Hi there,

I'm currently a premed student in the US and it's my dream to eventually live and work as a surgeon in Switzerland (I've fallen in love with Geneva and it's close to family). I speak french fluently, and am a UK citizen. I was wondering what the best path to practising in Switzerland would be - should I go to medical school in the US and somehow transfer over (details on how to do this would be much appreciated), or should I study in the EU or in Switzerland? I would really love any info about any of these directions!

Thanks!

Go to medical school in the country you wish to practice.

Check out Switzerland's licensing requirements for foreign-trained physicians and go from there. In general, most countries are protective of their own graduates and if you are certain that you want to practice in Switzerland, the easiest path is likely to train there.

This forum is probably not teaming with people who would be able to answer that question adequately. If I were in your shoes I would look at my network of family, friends and acquaintances and see if anyone is acquainted with a surgeon or physician in Switzerland who would be willing to correspond with me. That will be the best most accurate source of information, in my opinion.

Maybe you have more luck here: Ars Neurochirurgica - Neurochirurgisches Diskussionsforum that's a small community for german speaking neurosurgeon interested people. My advice: If you still need to go to medical school and have an opportunity to do it in Switzerland then you should go for it. Compared to the U.S it is very cheap and it will be much more easy to get a residency spot in Switzerland. You will be favored by swiss people if you have studied there compared to people who studied abroad (i.e. Europe). Good luck. If you have any questions pm me, I'm from Europe.

I recall there was someone in Pritzker's 2017 class who matched NSG at University of Geneva. So definitely possible to graduate from a US med school and eventually work in Switzerland.

That program is not in the NRMP. It could have been a research year...or something else. Who knows.
