Got a call from the admissions office of a school I’m WL at, left a voicemail asking to talk about my application. *thinking “obviously this is an acceptance”. calls back*
“Hi, Welshman, we just wanted to know if you were still interested in remaining on our waitlist”

I hope you told them "yes, of course!" They probably want to know if you're truly interested.

I'm sorry that it's not an acceptance (yet), but I would think that being called by the Admissions Committee to see if you are still interested is a really great sign! The fact that a member of the Admissions Committee took the time to personally call you can definitely indicate that something great will happen soon!

Do they have any prior watlist movement? All those people could still be given time to decide then. I've also heard of some schools giving people an extension for withdrawing past the 30th but I don't know how common that it

Same thing is happening at the school in waitlisted at. I wonder what is going on.

The AAMC, in its infinite wisdom, decided to hold a GSA meeting in Orlando from April 28-May 1. This meeting was exceptionally well attended because the AAMC, in its infinite wisdom, is ramming through a bunch of unwelcome changes to the application process and folks are up in arms. Hence, waitlist movement has been slow because the admissions deans were all busy rioting in central Florida.

There was a thread about this posted elsewhere so I thought I’d quote helpful things to here. We just have to be patient we’ll know when we know and there’s nothing we can do about it. I know it’s excruciating and painful and there’s little joy in life; however, we need to occupy ourselves. Play video games and go outside. Take your spouse on a date. Do something other than wallow in self pity that **** isn’t healthy

It's extremely fickle but last year I think they picked around 30-35 people off waitlist and the year before that hardly anyone was picked. They waitlist 35-50 people a year.

Something like 99% of schools extend more acceptances than seats. I can’t think of any off the top of my head that don’t, except the two new schools Carle Illinois and the new school in California. The trick for most schools is figuring out the sweet spot - extending enough acceptances that once people withdraw, you don’t have to go through the waitlist, vs extending too many and having too many enrollees (some schools have been known to give students scholarships for waiting a year to matriculate), vs extending too few and having to pull from rejected students (some schools have even had to do this). Waitlist management is purported to be a nightmare, so most schools avoid taking too many students off the waitlist if they can.

This cycle may have just been extremely competitive, I’m waiting on a lower tier state school as well and have only seen 1 acceptance reported on the thread.

Well, about that. I'm calling to say...good news! After being turned down by literally hundreds of other students we preferred over you, you are lookin' mighty gooood. So, if you're not doing anything right now, wanna come over?" 😍
 
I'm not going to lie, though. There's at least one school I would go crawling back to if they suddenly contacted me to say they made a mistake, LOL.

I guess that's why schools waitlist SO many people. To minimize the risk of ever having to pull from the rejection pile.

Yeah, it's scary that there is a possibility of the large and silent "non-SDN majority" cohort getting acceptances like wildfire these past few days and us just being blind to it:depressed:

That’s usually a positive sign! It can mean that their trying to shorten their list(which gives you better odds if you stay) or it could mean that they are looking at you specifically and considering offering you an acceptance soon!

Hang in there!! Depending on the school, a "do you still want to be on the wailtlist?” email could mean that good news is coming soon. -fingers crossed- for you :xf:

Maybe some schools are waiting to hold a committee meeting in the next week or so before admitting people off the waitlist?

Ya it sounds like in the upcoming years, we’re gonna see more stringent rules being put in places concerning acceptances and schools knowing where you’ve been accepted

I thought most committees stopped meeting after March (maybe that’s only for the ranked lists)?

Yes and no. Looks like most people missed the point here. Basically because of the systematic overhaul of subsequent cycles, AAMC admins and school adcoms have tons of details to work through. So they have had this meeting in Orlando that just ended this week, where most adcoms were in attendance. This meant that most schools were sorta understaffed right in traffic day, which meant that the WL movement was slower simply because the majority of the attention was in the meeting instead of the WL groups.
