Hmm...didn't realize there would be this many posts during board studying.

So, I just thought I'd share this fun little fact about our school to take your minds off studying. With last year's tuition increase and taking into account fees and insurance, Wayne State is now the 9th MOST EXPENSIVE public AAMC medical school in the entire country for in-state residents and 12th most for out of state. It is more expensive for in-state residents than both UM and MSU and is the largest single campus med school in the country. Anyone else have a problem with this?

If you don't believe me, check out the AAMC's website. http://services.aamc.org/tsfreports...ee_sort&year_of_study=2006&select_control=PUB

Makes you wonder how other schools can train fewer students with less tuition $ coming in.
For those of you that hate the Michigan winters just think you could be an out-of-state student at most (all?) of the Texas schools and be paying less than we are as in-state students at Wayne.
Doesn't make much sense to me.

As for our tuition being higher than at MSU and UM... call it another example of the medical school having to subsidize main campus - something that I doubt happens at MSU or UM. And for the record I am sick of my tuition $ going to fund stuff on main campus that I have never and will never benefit from.

yeah, I was looking at my debt yesterday, I can't believe that I will be that poor by the time I graduate

anyways, does anyone know when the OSCE grades will come out?

Why are we affiliated with WSU, anyways? Detroit Medical College sounds much better as a name. Hmmm.....

anybody else hear the rumor that Dr. Roe was upset that the standardized patients and how they were taking to long to answer questions?

Here's a great one from Kaplan that was not in my Path BRS or the First Aid:

What is Loeffler endocarditis?

Katrina adams, I don't even know what that is

and fun8stuff, I think it was more of a concern for you guys, I mean by that first years. I don't know anyone who had time issues when they did the OSCE, I guess they went easier on 2nd years. We had two hours for the interview and the physical, and I think I was done at least 40 minutes before my time was over. But I think I missed a few stuff, and knowing how well everyone else did on this test, I want to see how I did compared to everyone else. All I got was that you did a good job. She didn't tell me at all how many things I missed. I don't know why I get anxious about this kind of stuff

I know of some people (myself included) that took advantage of the full 2 hours. But it didn't really feel like the SP was dragging her feet on answering my questions – I really need to work on avoiding those tangents and keeping the patient on task.
Regardless, I didn't appreciate essentially being a guinea pig with this being the first year that the evaluations on the OSCE were completed by SPs rather than MDs. I would much rather be evaluated by someone that knows what is going on from experience rather than by what conjoint/testing services told them 😱 :scared: .

yes, absolutely, but I think that is why they video recorded the stupid thing. I hear they are going to re-watch it and see if the "graders" missed anything. I think we can pick up or own video CD sometime, but not sure when.
Anyways, anyone completely flustered with board studying... or am I the only one. 😕

You are definitely not the only one. My pals and I got together tonight to relax for a bit and it seems we're all pretty freaked out. Especially in our worst subjects. I heard that Ms. O'brien said you'll be fine if you get an average of 65% on Q-bank by the time you're done studying. That just seems so low to me! I'm doing terrible in both anatomy and biochem and they're bringing my score way down as of now. :scared:

I can't believe Wayne State SOM and/or Wayne State University can let themselves be thrown into such a financial crunch. Isn't there someone around the place who has a decent business degree....? I mean isn't Wayne State research people making some headway and getting all this NIH funding -- we are the school that discovered AZT.... what happened there?

In addition, not only is the tuition raising an issue but the fact that they keep INCREASING the medical student class size every year. I was actually registering at the end of classes and talked with one of the secretaries there who had commented on how with this years first year class they brought in had more students than usual that they had to add an additional 2-3 cadavers to the gross anatomy lab. And supposedly next years class is suppose to reach some sort of outrageous number of 315... which rumor has it is more than Jaffar auditorium can actually seat.

Anyhow, I just think that as an educational institution Wayne State SOM should take some consideration in at least trying to present themselves as placing their student's quality of education as their first priority. But by way of sheer numbers its clear they seem to want to run the place more like some GM assembly line churning out medical professionals and dollar signs per student -- than an actual school that has concern about what is best for a student that they offer a place for at their school.

Okay... so that's my rational/irrational rant for the day. I go back to my board studying books....

I've posted a poll on the other forum about whether or not the med school should cut itself loose from main campus. Please vote and/or comment.

That would be more than a rumor. I was talking to one of the AV guys about how things were changing for next year and asked him how many seats were actually in the lecture halls...
and the answer was 280 in Jaffar and 278 in Blue (it has been a bit so those #s might be off slightly, but both were definitely significantly below 300). While means that the class of 2010 is going to be super crowded, at least until people start skipping lecture.

How on earth are they squeezing more cadavers into the anatomy lab?

I heard they are going to do satellite sites around Oakland county. There are going to be various learning centers where you can video stream lectures live. I heard there is one somewhere in Troy or West Bloomfield.
We shall see, Wayne is known to make all sorts of promises.

That is to hard of a question.. I don't know what that is..
You might have to answer this one for us..

Loeffler endocarditis is a restrictive cardiomyopathy characterized by endocardial fibrosis with myocyte necrosis and eosinophilic infiltrate. There is also peripheral blood eosinophilia as well.

Like I said, it wasn't in the BRS or First Aid books. I knew the guy had a restrictive disease, so I picked amyloidosis. I was very pissed.... 😡

Does anyone else find the Q-bank questions extremely tough?

YES!!! Especially the micro ones! Did you know that there are 2 different types of rat-bite fever? One here in the US and one in Japan. Did we even learn about rat-bite fever in Micro last fall?!?!

Here's another great question from Q-bank:

What chemotherapy drug causes dilated cardiomyopathy?

😡 +pissed+ Stupid student loans...

My OCD streak just saved me.
A while back I filled out the Sallie Mae concierge form to consolidate my loans. It was supposed to be fill out the form, get an email from them, e-sign and consolidation is done.
Well, no email ever showed up, but some paperwork showed up in the mail to show that the process had been started (I thought) so I didn’t really give it much thought.

For some reason today while reading my Kaplan books I started to worry about it (no idea why).
So I gave Sallie Mae a call during a study break and it turned out that everything was FUBARed 😱 . If I had not called them I would have ended up getting screwed out of consolidating at the lower interest rate.

If any of the rest of you are consolidating this year you might think about giving them a call to check on the status of your consolidation.

doxorubicin

Katrina, can we stop the questions. I come here to get away from questions.

As for the increase in class size, the tuition revenue from this will go directly to medical student education.

Any first years that hear anything about whether or not they plan on giving us our OSCE or genetics scores sometime before July 31, please share with the group. Here's to five full days of no studying, so far (sorry second years).

Don't be sorry. You'll be in our shoes next year. Enjoy your break while you have one because it is your last.

I'm thinking of step 1 as one last hurdle to jump over before I'm free of Scott Hall.

Anyone who cares - Genetics scores are on blackboard

Hey guys,

Hope the studying is going well! So, I've been cleaning out the school stuff, and I was wondering, is there any notes that I should hold onto I've already decided that I will keep myhPhys notes. I'm gonna toss the anatomy notes and I tossed the biochem notes as soon as I confirmed that I passed that horrible class. It was great therapy.

So, is there any reason to keep year 1 Clin Med notes? Genetics? Histo? Neuro? etc?

Thanks!!!!

It is probably just my OCD streak (since I can’t imagine taking the time to find one little fact inside the stack), but I am keeping all of mine until I have that MD. Then it is time for a bonfire. 😀

Thought that your class didn't get any notes for BioChem 😕

Oh yes, thats right. No notes for biochem. Ha! What a joke. You still need notes, regardless if you are given a ****ty textbook. We all printed the Power POint slides. It was a massive waste of paper, but it probably would have been near impossible to do well without them. At least it would have been for me. I liked being able to take notes along side the printed slides. So anyways, that's what got recycled immediately after I got my scores back.

OK to further narrow down my question, do I need to keep the clinmed notes? Will there be any test second year that will reference old material from first year? I'm really feeling the urge to purge!

Knock yourself out. I've never even thought to look at those old notes. When I find out that I've passed the boards, they are so being burnt to a crisp.

Hey Wayne Meds:

If I wanted to be involved in a research project (leading towards a publication) in Cardiovascular Disease / Cardiothoracic Surgery during my MS1 at Wayne, who would be best person to approach?

Any suggestions or comment on this area would be sooo much appreciated !!

thanks;

Why do I have some serious doubts about that?

Unless you mean in the form of big raises for all of the worthless people that populate Scott Hall (?and the rest of WSU?) and maybe small raises for the people (faculty/staff) that are actually helpful/useful.
Or maybe in the form of the proposed construction projects.

I know there is a lot that they can do to improve things with all of that $, but I don't see it happening anytime soon.

ddmo, if you have any information that I don't, which would shed additional light on this (like a source), please share.

back in the days of anatomy, some of the profs said that the med school was told that the tuition from students above a certain number (after 260?) would go entirely to the med school and that this money was suppose to go to improving the school. it was something along these lines... it's been awhile..

Is doxorubicin the answer or is it Adriamycin ?? 😕

It was doxorubicin. Just remember doxorubicin and dilated cardiomyopathy start with a D.

Anybody remember the mnemonic that was going around for the brachial plexus?
It told the nerve roots that feed each of the branches – I probably have it written down somewhere, but like everyone else I don’t feel like I have time to go back to the notes to look things up. Otherwise I can say screw it and just hope that I can remember what Ireland said in his review lecture.

Random question - are we still able to park in the structure during summer? I read somewhere that our parking cards/permits expire in May.

I remember something about assasins and muscateers and rats....

I just watched the game with a bunch of undergrads and felt so old. But man, that was a good game.
we just need to win the next 3 games and life will be good again
yes I am that simple

Was there a mnemonic for the brachial plexus...
There was a mnemoic for the carpal bones of the wrist... anyone remember that?

That would be the one.
And that is about how much of it that I was remembering. Maybe we can piece it together.

As memory serves you had to use your fingers to help with it (thumb = C5 -> little finger = T1)
Musketeers = musculocutaneous n.
Assassins = axillary n.
Rats = radial n.
?? = Median n.
Uncle Sam = ulnar n.

Ok, I think its coming back....
the 3 muskateers = thumb, pointer & middle (C5,6,7)
assassins = gun with thumb & pointer (C5,6)
5 rats = C5,6,7,8 &T1
Uncle Same = "OK" symbol with the fingers (C8 &T1)

Someone please tell me if these are correct.....
I don't remeber the median nerve either.....

Here's something really stupid about our education... I just had to GOOGLE Paget's disease because we were never taught it. That's pathetic.
