Hey guys;

Based on the recent difficult negotiation process DMC and Wayne State are undergoing, if the two are not able to renew their contract, do you guys think it will affect the quality of future graduates? Would it affect the success of graduates at landing competitive residency spots? Would it affect the stability and national reputation of the medical school?

Please try to address each of the specific questions as much as possible.

Thanks so much for all your input.........much appreciated !!

they'll renew, I wouldn't worry about it... both of them need each other

I agree w/ UMP.

Even IF they don't renew, there are great hospitals in line to take their place (Beaumont, HF).

Yup lawyers just gotta make everything difficult and expensive

I agree with all of the above responses.

I interviewed at Wayne last Tuesday and asked the same question. My interviewer assured me that both Wayne State and the DMC NEED each other and therefore will renew the contract. He also said the contract dispute should in no way deter future students (but then again why wouldn't he say that???)

I've actually been interested in this situation for a bit as DMC is supposedly courting MSU. I do think that the most they are doing is making some minor affiliations with us as a bluff to WSU. Looking at the website (as a non-resident and being in class it's the best I can do) I'm amazed how well integrated the two institutions are with services, staff, faculty, and departments being shared. The research facilities are shared also. Plus, it seems that Beaumont/HenryFord could affiliate themselves strongly with WSU if they dis-entagled. In the end, it would be extremely difficult to separate them, but it would be "worse" for DMC as their only other possibility would be MSUCOM (UMich has their own hospital system and others, and CHM is going west) and while we'd love it, it would be quite a change. COM is not the research power that UMich or WSU are, it wouldn't be the same affiliation.
They will patch things up and make nice or there will be quite a change in Michigan healthcare. I wish them both luck in their issues and hope it turns out well for everyone. 👍

Funny you should mention this...MSUCOM is actually planning on starting up a site in SE Michigan by 2007:

It sounds like it'll be small though, and I doubt it'd have much sway in persuading DMC to join MSUCOM.

So, what you're saying is that MSUCOM wants our sloppy seconds? 😛 😉

What is CHM? I know that's not childrens hospital!?

You know what? I must be really out of the loop right now. Who doesn't know that CHM means college of human medicine!!! 😕 Thanks for your brilliant mind. 😀

Heh. I'd imagine if Wayne and DMC stuck together, that MSUCOM would end up going into Oakland County. I heard rumors last year of a school wanting to start up around Beaumont-Troy at some point. In retrospect, perhaps it was related to the MSUCOM expansion. At any rate, I'm sure MSUCOM is, at the least, watching 😉 the Wayne-DMC negotiations carefully.

I'd imagine that we are closely watching the goings-on in the Detroit area. As far as the "sloppy seconds" goes, hell I can't imagine that we'd turn it down. The DMC hospitals are world-renowned and our Departments would only benefit. I can't imagine that we could immediately fill the shoes of Wayne State though. We could grow to fill them, but it would require a significant investment that I doubt the College or the University would be willing to undertake. I can't imagine that this would occur. I hope that Wayne and DMC make up and get on with what has seemed to be a strong partnership.

Actually there was an osteopathic medical school looking to start up in the SE part of the state (you heard right .edu-MD), this was a primary impetus for our expansion. We have already expanded in E.Lansing and if the private school had started attracting clinical affiliations it would seriously compromise the Statewide Campus System and post-grad opportunities that DOs have in this state. It would be an issue for the entire state and the future of the profession both in Michigan and the US. A large part of the reason for the resounding success of the AOA and MOA is the fact that they can focus on MSUCOM as their school. The MOA and the College (and MSMS) work very closely together with MSU at large and the state government, it's a great thing. The latest communication hour with the administration has announced that the site of the 50 student expansion site will be either at/near the DMC or in Pontiac (which is ironic as the original private med school began there before moving to MSU). Regardless of the location it will help our college and be a great asset as we have most of the Statewide Campus System near there. The final location is very politically charged as the addition of any medical complex has several far reaching economical and social implications, and I'd imagine that a "competing" medical center near WSU/DMC is quite a serious consideration as well, although I never like the sense that we "compete" with our future colleagues...I guess I'm naive that way. This final decision is in the hands of the MSU Board of Trustees and other governing bodies...not those of our administration...part of the workings of a huge public university. I truly hope that they tread softly in the DMC area, it would be extremely foolish for MSU to get in the middle of that, just plain stupid.

Thanks for the insight into MSUCOM's expansion. I would hope things wouldn't get territorial if they expanded near Wayne/DMC. Are they considering downtown or one of the suburban DMC locations? Pontiac seems like the less frictional, and potentially more clinically beneficial (with POH there) site though.

Over the last week or so, I began hearing radio commercials for Huron Valley-Sinai, where they mention their affiliation with "the nationally-reknowned Wayne State University" med school. I hadn't heard it before last week. DMC is still apparently making commercials mentioning WSU. Perhaps they're just trying to capitalize on what's left of their agreement. 😎 Hopefully they'll get things in gear and come up with something long-term.
