I studied the dental decks and the FIRST AID book.

Mainly I memorized from front to back the FIRST AID book and I am so upset, I failed the exam. 70!!! AAAAAAHHHH.

So my main reason for loggin on here was to tell everyone, DO NOT PUT ANY WEIGHT ON THE FIRST AID BOOK AT ALL. The test questions were extremely much more detailed than this book, it really has ruined my career.

I have a 3.6 GPA and now have failed the boards for the first time due to this book. I am so upset.

after reading some of the posts on this website no wonder i failed, it looks like several of you have found over 100 mistakes in this book.

my god this is so upsetting, i feel like i should sue the company.

No offense, but if you have a 3.6 GPA you should be able to at least pass the board exam with very little preparation. Most of the students in my class passed the Kaplan NBDE mock exam without any preparation.

I'm sorry that you failed- try a different method of studying for your 2nd attempt. Best of luck.

I just ordered the first aid book. Should I send it back?

No, the first aid book is pretty good minus some mistakes in the DA section. However, I don't plan on using the NBDE first aid book for much more than histology because I would rather study for the boards using a systems-based approach (Cardio, GI, Resp, etc.). The USMLE version of first aid is better suited for systems.

jb!🙂

well acc. to me u shd not rely on only this book as it serves just as a reference after u have gone thru the entire stuff from a review book ..... anyways dont get upset and give ur best shot the next time
good luck

verticalbitewin can you shed some light on how you found the exam? it would help us out. thanks in advance.

I took the NBDE 1, and I would like to say this, our school took the KAPLAN NBDE as a practice 2 saturdays before I took my boards and I passed it. THEY ARE IN NO WAY COMPARABLE!!! once you take the real NBDE then post your experience.

Well, the exam is not given in sections, they basically hit you with the most random questions right off the bat. There were tons of premolar q's on it and not the ones such as mesiolingual grooves, etc, they were lengths of roots, root canal approaches, etc. Tons of questions seemed to have two answers and there were a bunch of embryology questions, lymph node questions and constrictor muscle questions....

This is not a reference it is a NBDE 1 prep book correct?

Who in their right mind will read tons of books then read the First Aid book too, who has this much time in their dental school curriculum.

I studied for 3 months and it was hard to find the time, but if I would have studied any sooner I would have just forgotten the info.

Heck, how am I supposed to study all these materials and take 33 credit hours?????

First aid uhmmm i kindda have a love hate relationship with that book on some areas the tables are extremely helpful on others is just confusion .

It's up to you to pick which parts of the book you would consider to study from , but to rely on the whole thing for the test is wack 😱 , Dental anatomy is awful , Human anatomy - biochemistry and physiology are good! micro/patho - fair .

i heard that if you studied the Dental Decks and took old exams, that you will do fine on the NBDE part I.

is this true?

Hey its like this, the book is 600 pages. Now why in the world wouldnt a 600 page detailed book which was written specifically for the NBDE 1 give me enough information to get a 75 on the exam???

I think I was mostly stressed out the wazooo but when I left I wrote down about 150 questions that I could remember and i have been able to find only a few in the First Aid book, so upsetting.....

I did find the answers from Google, wish they would have let me used it!

I'm bewildered that you can get a 3.6 gpa and not pass the test with barely any studying, let alone 3 months. I've talked to several people who've done just that, and these aren't people at the top of their class.

I'm really sorry that this happened to you, but maybe it's fair to put the blame where blame belongs. This book didn't fail the test for you, and even if there were factual errors and gaps in the requisite knowledge, you're the one who chose your study strategy. It's pointed out in all the first aid books that they're HIGH YIELD INFO ONLY, and are meant to be supplemental, not a definitive study strategy.

I'm not crazy about the book either I'm just saying don't rely on just one source. NbdE I Mosby is specifically made for that test. I believe i have enough experience to know that the mosby book is way too simplified to just study from there and to not believe that all the questions are going to come out from that book.

well i was focusing entirely on my gpa and not studying for nbde by looking at 10 different books.

I was definitely suprised.

Vertical,
I graduated dental school in 2001. I started taking part 1 dec. of my junior year. That was the worst mistake ever. I should have taken it with the rest of my class. Please do not get discouraged, I have taken it over 5 times.I will not specify the exact number. I now have been out of school for 7 years, have a family and no job. I decided to not be depressed anymore and to study like my life depended on it, which in essence, it really does. I had to move away from my husband and step son, take my two little girls and move in with my mother so that i could have more help. I have sacrificed my family's needs to get through this. I took the exam on June 2, 2008 and feel great. I not once panicked, felt stupid, rushed through questions or lost my confidence. I am still awaiting my scores , but believe in my efforts, myself, and most important GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am willing to bet my sisters Mercedes convertible that I passed. I went in prepared. I studied the dental decks and for the last 2-3 weeks I read the questions and answered them and then I looked up each answer in the first aid book and other texts. It gave me specific topics to focus on. I have been taking this exam for years and have probably seen all versions. It is still the same info, just worded differently. I suggest you take it on the computer if you continue to have trouble, get proper rest, and focus on achieving this goal. I am sorry this is soooo long, but felt you needed to know that it can be done and that you have to believe in your knowledge and GOD.
Thanks for reading!

😕 😱 🙄

No big deal failing the exam for the first time, you might have a sensation of a lost but in reality you won because you gained experience , next time you will be sharp at it 😉

How many questions did you answer right? Forgive me for asking such a personal question.. The reason is I am taking the exam this tuesday and I just need to pass - get 75 and I am wondering how low I can anwer and still pass!

For part 1 of boards, I have the First Aid book as well as dental decks. Should both of these be suitable as long as I use Wheeler's Dental Anatomy/Occlusion book in place of the First Aid book for the DA section prep?

I hear the new format is tripping folks up. I was lucky enough to take the old format. Under the old format about 25% of my class scored 90+, the class below us only had 3% of the class make 90+ (they took the new format test). I don't know if the questions are just tougher or if it is not curved as much, but hang in there. I don't know if it helps since I took the old format, but I went through the dental decks 3 times knowing not only the Q&A, but bascially went back to my lectures and textbooks and learned as much as I could about every answer choice and stuff on the back. I also looked at the First Aid for USMLE, it was good for some of the systems. Also I took alot of old tests and again like with the decks looked up every answer choice up in textbooks and old lectures to make sure I knew alot about it. I wouldn't rely on one source, but you don't have to read 10 books cover to cover either. Find out your weak points and hit them hard. Good luck.

Hey everyone!!! It is unfortunate for me that I did not do as well as I expected. I just found out that I scored a 70. My scores were:
Anatomy~43 correct
Biochemistry~42 correct
Microbiology~52
Dental Anatomy~60
The only reason why I am even posting this is to let you know that despite the fact that I did not pass, I am still going to keep taking it until I do. This was attempt number 9! I know that some of you may think that I am crazy, but I am determined. I am not dumb, but have just been diagnosed with ADD and am now on medication to improve my focus. I really thought I had done well, I am in shock, but know that I cannot be depressed. It has been 3 years since my last attempt before this. If you do not do well, take it ASAP so that the info can be fresh. Please keep me posted VERTICAL on your progress and feel free to keep in touch. I just don't know what I did wrong. 😕

I took basic science classes in 97 and 98. I am preparing for part 1 as well and it feels like I gonna have to build up from scratch as far as the fundamentals go. Sucks but that is the only way to go.

Yeah, I think that I may just take more time to study. I do want to take it as soon as possible after my 90 day waiting period is over. It is still fresh in my mind from last month so I will just study harder and longer. I completed all 4 years at my dental school including the clinicals. i am not the only student that is in this position, but one of the very few that continue to take the exam. It makes me sad that even after finishing dental school, I still fail the exam. I know i can do it, I just have to keep pushing. I just can't fathom going to dental school and being this close to actually getting the degree and the only thing holding me back is Part 1! Oh well, I will keep you guys posted on my progress and thank all for posting their experiences good and bad to help others out.👍

If you can get into and through dental school before being diagnosed ADHD, that isn't what's causing you to fail the NBDE. A lot of smart people with ADHD never succeed because they pay too much attention to the label instead of what's actually causing the problem. ADHD is enough of an obstacle by itself; don't make things worse by turning it into a crutch.

To answer denthearthrob's question, I began dental school in 1996 and at that time, we were allowed to continue on to the next class even without having passed NBDE 1. It was not a requirement to move onto the junior year.Since my departure, they have changed those rules due to the fact that several students have been in this spot and still are.I have completed all of my academic requirements and clinical requirements to receive a DDS except for NBDE 1 and 2. Once I complete these exams,My degree will be mailed to me.
As for the comment left by aphistis, I am not using my recent diagnosis as a crutch. If that were the case, i would have canceled my last application and reapplied asking for provisions. Also, do you think that I would put myself or my family through the many retakes if I used ANY excuses? I mainly posted my comments and scores to encourage those who have been having trouble not to give up even when it seems impossible. You did not hear me complaining about why I failed! GOD has all of us on a different journey in this life and this is just my cross to bear. I intend on taking the exam until I pass. As a matter of fact, I have already reapplied for the exam. By no means am I a quitter or an excuse maker. Just a person trying to encourage others.
Thanks for reading!!!!!!!!!
Peace and Blessings to all taking the exam and who are awaiting results.😀👍:hardy::luck:

I just don't know what I did wrong. 😕

If you don't know what you did wrong, then you probably won't pass. If this really was your 9th attempt, then you are simply doing the same things over and over again in hopes of getting better results. The 9 attempts should tell you something. You have to change something in order to get different results. I wish you luck, but don't waste your time and energy unless you can find what you did wrong.

I don't mean to belittle your situation or make light of it, but I simply must know what dental school you attended.

The fact that they'll mail you a diploma 12+ years after graduation, as long as you pass Part I and Part 2 is absurd. Frankly, I'm astonished.

Look, I was just trying to offer a little advice. No need to get snippy. Good luck on your next retake.

Soooooooo like others not trying to rip on you here but...

They let you take the NBDE 10x? Isn't there some sort of cutoff or limit? I didn't know dental schools/the ADA graduated people who needed that many attempts. Does someone out there have the run down on this? I just figured after so many attempts they would make your repeat some schooling or kick you to the curb.

I'm going to agree with some others. If you have taken it 9x and failed, 9x. Then you are obviously doing something wrongly. Maybe some more practice tests to gauge weaknesses, but I guess after taking it 9 times you've probably memorized every released test by now.

Wow! I am in awe at some of your comments. I am soooooo glad that I have high self esteem!
APHISTIS~ I was not being snippy towards you . I wished you Peace and Blessings on your life. I was just letting you know that I am not an excuse maker. Thanks for your feed back.

BROWNSTAIN~ I came in under different rules than the school operates under now. I do think putting a cap on the number of times for the students is beneficial, especially not promoting them to the next class until success on the national boards.

ITSGAVINC~ I graduated 8 years ago, not 12, but thank you for not belittling me and my situation. What else do you suggest the do with me since I finished all of my requirements except for the boards? Maybe they should make me beg for my degree instead of just allowing me to receive it since i have failed so many times.I understand that you feel my situation, or school's decision is absurd. I am grateful for my school, and the new Dean because they are supportive and helpful in my achieving my goals.

I thought this site was a great idea. I was under the assumption that we could be open and honest about our lives and to receive support, but I know now that I am wrong. I am a Christian and believe GOD will work this out for me and show me the way. I wish you all extreme success in the future, but if you find yourself to ever be in a crappy situation, I hope you have learned from my strength. I am not embarassed by my situation, just encouraged! We are so quick to judge others when things are going well for us.I wake up each morning with a smile on my face and in my heart, I know how smart I am and will find a solution. I will not allow the rude comments to damage my soul, I REPEAT 9X's, I will not allow the rude comments to damage my soul. GOD BLESS!!!!!!!😀

Judging is calling you a weirdo without knowing you. I haven't done such a thing. Quite to the contrary, YOU posted information about yourself in a public forum.

As I said before, having heart and being tenacious is a huge part of life. You can't let things get you down.

You may think your school is doing you a favor by allowing you to take Part I 9 times (and then you have to take Part II, how will that go?), but that might not be the case. It seems like you could use some formal education (re-education) on the Part I subjects rather than being left on your own. I'm assuming that you won't tell us what school you went to because it isn't a huge bonus for a school to allow a student to drift along as you are doing.

I'd urge you to think outside of the box for this next retake and do something you haven't done before. What you have tried for the last 9 times hasn't worked. It won't work in the future.

I do think you should try and go through formal lectures again or at least take some crash courses which some schools offer during summer to take part 1.

Part contains what? Basic sciences - which at any rate are important nevertheless how many of us needed to correlate clinical situation that deep? I did ok in some of my basic science classes and even better than others in some. But I remembered most of this stuff longer and clearer than my other classmates who had better grades. It is also the exam taking skill that needs to be taken into consideration. Besides she did the dental part in the school and finished her requirements. Everyone does not have the same skills. We do not know how good she was in clinics - may be she was pretty good and the school decided to let her take her own time to be done with part 1 at her own pace. I assume pressure of bills and time constraint, personal life etc get in way. So there are more than one aspects to this.

But I do admire the tenacity. For the fear of not succeeding I put off so many things, one of them was part 1. She is taking the exams no matter what. I do not think I would last that long.

If I were in your place I would have given up long ago. Keep your spirits high.

Apparently you are repeating some mistake you are unaware of. Try to focus on exam taking strategies and skills as well. If you could find a study partner in your area it would help - to have another perspective on your preparation.

Very encouraging, Lidopaine82 (note the sarcasm).

I applaud you Canine Crusader for being persistent. You're an inspiration. Don't let others undermine your confidence. If this is something that you really want, you WILL get it.

I'm not very religious, although I do believe in a higher power. This could be all be just a test of faith. Yes, God has plans for us all. Some plans take a little longer to achieve is my belief. Naysayers can shoot me down, but that is what I believe in.

PM when you have the chance. And don't let anyone break your determination.

I am going to applaud you Canine Crusader too. What are the people here are thinking about?? Nobody here has the right to put anybody down. Nobody knows what other people have been through. Life is not easy or the same for everybody. Nothing never was easy for me and I am getting in there. Go for your dreams. Do not give up!!!!!🙂

I am sending out a gigantic thanks to boonsh and cacal for taking the high road and keeping the positivity flowing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It amazes me how people can be so cruel to others without even thinking twice. None of those people know nor can imagine what my life has been like for the past 9 years. Life challenges all of us at one time or another.Thankfully, I have such high spirits and tenacity that the devil himself can not convince me otherwise. The rude comments are just a classic case of those who have problems with their self worth blowing out my lit candle just to make theirs shine brighter! Winners NEVER quit and quitters NEVER win! This is my absolute last response on this subject matter because I do not want to be responsible for continuing this cycle of hate and immaturity. I will leave you with these words from Philippians 4:13,
" I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." Brothers and Sisters, be careful of the karma that you put out in the atmosphere because you will reap what you sow!

😍

<sigh> Just offering you some advice, which you don't want to hear, which pretty much sums up how you'll probably do on your next retake. Perhaps it's time you swallowed the hard pill and realized that there is something wrong with your study methods. Not something wrong with you, but with the way you are approaching this exam.

All of this mantra about "winners" is makes me warm and fuzzy, but it won't help you pass the exam. If this was your second retake you would be well within your rights to disagree on this point--but it's going to be your 9th attempt. Time to ditch the philosophy and bury yourself in studying.

I agree.....somebody's just having a good laugh at all you...good well meaning souls out there........just goes to show that even the most brilliant students are either getting mushy or heated up over some hazy person / scenario.

Cheers to all and Good luck to canine crusader if is she is really taking her exams for the ninth time 🙂 !!

IMHO, i dont think this poster is real.

My friend i commend your attempts in retaking the exam, I do encourage you to look for a partner nearby where you live! I know how hard these many attempts are, I have faith that you will succeed have you tried KAPLAN? I did for part 1 and it benefit me! But mostly get updated dental decks and old exams, you might not think but there are new additions from the current decks , dont let yourself down! You will succeed!
