i just got an interview from wayne state! So happy :) i really like this school. I am a OOS applicant, and i was wondering what the acceptance rate is for non-residents invited for an interview....

When's your interview? I just got invited for the 8th. I'm an OOS applicant too!

hey! I just had my interview on November 30th and very much enjoyed it. I am a Canadian applicant from Western, where are the two of you from?

Don't know how many out of state are accepted each year... hopefully enough for us!

i am from california...and i was invited for January 29th....kinda late...but hey can't complain :)

they still interview for a few months, it's definitely not late.
i hear that they put a lot of ppl on a wait list and then add tons after may.. so even if you don't get in immediately there is still hope

when did you submit your secondary?

my scondary was complete on sept 22nd

you're in good shape. just know your AMCAS application very thoroughly for the interview, it's open file.
be relaxed and arrive at least 15 min before the interview because after I went to the admissions office, they sent me to a hospital on the campus for mine.
I even got an instruction card on how to get there lol

I am OOS and was interviewed in Novemeber. They make decisions at the end of every month and you can call the next day to get your results. Wayne is increasing their class size, so a lot of OOS people will get in. My interview went horribly and I still got accepted! Detroit is far grimier than you can imagine, although the medical center and school are nice, not spectacular, but nice. Also, a LOT of people get in off the waitlists because Wayne is usually an applicant's second, third, fourth...last...choice, so my interviewer told me the majority of waitlisted applicants are eventually offered acceptances.

To reiterate what a previous poster said, the interview is basically a review of your AMCAS application. Not very in-depth, just a review for them to gleam more information. Its not stressfull at all. The average length for the interview was less than 30 minutes. It really is a very short experience, if you opt out of the tour.

One more thing. There is no breakfast or information session. There is only an afternoon tour (starts at noon, I believe) and a short lunch at their cafeteria. This is not mandatory, and a few people did not attend. It makes no difference to Wayne if you attend or not, so if you have a late afternoon interview (mine was at 2, and I believe they interview as late as 3), you can fly in the same day and save yourself some money since the downtown hotels are expensive. Whatever you do, DONT take public transportation to Wayne since its terrible and one of the people in our group was late to his interview because he decided to take the bus from the airport (*****). The airport is fairly far from campus though (around 30-40 minutes), and it turns out it actually costs less to rent a car from DTW (~$35 from Orbitz) than for the round trip shuttle ($40), so if you have a late flight back out, it may be better to rent a car so you can drive around the city afterwards. Keep the prepaid parking lot access card they give you. I went to Greektown with another interviewee and we ate at a cool mexican restaurant and gambled a bit at one of the casinos there. If you have the time, I recommend seeing the city after the interview, so you know what you're getting yourself into.

Hey all

If you received a secondary from Wayne, it means you have a 2/3 chance of getting an interview...they only give secondaries to 1/3 of the pool..

I'm so happy i got a secondary!

For OOS applicants of course Wayne is not going to be your first choice. There is a reason for that. For in state people it usually is the first choice or second choice. There is a reason for that too. It is a public university afterall. (Then again so is U of Michigan, but they are on another planet) ;)

one more hint on the seeing the city part... eat pizza in greektown... that is all.

My interview is on December 18th! any advice on how to prepare for the Wayne interview??

1. Lock your car.
2. Buy a concealed weapon.
3. Make copies of your Credit Cards (to cancel when stolen).

Ha, ha! Two more:

1. Bring plenty of pocket change to pay the Detroit city tax.
2. Keep 9-1- dialed on your cell phone.

Screw pizza in Greektown. Eat some coney dogs at Lafayette Coney Island.

are you people kidding me or is it really that bad?

Check it out...

http://www.forgottendetroit.com/index.html

When I was there I counted at least 30 blacks wandering the streets (and this is just from exiting the highway). People will tell you it's not that bad but if you're not used to it, it can be quite a shock.

The whole city is recovering from the problem with race relations and the white flight. The blacks in Detroit don't like whites too much and vice versa. There's been a turnaround from past years but yeah... It's the D.

BTW... Detroit roads are horrible.. so is traffic. Other than that, it's a great place to learn medicine.

if you're never stepped outside of suburbia, it's bad... but otherwise, it's fine.

edit: and to the above... you're really blowing things out of proportion. Hell, even the traffic isnt bad... Have you ever been anywhere on I-95 or on the west coast? Detroit is nothing compared to that.

does anyone know what types of MCAT scores Wayne is interviewing right now?

tough to tell.. i sent in my secondary like oct. 18th, and got an invite about a week later...

and my scores were MCAT 35, gpa 3.48 (last 2 years about a 3.85 for both Science and All other)
OOS applicant with lots of ECs, research, etc.

Do you know about when the invites for the people with 28s will go out?

can't help.. sorry

I interviewed back in November and was accepted at Wayne.

I wouldn't say Detroit is as bad as the other people suggest. I am big on architecture so I really liked the 1920's and 1930's style buildings which make up most of the downtown area. Many of these buildings are no longer occupied, but I have seen some revival. I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express on Washington Blvd and Michigan Avenue, and across the street they were renovating a building for a new hotel. There are boulevard style roads with lots of statues and historic markers. The roads are swept clean although pothole maintenance could do a little more work.

I come from a suburban city in Canada where there is high quality of life and low crime rate. Before visiting Detroit I had a very negative view of the city, as a "slum" with lots of "undesirable elements", but this experience changed my perspective. There are some homeless people on the streets, but not as much as you would think, and they keep to themselves. The working African Americans I encountered were generally friendly. I wasn't particularly fearful of being mugged or swindled.

I wouldn't mind living in Detroit while in medical school, but the tuition at Wayne is pretty expensive for OOS/International students and the curriculum is a bit old school. The academic building is a bit old, the class size is a bit excessive. There aren't innovative features with technology focus or clinical assessment centers. That being said, Wayne has plans to expand from its current physical limitations, and the Detroit Medical Center is quite an awesome place.

Hopefully I have more interviews and acceptances coming. I figure with a 35+ MCAT and 3.65+ GPA I could get into a cheaper place.

i concur everything he said. It's not bad. But I wont go around downtown detroit at night. I did that (Plane arived late, and I was really hungry) and was scared to death. So I took the taxi from one block to another. hahaha

but other than that the school was great! Loved the focus on the underserved.

I have to agree too. Lots of areas can be bad at night, and you wouldn't be smart wandering around them. During the day, and on campus, you are fine. I lived in Flint for the first half of my life (and it is almost as bad). I then moved to a small suburb and all the kids made jokes about flint kids being drug dealers and all that. It was sad, because they were so scared of what they didn't know. I went to University of Miami for college, which was in a nice area, but there were definitely some bad areas around if you even went 10 blocks from campus. I had a homeless man come up to me across from campus asking me for money, and a homeless woman slept in a campus shuttle stop every night by my apartment. You just learn where you can and can't go. Is Detroit #1 on my list of where I want to live? No, but I'm not seriously thinking that by living there I'm doomed to get shot, mugged, and raped because scary homeless people are wandering the street. Ok, sorry kind of a rant there.

Is anyone interviewing on Jan 2?

and lets be honest... it's not like you never hear about break-ins or homeless people in more desireable locations such as ann arbor. We had a number of break-ins at my apartment complex about a block and a half from the Mich Union.

and to tinker about Flint... I went to Powers for HS (neighborhood from Bowling for Columbine for those of you not from around here) and its amazing the suprise that comes from people when I tell them I've never actually been shot.

That's always a great response. "It's not as bad as I thought!"

You never know quite how to respond to that one...

Why couldn't it be just '30 people' instead of '30 black people'. I hope you are not planning on attending Wayne State, because it will be these same wandering people that you will have to meet and treat as patients in the several hospitals in Detroit. Or for that matter anywhere you go. Furthermore there are several 'black students' at Wayne State that you will be in classes with. Cultural sensitivity and compassion are some of the hallmarks of a successful medical career.

Yea maestro, when I moved to Davison everyone looked at me like I had two heads when I told them I went to Hamady in Flint before that. And I love pointing out that the "poor mall" in fahrenheit 9/11 is like 10 minutes from my house and I go in it on a regular basis yet I'm not getting murdered.
I actually had one person respond to me in Miami regarding Flint: "Ohmigod, you lived there? We talked about it in our sociology class and it was the model of a failed city." How the hell do you respond to that? Flint is no paradise, but people exaggerate situations beyond belief.

Anyway, as another poster also mentioned, some of these people are going to be patients. So there is no need to be terrified of them or else this profession is going to be near impossible to deal with. Sickness knows no bias. All patients are not going to be educated, polite, or even clean for that matter. That's just my 2 cents though.

The "9-1-1" bit in my last post was colored with hyperbole.

I grew up in Detroit. To me, the DMC/WSUSOM area does not feel like a particularly unsafe part of the city. You can probably best inform yourself by:

1. Going there for a visit,
2. talking to as many current students who are originally not from there as possible, and
3. looking at crime statistics (http://www.police.wayne.edu/crimestats2006.html).

At first I thought your link was for all of Detroit, and I was surprised to see that there were no homocides...all year. Then I realized it was for WSU only. Seven sexual assaults and 364 larcenies (whatever that is) seems like a lot. Though only having 23 car thefts and 10 robberies seems low for that area--and I'm basing this only as someone whos only been there once, and is comparing the WSU area to my experience of ghetto.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by some of these. I think maybe the tour guides might've missed out on telling you a couple of things...

Wayne has implemented a longitudinal ultrasound training program that begins in Year 1 (with the current year's class) and will extend through all 4 years. It's the only one of its kind yet, and supported through a major grant from GE and run through Henry Ford Hospital. It's basically hands-on ultrasound sessions every couple of months, with experts in various areas of ultrasound and radiology. The guy heading up the training program is the chief of surg (I think) at Henry Ford, and works with NASA on their US program.

There are no microscopes in first year and much of second (I think), with everything being overhead slides or virtual microscopy.

I presume when you state that the curriculum is "old school", you mean it's straight lectures instead of PBL. That's a choice each person should think hard about. Here's what I love about it...Almost all of our lectures are optional. All are simulcasted to a satellite campus in the suburbs and almost all are audio- AND video-taped, and are usually available by late afternoon. So you can save precious time by not commuting and by watching the lectures at faster speeds. To me, the class size didn't really stick out. You probably won't see half the folks anyway once anatomy's over and people start home-schooling.

Does anyone know how long they take?

I was complete only since mid November

this is hysterical. I've worked on the WSU medical campus for the last 5 years and i have never had a problem. It is totally fine with security and parking. Lots of people roaming about at all hours, and not just "homeless black" people like a previous poster suggested. No, you do not leave your shiny new Ipod mini on your car seat so that your window gets smashed and it gets stolen. Common sense.

But the focus here is on the underserved, inner-city population, and you get to see a lot of interesting cases, at times because people don't seek treatment due to being uninsured or under-insured. Sure, some areas of Detroit are scary. But I go off-campus for lunch all the time. I go to Comerica Park, Ford Field, Greektown, Foxtown. I have gone to the casinos, the local bars for happy hour, the Whitney for brunch. The theater district and opera house have performances regularly.

WSU is in the heart of Detroit, closely connected to several large medical centers. It's not for everyone, but I assure you that you should consider all aspects and not just crime rates. And lastly, the "larceny" numbers are so high because that is for all WSU buildings where people leave their property attended all the time, like in the locker room at the fitness center and their bookbag at the library.

Yes, I am biased because I currently attend WSU, but my alma mater is also U of M in Ann Arbor, and I felt equally safe walking around the Diag at night as I do the Medical Center at WSU at night.

The Diag... got to love the random students who would just start dancing out of no where and for no reason. Now that was definitely something to consider in regard to safety...

Not to mention the other cast of characters who made the Diag their home away from home.

A lot of you are so wrong about Wayne State. I don't go there, but many people I know do and I've been there a dozen of times.

1. They have police up the ass at all times.
2. The buildings are absolutely gorgeous, including the medical center and the new buildings.
3. The campus is really nice and safe.
4. Detroit and Wayne State are two seperate things. You cannot put both together.
5. The crime rates on the U-M Ann Arbor campus is higher than WSU (because WSU uses their $$$ on crime prevention).
6. The reputation is EXCELLENT.

Wayne State is my second choice. Michigan is my first.

If anyone has any questions about the area, let me know. But it is an overall exceptional place.

I've been complete since Nov 21. From what I know, they usually take a look at your application within two weeks. They then offer you an interview pretty fast (within a couple of days or maybe in a week or two) or they put you on the "possible interview" list - which is where I am right now.

umm, most of what you say is true, but....

the buildings are gorgeous?! umm, I hope you're not an architechture major... and what new buildings? most of the DMC has been there since my parents went to school there... Recieving has to be one of the ugliest buildings ever constructed.

I'm assuming the whole campus was being included.
