  • URM: black female, SES disadvantaged, immigrant
  • cGPA: 3.67 sGPA: 3.56
  • MCAT: 507
  • Major: Neuroscience
  • Undergrad : Johns Hopkins
  • State: resident of GA, but lived in MD the past 5 years
  • Clinical experience: 3900 hours: 3200 from employment as crc, 140 volunteering at a clinic, 500 volunteering at a occupational therapy center, 60 volunteering with red cross (hours seem so fake so I'm not sure how to even defend the legitimacy. Since many of my classes were virtual/hybrid I racked up clinical hours during the day, then just watched lectures when I got home - hence the weak foundation in clinical sciences. I completely regret this and have tried to make up for it during most recent studying for MCAT.)
  • Shadowing: 80 hours
  • Research: 1820 hours, 1 fellowship, 1 publication, 1 poster
  • Nonclinical volunteer: 80 hours (server at homeless & addiction recovery center)
  • Other ECs: Mentorship for minority & low income students, student gov senator, cultural club treasurer, manager at school's leadership office

Background: Non-trad, took two gap years working full time as a clinical study coordinator, and had a rough time with MCAT (495/499/507). I made the mistake of retaking MCAT in August 2023, by the time I got the 499 back I had already sent in my applications. 1 II but ended up withdrawing, no acceptances. Retook in May 2024 & got the 507, so I'm feeling much more confident applying now. Submitted in june so I should be verified any day now & already began prewriting secondaries.

Currently sent in 22 applications, but being super picky about location. Since I will be matriculating later than planned, I'd like to go to school somewhere I wouldn't mind living/planting roots in. I prefer an urban environment with good public transit or a somewhere nearby a big city. Would like to remain in the mid-atlantic region, would also love cali or GA, but open to any suggestions because the end goal is just getting into an MD school.

School List (separated by qualification)
Charles Drew
Mercer
Meharry
Howard
Medical College of GA
Morehouse
Albany
Katz -Temple
GWU
Penn State
SUNY Downstate
UMSOM

Slightly up there, not too big a reach (I think)
UCLA
UCSF
Jefferson
Drexel
Georgetown
NYMC

Full on Reach
Johns Hopkins
Kaiser
Emory
Einstein

Also considering UIC, VCU, Cooper, Rush, RFU, Icahn ( I know its competitive but I caught the NYC bug). Lots of reaches, so I definitely need more target schools. Any general advice on school list or insights would also help. Thanks in advance!

I think you’ve got a good list started. UCLA and UCSF, SUNY are big reaches and lower yields as an oos student. I’d add VCU for sure. Duke fits your description and would give you a good look.

I’d contact the snma chapters at Hopkins, Howard, Maryland, and Georgia. Ask for help with your application and mock interviews.

Ah that definitely makes sense, I’ll work on those lower yield apps last and strengthen the others. Also, reaching out to SNMA chapters sounds like a solid plan. Thank you!

You have a good list of schools and should receive several interviews. You could add any of these schools:
Mount Sinai
Pittsburgh
Miami
Brown
Dartmouth
Tufts

Thank you! I would love Mount Sinai, but was scared off by their MCAT median. Definitely going to apply now.
