This was the first time since medical school started that I saw some animosity against DOs in our class. Damn those michigan state DOs trying to take our place in the DMC. And when he said it will be a cold day when that will hapen, I just laughed. This guy did nothing in the past, and he won't be able to do anything new in the future

And it hurted a little when he mentioned that we were the last resort for henry ford, after Michigan and then case western thought it wasn't worth while to send their students there even though we are a lot closer. I mean, why did he even tell us this. I don't know, I just feel a little bit less secure about being in wayne state at the moment

So yeah, people out there who get accepted to other schools, don't come here. It looks like wayne sucks more then I thought it did. And if one more person says all wayne state students are Michigan rejects I am going to ..................., well you know what, I think they are saying the truth

Does anyone have the nutrition study packet? Thanks!

I didn't read that so much as animosity toward DOs, especially with the comment that WSU would do what they could to help MSUCOM; with basic science classes, etc. I heard that more as animosity toward any school that might try to “poach” the educational spots of WSUSOM students. Sort of a willingness to turn a blind eye to the few outside students that do away rotations TO the DMC but an unwillingness to share with a large number of outside students.

I can see why that might have hurt, but maybe HFH didn't think that WSU wanted them... or maybe HFH was trying to not piss off the DMC by "poaching" the WSU students and our cheap labor.

Not sure that I can agree with you on that one if for no other reason than the fact that I would not have gone to UM (had I been accepted there) if I had any other choices, for the simple fact that I don’t like the attitudes of the Docs I know that trained there.

How on earth have you gotten that quick about working through the physical??

Shangal was referring to some comments made during a second year class meeting (about scheduling for third year) in which the administration actually tried to bring us all up to speed on what is going on with the DMC.

You just have to Hustle & Flow...

I agree with just about everything Dr. Frank said, but it's way too easy to take it out of context so I won't post his words here. Phrased as a hypothetical: if there were to be a turf war, it would be his job to defend our turf.

I dunno man, I think he sugarcoated it as best he could. If that was a possibility he would have jumped on it as an explanation. From what I've read, Michigan and CWRU are huge on research. Wayne is too now, but I believe that's much more recent. Either way, I'd say that Ford's interest in Wayne shows that Wayne has gotten more desireable.

so HF has shown interest in wayne students recently?

I appreciate your concerns, but it affects us all to a great degree, and I'd appreciate being told something rather than nothing which is what the first years are getting. If he said something inflammatory, then by all means hold back, but what facts are you guys being told? I was one that thought there was no way this would go wrong, but to be honest, the silence is deafening, and I'm starting to think I was wrong

A couple of years ago, Henry Ford cut its relationship with Case Western and formed a new deal with WSU. Recently, there have been more HF clerkship spots available for WSU students. Everytime I've done a rotation there, the faculty have commented on how they wish that more WSU students would do rotations there. There are even rumors floating around that HFH wishes to be the primary affiliaton with WSU, but I don't know if that is just talk.

Here is a press release about the original affiliaton two years ago:
http://www.med.wayne.edu/news_media/2002/press25.asp

They said they would stream the meeting. I don't see it up yet, but if someone could let the first years know where to find it if and when they post it, that may help.

anyways, anybody else annoyed by the fact that so many in our class have no idea what the difference between "reply to all" and "reply"? why's it so hard?

perhaps this is the site ddmo is talking about?

The Chuck Norris facts are hilarious - my favorite is "Chuck Norris doesn't teabag the ladies, he potato sacks them" or "there's no theory of evolution, just a list of animals Chuck Norris allows to live" funny stuff.

Thanks for the link to Dr. Frank talk - he must have really gone off with the second years, because what he said to the third years wasn't all that groundbreaking or controversial, the most controversial thing he said was that the DMC is pissed because WSU-SOM has a partnership with HFH and that he doesn't want the HFH situation and the DMCs new relationship with MSUCOM to cause MSUCOM students to take rotation spots from WSUSOM students.

Well since I've listed nearly everything he said, I'll go the extra mile and post his other two points -

- WSUSOM is diversifying to put themselves in position to be on the NIHs RoadMap to Health (my thoughts - this would be a VERY good thing for all of us now and in the future, regardless of whethere we stick around Detroit or not)
- there are five residency/student rotation programs that are in jeopardy ortho, derm, uro, ENT and family and if the DMC doesn't want them they will certainly find new homes for them.

The only reason I wanted to actually post this stuff is because some posts on SDN (ie Rodney "Butt" Munch - disgruntled WSUSOM rejectee? or DMC head a$$hole Duggan?) have made it sound like WSUSOM is going to be unable to clinically educate their students by the end of the year, and it just is not true in any way shape or form - it's important that old/new/prospective students know this, now maybe new/perspective students can read what is really going on if for some reason they can't see the stream.

Can anyone else not see anything other than the average for the Endo exam up on blackboard? 74.77 is pretty low for our class. I'm hoping I got a 75.... :scared:

Yeah, they got my hopes up too, only to pull the rug out later. I should have figured it was coming when I was in SH late this afternoon and nothing was up yet.

yeah, thank god the average is low. I thought I did a lot better when I first got out, but then I remembered that I guessed on at least 30 questions. I mean they were good guesses but you never know what the real answers are. Even a week after I took the damn thing

Thanks for the info. I'll be starting MS1 in August. But, honestly, I know things will work themselves out, and that Wayne will continue to be a great clinical school.

anyone have any advice for the 9 neuropsych questions. are they easy questions or are they nitpicky?

Very easy. These will boost the average and help those of you who have been slacking pass the exam.

For those of you that went to the GI lab on Thursday... were they taking attendance? Did they seem serious about absences?

They didn't take attendance in my lab, but only like 12-15 people even showed up. So they might in the future just because of that. It only actually lasted about an hour and fifteen minutes, but it was really just a reading of the slides we got in our mailboxes. I bring earplugs and something else to study - getting pinched for non-attendance sucks, believe me

those of "you" who have been slacking? what are you trying to imply? That first years on SDN are slackers?

I resemble that remark!

Any 2nd years go to the endo post-exam review on friday? do you know if they gave us any more points? Just curious since the final grades are still not up...thanks!

Project H is having a used sports equipment drive
for the kids out at the Wayne County Family Center
(a homeless shelter for families)

There will be a donation box in the Student Affairs office from April 14th-May 1st

Items we could use:
baseball gloves
baseball bats
baseballs
basketballs
volleyballs
soccer balls
footballs
tennis rackets
tennis balls
any other sports related equipment you have lying around

Please take a minute to check your attics, basements, and garages to see if you have any items you can part with. We need to get these kids outside and exercising!

Email Katrina at [email protected] if you have any questions.

That's still pending since the course directors didn't receive the citations until one of them showed up at the post-exam review.

Hey, has anyone heard of a bunch of guys from WSU-SOM having a hockey team?? My goalie was saying that there's some team out there called Wayne Med and he was pretty sure they were all med students. Any of your classmates ever talk about skating?

I would just like to echo these comments made last year regarding the nutrition exam.

I walked out of that exam past him, everything I could do to restrain myself from sticking my damn pencil in his ear

there were questions on there, that I am dead nuts sure he told were just for our information and not for the test. I figured that was coming though, I knew he'd struggle to get 100 questions from that material, what an a$$hole

He walked up to the person in front of me (who was seated in the front row) at about 9:30 ish and asked if he thought the test was fair. We were all still TAKING the test!!

Did anybody else get cornered by one of the proctors and asked about some copy of a test from Kinko's? I had no clue what he was talking about, and I think he thought I was lying. But even if I did happen to get a boot-leg something. Did he really think that I would own up to it, or scam on somebody else? Come on...we are all in the same $hitty test boat.

Hey fellow WSUers. I'll be starting MS1 in August. I plan on taking a histology class at Wayne this summer. I'm working, but only a little bit at this point, so even though everyone says chill over the summer it's not like I'll be swamped or anything. (besides, as a non-trad, I haven't just chilled over the summer for 10 years. not sure i'd know how. lol)

The guys who's teaching the class was at WSU but dropped out to pursue a PhD instead. He recommended the class and said it would help me. Any thoughts from current MS1's???

I believe she's talking this year. I know Jenn's in your class now.

Hey WSU meds:

Since you guys are going through the process, I was wondering if you could tell me how do medical students at Wayne get involved in research? When do they do it (during summer and/or during the academic year?)? How're they able to find the time during the year and is there a good chance of getting publications ?

Thanks for all your help !

I guess it depends on your background a little, if you've had any cell bio, then you'll be fine in histo, just chill for the summer. Honestly though, even if you haven't had cell bio, you'll still be fine. Histo isn't tricky it's just memorization, and I don't know that taking a summer course would help you with that enough to make it worth it.

I had cell bio a long time ago, then did grad school in an unrelated field, and this is how I did histo this year - I went to one lecture, and a few histo labs (where they show and describe slides), I would read the notes then spend one day memorizing them a couple days before the exam, then I would look at the slides that they went over in lab the night before the exam. I didn't ace the course or anything - but I was right there in the meaty part of the curve.

My point isn't to recommend this method, but just to say that if you work even a little harder than I did you'll do just fine and spend the time over the summer that you would have spent in class on the golf course, or at the bottom of a bottle of beer. Trust me, you'll be glad for the rest when Labor Day comes and you've just finished the first histo/anatomy exams. Good luck.

Wow - can you guys tell that I'm super bored with Neuro studying - I just can't do Wallerian degeneration right now

Anywho - I do research somewhere else - not wayne - I get about 20 hrs a week in without much trouble - the nice thing about most lab based stuff is that there is downtime while experiments are running so you can study. I have heard that labs around Wayne are really accepting of interested students, I know of one person that did stuff at Wayne at about the level that I do a few years ago. As far as publications - if you work on it you'll get your name on a paper - you may not be the first author, but that's ok, especially as a med student. Also if the guys/gals leading the research want to get funding, they have to publish - so chances are if you work, you'll get your name on a paper.

Any second years have their PD exam yet? Any pointers? Also, is it just the patient and you in the room (plus the video camera) or is there a doc in there watching you like a hawk?

It is pretty easy to do research over the summer, but make sure you start looking into it over xmas break. They have a summer research program where you pretty much have your choice of profs in the all diff areas (karmanos, scott hall people, henry ford, etc). It pays somewhere around $3000 for 10 weeks (i can't remember exactd number) and free lunches. Anyways, you can either go through the program and write up a proposal for what you want to do (w/ the prof's assistance) or you canjust find someone to do research with. A lot of them prefer you to write a proposal because if it is approved, the alumni association pays for your work.

There are also summer clinical externships available that aren't that hard to come by. I will either be doing the research/clinical externship at henry ford or i will be doing cancer research at karmanos... i am waiting on approval on my proposal. The prof I am working with says I would for sure get a poster and there is good possibility I could get my name on a paper, depending on how much time I put in and how much I accompish. She said the last person she had got her name on a paper (not first author, of course). Generally speaking, 10 weeks is not really enough time to get a lot done with research though.

memorize the checklist.
i've heard good things about the audio file that was put together by some of our classmates.

it is you, two SPs (one as the patient and one with the checklist evaluating you), and the video camera in the room. same SP is the patient for both the history and the physical.
personally I would have rather had a doc watching me like a hawk than an SP watching me like a more observant (but less knowledgeable) hawk... so make sure to talk though everything that you do. I would say that you should approach the physical with the plan that if you don't both say and do something than you didn't do it.

A second year told me that it was tough because there were like 160 questions that could get you points and to get the 1 point for each of the different areas of the review of systems you had to ask a majority of the questions (i.e. 6 of the 10) for that area. At least, that is what i understood.

Yeah, I'm gonna do it. Marty's a great guy. I had him for BIO 4120 (Human Physiology) and he did a good job. I'm sure you know that he was at WSU-SOM before deciding to leave to pursue his PhD. Thanks for the input.

And why are you worried about our exam at this point? We have two hours to do our full history and physical; you have 13 minutes! For us, it's about being very thorough and taking your time; for you, it is all about speed, speed, speed.

For my fellow second years, I took mine this week already and the only advice I have is to take your time and think it through. There is no harm in going back to doing a previous exam that you forgot once you have moved on to a different area since there is no written record of when you did each part.
