Is there any reason why schools can't tell us where we are ranked on the wait list? I am on two wait lists that are ranked. However, they will not say where you are on the wait list. I think it would be helpful for all of us if we knew where we stood on the wait list. It is just very stressful hoping to be pulled off when you don't even know where you are. If I knew where I was, I would be able to only focus on the next cycle and have a a realistic picture of my chances of getting taken off the wait list.

I agree. Currently sitting on two waitlists. I interviewed at both schools almost a full year ago.... very frustrating.

Transgender is not a protected class under civil rights act, so it sucks and you can't do anything about it unless the institution higher ups want to act upon it. Sorry to hear that.

I'm more than aware of that. Everyone is telling me to report it and I am like... to who? I have reported all the time but nothing ever gets done. Why should I be surprised?

There will come a day when this won't happen...

However, it will probably not happen until our generation is in leadership positions.

Is there a logical reason why though?

Like the fact that half the country was shut down and many people cancelled interviews at schools they were less likely to attend?

I don't know I am just trying to figure it out so I could feel better about myself.
I can think of several possible reasons but none that I can support with evidence.

Not that I know of.

Although thinking about it more, shouldn't it be under 'sex' category of the protected class?

A handful of cases have ruled that way for male-to-female on the basis that because the person was a WOMAN that the discrimination occurred. Haven't yet seen a case where female-to-male won a case.

Being transgender is considered a mental illness like being gay used to be. We aren't even allowed to serve in the military.

I will state I am completely cool with theories. No, seriously.

+1 to this
It has been especially bad this year on the wait list front. I know a few schools that have only taken a handful of people from the wait list up until now.

From a premed, my only theory is that there is a lot more qualified applicants than years before and schools accepting applicants aren't overlapping as much anymore with their acceptances. Looking back, I wish there were a lot more applicants with 8+ acceptances that gyngyn was referring to so that there could've been tons of movement.

Every year more schools are buying and using proprietary software that allows for more efficient assessment of application and acceptance data. As schools are better able to analyze their target population of interviewees and who is likely to matriculate, the more precise their acceptance algorithm becomes. The more precise the algorithm, the less reliance on the waitlist.

That's just... crazy. Kind of like being in the Matrix.

Many thought the opening of new medical schools in the past couple of years would make things easier, not harder.

Welp... USC seems like they're clearing out their waiting list.... I should be down to 1 WL soon....

It officially looks like this cycle is over for me without any acceptances as neither waitlist looks promising. I talked to the head of admissions of a school I was rejected by and the most frustrating thing is that there were no red flags in my application. It simply was that there are far more qualified applicants than there are spots. I guess the take away lesson is to not take rejection personally. I have decided to sit this cycle out and reapply for matriculation in 2016, but it is annoying to think that I have to put my dream on hold for two years. Hopefully my next application cycle goes completely differently, but I am not giving up this easily.

I am exactly in your boat, man. Really don't want to put it off for two years.
Fall 2016 better get ready for us though!

Climbing on board that boat with you guys, only 1 waitlist, and not optimistic about its movement. Setting sail for next year's cycle. Probably gonna retake the mcat in between before the new test comes out.

My twin bro just retook his mcat last month, and got a 36! He's going for this cycle. Makes me optimistic in a way (we both got a 31 our first sitting) and sad that we'll very likely be parting ways soon.

They're wasting their money, they don't need software to know that there's a 100% chance I'd matriculate...😉

It's interesting to think that in a perfect world, there would be no waitlists. Only clear acceptances and rejections.

The sad thing is that this process is pretty far from perfect. So much of applying seems to be up to random chance, and the process seems way drawn out when it could and should be consolidated. People are still teetering on the waitlist right before applying for next year starts up again. That being said we are all willing to play the game given that this is a future career at stake.

If this is just a theory, this is an awesome one.

I could get behind this as actually being the reason.

I heard the same things from schools I was waitlisted at.

I am going to be submitting my round four this week. I just rewrote my personal statement today after rewriting every other essay I have.

I'm sorry to hear that. You are an amazing person and applicant, and will get in.

Are the schools who send you these waitlist updates public or private? I don't hear anything from the ones I'm waiting on, and am starting to feel anxious.

Hey, you're awesome. I really hope this cycle goes well for you.

Thanks.

I can apply to whatever I can do for $500 including interview costs and then someone from SDN said they would "sponsor" me if I applied to a specific school so that one is on the list. It will be the only OOS school. Definitely the two schools I am waitlisted on are going to be applied to again. I am going to work out if I can afford another school once we are closer to verification and I have time to figure out exactly what the costs are to do each school gas/hotel wise so I know how much I can waste on another school.

Thank you. I appreciate it.

I apply to both public and private.

Two weeks ago I had a meeting with the dean of a school where I am waitlisted, that is a private school. She said there are no red flags in my application. Positions on the waitlist are literally coming down to thousandths of a point.

Last year, I heard similar from a public school. Not much in the way of red flags outside of the fact I seem a little nervous. I really wanted to say "No way! You force super caffeinated coffee down our throats to the point all of us are vibrating," but I didn't. ;-) This year I took less coffee and took a sedative with it to counter act the coffee. I normally don't drink coffee at all. This year, same school, no red flags and I was complimented on my interview.

Aaack. I'm sorry to hear that too - the system is just overwhelmed with qualified applicants now, I guess?

Is this your fourth time applying?

Yes it's my fourth round applying.

Yes I applied to Yale in round 2.

I also applied DO in round 1 and international in round 3.
Dude, good luck. You deserve this more than anyone. I really really hope it works out for you.

I spoke to my top choice right now and they told me my MCAT could use some improvement and that I need more upper level science courses. Despite the fact I have a masters of science degree and a bachelors of science. I am really confused.

Wow, grasping at straws much? It's such bullsh*t, I'm sorry.

Well I have no reason to think they are completely BSing me. I've had more than a few people say to rework on that MCAT and the fact my BS and MS were not standard premed sciences might hurt me.

Why do schools even interview people they have no intention of accepting? Clearly if your MCAT is deficient, as well as your course work, they shouldn't have wasted your time and money by interviewing you in the first place.

What's funny is they've interviewed and waitlisted me TWICE after rejecting me my first round.

I am at the point of just laughing hysterically right now.

If insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result am I the insane one or is the committee?

That seems really unfair and I'm sorry to hear that. From my understanding, if you're waitlisted, you're qualified to be admitted. It's just that there are more qualified applicants. It seems like they're just trying to give you some illogical reasons as to why you haven't been accepted.

I heard from a current student at GW that they are overenrolled for this coming year and that they are actually asking individual students to defer a year. @gyngyn any truth to this?

This happens every year to at least a couple schools.

They also said it as not uncommon to have people apply to their school 5 cycles in a row.

So by that logic, I still have a few more cycles to go.

Did you not get into international schools or did you just decide against going?

Did not get in. Was rejected like Jan 29 2014 or something.

I asked top choice if they could possibly explain why that happened (they had mentioned international) and they said they could not venture a guess at all.
