Skipping a year?
Can I ask trinity to do that for me?! (4 years instead of 5) Because I will be with high school grads in class. Can't they count some of my undergrad courses?
No, you more than likely can't.
RCSI and UCD offer a pre-med year (6 year programme), however in some cases you can slip this, and you will be offered the 5 year programme, going straight into first med. If you've completed an undergrad degree, then you will skip pre-med more than likely. However, that being said, if you have already completed an undergraduate degree, then you should really apply for the GEM programme (4 years)
In contrast, TCD *only* offer a 5 year programme, straight into first med. They don't have pre-med, and they don't have GEM. Therefore, you can't skip the first year, or any year. (I'll caveat thism saying that there may be some exceptional circumstances). However, if you have done say, a biochem or physiology degree, then you may be exempted from those modules in TCD. This is not the case in RCSI or UCD, as they offer a systems-based approach, so there are no individual biochem or physiology modules.
I can't really speak for UCC or NUIG, however they would be more similar to RCSI and UCD I imagine, particularly NUIG.

i'll be matriculating into RCSI's GEP this coming fall too! I'm hoping to go to Dublin a few weeks early to find accommodations etc. I was told daft.ie was the best way to go as far as looking for housing. I'd love to get in touch with anyone who will be starting GEP in the fall, especially if you are considering an apartment mate.

UCC moved to a systems based approach 5 years ago for the 5 year program so that was the end of the good times, aka exemptions for people who had done similar course work in North America. It was nice while it lasted; I got over 5000 euro back in 1st year and about the same in 2nd year. I would have got money back in 3rd and 4th if the school hadn't stated sooo emphatically that no exemptions would be granted after 2nd year; I later found out that colleagues got exemptions in 3rd and 4th year and there were certainly courses I could have missed in those years (ethics and art history, among other things).
So, to sum up, no, you can't skip a whole year and unless your school has individual modules in those subjects, you can't get exemptions. Cheers,
M

In the 5 year program at UCD, you will be able to obtain exemptions from certain courses if you had already taken a course with similar content. You won't be able to skip a year so do the 4 year GEP if you can.

Hey guys,

So, ABP contacted me and they said that I have a package from Galway! I am super excited and happy! I wanted to know if anyone on here knows about the National University of Galway and could tell me what they have heard of it? Any information would be helpful. It is a big decision to go away to Ireland for 5 years and I want to make sure it is the right school for me...

Thanks,
Katie

Galway is a beautiful city, and the university there is comparable to UCC and UCD. They are all part of the National University of Ireland, so they have similar standards. The one Canadian I knew who went there loved it and matched back to Canada. Cheers,
M

Congratulations Katie.

How did you find out from ABP that you had a package? Did you just straight up call them? I have yet to hear anything from any of the programs in Ireland.

When in doubt, just call the ABP and they will give you real time acceptances, rather than waiting for processing/shipping of letters

Thanks for the follow up Pepsicola!

Btw, Pepsi > Coke

Yeah,

I just straight up called them. They are really friendly on the phone. Peter Nealon is super nice.

I haven't heard anything from anyone yet. No rejections, no wait lists, no interviews. It's so late already, I'm assuming that's a bad sign but I'm confused as to why I haven't even had rejection letters (if that is what is coming my way).

If you get rejection letters, they won't be until now - the summer. Most schools have ongoing rounds of offers. Last offers could be as late as September.

Unfortunately, it's a waiting game.

For interviews, only RSCI and UL holds them. Both have been picked. RSCI *sometimes* holds a second round, but not guaranteed. If you haven't heard anything from them, you're likely not accepted there.

The other schools you're still on the list until you hear otherwise.

Its pissing me off actually, 6 irish schools & I am still waiting for a response.
No acceptance,
No Rejection,
No anything...
