#WaitListedAndProud2016_A Post-April 30th Saga

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
These people earned their acceptances and can do whatever they choose with them. I know plenty of people with multiple acceptances who are still figuring out where to go.
I agree! If someone is STILL figuring it out, then by all means, they should hold onto their acceptances. But, if someone is 100% sure that he/she is going somewhere and they STILL hold on to the schools... that is a different story. Of course, people deserve the places that accepted them. I do not covet or look down on those people whatsoever. But, to deliberately hold onto a school "just because" isn't a very nice thing to do. I am sure we all see the distinction.

Did you actually just say Princeton? Do you mean this kid got into Princeton undergrad?
Touche', I meant Yale. These ivy's confuse me 😛 He didn't end up choosing it either way.

I noticed right when I wrote it that I was wrong haha. Thanks for correcting me.

I'm bitter that I got rejected everywhere and that is informing my judgment to some extent. I sympathize if people truly are still making up their minds. I know that they have the right to do whatever they want--but for those who have long since made up their minds to not withdraw I do find it questionable. To do that is just completely at odds with my personal set of beliefs and it's not something I would ever imagine doing myself. I suppose everyone has their reasons.

One of my best pre-med friends at college was on the WL at 3 schools that are notorious for basically zero waitlist movement, and just got off of one yesterday. Keep your hopes high people — it can and will happen!
Do you mind saying which school this is?? If not, no worries 😉

Should we write a LOI?
Do you have acceptances elsewhere? If so, it could be helpful. I talked to an admissions officer at a school I am waitlisted at and she said that if you are waitlisted and don't have any acceptances, it is "assumed" you want to go there and a LOI is redundant.

Quick question that probably been answered somewhere here before....
but if you are holding onto a waitlist, can that school see that you have no other acceptances? Or is it only if they offer you an acceptance can they see that?

At this time, all schools that you are waitlisted at can see how many acceptances you are currently holding. This is why sending a LOI will most likely only have weight if you have at least one acceptance (if the school sees that you have 0 acceptances, then as stated a few posts up, it is a bit redundant because of course you would go there if accepted).

I wonder if it would have any weight if I sent them a gift basket of assorted fruits and cheeses.

I'm pretty certain only when a school accepts you that they then can see other acceptances that you are holding.

Also, many people who have multiple acceptances drop them without us knowing. SDN is not the entire applying population.
That's true; no one denies that fact. But people who aren't on SDN also keep their acceptances until the last moment as well (as my aforementioned friend did). The pendulum swings both ways. Either way, my concern isn't other people's philosophies of whether or not they should keep acceptances until the last moment or not; I am just concerned about the people in this forum making sure they do everything possible to get off the waitlists they are on an feel comfortable transitioning into med school/a job/lab/travel year next year. : )

So only holding one waitlist might actually be beneficial? Like a school knows if they accept me I'll go.
Or am I overanalyzing that and schools don't really care how many other acceptances/waitlists I have?

I'm not sure they'll know if you have other waitlists, but being on a waitlist with no acceptances, that may be a boon. They balance having what they see as the best fit class for their school and who is likely to attend.

3 WL, 0 Acceptances, Marion, CCOM, & LECOM-B (Accept hold list though). I had 1 WL at Ohio State last year, I was really hoping to not play this game again this year. At least I'll be finishing my master's...

For me, this honestly has been the hardest part of the waitlist process. I'm decent enough at distracting myself while waiting for this process to work itself out... and then inquisitive Aunt #3 comes along and ruins my day: "Still Waiting? Still? But what will you do? Where will you live? Please pass the salt."

At which point I drown myself in my soup bowl.

Waitlisted at Drexel, Wayne State, and two programs at University of Miami.

lmao story of my life! It has gotten so bad, by the time people start asking me ANYTHING that resembles a question about the process, I just say No.

Anyone: "Have you hea....?"
Me: "No."

Anyone: "Do you kno...?"
Me: "No"

The best way is to just shut it down even before it is asked. Especially with family members and friends. Just my opinion

Yepppp! That's been my reply to everyone haha.

Does having a DO acceptance and mentioning it an a LOI for an MD waitlist carry any weight, since AMCAS & AACOMAS don't communicate? Or is it basically null since the MD is going to assume you'd go there since they see you have no MD acceptances and/or don't care that you have DO.

In my semi-uneducated opinion, no, MD schools will not care if you have a DO acceptance. Mentioning that you have another acceptance in an LOI is basically letting them know that you will turn that other acceptance down for theirs. For example, you have an acceptance at Harvard but you'll turn them down for an acceptance at state U because you want to be closer to care for your ailing parents. This will potentially make state U more inclined to accept you from the waitlist.

Every MD school assumes that you'll turn down a DO acceptance for an MD acceptance so an LOI is not necessary.

Waitlisted AF with no acceptances, but I don't mind people holding on to their acceptances until the last minute,
even if they're sure where they're going. This is an important decision, they earned each and every one of their acceptances
fair and square, and people tend to be loss averse in general, so they can take their own sweet time for all I care.

It's not as if after nearly a year of waiting, anxiety, and self- hate, I'm not going to be able to tolerate a week more all of a sudden.

It's fine, really.
Just fine.

I interviewed at 10 schools, was on 6 wait lists ( dropped off 1 so far), 1 rejection, 1 awaiting decision and just got my 2nd acceptance. The waitlists came first so I was pretty despondent at a point. Scared of having so many interviews and coming out empty handed. So as I decide which other wait lists to drop, I am tempted to hold on to some positions to make all that waiting pan out with curiosity.

Why drop a waitlist? Until they offer you an acceptance you can just sit on em

I know, but when Case Western told me they start July 6 and have accepted people the day before class starts, I knew it wasn't a choice any longer. If I slow someone else's acceptance even by one day at a school I honestly know I will say no to I will feel bad. However certain other schools I have more emotional connections to seeing what they say no matter what. Ego boost after my early anxiety!

9 WL is that a record?

Wait you too?! I thought I was the only 0ne. D0n't worry, something's gonna happen, you're a rockstar for even getting 9 interviews, let alone making a good enough impression to have them not reject you!

You are telling my story almost to the letter. Uncanny. Good luck, and congrats on the second acceptance!

Thank you!! I'm not ashamed to need a little feel good in what has been a stressful process for most of us!

My 1 awaiting decision turned to another acceptance just now!! not trying to hijack the thread but it just goes to show how unpredictable this can be. All my acceptances are from later interviews which I suspect shows the benefits of volume. I was lucky enough to finetune mistakes made very early as I went. With only 2-3 interviews I might have not had that chance to eff up royally or slightly. In the future I would advise people to bulk up on mock interviews if possible!
