So why was the average so low? Was it that everyone was busy with Neuro? I've been trying to keep up with Genetics.... Though I've heard from some today that they haven't started studying (more than just a once through during class). I've been through the notes a few times and have been working on some practice problems. I'd really like to be ahead of the curve this time....
😕

I don't know... I studied it for a few days and nearly honored it, and I was a pretty average student last year. Don't worry about averages or what other people say, just study the info until you know it. Keep in mind that a lot of your classmates are pretty burnt out and could probably give two $hits at this point. Good luck!

I just scored a 48% on my first Q-bank exam. BLAH. I remember now why I hated biochem so much last year.... stupid lysosomal/glycogen/mucopolysacc storage diseases.

When you say Q-bank test, do you mean like 50 questions? Or 350, USMLE-style? I'm not quite sure yet how I'm supposed to be using this thing. I only did about 40 questions yesterday...

I just did the 50 question biochem exam last night. I'll be doing the genetics and biostats tonight. I haven't taken a full lenght practice exam yet. I'm following Ms O'Brian's schedule pretty much...

Hi 1st/2nd years,
I have a question about first year textbooks. There are 5 physiology texts listed as required (Cardiovascular, Respiratory, Renal, GI, Medical). In your opinion, are all 5 needed or are some more required than others? I've noticed three of those will be coming out with new editions in October (Cardiovascular, Renal, and GI) so I'll probably hold off on getting those but what is the general opinion here?
Same question with the gross atlases. Did you find the required Clemente's Anatomy Dissector and Netter's Atlas of Human Anatomy truely required?

Well, since Netter's = Bible, you should definitely get that. Seriously, you'll really need it, and if they're doing gross the same as they did this year, you'll absolutley need Gray's Anatomy for Students, it and Netter's are the reference for the course, the notes that the school will give you are just an outline. Abolutely DO NOT buy Clemente's you'll need a couple dirty copies at your table for dissections, but you can buy those really cheap during orientation.

IMHO there are no other books that you'll need to buy. The 1500 page physio note packet that the school will give to you is all you will need for physio. The books will be on reserve in the library if you need to consult them, but there's no need to buy them. The tests are written based on what is in the notes, that's all you'll need.

To sum up, buy Netter's and Gray's for Students, and nothing else. Good Luck.

you can get a "Free" netters if you join the american medical student association (amsa- it costs some money to join, but i think it is cheaper than the netter) during the first week. Keep this one has your clean one. More than likely someone at your table will have a dirty netter and you can share with them. Same with the clementes. After the first 1-2 weeks, most people didnt read the clemente's out of lab. I would buy the gray's anatomy big book though as mendel said.

The only book I recommend for physiology is BRS physiology (it is a review book for step1). You probably won't have much time to read it, but it is really nicely done and one of the books that most people use to study for the boards. The only other books I bought all year were review books (BRS and highyield). They were pretty good to use to see the big picture or to get a quick summary, but definately not a substitute for the notes.

They should provide you with the biochem book, which is the only other textbook you will absolutely need, unless they changed biochem again...

But, overall, you don't need anything other than the notes to do well (except for anatomy and biochem). So, don't waste your money!

I [heart] BRS!

My BRS Anatomy was my best friend. BRS Physio wasn't as good, but still useful. BRS Embryo was a waste. BRS Neuro is good too. If you have a physio text from ubdergrad, hold on to it,you might just want a quick reference. I wouldn't spend extra money on it unless you are a bookish type and like reference books on your shelf, just in case.

OK. Its 4am and I'm going to sleep now. I think I finally figured out genetics and it won't be too rough on thursday.... I hope........

If you want more than the netter's atlas (drawings) than I would suggest that you look at a copy of Rohen's atlas (pictures). As one of the people at the medical bookstore said to me 'Buy a copy of Rohen and look at it after you get done in lab to see what the day's work was supposed to look like'.

Only other books that I really used during first year were various review texts (BRS, high yield, etc) and don't really remember which ones were best.

yeah, that's right. BRS anatomy was really good. One thing I was not told about, is that the friday before orientation week there is a pre-orientation day that only a select few are told about. I found out on accident because someone on SDN mentioned it. I would find out when this is and go (email mariylin o'brien sp?)... you get a free BRS anatomy and a couple other free books... or at least you did last year.

Rohen's color anatomy atlas was really good. It has actual pics of dissections. I looked at it after lab as oldjeeps said... i even brought it into lab a few times. You can probably get it only used for $50-80. I was able to get it first or second week of school at a used book sale for $40.

Oh, yes - Add Rohen's to my list, good for quizinig yourself for the practical anatomy exams and for review without actually going down to that stinky a$$ lab. I had hield anatomy, but never used it, never found the time same can be said of the other courses, just never found the time

Woah, woah, woah... what happened at this super-secret orientation? Were the answers to all of the exams given? Was it only for the children of alums? Is this why I haven't honored everything? I KNEW THERE WAS A REASON OTHER THAN MY LACK OF PROPER STUDYING!

haha... i don't know why some were told about it and others weren't. It's not like there wasn't room to accomodate everyone. When I emailed Ms. O'brien and asked her if I could go and why I wasn't told, she just told me that not everyone got the message... I don't know if they even had it the year before. It is kind of fuzzy, but besides the free books it was mostly a waste of time. I think Dr. Wood might of came in and talked about how to do well in anatomy and Ms. O'brien might have talked about study skills. Some icebreakers... nothing all that interesting... just the free books!

Most curious... I certainly got no wind of any such meeting during my orientation the year before. I am intrigued. And angered. Mostly angered. I want free books!

Back to microbiology and First Aid.

That's what I'm studying today too!

Pop quiz: What infectious organism gives you an Argyl-Robertson pupil?

I can answer that without even looking it up! I learned something! (syphilis... right?)

As an aside, I want to meet the person who memorizes all of the mneumonics from First Aid... they would be hilarious to talk to right before/after the exam. Like a real-life rainman.

I’m guessing that you are doing a modified version of O’Brien’s study schedule... so how much of First Aid did you crank through today?

My eyes are getting tired of cranking through 100+ pages a day. At this rate I am going to have to get stronger glasses before starting third year.

That's what I'm doing. I got thru all of the First Aid micro/immuno and anti-microbial/fungal/viral drugs. Plus 2 chapters of basic pharm. Tomorrow is more immuno/micro for me. And some more pharm...

What schedule are you on?

I had better than 20/20 vision last August. I now have a hard time making out faces on the tv, reading road signs, and I can not read the powerpoints in jaffar when sitting half way back. 😱 i am hoping it is just pseudomyopia...

My schedule and the O'Brien schedule are mostly the same, at least for this week, so micro and first aid are on for tomorrow.
I say mostly the same because there are some sections in my Kaplan books that don’t show up on her schedule, and I am making it a point to look at those sections because it is material that I am sure I have forgotten.

I'm doing it a little differently... I'm studying each subject out of a BRS book and then finishing up the day by reading the corresponding First Aid section. So today I did all of the gram positives and most of the gram negatives, as well as basic bacteriology and the antibiotics. Fun day...

Good luck Class of 2009!

Last one!

Well, I was pretty pleased with what I had retained when I took some practice questions on the NBME website. Q-Bank effectively crushed that optimism. Now, I'm just trying my best to cram it all in there and hoping for a miracle...

Good luck 1st years. Remember that chromosomes are made of DNA, that one always gets me.

Another pop quiz: Which organism is associated with Waterhouse-Freidrickson syndrome and what is the syndome?

was that niesseria gonorhea, I know I misspelled this one
I am kind of guessing here

how about this pop quiz question;

what disease are smudge cells associated with?

Yup. Happens when it disseminates. You get DIC and vascular collapse. Fun, huh?

maybe we should have one pop quizz question every day??

one point for Shangal 👍

i think its actually neisseria meningococci..... Septic shock, so exciting

For any of my fellow second years that haven’t found it yet...

Take a look on blackboard at the micro course page. Then click on “course materials” and “supplemental material”. There are some resources there that might prove to be helpful with our board studying.

You are so right. Sorry about that!

Hey Wayne students....do any of you know when they will start looking at the alternate list? I know Wayne is madd slow and inefficient with many things...but how long should us alternates wait....the lady in the admissions office keeps telling me early to mid-June, but isn't that kind of late for movement to begin?

anti-SSB is found most often, but anti-SSB can show up too. They're both ANA's. 👍

Good question...
let me think of one for you..
Goodpastuer (sp?) AB to what?

Hmm...didn't realize there would be this many posts during board studying.

So, I just thought I'd share this fun little fact about our school to take your minds off studying. With last year's tuition increase and taking into account fees and insurance, Wayne State is now the 9th MOST EXPENSIVE public AAMC medical school in the entire country for in-state residents and 12th most for out of state. It is more expensive for in-state residents than both UM and MSU and is the largest single campus med school in the country. Anyone else have a problem with this?

If you don't believe me, check out the AAMC's website. http://services.aamc.org/tsfreports...ee_sort&year_of_study=2006&select_control=PUB
