Also, do you think I should mention the issues I encountered my sophomore year in my personal statment? My prehealth adviser told me "not to waste space in my personal statement addressing these issues".

Not faculty but the general sentiment with personal issues in personal statements is that they should be avoided, or take up no more than a couple sentences if it alludes to the story you're telling. Remember, the story must draw light as to why you would be a good doctor.
