Wake Forest Class of 2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Dr. Thom,
I'm looking at a new condo in W. Winston off of 421 and Jonestown Road. Does living in W. Winston make you feel far away from classmates or does that not matter? Our realtor is trying to convince me that all med students live in Ardmore and to buy a house and that living "out there" (a whole 6-7 miles) would make us feel far away. I'm not convinced. Thanks for the help.

MG

BTW, I should say that I am in the process of withdrawing my places at other school and have decided on Wake. What a great and helpful group--look forward to meeting everyone in July!

We should get an active role call on this sucker. A List of everybody who is in for the class of 2010. As people decide, or get in, they can add their names...

I shall start it: (sorry if I miss you)

Assuming that none of the class of 2010 is psychopathic, I can put you up for a few days while apt hunting.

You should be getting your orientation packet in the mail not too shortly from now. In that packet is a form you can fill out to be placed on a roommate email list so you can find a roommate. However, buyer beware. (The specs on the computer you guys will be getting is also in the packet)
Congrats again guys! The class of '09 looks forward to meeting you all in July!

Actually, I wanted to get into fly fishing for a long time.. Is the equipment very expensive?

Hiking and Backpacking - I was going to do the PCT this year if I didn't get accepted 😉

Never tried fly fishing with actual fly gear - but I used to do quite a bit of fishing.

Short answer: Yes. It is expensive.

I got lucky because my grandfather and father did it. I just kind of inherited their equipment.

To start from nothing, minimally you need a rod, reel, and flies. You can probably find a rod and reel at a sports store for under $200, but you can pay up to several grand for one as well.

Flies. They don't seem expensive (maybe $2-5), but you use a lot of them and so it adds up. It's really not that hard to make your own flies, but it takes a little bit of start up money and time to learn. Once you have the basics for making your own flies, it really only costs about 5-10 cents per fly, and you can make a lot in a short amount of time.

A lot of people use waders, so that's another expense.

So basically, it takes an investment to get started, but once you are on your feet it's a very cheap and fun sport. A license isn't too much (~$30/year), and the only other real money is gas to go find a good river!

Well, got my financial aid packet today.

I am officially below the poverty line.

I know it says not to discuss amongst our fellow students but...

Was anybody else disappointed in their scholarship offer?

After two packed days of looking I think I have explored every housing option Winston-Salem has to offer, and I am happy to say I signed a lease on a fabulous 2 bedroom/ 2 bathroom FURNISHED condo this morning! I hope to share this condo with a fellow first year student roomate, male or female. I am also posting on the "Roomate Wanted" section of the Housing site, but PM me for further details, or if you have any questions about looking for housing, I may be able to help :luck:

JrsyGirl, Congrats!!! Isn't WS awesome? I hope you have not caught the rain that was starting when we were leaving on Thursday. Which area of Winston are you going to be at?

Hey Multi, I'll be living in Southwest WS about 3 miles away from WFUSM. I liked the idea that I'd be a little bit aways from the hospital, so I won't feel like I'm living at school. And yes, we got some pretty heavy rain Friday and Saturday, but today its sunny and georgeous....just in time for me to head back north....

Hey! Did any of you go see Thank You for Smoking? Tee hee!! You should! Your future home for the next 4 years plays a key role! 😉 😉

Anybody know anything about the 91-day T-Bill?

I am trying to chose between the fixed 6.8% loan, and the variable loans based on the T-Bill.

Is the T-Bill going up this year? Last year it was 3.00%, and the year before 1.07%.

Scary trend...

What's scary MN81, is that until I googled T-Bill I had no idea what that was :scared: :scared: Are you using that for home loan or school loan?

Congrats JersyGirl! I'm putting a contract on my condo this week. If anyone is looking to buy, I highly recommend Ellen Sockton (www.ellenstockton). A doc that inteviewed me recommended her and she's been awesome to work with.

Looking forward to meeting everyone.

The T-Bill is an interest rate determined by the government (Federal Reserve?) that determines how much interest you pay on your Stafford and other loans. One of the lenders for this year offers a fixed 6.8% rate on the Staffords, while the others offer variable rates based on the T-Bill.

The T-Bill has been all over the place in the last few years (from really low, to quite high) - that is the scary part.

I wanted to know if anybody has any insight about where the T-Bill is expected to be next year, and in the years to follow. Obviously if it is expected to stay lower than the fixed 6.8, then it would be a better deal.

What's up, guys? Hey Multilocularis, we interviewed on the same day and I've been waiting ever since.
Anyway, I was wondering if you could tell me a bit about the computer requirement. Do they make you buy a certain model? If so who makes it and what kind of specs does it have?
Well, perhaps I will see yous guys in a couple months.

Yuck. I have 6 more days of work until I become a bum :meanie: for 2 months and a full-time student thereafter! YIPPPEEEEEEE

BTW I am definitely up for trying some fly fishing and going backpacking...

Any idea exactly what model IBM T43 we will be "purchasing"? I saw the previous post, but when I searched for t43 it listed a few different sets of specs (RAM, Memory, etc)... Thanks...

They sent the specifications in the 'Pre Enrollment' email. If you haven't gotten it yet, just PM me with your email and I can send you the file.

Congrats on making a med school decision!

Anyone else going camping? Thinking about it?

Reading over the email, I notice the line about wearing "dress-casual" clothes for orientation. Five days of dress casual? I don't have one days worth. I've got 5000 scrubs, jeans and t-shirts, but dress casual?

Talk about getting expensive - I need my loans now to buy clothes

The email says dress casual for 5 days but it's really for like 2 days. The real reason they want you to dress nice is because they are taking your official school picture and you need to look nice under the white coat. The picture is taken within the first two days so you should be fine. On the other hand, you may as well get those nice clothes because you will definitely need them during Phase I. You have to dress in professional clothes every other week for your interviewing class. Good fun! 😉

Guys I was joking about the clothes...

We don't have to wear ties, do we???? cause I went into medicine so I never have to wear a tie again 😎 😀

If anybody sees a house to rent in W-S (hopefully close to the Medical Center) that would work for a husband-wife situation, let me know.

I am flying down early June to hopefully sign a lease.
