And why are you worried about our exam at this point? We have two hours to do our full history and physical; you have 13 minutes! For us, it's about being very thorough and taking your time; for you, it is all about speed, speed, speed.

For my fellow second years, I took mine this week already and the only advice I have is to take your time and think it through. There is no harm in going back to doing a previous exam that you forgot once you have moved on to a different area since there is no written record of when you did each part.

i didnt specificallt ask him about it... i walked into the conversation. i am worried about our 13 min one. do you know if they give us a checklist for ours?we haven't got a lot of practice in clinmed with this stuff... i think i have been the doc like twice. any advice for this one? i remember someone before said to ask about everything, sexual stuff and all.

oh yeah, do they throw any curveballs at you? i.e. your patient ends up being bisexual with 3 partners and loves anal sex? i can handle this stuff if it is true, but when you know the other person is just faking it all it's more weird than if it were true... if that makes any sense..

I believe they gave us a checklist. I did pretty well on my OSCE, mostly because I had Dr. Spurlock so I made sure to ask ALL the sex questions (arousal, climax, orgasm, resolution, etc). It was pretty embarrassing to ask those sorts of questions, but I guess I covered it up pretty well 'cuz Spurlock gave me great comments.

Just memorize the checklist they give you. It'll be a problem that you can OPQRSTAA and there shouldn't be any curveballs. You will have to take a blood pressure and tell the doc what you got. If you haven't practiced taking BP's you may want to before the exam.

I remember feeling like an idiot after the exam because I forgot to ask the alcohol questions and also forgot to ask about her last menstrual period. Everyone I talked to forgot something though.

cfdavid,

You're welcome. Enjoy yourself over the summer (as you know Marty is hilarious  ) and I will see you in the fall 👍

There was some stuff that I didn’t bother to ask during the year 1 OSCE – specifically all of the sexual history stuff. But unlike Katrina I didn’t have Spurlock for my evaluator, so I figured I could safely skip them in an effort to save some time (which I still ran short on – seems to be a recurring trend for me with these SPs) and get to the questions that my evaluator was going to think were important. I think part of the trick is recognizing/knowing your evaluator and knowing what to stress so that they feel like you did a good and thorough job (which is harder to do when it is a SP with a checklist and essentially no practical experience that is evaluating you).

thanks for the response. man, i made the mistake of looking at 2nd years schedule last night. Classes until 4-6pm reguarly? Exams every 2 weeks? I suddenly became depressed. At least you guys are almost done with it!

So, any advice for genetics? Difficulty, is it about the same as nutrition? I assume the book is not necessary. Any generaly advice on what is important for genetics. Thanks!

So - how ridiculous was it that nutrition was as hard as it was, and Neuro was as simple as it was. On top of that, i think that I got zero out of nutrition - it was a more detailed, more poorly taught, harder to understand version of about 3 chapters of Biochem.

Basically don't just put it on the back burner while you study neuro like I did. I didn't buy the book. Maybe it would've helped. Can't think of any other advice to give you...

Find the review sheet, it's helpful. Go to lecture and lab, as they stress things that seem like minor points in the notes. The test isn't all that difficult, but there is a bunch of questions that is more ethical/judgement stuff which you can't really study for. That whole class annoyed me because it just seemed like an excuse for the genetic counselors to justify their existance to us and stress their importance.

yeah, i think it was easier because i studied more for it. everyone has been saying it was easy... probably means there will be a high avg ! 😱

I couldn't agree more!

"When you're climbing up a ladder and you feel something splatter... diarrhea"

"When you're sliding into third and you feel a juicy turd.... diarrhea"

I don't like the new people who are posting here. I don't know why

I also hate that I am studying today, or was yesterday. I can't believe I am stuck in this library studying in such a nice day. What a waste. I think god hates me

Yeah dude, this sucks. The weather's only getting nicer, but when GI is done, neuro (shudder)... and when that's done, Step I... reminds me of that quote, "the light at the end of the tunnel is really an oncoming train"

Anybody recall if the patient panels for genetics are streamed? I'm guess not... 😕

So what did everyone think of the GI exam today? I didn't think it was too bad. But there was a lot of minutia that was pretty ridiculous. How much bile does the liver make in a day? Grrr...

Yeah, I think the mean will be higher than usual... I got hosed on the images as is usual for me, but the rest was reasonable. The bile question and a few others were out of nowhere though. Pharm was straightforward, didn't even really need much memorizing to get those.

I got out thinking I did well, but then I went over the questions. Bad move

Was that even in our notes?
I know that I could go back to them to check but I don't want to be like Shangal and realize how badly I got hosed over by this one.

I'm not sure if it was in our notes or not. I just picked the lowest # because most of the bile is recycled via bile acid reabsorption. Hopefully that was the correct answer.

it was in our physiology notes... maybe they expected you to remember 🙄 (i don't remember what it was)

That was the day Ulich brought out the grape juice and used it as a comparison to bile. Said it was a couple of those bottles a day. So, I went with 1L.

the answer was 1 L or (1000ml).... it wasn't in the notes anywhere, but I had it written in the margins....

How does Wayne let you know your finaid offer? Do they email or snailmail? And when do they do that, before or after May 15? Thanks, everyone!

They should have sent you a sign on to the pipeline system - it would look something like am1234 - you need to make sure that you follow the directions in the letter they sent you with this number to sign on to pipeline (pipeline.wayne.edu) to forward the email sent to this pipeline account.

When you get an offer, they'll send an email to that pipeline account ([email protected]) which you may not see unless you have set up the forwarding.

The email that I got last year came on 5/7 - but I checked pipeline earlier and it was there. It seems to take a few days for the email to arrive once stuff has been posted to your account

so we got an email saying our grades are posted on blackboard. i must be ******ed because i can't find them.... or maybe they aren't quite all there yet. can anybody access them? where? thanks.

edit: nevermind, the 'Course Grades' section is now showing up for me.

On the main page there is a link to "my grades" in the box on the left. In the next window click on "on-line grades" not the individual courses.....

On a simular note. I failed nutrition.... I have no idea how I missed so many questions. I enjoyed the material, found it to be potentially useful for the boards next year, and studyied accordingly. I didn't blow it off in favor of neuro (which I passed with no problem, btw)..... Other than my very first grade in anatomy (when I had no idea what I was getting myself into!), this is my lowest grade yet. This is rediculous, and it takes all the joy that I actually had for being a medical student out of me. I am very sad. Unless they lower the pass rate, there may be 15 or so people failing again this year. Something needs to be done.

Do I have to take the test again this summer? Will it be the same test?

sigh...... Thanks for listening.....

Honey...it is ok, I know how you feel. Yes you will have to re-take in the summer, but I have no idea if it will be the same one or not. Be sure to go to the review session today though. It will help you to see where you need to be stronger. PM me if you want to vent or whatever.

Anyone know why some times I can get the video to play double speed in windows media player and sometimes I can't. I am trying to watch the year 2 self-studies for neuro and it won't let me play them at a faster speed, but other people I talked to can. I am not doing anything different that I know of, then I have with other videos that I was able to play at faster speeds. Thanks!

I have the same problem some times. I think it might have something to do with your connection speed. Just for troubleshooting, have you tried at school (i.e. with laptop)? If you have wireless at home, you could always try directly connecting to dsl/cable modem.

Has anyone been able to get out of getting the school's health insurance besides through a spouse/medicaid/military/or other reasons listed in the insurance packet? If I can find a better deal with similar coverage, do you think they will allow me to opt out? $4900 for 2 people for their lowest plan seems a bit ridiculous.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. I feel much better no that I am home and away from school. Love of medicine is very slowly returning.......

To Fun8:
I doubt they'll let you get out of it that easy. But, since you have a spose/sig other, you can get out of it, even if your spouse doesn't have insurance through work. Have your wife buy the plan you are thinking of, and then add yourself as the dependant. ...It has been known to work... 🙂

i have been wanting to do this. i think when my plan is up i will sell my pda and go with one of these pda/phones, but i have verizon and was looking at either the treo700 or xv6700. i know mendel has a pda/phone, but i forget which. you might want to try PM'ing him.

here are the min requirements:
Processor
Intel 416mhz or better Memory (minimum)
RAM: 64mb
ROM: 128mb Graphics/Video
240 x 320 resolution
65,536 (64K) colors

Expandability
-1 CompactFlash Type II Card Slot (3.3v)
or
-1 Secure Digital / SDIO Now / MMC Memory Card Slot (3.3v)
Communications
Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11b) Wireless LAN (or capability) with128bit WEP Operating System

I have the Samsung sch i730 - it works great so far, it's also been a good and clear phone, and you can turn the phone off seperate from the pda if you need to. Here's the cnet.com review of it -

http://reviews.cnet.com/Samsung_SCH_i730/4505-6452_7-31313312.html?tag=pdtl-list

It's only a little more than the Dell PDAs - I paid 499 for it, but I saw it on amazon for 429. Happy shopping!

edit: it's a verizon phone

$499, also known as less than we paid for our out-of-production no-longer-supported Toshiba POS's. Thanks Dr. Jackson!

Can any 3rd/4th years comment on how much we actually use the PDAs in the wards?

Which we were told to get because that is the PDA that the WSU tech support people "are familiar with/trained on".
Now if that’s the case why did it take almost two years ( 😱 ) for anyone to tell us how to backup our information on the PDAs so that we don’t loss everything when the battery dies.
And why was it one of our classmates that figured it out and not the tech support people? 😕
Must be nice to be that worthless and still have a job. 🙄 :meanie:

I'm more concerned with the PDAs next year adding additional weight to our lab coats and taking up pocket space, especially since it is essentially worthless at this point. To all the Y1 students: when you put all the diagnostic equipment in the coat, it gets heavy!

Oh, right it is because I just had one of them crash media player multiple times.

The same self study had a tendency to loss its audio if I tried to speed it up. And I doubt it is problem with media player since I had just watched the Rafols USMLE review at 1.4x

Don’t know about the rest of you but I am starting to get really annoyed by these self studies. I’m paying enough for the privilege ( 🙄 ) of sitting in Blue getting board to death that it annoys me that the instructors are using this as a way to avoid having to actually show up and lecture. I say that we revoke part of their salaries for being so lazy.

Are they posting last year's lectures to you guys online instead of having live lectures for these "self-studies"? Or is it just Rafols talking to himself about his neurons?

It's not Rafols; it's two pathologists going through powerpoint presentations with voiceovers. Judging by how dark the area surrounding the powerpoints is, I'd say they recorded the lectures in an auditorium with no one there because we don't hear any voices in the background.

Soleil9 said:

The answer to that depends on which we are talking about.

The self studies are just tapes of PowerPoint presentations with a voice over from one of the neuropath unit coordinators. From the look and sound of it I would say that it was taped somewhere other than in one of the lecture halls.

The Rafols review that I mentioned is a video that was taped last year - of a presentation that was given to the then second years to help them with studying for step 1.
This presentation is grouped with a bunch of other reviews of year 1 stuff on the streaming media site in the “board reviews” area.

Hey everyone, jumping in here a little late. I'm Kat, and I dick around on the internet instead of studying (hence my rather embarrassing nutrition score, but I digress.)

I'm one of the people out in the Dearborn area - yay for studying at the Panera/Starbucks on Ford east of Inkster. 🙂
