Wait List Blues

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i was also pulled off the waitlist at CSU (#12) and just declined their offer yesterday. good luck to those still waiting to hear!

I haven't seen anyone say anything about Washington State University on here, but I was wondering if anyone has applied there and if anyone has any info on the status of the alternate list there....

By the way, thanks for all of the info and nice feedback on here. It has been very helpful to read. I am just a junior undergrad who applied for early admission to WSU because I have all my required credits finished and I am currently on the alternate list. It is nice to read about other people's experience and best of luck to you all.

I am living in Washington State, although I am not a Washington resident. I did apply to WSU and initially was also placed on the alternate list, but was called off it about a week after my interview. I believe that was sometime near the end of March. I declined their offer so that opened up one non-resident/non-WICHE spot.
I do not know how many alternates they typically take each year. Last year they over-enrolled their entering class so I know that this year they were much more cautious about extending admissions offers. This could bode well for the alternates out there.
As far as the school goes, I think their large animal side of things is stronger than small animal. Their small-animal caseload is not great due to location. WSU is a respectable program around here though and I have worked with lots of really great WSU grads. When I visited the school for my interview I guess I had some low expectations, but I left there really liking what I saw and the students are great! Really nice down to earth people.
If you have any other questions I didn't mention be sure to ask (not that I will necessarily know the answer). Are you from Washington? What schools are you going to?

I got the call today! I'm going to Tufts!!

Congratulations!!!!!

I am an Idaho resident and they have traditionally held open 11 spots for Idaho applicants. Since I am just a junior and was encouraged at the last minute to apply this year, WSU was the only school I applied to. I am thinking that perhaps my status as a 3rd-year undergrad may have been what put me on the waitlist. Many people, including my advisor, have told me that I have a really good chance of getting in next year if I do not get pulled off the alternate list. I have a 3.89 overall GPA and hopefully will boost that up again after this semester...I also take about 18 credits a semester of science (I am a biology and pre-vet double major) and I have decent experience working in both clinical settings and at a wildlife sanctuary as a rehabber. Those that I know of (5 of the 11) who got in this year from Idaho were fifth-year seniors who applied last year and did not get in. I am waiting to get my comments back to see what the admissions committee had to say. My interview went great. I am just wondering if perhaps I didn't get in because I am younger than the other students...I would understand this reasoning completely because if I were a fifth-year senior applying for the second time I would be a little put-off by a junior getting in over me. I am just wondering what others have to say about this....also does anyone have any good recommendations for any veterinary schools that may have a strong wildlife/conservation program?

Tufts would be #1 on that list. They have the entire conservation medicine curriculum and a wildlife clinic.

NC State has a bit of wildlife curriculum.

Cornell has the Ornithology Lab. You would have to make your own opportunities happen there as a Vet Student, but If you could develop a research project with them that would be Mucho Grande.

Colorado is another good one.

Both UPENN and TENN take care of their respective cities zoo animals and have internship opportunities. TN also has a zoological medicine PHD program.

Minnesota has the Raptor Center on the Vet Campus. Good opportunities to get some more rehab and conservation opportunities there.

Thats the extent of my knowledge thus far. Your best bet is to keep your grades high in Vet School. Get invovled in some Emerging Infectious Disease studies if possible while in school/summer jobs. And then get a Vet Internship your 4th year as a rotation. Once you get your DMV go for a Vet externship at one of the handful of rehab centers that offer them on a six month to one year basis, and then try to get residency at a zoo or similar facilities overseas.

Apparently Kansas has some guru wildlife/exotic vet there....I didn't realize that until I went to their interview session....Several of the host students and other applicants said that they specifically went/applied to Kansas b/c of this vet and his caseload etc.

Anyway...that's the grape vine I have on that one.
lol I'm kinda happy switched from wanting to do zoo/exotic/wildlife to equine......it seems like everyone wants to do exotics....

Yeah, I heard the same thing about Kansas- I asked an admissions rep from Iowa about their exotics program, and they said all they offer is an elective taught by someone from Kansas.

Minnesota has the Raptor Center, plus you can take a class at the Wildlife Rehab Center (used to be located on campus, but now it's off campus and staffed by three full-time vets). They also work with the Como Zoo, so there are opportunities for some zoo medicine, too.

Davis has a wildlife clinic too, and some electives. There's a "zoological" track which I think you could adapt to take a lot of wildlife stuff.

According to this site, two of us have called MSU to ask about the alternate thing. Both of us were told the same thing....in the past couple years, everyone has gotten an offer. Still, they will not be notifying anyone until at least April 17 (they also told me this on the phone).
When did you interview? Just curious if we perhaps met. Mine was on Feb. 17. Also, are you in or out of state?

I'm on the waitlist too and heard the same thing when I called except they said end of this week is the earliest we'd be called. Just curious...if accepted will you definetly go to MSU? Good luck...hang in there!

Yes, if accepted, I will definitely be going to Michigan. For some reason, I didn't get into Georgia (but let's not go there). Thanks for the update on MSU calling times. When they say after Apr 17, I guess most of us think that means the next day if we are next in line.....impatience, gotta love it. 😛 Good luck to you as well. I hope all of us are classmates in the end.

Hi there-- Has anyone heard of any movement on the University of Florida's waitlist? I'm sitting on it myself, still hoping for that call and getting a little worried. Ive been accepted to the University of Oklahoma, but will gladly be giving my spot up to someone on the waitlist there as soon as I hear from UF!

This thread has been really great for me. I still haven't heard anything (from Va-Md or my long shot Wisconsin) and of course think to myself, "whelp, it's all over, everyone that's going to hear has heard." But then someone posts and I'm not alone!!!

Good luck to everyone!

Pixylisa - hello fellow UF waitlister 🙂 as far as i know, the list hasn't moved...but through the grapevine, apparently there are 20 people on it, and the earliest they'd start calling people was this week, and possibly not even until May. do you go to UF? where ya from? we should meet up and have some ice cream or something, i'm sure we'll be classmates next year (i hope!!)!

do you know much about UF's waitlist? Dean Thompson told my interviewing group that in the past ten years, only one person has not been taken off the alternate list (and this has been confirmed by other people!) also, in the past three years, they have actually taken people who were *rejected* after their interview. Dean Thompson also said that he personally makes it his motto to make sure that he doesnt have anymore alternates on the list than he is 99% sure will get in. He'd rather ring up someone he rejected than tell an alternate they're not getting in. So here's hoping!

PS i also got into oklahoma! so one way or another huh?

I'm right there with you mokadet! I am becoming very impatient. I think I check this forum and my e-mail about 800 times a day! I guess all we can do is continue to wait (hopefully not all summer long 🙂 ). Good things come to those who wait, right?

Ive heard much the same thing... I hear all the great things about being on UF's waitlist, but still it sucks! I just want to know! I guess patience is the answer, thanks for the reply, good to know they probably havent started moving the list yet. One thing I did hear about this year is that they dont think there would be as many declines as in previous years, possibly because UF won the national championship in basketball and somehow that would make it a more appealing school... Sounds crazy to me, I'm not choosing my vet school based on the undergrad sports team reputation, but whatever!

That's what I heard too, and it makes me feel a little sick to my stomach, but hopefully it's not true...

I know that it is very hard to get into veterinary school as a junior, but people do it. I would be optimistic about the waitlist at WSU if I were you. Moreover, making the alternate list as a junior is quite and accomplishment and bodes well for getting in next time around if it doesn't work out this year.
A few people have mentioned Minnesota as a possibility for your wildlife interest. I really loved the program at Minnesota and it is a school that takes alot of non-residents so it would definitely be worth applying to in my opinion. Tufts wildlife center is amazing, although when I visited I got the impression that it is not terribly busy nor do the students spend much time there, but I could be completely wrong.
I'm sure you have thought of this since you have the background, but wildlife is so tough to get into that it may not necessarily be smart to pick a school just for their wildlife program. It all depends on what is most important to you. I do think there are more and more opportunities for vets to work with wildlife on a volunteer or part-time basis.
Since you are a WICHE student you should consider applying to Colorado as well (if you do need to reapply). Colorado has a great program.
Good luck with the alternate list at WSU!

I too thought that the Tufts Wildlife Center was an excellent facility. But just because it's not busy doesn't mean it's a bad thing. When things are completely crazy and a rehab facility is overloaded, triage procedures and monetary constraints can prevent some animals from getting the best care possible. So when some interesting case comes in when things are slow, doctors and staff have more time to put everything they have into rehabbing the patient. During the off-season where I volunteer, we get to see some great medicine when things are slow. From what I heard from a student I met at Tufts, the wildlife clinic is one of the more coveted spots for doing first and second-year selectives. Also, when I toured the clinic, there were at least four or five students busy with tasks late in the afternoon.

I totally agree with this. And interviewers and adcoms like this approach since it's a little more realistic for doing work with wildlife. Most of the wildlife vets I know started off as LA or SA vets and found their way to full-time positions at zoos and rehab centers.

I definitely agree, as far as wildlife is concerned in mass and surrounding states, tufts is the best. When i worked at the cape wildlife center on cape cod, we followed tufts guidelines when we could. i also agree that slow does not mean bad, but I highly doubt that it's slow. also, my interviewers as well as dr. pokras (the head of the wlidlife clinic) said that students can spend lots of time there if they want to, not just on selective rotations. either way, if you're seriously into wildlife, tufts has a lot more to offer than most schools (cornell for example, the wildlife clinic shares a small room in the SA hospital with the exotics ward, and i never saw more than 4-5 animals there at a time)

Hi Everyone,

I can't believe how late I found this forum....there so much awesome info on here.

I'm currently on two wait list: MSU and IL.

It's so nerve wrecking :scared: but it's good to know that everyone here is so supportive and informative.

Good luck to all of us!

Here's a question for all of you alternates...

What are you doing about finding housing and signing leases, etc?

As you may remember, I'm an alternate at VA-MD and Wisconsin. I've now been convinced by a friend that is definitely going to VA-MD next year that I should move to Blacksburg (where VA-MD is located) if I don't get in to Wisconsin (really the only reason I'd go anywhere but Blacksburg is if I got in to Wisconsin and not in to VA-MD). We went down to look at housing options last week to get a feel for what's available and there isn't much left. We are now scared to wait much longer to sign a lease for fear that there will not be anything left that we really like/in our price range/in the location we want. However, this make me even more nervous b/c I talked to Wisconsin and I'm #66 on their list - yes, pretty high, but they said they have taken up to 85 before. I know it will be just my luck that I will sign a lease in BBurg and then the next day get a call from Wisconsin, erg.

Basically, my questions are these... Are you guys finding housing where you are most likely to be and then dealing with issues later? Are you just not doing anything until you are sure? Can you ever get out of a lease or would I just have to find someone to sub-let from me?

Most places will let you break a lease, but it may cost you all of the rent for the leftover time (or more). Talk to your buddy and find out the details of the lease agreement.

As for me, I'm just pre-planning right now. I read the orientation info and have marked the important dates. I keep my folks informed as to those dates and we have tentative plans for making a trip up to East Lansing (look at housing, show them around) should I get a call. In the meantime, I'm going to give it a month or so and then look further into alternate plans in case I don't get a call. It is tough though, since Mich St. told us there is a good chance everyone on the list will get in.
I cannot do anything rash because I am employed full time. I just keep hoping that things will work out, but this loss of control is agonizing!

Currently I'm holding off on the housing until I know for sure where I'll be. I'll either be in Ames, IA or Perth, Western Australia. I'm on the alternate list at Iowa State and I've been accepted to Murdoch University for Feb. 07. So, I'm going to wait to see if I get in to Iowa this year and if I do I'll find housing there. If I don't get in there, its off to Australia for me. I guess if I were you, I'd wait. It's not worth getting yourself tied up somewhere when your plans aren't concrete yet. Usually, there are places that you can find in a short time frame and you may be able to find something with a short lease period to get you thru until you find something more permanent. The last thing you want is to be paying two rents because you jumped the gun. That's just my two cents!

I live in Roanoke area, and I find it really hard to believe that there's nothing left in Blacksburg. I've yet to meet someone who goes to VT (either as an undergrad or grad) who had trouble finding housing. Especially with the school year about to end and students moving out. Are you sure you've exhausted all the possibilities? Have you talked to Mrs. Massie about the housing list? You may also consider expanding your radius a bit... I know a third-year who lives in Elliston (about 10 miles up the road, I think). It would suck to have a 30+ minute drive to school, but that may be your only option.

At any rate, good luck with both the wait list and housing!

Wow - a whole ten miles! Invest in a bike - get a workout in before class.

BTW, How can it possibly take you 30+ mins to get to school - if your only 10 miles away. Unless your off-roading it - Its not going to happen.

I think you ppl need to stop being a bunch of ******* (jk). Your "in" vet school - be happy.

On that note - have a glorious day.

Don't be sarcastic. First of all, it could very well take you 30 minutes from point A to point B, depending on where in Elliston you are in relation to VT. Especially in morning traffic. "10 miles up the road" refers to the interstate exits, which is the best approximation I can offer.

Second of all, that particular town was simply a suggestion. I was saying that *other viable options* might realistically be 30 minutes away. And besides... when you're (a contraction of "you are" as opposed to your which indicates possession of an item) in class all day and study time is precious, a 30-minute drive each way is not a good thing.

It's true that there is plenty of housing. The issue is that there is not much left that is what we want. And it's hard to pass up something that is "perfect" (the right area, the right size, the right price) on the off chance that I get in to Wisconsin.

Also, we both have cats and like most areas this cuts your options by at LEAST a half.

Haha. Thank you for the grammar lesson. This is a message board - You need to relax.

Secondly, Morning traffic? I do hope you realize your in the middle of nowhere.

Cheers.

Anyway,

Tufts is a great school? Are you excited? When do classes start? Im still in limbo Im afraid. Still waiting for the call or email or snail mail.

Hey, if you're going to criticize my math/geography skills, then I get to criticize your grammar. 😛

As for "the middle of nowhere"...That stretch of I-81 is one of the most dangerous in VA, and because of this you never know when you're going to hit stand-still traffic thanks to a wreck because of some fool rushing to wherever they're supposed to be at 8am. It's busier than you think!

Yes, I'm very excited about Tufts. I have no idea when classes start or when I'm supposed to be there or when I'm going to move in or where I live, but I do know that I'm going to be in debt for the rest of my life BUT I'm going to a great school and I'll be enjoying what I'm doing. So it sorta evens out in the end 😀

To those of you who called admissions offices to figure out where you were... How did you phrase your question? I haven't received any updates from Minnesota about where I'm sitting, and it's driving me crazy, but I don't know what I'd say if I called them. I know I am supposed to hear sometime in May, but but but... I don't wanna wait!

It depends how helpful the admin office is going to be. I don't have experience with Minnesota and don't know what their policy is on giving you info.

When I called VA-MD and just asked if they could give me any updates. They of course gave me a really vauge answer and I was more confused when I got off the phone. On the other hand, I called Wisconsin expecting the same run around and as soon as I said my name and that I'm an alternate she said, "OK, let me pull up your file and I'll tell you were you are..." I didn't have to ask her for anything at all!

Good luck!

waiting for news from UF is seriously, *KILLING* me!

i get conflicting information from their admissions office, and from current students who have crazy "announcements" made in class about when alternate letters are getting sent out, which results in crazy gossip and uncertainty and dyingness in people who are waiting to hear. why does UF take forever to do everything??

So sorry!!! :-( I really hate this waitlist business, and sitting on acceptances is ****ty but I didnt get this far to just end up waiting for another year you know? I'm glad you got it, in the end 🙂 At least the OK waitlist (and every other one for that matter!) seems to actually *move* UF's is *not* moving at all! The reason they have been giving for this is basically that they dont "feel like" moving it yet :-/

Sorry again :-(

A 15 minute drive to blacksburg can easily be a 20mile drive. Which can equate to a 45 minute-1hour commute in a metropolitan area.

Don't worry...I think everyone here understands and/or would do the same...especially if you're waiting on your state school....In all honesty I really think the schools could handle this stuff a lot better....especially if they communicated with one another and tried to be on the same time line...there really isn't any good reason why this has to take so long.

Good luck.

Wee! I called the Dean at the U of M and found out that I have moved up to 3 from 14. There's still a whole summer to go! Wish me luck 🙂
