Wake Forest Class of 2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I recently got off the waitlist. Pretty sure I'll be joining you all, and looking forward to it.

Can anyone confirm the start date? I had thought it was July 31, but then I looked in the info I wrote down at the interview and it looks like orientation actually starts a week earlier on the 24th! That is bad......because I have no choice but to be working until at least the 20th, giving me four days to move 1000 miles and show up.

1. Do we have a confirmed start date for both orientation and
2. a start date for the first day of real classes?
3. Do we know if orientation is mandatory? If I miss some due to my situation is that bad?

I haven't received any info yet because I'm just sending in my deposit now.

Thanks for any help with these questions....

If July 24 is a Monday, that will probably be the start date of your orientation. And I'm sorry to say, it is absolutely mandatory unless you have a totally outrageous excuse (i.e. like you were accepted off the waitlist the Friday of orientation).

Congrats! Where are you coming from that it is 1000mi. move? I hope everything works out... 😀

Yep - the correspondance they just mailed to us clearly states they will give our seats away if we don't show up for orientation 😱

If anyone needs help moving, PM me - like I said, I'm a bum for the next two months!

Congratulations on getting of the waitlist :hardy:

If anybody sees a house to rent in W-S (hopefully close to the Medical Center) that would work for a husband-wife situation, let me know.

I am flying down early June to hopefully sign a lease.

I'll keep an eye out.

The places on the Wake site were helpful, we actually rented an apartment from the list before we bought our house.

Thanks for the info, all...

crap

I'm going to have to put some thought into this.

Well at least it's not quite 1000 mi. after all, only 800 (from Boston).

Looking forward to seeing you all

Congrats and Welcome aboard! Feel free to PM me if you'll need any help with moving/unpacking
In fact, we should all coordinate unpacking efforts

Get off of SDN and go see some patients 😀

The same could be said for you!!! 😛 I'm just glad I have internet! Hahahaha!

Hey everyone, I'm going to Wake as well and I am pretty sure about the camping thing. My wife and I are flying out this weekend to look at houses, so if anyone is already there and has some helpful hints - I'd love to meet up and talk. I'm moving from 2100 miles away - any help unpacking (once we decide on a house and a moving date) would be great. Wow, my first post ever!

I know it says not to discuss amongst our fellow students but...

Was anybody else disappointed in their scholarship offer?

Hello all- another fellow classmate next year. I had to reply to this, as the ONLY thing so far that has dissappointed me about WFU was the financial aid process and amount. Did anyone esle find the CSS profile a difficult program (compared to the FAFSA), especially for students not coming straight from undergraduate?

So I got my acceptance today to Wake! YIPPEE. Now i have to plan how I am going to move from Cali to NC! I cant wait to meet you all.....sounds like next year is going to be great!

Hey guys,

I know that many of you have been accepted to Wake Forest. I just got in from the waiting list this week and I am really confused. I wanted to find out what are some things that you liked about Wake Forest. Especially, people who are from out of state, what are some things that have attracted you to attend WFU and be in North Carolina. I found the Winston-Salem area to be pretty suburban and I'm not sure how I feel about it. Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,

I am originally from Houston and moved around a bit as an Army Brat, but the small town/suburban feel of Clemson really grew on me (to the point where I no longer like the idea of living in a big city). There is a lot to do in-and-around Winston-Salem although it may take some time for you to feel out what you enjoy. As for myself, I am looking forward to getting back near western North Carolina and the mountains/hill country... 👍

Does anyone have information on the MD/MS in Theology (in conjunction w/ a local seminary) that I saw mentioned in some WFUSM literature, but not others. Any info. will be appreciated... 👍

Ish -
I'm coming from a huge metro area out west and I liked the idea of less traffic, bad air, etc. And, from what I read - Winston Salem still has a lot of big city appeal - at least the biggest mall in the Carolinas (so they claim - and who really cares anyway). Cost of living is a heck of a lot better than out west or any northeastern metro areas, so despite the high cost of tuition, at least you're not hit hard twice. The admissions office seems like they're more helpful than a lot of the other schools as well. Well, that's my two cents... I guess I'm more excited to get out of the big city living (at least for 4 years). And, those in the entering class seem cool... big city, small town... it doesn't really matter if you're surrounded by good friends.

I liked the hospital, curriculum, and really got a great vibe from the students. Everyone has been very positive and excited about attending Wake. The residents (I hear) feel very comfortable with their education once they start their internship (ie not useless and lost!)

Winston-Salem is more "suburban" than some areas, and that's your judgement call. There are plenty of things to do, we're a close to the mountains and about 5 hours away from the ocean. The weather is great, the cost of living is cheap, and people are very friendly.

The big complaint seems to be that their aren't 5000 clubs to choose from on the weekends - but I think you can see from this thread that hasn't played into many decisions.

Good luck with your choice.

Hi Guys,

Just recieved a letter about the "Pre-Matriculation Summer Preparatory Program" and was wondering if any of you current students have any advice regarding the program. I have a humanities background and have never taken biochem, anatomy, etc., but the program starts on July 6th (!) and that seems early. Any thoughts/experience with the program?

Thanks and can't wait to meet everybody.

Hey! I didn't do the pre-matric program myself but from what I understand, it's more of a "get to know wake" program than a science prep program. Given that it's only like 2 weeks long, there won't be much if any science taught. One of my classmates says that you go to some introductory classes just to see how they are run. They aren't meant to really teach science in a serious way. The people who did it got to socialize and meet other students so they had some connections when school started. People didn't study at all during the program; they basically partied every night. It won't give you much of an advantage but I hear it's fun. No matter what, enjoy your summer!!

I asked about the MD/MS when I was at Wake in October. They said they were re-working the program. I got the feeling that they might just be scrapping it.

What loan company did you chose from Wake's list and why? I am trying to decide and just wanted something more than the open-source information... thanks!

For those of you who have made the right choice and decided on Wake, what is your ETA?

I'm closing on my place on July 14th.

Is this based on observation? stats? etc.? I haven't spent much time there, so I have no clue...

Observation, purely. Then again, tobacco money built our future school and hospital, so can we really complain? 😉 😳 :scared: :meanie: 🙄

Makes me want to start smoking. To give back to the industry, I mean.

In answer to the earlier question, I won't be arriving till July 22 or 23.

Man, just reading about you guys planning the move is making me want to get in off the waitlist EVEN MORE! I didn't think that could be humanly possible! I really can't believe that I might still have over 2 more months to be in this limbo stage :scared: I really think it might be killing me, and quite possibly all the people who have to be around me when I complain every few days.

Here's hoping that I get to come on here and legitimately post something as a member of the class!

🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂
Well, I should be studying but I'm way too excited to get into Wake! I thought I would make my first post and say hi. I'm from California and am pumped about starting medical school in July at Wake Forest. Can any current students tell me what they like most and least about the curriculum in the first two years? What about clinical rotations - good amount responsibility or lots of observing and/or scut?

I hope everyone gets some rest and relaxation in before school starts. Seriously, I plan on doing absolutely nothing but maybe improving my golf game, sleeping, and eating.

Anyone buying or renting in Ardmore?

Hey CMar380! I know how you feel. I got accepted off the waitlist recently. Make sure that you let the admissions office know how much you are interested in Wake. They told me in the office that they mark in your file when you call to check on your status, it counts towards showing your interest in the school (within reasonable limits). The office suggested checking once-twice a week. Good luck.

Talk to the financial aid office. When I did they said that since the rates are set by the government, the only real difference between the companies is their customer service and their pay-back incentive packages. Of those suggested, they said that: of the WFU graduates who chose THE, ~95% are actually receiving the incentives they were promised. With the other companies, I think she said it was only ~20-30%. The office suggested that some of the companies can put heavy stipulations on the incentives in order to disqualify people. The financial aid office won't outrightly tell you which company to use- but they can give you stats on how graduates have faired with the companies on the list. Hope that helps your decision!

Pretty much everyone but me right now 😉

My neighbor is looking for a roommate. It is a 3-bed, 2 bath house so you'd have your own bathroom. 500$ /mo covers everything.

My neighbor is a quiet guy and he's gone a lot, but he has dog and he smokes...

PM me if you're interested.

Hey! Thanks for your thoughts. I have heard this before as well, to call once every week or so, but what do you say? Two weeks ago, I talked to Irene Tise for a few minutes about my place on the waitlist, I confirmed that they got my LOI, I told her again that I wanted to be at Wake in the fall, and I sent her a card to thank her for speaking with me (thanks L02810K! 😉 ).

I'd love to call, but what do I say? Do I just talk to the lady that normally answers, or do I ask to talk to Irene again? I'd hate to bug her... especially the day after May 15th. I'd feel dumb just calling to reiterate that Wake is my top choice, or to ask my status on the waitlist again, ya know?

Any thoughts from anyone? 😳

Have y'all signed up for pre-matriculation class yet? I just did this morning

Coming from Cali, I noticed the stinkin smoke right as i got off the plane. YOU CAN SMOKE IN DOORS in a designated smoking area...as if the smell and smoke doesnt travel over the little half wall.

I'm from California too. I thought the smoke would be a problem too but the only place it's really bothered me is in the bars. A lot of the restaurants don't have smoking but some of the restaurants do allow smoking. Some are worse than others but in general, it hasn't been a huge problem.

Hi Everyone! I just recently found out about this forum. It is great to talk with classmates before July. I have definitely decided on Wake. Woohoo! I currently live in Winston Salem (I love it here!) and work at WFUBMC in Clinical Research so if anyone has any questions please let me know. My husband and I just bought a house 6 miles from the hospital. It takes about 10 minutes with traffic and 7 without to get to WFUBMC. There are a few houses left in the neighborhood if anyone is interested. Our payments are great! We have an awesome mortgage guy if anyone needs one. I am really looking forward to meeting everyone. I hope everyone has a great week. 🙂
