Royal Oak is very dog friendly. I drove through during the St. Patricks day parade and it seemed like everyone had thier dog there. So much so, it suprised me. I too am thinking about buying a puppy, but am unsure. I do not doubt being able to take care of it for the first 4 years, but im not sure after. Either way, its good to know there may be a few in the class that can dogsit and such for eachother.
 
I am a Canadian that got an acceptance this year. Do most of you Canucks stay this side of the border in Windsor? If so how long is the average commute? Any recommended rentals in Windsor? Thanks for any info

Hey all fellow WSU SOM class of 2012'ers. I had a quick question for those of you who are ahead of the game. What are the closest apt complexes to scott hall? Any opinions on the nicest?

University Towers and Cathedral Towers are both about 8-10 minutes walk to school. The former is nicer. The latter is cheaper and closer to grocery stores.

Hey everyone, figured I should join this thread....accepted Nov 28 of last year. I am waitlisted at a bunch of schools in NYC, and BU and awaiting AECOM. But with the number of applicants and competitiveness this year, I am not expecting much, so I'm trying to get pumped about WSU and coming back home. What's the deal with this "roomate finder" thing? and can someone give me advice on housing (where, when to look, is student housing available through WSU?) THanks! prob see yall in the fall,

Where to look depends on what you think you need in the area that you live. Quite place to study, night life, parks, length of commute, etc.
When to look: ASAP
Housing through WSU: available it is not med student specific and can fill up fast
The "roomate finder" that student affairs puts out has worked for some people but that is extremely variable.
 
I'm sure this has been asked before, but I thought I would ask those in the know anyways. I'm looking for a 1 bedroom apt or a studio. I was hoping for a cheap place (U towers seems a little bit out of my price range), and a place close enough so that I wouldn't mind walking to class from during our awesome MI winters. Any advice guys?

I'm living at Cathedral Tower near the corner of Woodward and Warren. Its $460 for a studio and less than 10 minutes walk to school. Electricity and heat included.

Just a quick thought about living near Scott Hall.
I have known people that did so and loved it (for some of the reasons I think you are probably considering), but I also know some that were miserable. They said that it was like they never left school, even when they were at home, because the two were too close. I think that there can be positive aspects to having to spend a bit of time between school/work and home.

If you are thinking about living close that is something that you might consider.
If you are thinking to live close to avoid having to drive – you’ll probably have to drive during MS3 and MS4 (actually would highly recommend it) and you may have to leave campus for various stuff during MS1 and MS2 (clinic medicine site visits, PD, etc) – plus depending on what you need in the for of stores, etc you may end up having to spend some time in the ‘burbs.
 
I’m a Canadian student currently at WSU. From what I have read from your previous posts, it’s pretty difficult to get in if you’re a Canadian student. I’m currently a freshman and I am trying to decide between majors. I really want to major in Honors Chemistry but a lot of my friends/people keep telling me not to do it. They, for some reason, think that taking the chemistry route will screw over my GPA. Apparently, that is the reason why “all” the pre-med students major in biological sciences; I don’t know why they think Biology will be really easy. So, can you guys (especially if you’ve been at Wayne State for a long time) give me some advice? 😕

I "majored" (for lack of a better word to explain my degree) in chemistry, specifically organic chemistry and my interviewer at Wayne actually commented on that. He said that most med students hate orgo and asked me why that is. When I told him I can't speak for others and that I simply enjoyed the material plus was good at it, he goes, "Yes, but most med students aren't good at it. They can't visualize what's going on. Once you have a 3D picture, you're set." My point? That I am wonderful! hahaha, no. Rather that I encourage you to major in chemistry and not be afraid of the "difficulty." My highest grades were my chemistry classes ironically. Now that's not to say that you shouldn't think carefully about what your strength is. It's nice to hear people say "study what you like and you'll do well" but sometimes that doesn't work. Sometimes we study things we like but end up doing miserably on...so if chemistry is a subject you like plus you will succeed at, go right ahead and take it.


😀 P.S. It's totally better than biology. And I graduated from a Cdn school.

I had a strong chemistry emphasis (my major was basically a double major in chem and bio, only my university renamed it something else to make it sound cool) and WSUSOM seemed to really like it. As the other poster stated, my interviewer said the same sorts of things (as well as interviewers at other schools). It is not that great to just be a plain old bio major. That is what everyone does! A good way to make yourself standout is to do something different (especially something interesting or challenging). Believe me, you do not want to blend in as a normal bio major during the interview season. If you like chem and are good at it, then go for it! ....but this is not to say that a good GPA is not important. The only time I would ever recommend doing a plain biology degree is if 1) that was the only thing they were interested in... and even then, I would recommend doing something cool with it (research, emphasis in a certain area of biology, etc), and/or 2) they worried they would not be able to pull a >3.5 GPA with their other major (and thought they could with bio).

hey sorry for the late response. it went great! i felt very comfortable with my interviewer. she was such a sweet lady. i left there feeling very good about the interview, now i just have to wait until the 30th to see if it went as well as i thought it did! oooo i hope i get in! 😀

🙄What their #5 ranking (for public allopathic med schools) isn't enough for you?🙄

Just give main campus a few more years and WSU-SOM will be able to claim that they are both the largest single campus med school in the nation and the most expensive public MD school in the nation.

I think its stupid what the administration is doing to the medical school. It seems they are more interested in making money than training doctors. Whatever we do they try to nickel and dime us. Greedy bastards.

okay so this is probly a stupid question, but i'll ask anyway cuz i dont know anything about Michigan😱. anyway, it looks like a lot of med students live in royal oak. so i was just wondering, where exactly is that? is it far from campus? Thanks!😀
 
Its a suburb on the north side of detroit. Between the medical campus and wayne there is a bunch of ghetto, then ferndale, then royal oak. It is a nice place to live since it is outside the city, yet a 6 minute commute down the freeway.

oh, wait this is the D, where everyone goes 70+ through construction zones during rush hour. At least until an accident or broken down junker brings everything to a standstill and makes the commute from RO more like 30+ minutes

Better their junker than your own. Wouldnt want to break down somewhere on woodward south of ferndale trying to save time....
 
hey guys, just wondering what kind of car you guys have. currently i own a 2000 corolla with 150000 km on it. i think it should be good for the next four years at wayne as long as i keep it well maintained. what do you guys think?

Keep that car, there is a good chance it could be stolen. No reason to get a new car stolen. 👍
