Waitlist movement c/o 2020

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just found this thread. I got waitlisted at UGA (my IS) which is a great improvement for me after being straight out rejected the first three times.

Last cycle I got waitlisted at Western U and actually got accepted off the waitlist but declined my offer due to distance and tuition costs.

I'm hoping and praying I can get in to UGA if not this cycle, hopefully next year. Anyone else UGA alternate?

Hey everyone. I need some advice. I'm wait listed at two schools. At this point, I've already started looking for jobs since I'm not going to put my life on hold on the chance of getting off those wait lists. I'm wondering if I should let my potential employers know that I am waiting to hear back from schools and that I have a possibility of leaving the job soon after I get hired. I feel like the right thing to do is tell them, but then again I really need a job 😛. Has anyone have this experience before? The schools I'm waitlisted at do not tell you your ranking, so I can't even gauge whether or not I have a good chance at getting accepted somewhere.
I am kind of in the same shoes as you. The prospect of a move is never a good motivator for new employers but I hate being dishonest. So I would tell them that there is a very slim chance that you are going to be moving come mid August, that way they aren't surprised if you get the phone call everyone is waiting on lol. That is a hard one! I hate this waiting game. Hopefully you will know by the end of this month

I wouldn't put your life on hold. Find something great that makes you happy.
I was interviewing for a position I really liked and was very qualified for, but was told because I had applied to vet school he wasn't going to hire me. He said he wanted someone long term. I pointed out that I could not get in this cycle and I would still be there a year at least- even if I did get in. He said he thought I was such a strong candidate that I would surely get in... Although I was flattered I was so sad I didn't get the position. And now I am wait listed and with little hope (low down on the IS list). But there is a bright side! I have 2 jobs I LOVE!!!
So telling them is up to you. They should hire you because your right for the job, not based on your short/long term goals. People go and come all the time. It is the dynamic of life's. I would tell them you want to be a vet one day, but not necessarily disclose your uncertainties. Just tell them what you know.

Hope this helps!

I accepted a job June 1 2015. A month later I got accepted to western off the waitlist. I was so confused and happy at the same time. I did tell my current employer during my interview that I had been waitlisted but that its nearly impossible to get off the waitlist and if I didn't get in I wasn't going to try again, but lo and behold, I did but decided not to go. So for now, I've got a great job with good pay and benefits. The down side is, I'm 2-3 hours from my boyfriend and family.

AND, I'm not loving this job as much as I thought I would so I've been kinda looking for something else and one job I applied for did flat out tell me they wouldn't hire me if I'm planning on going to vet school.

It just depends what you want and what you're willing to pay (literally) for it.

I would go with the worst possible scenario. That is, you don't get off either waitlist. Your employers do not need to know that you are waiting on admission until YOU are told you were for sure, definitely accepted. I did have a prospective employer tell me that I wasn't hired because I was waiting on vet school admission and they wanted someone long term. Don't let waiting for an acceptance hold you back, because there is no guarantee.

Thanks everyone! I'm still unsure about what to do. Certain life events (2 deaths in the family, one unexpected, and a total house remodel gone wrong) has recently made me in need for some serious cash. It would usually be a no brainer for me to disclose about my situation, but I feel like I can't because of my current money situation. Thankfully I'm not at the point in which I would be happy for any jobs YET... I've applied/will apply for 3 Vet Assistant jobs, and I'm hoping to get hired at one of them (potentially long-term if I don't get in anywhere this cycle). But I just feel like even if I were hired and started this month, 3-4 months is a pretty short time to work somewhere if I get accepted and decide to attend. I guess I'll feel bad since I understand the hassle of hiring/training someone completely again 🙁

I am on the WesternU waitlist this year! I'm from CA, so I feel like even if I was taken off late, I would still potentially go.

yes, I'd imagine being from cali would make the distance issue much easier but as it's a private college, unfortunately tuition would be the same 🙁

I couldn't justify moving across the country for that long and for what I'd be in debt when I finished, but really best of luck to you.

How many times have you applied?

Don't let waiting for an acceptance hold you back, because there is no guarantee.

The whole uncertainty of everything is also something I'm really worried about. (I'm sure most people here feel the same). If only employers were understanding of this too 😛

This is my first time applying. I don't think I will apply again until the 2022 cycle if I don't get accepted. I have areas of my app I know I can improve.

Yeah Western's tuition makes me want to crawl in a hole and cry. But cost would be the same (if not slightly more) at the other school I'm waitlisted to, which is OOS. At least I would not have to factor in traveling, room/board (planning to live with family members for first 2 years), and some food costs if I were attending Western.

Oh man, first time? You did great to get waitlisted! If I don't get off the waitlist, next cycle will be my 5th time applying!

Soooooo, I got a job at a vet clinic where they're totally understanding - nay, supportive - of people going back to school. They're completely understanding of the fact that I may go away in August if I get accepted off the waitlist, and they'd also be overjoyed if I had to apply again and stayed with them until the next August. To be perfectly honest, this situation is a rarity in my experience. In my last job in the research industry, several of my coworkers left to go back to graduate school and the reception from management was formal, if not chilly. It might have been them and not me, however, as when I told my manager that I was leaving to go back to graduate school, I spared her the ordeal of having to let me go due to budget cuts.

I'd keep it close to the vest, unless your place of employment openly supports people going back to school. A lot of businesses say they support people getting their education, but the reality is quite different.

I sincerely admire ya'll and everyone on the SDN forums so much. Even though I've never met any of you (or maybe I have unknowingly....😉), I swear everyone on here are some of the most dedicated and passionate people that I've "met". It definitely gives me motivation to never give up. I'm glad I have all of you to ask questions to and for unbiased advice, without fear of being judged. I don't have a large support team where I live right now, and I feel like talking to my friends and family (even though they mean well), they just give the "yes man" type attitude and agree with everything I say since they don't know much about what it takes to become a vet. I get a lot of pressure from my family, not necessarily them pushing me to achieve anything, but I think they think I'm a lot smarter/talented/wise/etc. than I really am:hungover: (You should've seen my poor mom's face when I told her I wasn't accepted anywhere, just waitlisted! She thought it would be a no-brainer getting into vet school!).

Okay ya'll. Cheese fest over. Let's all continue on with our day now 😛😛😛

I love your perseverance!!! Teach me your ways!

Believe you me, it hasn't been easy. I could fill an ocean with all the tears I've cried over this agonizing journey but I'm hoping one day soon it will be worth it. I always said I wouldn't apply more than 3 times and I really was going to stick to that....until I got accepted to western off the waitlist then I HAD to try again and now I'm waitlisted once more, so only time will tell

That is really awesome that they were understanding (are they hiring? 😛)! It's hard to gauge whether a business is supportive of continuing education if you don't know them that well or at all :\ Like you said, they may say something, and mean the complete opposite. I have known a friend who did not get hired at a research lab because she said she planned on applying to school again "in the future" (didn't even give them specifics!). Life is just a game of luck and chance right?

It has definitely been difficult. There have been many nights where I lay in bed questioning everything I have done in my life so far. Or. Maybe I shouldn't have been a cheerleader in college? My GPA would've been better. Maybe I should have applied out of state years ago. What if I never become a vet? Etc. but then I have to refocus and become more hard headed. I don't know who I would be if I gave up my dream because I have needed to be a veterinarian since kindergarten. I know that a lot of people feel the same way but to come so close but still be so far is devastating and very disheartening. This forum has helped so much because then I see hat I am not alone and that there is still hope. Keep your chin up and reach out when you needs and remember there is no shame in being heartbroken when you don't get in. It just means that you still care and that you are still meant to do this.

we're like the same person! I've wondered if this is what I'm supposed to be doing, but then I think, why would I have such drive and passion if it wasn't?

I'm now working a job that has NOTHING to do with veterinary medicine (i'm a county extension agriculture agent) and its SSSOOOO boring. I spend my days in corn, cotton, and peanut fields, so I think sometimes you have to take little detours just to show yourself that being a vet is worth it and you don't have to settle for something just to get by

You are all are so inspiring. I am trying to keep my cool, getting pulled from the waitlist is my only hope. Luckily, I was able to score an amazing summer job. I am worried even if I apply again my application won't have improved enough. It is such a hard place to be in. I fight every day to not feel like a failure.

well I'm WAY past the point of retaking classes. I've got a masters and still can't get accepted, so I'm planning on taking the GRE again in august and maybe volunteer/shadow on the weekends, all while working my full time job 😵

Lol sounds familiar. I work as a vet tech right now and it has reaffirmed this is the field I need to be in but I want to be the doctor not "just a tech." I am being totally tongue in cheek. But hopefully we both get good news soon!

So no spots were taken at my IS today. There's 3 left with 10 days to confirm your spot. since there will be 9 alternates at most, if no spots get claimed, 1/3 is not bad odds... Hmm...

Except we don't know how many Kansas State spots are left? Unless you're talking about a different school. Plus I believe even with Dr. Elmore telling us we're high on the list, that can't guarantee anything more than top 20 considering I believe they have at least 100 on the alternate list. If you have anything to make me feel better since I've heard the same as you from Dr Elmore, by all means please share!!

Is anyone else flip flopping between "Well, I will just have to apply again. It will be okay." and "I think I have a really good shot! I'm so excited!"? This constant change of emotion is really taking a toll on me. Can I just sedate myself for the next month?

Yes! Me! In the same boat.

Honestly I worry I'm overconfident in my chances because of Dr. Elmore's emails from Kansas State telling me twice now that he's optimistic that he'll be offering me a seat. Especially since the last email was sent to me March 18th. I know I need to consider that I won't be accepted, but he's definitely put a lot of hope in my head.

I'm assuming I'm not getting in off the waitlist. UGA's IS waitlist only moved 2 spots last year and there is no way I'm in the 1 or 2 spot. I've already registered to retake the GRE...and rethinking what I can put in my personal statement for next cycle

I'm definitely realistic about the other two wait lists I'm on. It's highly unlikely I will receive calls for either of those. I'm listed for UPenn and Tufts and they rarely move more than a couple spots if at all. But I feel that I'll likely hear from Kansas State

I was just going off the statistics they have on their website where 331 people were granted interviews and 206 were offered a spot and since we got an interview obviously, we have about a 60% chance of getting an offer based off those stats. But you are right we don't know where we are on the list or how many seats are even open. I wanted to email them and ask how many OOS seats are open at this time but I don't want to be impatient and I don't think they would tell us.

I hate being blind sided about not knowing your spot on the list, personally I think that really sucks! My most likely option I feel is Illinois cause Florida is my IS if it was my OOS id have s better chance. I've been told by multiple people Illinois list moves but ugh i am trying to be hopeful but not overly confident

They are! Wanna move to North Carolina? 😉

Life is funny. I get mad at the trend in employment that I see where large companies complain about not having enough skilled/educated workers and then don't actually support employees who want to become skilled or educated. Like, somebody's got to break the cycle.

So... I've been a LONG time troller if you will of this site.... But I've never joined or anything until now. This is my third time applying and I am on two waitlist for school and was accepted over seas at Ross. I have decided to turn down the offer at Ross due to distance and the total student loan debt I would be in after finishing.... made me want to puke. I am IS for KSU and I'm on the waitlist for 2020 as well as for Western U. I love both schools and desperately want to get off one of these lists. I am finishing up my Masters this year and feel like this is my real last shot. Reading everyone's post does give me hope but I am still freaking out over the possibility of not being accepted. I haven't even looked at signing a lease for an apartment in Manhattan due to the fact I may get pulled for Cali... Its so stressful! lol

I definitely don't think this is your last chance if this is only your third year. I know someone that applied 7 times before they got in. But I get how disappointing and stressful this all is. This is my fourth year getting told no at my IS school and first year on a waitlist. This waitlist thing sucks! You don't know which way to go because you are still hopeful but you want to be realistic... YUCK!

Ive never even considered applying to ross or any of the other island schools. I know several people that have gone/are currently attending over there but the fact that'd I'd be in a different country freaks me out! And since I turned down my acceptance at western due to distance, it wouldn't make sense to even apply to ross since the plane ride is about the same amount of time :/

I got an job interview for a vet assistant position tomorrow for a small clinic near my home! I'm still unsure whether or not I should let them know I'm on a waitlist for school. My family told me to tell them only if they asked about it, but I'm still on the fence.... Ughh this is stressing me out! Does anyone have any tips for job interviews? If I were hired, this would be my first *real* (ie. paid) job in a vet clinic.

I would tell them if they ask about it, like your parents stated. I have been a veterinary technician for 5 years now my biggest tip would be to be yourself and tell them about your passions in the field. Since you don't have any assistant experience in the past inform them on your quick learning skills, your communications skills and people skills pretty much. Anything that can fit into vet med. if you have had handling experience in the past that's great to bring up as well since they know you have at least been around the animal other than your own pet

I have been a vet tech for 4 years now. Definitely tell them you are a pre-veterinary student and that you are looking for hands on experience in the field. Be honest about what you have done. Also see if you could do a working interview. That way they can see what you are capable of. When you do the interview be ready to do anything and don't be afraid to ask for help! Good luck

Also try to sit down with the veterinarian... They tend to be more sympathetic toward your plait and the need for experience

Thank you everyone. I really appreciate it! 🙂

I wasn't sure we're to put this exactly, but since you guys understand my wait list situation, I thought I would ask for advice here. My chances are very low getting off my IS wait list I am in the mid-late teens on the wait list. I am trying to decide whether to work another (3rd)year when applying next year or if I should do something different. My ultimate goal is to end up as faculty. I love research, teaching and patient care. It terrifies me because it is so much schooling and I already feel like I am off to a late start.
I was recently offered a graduate position (I'd probably go big or go home - so PhD) with a huge name in the industry I love and want to be in. So it seems like a no brainier, but I am concerned about starting vet school so late in life after doing grad school after working a few years out of undergrad. I know it's silly. I respect the hell out of people who decide to go for vet med in their 30's and 40's. It just feels so different making the decision to put off applying to vet school for 5 years. I really had envisioned my self trying a PhD DVM combo to lessen the time, but I have heard you don't really get enough time to focus on either. So do I do a PhD for 5 years, apply for vet school for another 4 and then residency after that? I know I have big dreams, they terrify me, but I just need some different perspectives on this.
Eek! This was a curve ball I didn't expect. My boss just sat down at my desk and asked when I would know about the wait list stuff. Then she offered me a graduate position. I feel like I was hallucinating... It was so surreal and I didn't expect it at all! What do I do? Pros, cons?

Your short or long term goals have an influence on what the company can/wants to do with you as an employee. Yeah, a cashier at Wal-Mart isn't a huge deal as they do have high turn over just from the nature of the job. But a vet assistant at a privately own two doctor hospital is a significant investment on the part of the company in time training you and money.

I'm all about people on the wait list getting on with their lives. Been there, done that for two years. But you have to understand the company isn't going to consider what you need when they don't know who you are and when they have other employees to think about.

Yeah... That was definitely not phrased right on my part. Sorry about that. I completely agree. I guess what I was going for was you can tell them you plan on vet school, but I wouldn't necessarily disclose the uncertainties in life. We never know what opportunities pop up or don't. Life leads uncertain paths, but we have to put ourselves first in the moment with what we know. Mind you, I disclosed that I was wait listed to my most recent jobs and they were totally cool with it. But I have seen it hurt people's chances. But maybe they will find something better in the long run.

Just talked to the recruiter from WSU today, while she was at my campus and she said that it was very unlikely they would be taking any students off of the WA waitlist.

I am sorry to hear that 🙁 Do you have any schools yet to hear from?
