Waitlist survivors! c/o 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
oh luplodw I thought you had gotten in off a waitlist after seeing you post in both "waitlist survivors" AND in "successful applicant stats"!! grrrr

Unfortunately, KSU says they won't start notifying until after April 15th, so I guess I'll be waiting for a while to possibly hear...

But maybe some acceptances will come before then? :xf:

Figure I can't be the first person this year to be called off a waitlist, can I?

VMRCVM: GreennWhite (call 2/24)

Yay, GreennWhite!!! I hope you'll accept the offer... Blacksburg is amazing! (Well except for days like today when there are 60 mph wind gusts...)

Congratulations!!! Are you a MD resident and IS?

yep - I'm probably going to VMRCVM and hope I get a little better vibe the second time visiting it - still crossing my fingers for Michigan State, but doubtful.

Congrats on getting off the waitlist! 😀😀😀😀👍👍👍👍

May I ask what day you interviewed? I interviewed on the day one of the big storms came in and it disrupted the schedule considerably. I didn't get the greatest vibe either and I wonder how much of it was due to circumstances. On the other hand, I do know a few faculty members and students plus tons of grads and have had mostly a positive experience with them. Of course, this is from someone who is still undecided between Va and Missouri...

I interviewed friday at noon (well...technically later...). My hesitancy is a combination of a whole slew of factors, there is a lot more pulling me toward the midwest, but i'm definitely happy to be a vet in 4 years!

I interviewed at noon (well, more like 2:30) on Friday as well. I wonder if you were in my group. If you don't mind me asking, why the hesitancy?

Please no one take offense to this, they are simply my observations and assumptions:
I'm not quite sure it's the right fit for me, and I wasn't very impressed - i thought the VT campus was beautiful and bam - there's the vet school looking like a forgotten bunker. It seems like a lot of improving needs to be done inside as well. I didn't find the warm welcome as I did at Ohio State. I also wasn't too thrilled when a professor said their weakness was exotics/wildlife - but I am capable and willing to supplement my education.
Other than that, i'm a city girl so the fact that VT is in the middle of nowhere is a slight downer. I also only know one person in the area and even though it's my instate its 6 1/2 hours from home. Here in the mid west i have a lot of friends and 'family' a huge support network as well as many opportunities to work with loads of chinchillas - which is my passion. In VA i will have to travel much further to access those opportunities which i don't think is going to be feasible with the hectic vet school schedule.

That being said, moving from MD to MI was a huge change and after a few months of living here I was desperate to leave and considered dropping out to go closer to home. Nowadays, the only driving reason for me to leave is the weather (yuck) - i have grown to love MSU and my friendships, etc. here.

I'm a VA resident and my parents desperately want me to go to Tech, but I've just got a bad feeling about it. I love Blacksburg and there are more than a few days when I wish I'd gone there for undergrad, however I just don't like their tracking system and what seems like a lack of opportunities that are commonly found at other vet schools. However take this with a very large grain of salt because I have friends there who love it and this is strictly opinion. I definitely plan on visiting them and seeing what the vet school is like, however I just don't currently feel the same pull towards Tech.

I have always planned on going to the Va tech vet school and was planning on only applying IS this year, and now, here I am undecided between IS and Missouri, of all places. No offense taken, none at all GreennWhite 🙂.

I do get some of your concerns; I have some too. My biggest problem is that I feel if I don't leave this area now, I never will, even temporarily. I've always lived in Va and have lived in the B'burg area for ~9 years. I went to a local CC and Va. Tech; I'll probably know 1/4 of the 2014 class by sight and will have talked to maybe 2 of them. I've had a pretty miserable time at Tech undergrad--and I know that vet school is nothing like undergrad--but I worry that I'll spend the next four years waiting for the end of the semester and thinking 'the next semester couldn't possibly be worse,' and being disappointed when the next semester rolls around.

I wasn't too impressed either w/ the facilities--but that could have been because I've been through them about a dozen times 😉. As for tracking, I don't think it is as big a deal as the pro or con trackers make it out to be. It means more elective oppertunities, basically. Students graduate all the time and get jobs in non tracking fields. I know of a few myself. I know some of the faculty are great, but I do worry a bit about some of the administration.

As for Blacksburg, when it is not super windy (an unfortunate amount of time) I love it! I certainly wouldn't want to live anywhere too much bigger. There are tons of outdoor activities (1/2 hour from the AT!!!) and Roanoke is a decent size city and is only ~35 minutes away. However, I think there is a lot of personal taste going on as far as living area and ideal towns.

Sorry for the hijcak! I've been wanting to get some of this off my chest. I'll probably see some of you at the prospective student weekend! 😀

I thought my question would kind of fit in this thread... I was placed on the alternate list at Oregon State and I was wondering if anyone knows how far down the alternate list they usually go through??

Thanks!! 🙂

Do schools usually call or email (or both) the people on the wait-list?

Does anybody know how far down Michigan State or Iowa State go on their alternate lists usually?😕?

I know Iowa State goes down pretty deep into the alternate list. We were told last year they went through position 92 or so.

I am number 20 at Minnesota, does anybody know how that might work out?

Hi, I'm #8 at minnesota (OOS) and I read on another sdn thread that they have gone through 30 people on the waitlist in the past (but I don't know if that was an OOS or IS waitlist). Your rank on the waitlist will likely change by April 15 as more accepted OOS students decline admission at MN to go elsewhere. Also, after reading some threads from last years waitlisted students, a girl who was #29 on the OOS waitlist got called on 4/29 to be offered admission so hang in there!

I am actually IS so I wonder if that puts me in a bad spot. I got accepted at ISU and will send in my acceptance there but I feel like I should still hold out for MN which will cost me tons less money in the long run (and be much closer to family, and my faince's job...). I just hope they don't call me on Sept 7th like they say they can since ISU classes start on Aug. 23rd.

Are you IS? I think historically the only go out to spot 15 or so, although every year is different of course.

I am #27 IS, (3rd from the bottom) and have accepted there is no hope so I am treating it like a rejection. Looks like you are in a slightly better position.

I also have an acceptance from ISU I *think* I will take, although the OOS pricetag is so daunting.

alaina83 and HandD42, can you put in your deposit for the other respective schools you're both considering and then just wait to hear from MN? While technically a spot might open up immediately before the fall semester, you probably won't have to wait that long to hear back. From some of the older threads that I've perused, it seems that June/July is usually the cutoff.

hope that helps 🙂

Does anyone know how far down the alternate list Missouri traditionally goes? I'm number 35 on the OOS list, and i was just curious if i should let the hope die or not

Does anyone know about the OOS list for Wisconsin? How many people they get to on the OOS list--the letter said something but it was vague---anyone know someone get off it really far down the list? 🙄

For everyone wondering about how much waitlists might move at their schools, maybe try looking at the past couple years "off the waitlist" threads?

class of 2013

class of 2012

Obviously not perfect samples, but should give you some idea...

Hah I am wondering the EXACT same thing. I think the letter mentioned anywhere from 25-80 WL spots get used, but then again I think they ranked maybe 150 people so it is really hard to predict.

I have a position at ISU and am WL (with a high number) at WI but their OOS tuition is much cheaper then ISU so I am interested to see how far the WL actually will move.

HandD42 I'm in the same boat... Offered a spot at ISU, WL at WI [but my WL ranking is in the middle of the "we typically take 25-80" range]. I'm definitely sending my acceptance form to ISU, but I feel like I should take a spot at WI if offered because of the difference in OOS tuition. Why doesn't WI invite alternates to the open house?!? I would feel much better about accepting a WI offer in May/June/July if I could see the school and attend an organized event. What if I don't like WI as much as ISU? WI--why must you be sooo cheap and complicate our lives? Gah!

You could try calling Wisconsin and setting up a tour with them. I did that over winter break. They were more than happy to do it.

Uh oh If we are all thinking the same thing about WI I'll never get in😉

It does suck that we aren't allowed to go to the open house but I guess I can see their reasoning, no point in showing a bunch of people around who aren't going to be able to attend.

To be honest I am not very hopeful about my WL spot. The class size is so small and the OOS tuition is so reasonable it seems doubtful that they would go through too many spots before the class would close. Unfortunately the SDN data is not helpful as the only WL survivor last year was IS.

Weird question: I live on the East Coast and was waitlisted for IA. When I received my waitlist notification it said that I had been placed on the "resident" alternate list. I am not a resident of IA so is it unusual that it said I was placed on the resident alternate list or did everybody's say this?

My letter says non-resident ...so yes I would consider that a little strange. You might want to call or email them to let them know of the mistake.

Those old threads give me hope for sure... even if they don't share the whole story, its nice to see "Yeah, I'm waiting on <insert school here>" but their signature has since changed to "<insert school here> c/o 2013!"

A little over a month til April 15th...

Regarding the Wisconsin waitlist, one of my friends who is a first-year at Wisconsin says one of her classmates was #139 on the OOS waitlist and received a call on July 22. 👍

That's probably not typical for most years based on Wisconsin's letter, but I thought it might be worth mentioning...

Maybe their waitlist moves more quickly because they don't invite us to their open house. If you're accepted to another school and you get a couple days to decide, you're probably less likely to change your mind for an unknown quantity...

30 days and counting! Getting more and more impatient each day...😀

I know of 5 OOS students who are turning down their MN offers...so if you're #1-5 on the OOS waitlist, you're going to get in!

Hi!

Im relatively new to the board. I was waitlisted (unranked) for my IS school NCSU...and that is my only hope as I did not get in OOS. Is it just me or does anyone else think about it everyday (it can be quite distracting for me anyways)? The wait is driving me insane. April 15th cant get here soon enough! Good luck to everyone! 🙂

I'm not sure if MN does things differently, but I think most schools accept more than their class size knowing that some people will decline, so more than 1 person needs to decline if you are ranked 1.

Good luck!

Ughh yes the wait is driving me insane too! I did get in to an OOS school which I'm thankful for, but am dying to go to my IS school (cornell), where I'm an alternate and have no clue what the chances are. I check this forum like eight times a day in some hope that it will make waiting easier

Doesnt Cornell rank their IS alternates? You may have to call them if the status page didnt say. I know a vet years ago who was waitlisted, and they came right out and said "you are number 2 on our list, so we fully anticipate having a spot for you" etc.

not that i know of (perhaps they used to?) - or maybe they do secretly, and believe me i asked! emailed & they said they don't release ANY information! not sure why 🙁 although i'd loovve to go there, i am trying not to place too much hope/value on it because i can't imagine there are many (if any) in state students that will decline.

btw - congrats on your recent acceptance 🙂

Oh my gosh, totally! I'm on the wait list at Washington State (OOS), and that's it, so it's all I think about. I think my boyfriend is getting a little tired of it. 😉

glad to know I am not the only one obsessing about the waitlist. I know my boyfriend is tired of hearing about it! lol. I keep checking my email and have my phone with me all the time now just in case I get contacted before april 15th (wishful thinking...i know). Not to mention I already check SDN way too many times a day as it is....sigh. I'll keep my fingers crossed for everyone!

Uncertainty is usually much worse than the most negative outcome. Not knowing one way or the other is really painful. Hang in there!

I totally agree! When I got waitlisted, I felt like a rejection would have almost been better! Everyone I told that to told me I was crazy, and now I am grateful for at least getting this far, but at least a rejection would help me plan for next year. The not knowing where I am going to be in 6 months is driving me crazy! 😱

This is pretty much how I feel. Come August, I will either have received an offer or not, so I'd rather know what that result is now!!! I am completely willing to wait (and am trying to do so positively) if it means I have a chance, but I still want to knooooow!

I'm the kind of person who really likes to plan ahead, especially when it comes to moving, so that makes not knowing even worse. The other problem is, in my head, I'm already planning all the things I'll need to do to move, supplies I'll need to get, starting a blog (like everyone else!), etc. I have family in Washington, so I'm already planning a dinner party for them at my new place (not actually planning planning, but thinking about what I'd like to cook)... that I don't even have and might not be getting this year... 😛 I have to keep reminding myself that I'm not in yet. Trying not to get my hopes up!
