth it to reach out to Casper support itself or email the school again. I feel like there is plenty of time still to take it but sorry you’re having trouble getting it out of the way!

Does anyone know how I show that my physics courses included a lab? The physics department at my school is weird about this... My physics lab and lecture are listed as separate courses with different course codes. The lecture is 4 credit hours, while the lab is listed as 0 credit hours. However, the lab grade is combined with the lecture grade, and my official transcript shows them as one course. How will the schools I'm applying to know that the lab was included if it's not clearly shown on my transcript? Any advice on how to go about this? Thanks in advance!! 🙂

I emailed Virginia-Maryland to inquire if this was absolutely required and if there was a potential for any other course to fill this need and was told yes it's required, no there is no substitute. So this school was marked off my list, because I simply do not have time in my already planned coursework to add another course and complete it by May 2026 for August 2026 admission cycle.

Same for my school. I was advised to list them exactly as they are on my transcript, so both Physics I and II are listed as 4 credit hour courses with the combined grade. Typically lectures that exclude a lab are only 3 credits.

My official transcript combines lab and lecture for all classes, despite them having different course codes for registration. It's actually a really common thing and if they see 4 credit hours they can usually infer that there was a lab. I didn't do anything beyond selecting the pre-req courses for my app last year and had no issues!

This will have more info about the first VMCAS fee waiver. I think I just had to send in a tax return. I received an email about the 2nd fee waiver a few days after my initial waiver was approved.

Hi, I'm having difficulty inputting an AP score into my transcript. I was originally going to input it under a college I sent it to, but that doesn't work out.
On the transcript, it's listed under courses that have been transferred from other institutions. It lists the course code, the name of the full course it covers, the number of credits the class is worth, and the institution from which it was transferred.

How should I input it? Should I list it under the college that states it? Is it better to make a separate transcript entry for my high school and list it there? But then I'd have to send both my high school transcript and from college board.

For AP credits, include it under the first semester at the college you transferred it to and include the course name/code it covers as stated on your official transcript. Put the grade as CR. Once you finish inputting your transcript you will be able to do "Transcript Review" and there you can designate the class as an AP class.
